Hi All,
I'm new to flashing Android and have a couple questions to make sure I'm doing things right. My goal is to get Flapjaxx's ICS ROM for the 717 Note installed.
Here's the instructions from his OP and my questions in line:
Instructions:
1. Download to sdcard - I assume by SD card this means the MicroSD and not the base storage of the device? And the copy should be in the root of the MicroSD (or the base device if that is the right place?)
2. Reboot to recovery - Got this.
3. Wipe data/factory reset ONLY *ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED COMING FROM ANY OTHER ROM* - Unclear here. Does this mean that if my device is stock I DO or DON"T need to do a data/factory reset? Or that I do always and especially if coming from another rom? Ie do it always (and if so how, using the stock device command for reset/wipe?.
4. Flash Rom - How? I have mobile odin, found out it doesn't support on the 717 yet. I DO have the device rooted. Is there a tool I should put on the device OR will the device auto-flash the ROM after placed in the device and rebooted after wipe? What's the process? I've looked around but haven't found a guide that seems clear (trying to be safe here with my process).
5. Reboot and Enjoy
6. *Bug reports not necessary in this thread* This ROM ships As-Is
7. No this will not do anything to your bootloader.
Thanks in advance
Yea because it clears data that could cause problems with the new software. Always do a factory wipe in cwm and clear cache partition and dalvik cache too
You flash the rom with cwm which can be found in the dev section here. Before ya flash anything I'd do some research here because there are threads with very detailed instructions on the flashing process. If ya run into any snags just post back here and I'll try to help ya best I can

CJ, thanks for the reply. That definitely helps. I was able to finally find the thread I should have found first (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223) that explains the process. I guess I just need to be more patient and search harder
If I have questions I'll definitely post. CWM was the missing link in my process. I think I should be good to knock it out now. Wish me luck!
I flashed my GS2 to the early ICS leak and it really improved the experience on the phone, I can't wait to do the same on the Note!
You must have cwm or twrp recovery. Once you've flashed either one, make a backup of your existing ROM (custom or stock does not matter). Always wipe data/factory reset in recovery. Then select install zip and flash away. Follow the directions carefully no matter which ROM you're flashing. Mobile Odin is useless at this point. You will use Odin on your PC to flash a custom recovery. Once that's done you will most likely never use Odin again. Read up on how to install your custom recovery, boot into recovery, flash ROMs and mods...etc., etc.
Edit: SD card can be internal or external. Your choice.

Thanks guys. I'm all set. Rooted, CWR installed, Flapjacks ICS ROM installed, apps and data restored and loving being back on ICS. I love this phone but no ICS was a killer.
Thanks to everyone on the hard work and help the site gives us users. Much appreciated!
Great to hear. Hope ya have a good experience with it!!

I'm sure I will
Now the big decision is to move from ADW to Apex or not. I think Apex is less of a hog but ADW has some nice features. But I haven't really looked into Apex much yet.
But so far so good.

U need to try appdroids team perfection ics ucle2 rc#2... use with skycis theme ots sick its hot its all note!!
BTW.....APEX!!

So many choices! If it wasn't such a hassle rebuilding (desktop/app data/etc) I'd try a few builds
I am thinking of giving Apex a serious go. I've been doing a lot of playing around with the phone (how can one resist!) to push the envelope a bit and am finding that freeing up additional ram is something I need to work on. For example I've tried using ES File Explorer to playback mkv videos via Moboplayer. It works... for a bit... until the app crashes. My assumption is it's an available memory issue (but I could be wrong) as I hover at around 80-100mb free.
Anyway now you are motivating me. I might just have to do an Adwlauncher backup, kill it and setup Apex and see how it goes
Oh, and Tasker is fun as hell. Love automating the phone. How does anyone survive iOS....

So this is weird... In four days, the ROM or phone has froze on me about half a dozen times now. The first time when I was setting it up by as I had just done a flash of the ROM. While setting it up, the phone decided to suddenly slow down all of a sudden to a crawl, up to the point where everything started to get washed out and freeze on me. Force restart by holding Volume Up + Power was the only solution to fix it. Just now, my sister had it connected to her computer and was transferring music over into the internal SD when suddenly, the same thing happened. Again, only solution was to force restart. Anyone have this happen to them before? Everything is completely stock except that we're on Dorimanx 5.3 kernel. Then the other times, it would either slow down and freeze in the CWM Recovery Menu, or when she is texting, playing games, etc. There aren't that many apps installed at all. Reflash of kernel doesn't solve the problem.

Could it be that I need to flash the phone with official ICS + bootloader + PIT? I jumped straight from stock Gingerbread to custom ICS.

try doing a wipe data/factory reset as that is normally a fix to these kind of problems. Also clear cache and dalvik and that should fix the problem!

Do not use the .pit file unless you understand 100%sure about what you are doing. That's probably the easiest way to bork your device.
Edit: try flashing a different kernel. Try dark knight or fluxi. I think it would solve your issues

I would get an official rom, and flash it with odin, (no repartition is required) then install your fav. custom rom

I can't wipe data/factory reset in CWM for some reason when I first tried to install the custom ROM. Never tried again... I wonder if it's because my I9100 is brickable.
I have cleared cache and dalvik cache but no luck. It even slowed down and froze in CWM Recovery.

I know what I'm doing. Flashed with PIT many times before on my Captivate. Haven't tried PIT on her I9100 though. I haven't broken my phone with PIT yet, even though there's quite a few PITs out there lol.
I've read of others running the same combo as me, but they're fine so I wonder what else could cause this...

The ICS ROM from the Q&A Sticky should work right? Her I9100 is brickable so.... Gotta be careful.
Flash a stock rom, go to sammobile.com and find one then try again?

format cache/data/system , then make all wipes , then put your phone in download mode , flash a stock ROM from samfirmware.com , then root your phone !
Running the latest Dorimanx 5.5 kernel and still getting the same problem. In fact, I noticed that if you set it to Performance under Kernel Tweaks in Recovery, the problem is more apparent. Setting it to default causes the issue too.
Hi XDA Guys,
I have yesterday faced this serious issue, Unable to Boot off my SII - GT-I9100, when I installed a new Boot Animation with ROM Toolbox Pro.
Details: I am using 4.0.3 ICS Stock ROM I9100BVLPB baseband with Build Number IML74k.BVLPB with CF-rooted and CF-5.2 Kernel.
Once I installed a new Boot Animation with ROM Toolbox Pro, last night, it strangely not booting off from that boot animation and stuck at that animation, and is not responding, I tried rebooting several times, and taking off battery, But no luck in getting through with that new boot animation, so I had to Restore to my backed up Nandroid, from the CWM recovery Menu and proceed with the 2 days ago backed up, Working ROM.
So, I was just wondering, if this is a Bug in Rom Toolbox, or inconsistency between the kernel I used, or any other possibilities because of ROM Toolbox Pro Custom Boot Animations?
I have upgraded my kernel to Siyah 3.5.2 Kernel to isolate WIFI issues I am facing with the CF Kernel, whilst performing this Boot animation changes from my Device.
Any Ideas or Experiences?
Thanks
Chaladi
Reflash rom through CWM or Odin. ROM Manager is brick many devices here, don't use it.

Didn't use Rom Manager before so can't help on that, plus you did see the animation so it was not permission issue. Perhaps you should try clear cache and dalvik when changing kernel to let it rebuild again. Booting will take a little longer after clear cache.
edit: oh, if i was not mistaken siyah is incompatible with rom manager. Try manually replace the bootanimation.zip in /system/media.
Look, there's plenty posts on here about ROM manager not working properly on s2.You tried to change your BA and you got no boot.
I've had that program give me plenty of work to restore my x10i and sg2.
I'm pretty sure my probs were booting to recovery from there-it wouldn't find recovery and throttle attempts to fix it.
Think I had to reinstall stock ROM,then reroot to get correct cwm to use my nand backup.
I don't know how its dodgy to use, just that it is is enough for me.

Hi, Thanks for your information, i will delete the Application right now, But Apologies that It is ROM Toolbox Pro that I used and caused me problems, not ROM Manger. Sincere Apologies and Sorry for this misconception. I unknowingly typed ROM Manager, since I managed it very often.
Any ideas about ROM Toolbox Issues? with BA?
ROM Toolbox Pro Bug, Not ROM Manager issue
Hi Guys, Apologies for the misconception I placed here. It is ROM Toolbox Pro, Not ROM Manager issue I have faced.
I installed new BA with ROM Toolbox Pro, and restarted and ka boom... Device stuck at BA . Gone into recovery mode and restored to working nandroid copy from CWM recovery mode boot options .
Sorry for the wrongly spelt ROM Manager Word. Now I am more that ever informed with this Buggy Applications...:highfive:
Thanks :good:
I got a friend he tried to change BA at his nexus ended up with bootloop as well, anyhow he was using jellybean so I just thought that's the case. Now it seem to have problem on S2 also.
Rom Toolbox was working well on my previous ICS rom, fonts, autorun, and battery icon all works as it should. I'll give BA a try, give me 10 mins :silly:

No problem mate, I always keep a nandroid handy. Currently using paranoid android rom v1.9.5, siyah kernel v3.5.2. Rom Toolbox v5.1.8
Good luck
I'm not sure why everyone is going on about ROM Manager lol
I have used ROM Toolbox many many times and had about a 98 percent success rate.
I've used it to change boot animations, icons and build prop.
The problem is that when you change anything like that you are messing with your phones framework files and errors can easily occur which result in boot loops.
Before making any changes like that always make a nandroid backup and at the very least backup your framework-res. Apk file.
Have fun
First of all: I have had my S II water damaged some months ago. It works fine that far (exept that the sensor keys are dead). Not sure if there is some other hardware malfunctioning...
Currently im running on MIUI and everything is fine, but recently I found out that no other ROM will work on my Phone:
- Samsung stock ROM runs extreme (!) laggy. Took me about 5 Minutes to go through the menus and enable USB debugging.
- CM9/ AOKP will reset immediately after system startup
- CM10 shows laggy boot animation for few secs, then bootloops
Only other ROM that works is "cMIUI". Which is a CM10 based ROM only with a MIUI userinterface...
What can I do to find out whats the problem with my phone??
Thats weird. Have you tried wiping data before flashing each of these ROMs? Next time, try formatting /system, /data, cache and dalvik cache. Also, have you tried using those kernel cleaning scripts, etc?

Only one option I can think of is to go back to stock samsung rom then claim your warranty if you have it. Or, make a logcat and paste it here (upload to Dropbox or somewhere then past a link over here) and someone experienced might take a look.
Since you've already wiped everything, I'm more inclined to think that it's a hardware problem now. However, let's hope someone more experienced pops in and helps. Good luck

See two logs below, trying to boot cm9. One with default kernel, one with Siyah. Would be great if anybody could find out whats the issue.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/z7q3wbz1h9uhhvg/logcat_cm9_s2.txt
https://www.dropbox.com/s/r1l9umovmxx7jpo/logcat_cm9_s2_siyah.txt
In both logs the phone booted and showed the Pin dialog, then after few seconds rebooted.
As the Phone had been waterdamaged Im pretty shure warranty is absolutely void Also I think that the problems are due to some Hardware malfunctioning. Just want to know what and if theres some way to workaround.
Hi guys, I've owned this tab (p4wifi) for a few years now and for sure loads of junk has been building up in it. I've used dozens of ROMs in the past and it seems to be slowing down. Now the slowness isn't the issue, I just want to revert it back to full, pure stock as in Unrooted stock ROM from sammobile with no user data whatsoever. Exactly like the first day I got the tab, no pics videos or anything that I took.
I live in Malaysia so I'll be using this: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=5982
So now the problem is how to exactly go about doing this? I'm currently running CM10.2 with CWM installed and I want all my user apps, photos and videos gone too, like everything. I understand that i have to boot in Download Mode and use ODIN to flash that ROM image, but hat are the steps before or after that I have to take to remove all my user data? Would really appreciate it if I could have a step by step procedure.
Thanks alot guys

well before flashing the KERNEL image....
it is not quite necessary to totally wipe the phone..
bt to ensure a clean install it can be done...
while.... since u want to return to pure stock.... it is better to first restore your first cwm backup which u made just after rooting.....
coz flashing a kernel wont remove the custom scripts bt only disable it.....
so wat i say is... first restore ur just-after-root cwm bakup.... after that flash your kernel which u will download from sammobile. com.
and then u will have a pure stock unrooted phone like in the beginning

Thanks both of you Woohoo fellow Malaysian on this legacy tab. Sweet thanks for the detailed procedure, I'm guessing step 5 is the one that wipes all photos and videos? Because normally 1-4 just wipes user apps. Will try it after having my stuff backed up How is the UI smoothness for you on this tab? Just wondering if I'm the only one who feels that mine is very sluggish.
actually, Toldo's stock rooted ICS rom and Omni Kitkat rom are both smooth.

Yup that's the one that wipes everything. Sometimes the tab feels sluggish, depending on what i use it for, like heavy multitasking and such, but overall its pretty smooth. BTW, I'm running SlimSaber 4.3 on my tab. I feel that 4.3 gives the best performance for our tab and 4.1(pershoot's cm10) is the most stable.

How about kernel wise? Which is the best kernel out there for this tab? Would prefer a ekrnel that allows "powersave" and "performance" mode in trickster mod :3

On stock ROM? I'd recommend A1 kernel or Yoda kernel. Yoda kernel is quite outdated and doesn't contain the l2_hsic wakelock fix if you have the 3g version, but its pretty good. A1 on the other hand, is a fan favourite. Both have performance governors and if I'm not mistaken also powersave governor, but honestly I've never tried trickster mod so I can't tell you that.

Thank you sir, great help so far heh. I ended up flashing the rooted deodexed stock ROM i found in the forum but after flashing I chose to disable stock recovery flash, does that change anything? My first boot wasn't successful so I went to reflash the ROM again in CWM and it got stuck in "Opening update package". I restarted the tab and it booted up normally. Is the stock ROM interfering with the custom recovery? :3

Did you do the usual wipe before flashing? And also what version of cwm are you using? Try using this version of TWRP by kasper_h.

To answer your question, I don't think it changes anything, but saying no to stock recovery flash seems to be the right way to go. And no, stock ROM does not interfere with the custom recovery.

It's alright everything's working now Now another problem popped out I wiped my internal memory which means all my photos and everything non system related, and it did, my tab was practically empty buttt the tab doesn't register it as that ._. The storage part in settings shows that I have used up like 12GB of space even though I have wiped everything clean, I did an SD card folder analysis with ES file explorer and although it showed the same 12GB used, the folders shown do not add up to that, could it be the indexes are not updated? Because I don't see anything that could be eating up all that space

If the sdcard is empty, that means something is hogging your space somewhere in /data. What version of Android were you on before and now?
