[Q] To Root or Not to Root....the Question - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Ok.....so I have side loaded apps onto my Nook Tablet and they work great. When the 1.4.1 update came this week I wasn't able to add more apps by side loading, but I really don't want any others, just the ones I already have--mostly Amazon apps for video, kindle, and such which all still work. So I really don't need to root my tablet, but the question that is haunting me is whether B&N will issue a new update that will make my working side loaded apps inoperative. And what would be worse is if they also put out an update that would stop the ability of loading the 1.4.0 from the sd card. And that would mean no one could root who has been updated to that new update.
Any ideas on whether B&N would or could do these things? If so, I think I will want to root as soon as possible, but if not I'm happy with the way things are at the moment and in that case I would leave it just as it is.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.......

About the concerns you have you are definitely right B&N can do that but as always devs here will try to find a way to fix but as i see it things are getting harder so i will say go for it go back to stock, root and block that OTA that is pulling user's hair . There is a method going to have 1.4.1 with root and working android market but still you have to first go back to stock.
Veronica

I never wanted to root myself (I need root on my phone, not so much on my tablet), I just wanted to be able to sideload. Now that they've attacked that, there's no reason to believe they won't go farther.
If you can't get everything you need/want from the current B&N ecosphere, then not rooting is rolling the dice. Maybe they'll stop with that, or maybe they'll even loosen up and give easy sideloading back at some point (such was the rumor a week ago), but I'm not inclined to trust them at the moment. If you root now and block OTA, then you don't have to trust them.

Thank you!
I'm a little confused here. Can B&N actually force an update on you? Or is it like the iphone, where they notify you that an update is available and then you decide whether to update or not?
I'm little wary of a company that would force an update to my device, without letting me know or giving me the option to decline. Is this really how B&N works? If so, I don't know if I'm gonna keep my Nook Tablet. I prefer to decide when I'm gonna update, not leave it in someone else's hands.
Anyone know anything about this?

you don't have a choice, the update will appear and update your device. if you look in the nook color thread there was a work around to prevent it I believe. same way google market would auto update without a workaround.
I ran cm7 off of sd and kept stock nook so i didn't really care.
I haven't rooted the tablet yet since I'm betting b&n will patch the loophole and I want to see how things play out. if it is true they locked the bootloader to get netflix hd it kinda sucks. I'm sure netflix didn't have a choice in requiring that either.
yet again, the avg. person gets screwed with the idea you can protect your content when in reality it won't stop people from stealing.

+1.......................
Well I'm not too technically savvy, so if I can't follow any of the methods to block OTAs, then I guess I'm gonna have to return the tablet. It's a great device but I don't like the idea of suddenly being unable to use 3rd party apps that I paid for from Amazon, as well as apps that allow me to watch divx files, etc. I wasn't even planning on rooting, I'm fine with just sideloading apps. But if B&N removes that ability, that greatly decreases the value of the tablet, sadly. Might as well return it while I'm still within my 2 weeks and seek out a device that's slightly less restrictive.
It's a shame because I've been looking for a tablet for a long time and I really thought the nook might be the one. I guess the search continues.
Don't panic
Again - this is a really new topic. Don't return / cancel your order based on OTA updates.
The devs will come up with something really simple that takes care of it - give them a few days.

Hey that's a really good point actually.
If we don't log into BN.com, how do they even know that we own a Nook?
I haven't logged in and have no plans to do so, so maybe that means my nook won't automatically update?
Perhaps?

Thing is, if you never registered your nook with B&N- how do they even know you have one?
It's not like there's some central computer out there that detects nooks and updates them when it finds them.
Seems to me (and I could be wrong) that if you don't access B&N services, they have no way of knowing you even own a nook.
Unless the Nook itself somehow "phones home" without your permission- how would B&N know about it, much less update it?
Anyone (more in the know) have thoughts about this?
If I do root the device and it does autoupdate, will it brick my device?
Another good question is, can you use your nook without registering it with B&N?
I'm tempted to restore mine, just to see if I can fire it up without needing to register. I'm never gonna use B&N services, so there's no point.
Another question: can you DEregister a nook from B&N?
Curious...
I was never able to bypass the registration screen after a factory reset. I think you HAVE to register.
Can't you just block the update server in your HOSTS file by pointing it to loopback or something?
On the Nook Color you could manually download the update file and drop it into the root of /mnt/media (I think that was the folder) and it would install when the device was idle. If you can figure out what the file name is you might also be able to create a file with the same name and remove all permissions so that it can't be overwritten (hence no update).

Yeah I was wondering about that. Well that's discouraging.
However I'm still wondering about what happens if you're never logged into your nook account. B&N can create the update, but how can they push it to your nook if you're not logged in?
Granted with this method you could NEVER log in, but frankly I could live with that.
You can de-register your device by signing into the B&N website on your computer and going to the device section for your profile. I think if you do it from the tablet it will force a factory reset.

[Q] Should I get a galaxy tab 7.0 plus or a nook tablet?

I can't decide. I've watched youtube videos of both of them and they both look impressive. The nook tablet being $150 cheaper than the galaxy tab is very nice. But I'm hesitating because last summer I bought a nook color and wasn't all that impressed with it even after rooting it. The overall performance didn't meet my expectations. It's sluggish, N64oid doesn't work on the latest cyanogenmod for it, the internet browser crashes, I keep losing my wi-fi connection, etc. In the youtube videos I watched the rooted nook tablet looks like it fixed all of these issues. But I'm still not sure. I don't wanna make the same mistake again. I want a full android experience. Even if it means spending the extra money on the galaxy tab. What should I do?
The Nook Tablet is MUCH faster than the Nook Color (I had one), but I don't have N64oid, so I don't know the performance of running that.
To be honest, if you want PURE Android OS experience WITHOUT the hassle of sideloading GoLauncher, preventing OTA updates, etc..etc.., then get the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus. But if cost is important and you don't mind fiddling with the above, then go with the Nook.
I had the Nook Tablet since it came out and I spent more time trying to get it to work as a pure Android tablet than actually enjoying it, such as sideloading app, figuring out why certain apps doesn't work, etc.. and NOW I got the dreaded 1.41 update.
I am still trying to figure out this 1.4.1 update. When I revert back to 1.4.0, in order to use the NT, I had to turn on Wifi and register. Afterwards, I tried to sideload GoLauncher because I need to download Android Market app in order to get Titanium Backup (TB). TB is required to prevent the OTA update. However, before I get to downloading TB, I received the freakin OTA update again!!
I just want an Android tablet that I can use AND cheap, but apparently the headache of all the above made me not really enjoying the Tablet. So I am putting up my NT for sale and buying the Galaxy 7.0 Plus OR Galaxy Note, whenever it comes out here in the USA
The above is just my experience, so your mileage may vary.
the dilema is simple if you have the money go for the galaxy tab if someday the nook tablet gets the bootloader finally unlocked then u could sell your galaxy tablet and go for the nook tablet and get some bucks back to you , but if you get to love and need the whole (camera + other addons) experience then stick with the galaxy
That was actually very helpful. It does sound like a hassle/headache. Thanks.

I am fine with no camera, but I think the final straw was when I am trying to go back to 1.4.0 AND stop the OTA from happening again. Twice I tried the method I posted above, TWICE I get the OTA update before I can prevent it.
I know CM7 will come in when the bootloader is unlocked, but it probably will be months away before it becomes stable on the Tablet.

Hey guys, who should I sell my nook color too? And how much can I expect to get for it?
Try Amazon.com. Search for the "Nook Color" and when it show up, look at the right side, there is a button that state "Sell yours here".
I avoid eBay because of the scammers and Paypal HOLD your money for 2-4 weeks before releasing it to you. If the buyer "complaint" about your item, valid or not, then Paypal hold it even longer.
Not sure the going price for the NC nowadays.

In excellent condition, about $120 (unless you have extra accessories). Remember that B&N refurbs with a standard 1-year warranty are $149.

The 1.4.1 update is 283 MB. You must have a relatively fast connection
After restoring to 1.4.0 via Adam_Outler's method, you could try downloading something very large on your pc (large enough to effect the speed of all the devices on your network) while configuring the nook tablet to be rooted. Really all you need to download onto the Nook Tablet itself to root is the tgps_launcher.apk. Turn off your wifi after downloading it and then root. Continue to keep your wifi off on the NT.
On your pc, download the android central sideloading wonder machine here. Also the titantium backup apk from here. Use the sideloading wonder machine to install titantium backup. You need to have USB debugging enabled on the tablet just like during the rooting process via tgps_launcher. Now you can follow indirect's OTA blocking method here (all while keeping wifi off), and you should be safe.
The only time you will have wifi on is from first registering the device to downloading the tgps_launcher from here.
After the tgps_launcher is installed, there should be no need to turn on wifi until after you get the update block.
xdahgary was the person who suggested using the sideloading wonder machine, so credit goes to him (and indirect who figured out adb install works) for finding a way to sideload without having to use the web browser after the getting access to the development settings menu via tgps_launcher.
Thanks for the information. Didn't know I can download TB instead going to Market. I'll try it out and see how it goes.
My Internet speed is 24 Mbps, but average throughput is about 21 Mbps, so I think it's not that fast. Not sure how my Tablet can attempt to download the update so fast. But with WiFi off, should be no issue.

I just spent hours trying to get by the first step: going back to 1.4.0.
I followed the link above (AdamOutler's method) and downloaded the file (acclaim-update_stockrecovery.zip). Put it in the SD card and then put the card into the NT. Rebooted NT....nothing happened, just back to NT normal screen.
I tried 4 different SD cards (Kingston, Transcend, SanDisk with varying size, from 4GB to 32GB) and same..nothing.
I viewed the YouTube video instructions and noted the filename that was downloaded is "acclaim-update.zip", no "_stockrecovery" word. So I renamed the file and tried again.... same thing.
So the 1st step failed..so far. I am also preparing for the 2nd step, which is getting the Android Central Sideload wonder and the link for the Mac is DOWN. I don't have a Windows box, so I have to wait till someone posted the link again.
This is what I meant in my post no. 2 above, where it just taking TOO MUCH of MY TIME just to get the NT function as a pure Android OS (I don't care about GPS or Camera). It's not fun going to Fry's Electronics, bought THREE (3) different SD cards and found out none of them works for restoring to 1.4.0, AMONG OTHER THINGS that I have to do to get to pure Android OS.
Not complaining against the NT, nor to the people who helped me with the instructions, but I just want something that doesn't take too much of my time.

Was LITERALLY about to post about that same link...
anyways...i was debating on taking it back as well...i just can't anymore...even with a locked boatloader, i still have, essentially, UNLIMITED storage...sure, i gotta swap out sd cards, but hey wtf...i can have 16gb of TV shows, 8gbs of movies, and 32gb of music...and all of fits in my wallet....no cloud needed, no wifi needed, BUT if want, i got the flix and crackle on there too!!
so in the end....sure we may have a locked bootloader, but we can still use ADW and get most of the apps we want online...it's not as easy, but its still cheaper and slicker...
B&N will either unlock it soon, it is the holiday season people and not everyone is working, or some amazing dev will see that shiny weak spot in the code....patience....
hell, over at the SGSII forum, they have the ICS code for weeks now and still don't have a stable ROM on that beast of phone....patience....
Progress seems to be being made on the bootloader over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378886
Nexus S 4G 4.0.3
The remainder are incompatible micro SD cards. My 16GB Sandisk wouldn't work but a 4GB Sandisk did work.
With respect to the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, I'm tempted to turn in my Nook and get this. The frustration level has already exceeded the additional cost. I'd also like a SIP app like Sipdroid or Csipsimple to work on this device but so far I haven't found any. I suspect this wouldn't be an issue on the Galaxy.

Yes I need help with side loading lol

OK here's the issue, I really don't want to root my wife's tablet but I'm confused. I originally was able to put on the amazon app store and had no problem until the new update. I keep reading that if you were able to side load before the update it didnt change your settings. But every time I try all these new ways of doing it it doesn't work. So I really don't know why all these people are saying that these ways work cause I can't seem to get them to. Has anyone actually tried these on a never rooted nook that worked before the update changed. I don't mean to vent but I'm getting frustrated.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
If you had apps sideloaded prior to the update to 1.4.1, they should still work. However, the actual update to 1.4.1 broke the ability to (easily) sideload. I've blocked OTA updates on my unit, and am staying at the 1.4.0 software because of this.
It is possible to roll back to 1.4.0, but it's not trivial to do.

[Q] So what do you lose (if anything) by rooting?

I don't have a NT but a friend's wife does and she was asking about rooting it the other day. I told her I wasn't exactly sure how to do it or what would be the consequences. I have since found the thread here that shows me how but my search-fu appears to be broken and I can't seem to find what breaks with root. Can anyone give me a link or tell me what she'll lose access to when/if we root her NT?
Thanks.
- Aerlock
You don't lose anything unless in the process of doing so you decide to debloat (i.e. remove some of the B&N apps like Sudoku). Rooting simply takes the device out of the B&N walled garden. To quote one source: "rooting is the process of circumventing the existing OS or skin that the device ships with, allowing for a new ROM, mod or operating system to be loaded onto it. Rooting also provides access to more of a device's functions"
You shouldn't lose anything and in fact gain quite a lot (i.e. access to the Android Market, ability to buy Amazon books, etc).

you cant use the read in store function dun dun dun....
I retain B&N stuff on my NT (i.e. not total debloat). The OTA blocker prevents me from receiving further updates from B&N, naturally of course.
As I understand it, the difference between 1.4.1 and 1.4.0 is minor, I am still on 1.4.0, but it could be a problem down the road.

Did you guys try the OTA rootkeeper.

Getting Back to 9.9.9? (i.e. OTA block)

So I had to have my NT swapped out due to hardware failure and now I'm back to square one in terms of rooting and OTA blocking, etc.
I got the root taken care of (it's way easier now than when I first tried it last December) but I'm still showing firmware 1.4.0 and I think that means I'm susceptible to OTA updates. I'd really like to use Idirect's blocking method that changes the firmware to 9.9.9 and blocks updates, but for the life of me- I can't remember how I did it. Nor can I find instructions in the forums (or elsewhere) that will help me retrace my steps.
Can anyone point me in the direction of Indirect's OTA block? Or maybe there's something new out that's better now? It's been a while since I've dipped my toe into this pool so I'm a little green when it comes to this stuff. Regardless, any info anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Since you've gotten yourself back to 1.4.0 try this thread

Good Luck
Actually the refurbished Nook came with 1.4.0 already on it. So that was lucky.
Thanks for the link, really appreciate it.
Wouldn't using the OTA block inside of the "hidden setting" app do that for you and also give you a few more adjustment?
True, but why not use both 9.9.9 and the block in the hidden settings app?
You can't have too many levels of security when it comes to keeping Barnes and Noble's hands off our devices.
I am with you there, such as does the hidden setting block work with debug turned off which I believe occurs on every cold start. I sure hope it does.
