Simulate Screen Size? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to simulate a specific screen size when running an app? I am getting a MotoActv and I want to try apps out on my Atrix before throwing them on the Actv. It has a QCIF+ screen and naturally not everything is going to work on it (but Angry Birds does!)
So is there a way to spoof a specific screen size when launching an app?

Maybe changing the screen density on the phone with "LCD Density" from the market, Unless someone knows what to mess around with in the files of the app itself.

[Q] CM7+DPI+Lapdock?

I don't believe this has been asked before as I've run a few searches so hopefully someone can help me out. I have a few questions as I'm trying to get the DPI of the phone to automatically change when I plug it into the lapdock on a CM7 rom, so it changes to more of a tablet size for landscape mirroring.
First -- Is there app to easily change the DPI of your phone on one of the CM7 builds w/o rebooting? If so, would it be possible to have the DPI automatically change when plugged into the lapdock? (Maybe using Tasker?)
(I know some of the CM9 builds has DPI changing built in, but I record with the camera enough to justify not switching.)
Second (if above is possible)-- What I would like to happen is have separate phone profiles or home screens; one for when the phone is docked, and a regular one. Is there some kind of app where I could make this work? (I just don't want to keep my phone at tablet DPI when its not docked as everything is just too small, so I figured using different "profiles" or something where I could quickly switch would address that)
I hope I made the questions clear enough, lack of sleep from playing with GenTop2 on a blur rom is taking its toll. Thanks.
No automatic dpi change yet, you have to reboot or it won't take effect. The guys working on CM9 and the kitchen sink project are working on it already.

Prevent screen timeout for games

Is there any way to disable screen timeout when playing games? Example is angry birds, Sometimes when I'm just waiting for the level to complete and the score to tally up, the screen turns off.

Turn on Smart Stay.........Maybe.
or set your screen timeout for more that 15-30 seconds.
easy peasy
Smart stay doesn't work within games or apps, at least that's what the help pop up says when you enable it.
I was hoping for a more automatic solution.

i have not seen any setting on my knowledge that enables the screen to stay on while a game is going.......so games keep the screen on no matter what. others default to the system settings and if your not pressing the screen then it thinks the phone is idle
Try an App called Screen Timeout Toggle, it's a widget that keeps the screen on permanently or a set time.
Post a comment on the game page for the game dev's, a time out should be built into the game like most games. It may come in the form of an update in the future.

I realised it just today and while digging for some info I bumped onto this thread.
It seems quite awkward to me that prevent from sleep is not endorsed by default in all games' code, especially ones that are built by companies and not amateur developers, like Rovio for example...user should be able to change the setting from the game menu if he wishes different screen behaviour and not be forced to adjust a global setting like the screen timeout everytime he wants to play a game.
You can use the Tasker app. Set a context for each game. context = <insert game here>, task = screen timeout to none. When the game is no longer in focus, it should revert to the previous screen time out, or set an exit task

Way to make screen even dimmer?

I have the 5.0 and while I love the large screen, I find the screen can be too brighy even with the brightness at the lowest setting. Is the device hardware limited or is there anything that can be done?
Try screen filter: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor

This has been a pain for me as well, and I make due with screen filter. I just wish there was some way to modify the system so you could actually lower it more and save battery.

if i'm correct, what screen filter does to make the screen looks dimmer is it "puts" a black image on top of the screen, so it always runs in the background to make the screen dimmer
on my tf300 i use rootdim, it actually lowers the brightness settings the way samsung/android/system does, the difference it lowers more than the system allows, even to completely black. so after you use it to lower the brightness, it doesn't have to always run like screen filter -> no (or at least less than screen filter) battery drain
I have had great success using RootDim on my Acer A500 (rooted, stock ROM). However, I could not get the brightness to go any lower than the system minimum when trying it on my Galaxy Player (5.0, rooted, stock ROM).
If you're on another ROM maybe you'll have better luck or there's always the Screen Filter method. Or if anyone else knows of a way to do this I'd be curious what worked for you.
yeah, your best bet is a third-party app that lets you specify the actual brightness level.

Hidden Goods

Note: This is NOT the regular hidden (crappy) camera app
1. Get Rooted
2. Remove (temporarily) your password (i made the mistake of not doing this..grrr)
3. Grab ROM Toolbox (lite will work)
4. Open ROM Toolbox (yes... allow Superuser)
5. Slide/tab over to performance and select build.props Tweaks
6. Slide your LCD Density down to 200. VM Heap stays same (mine is 256m)
7. Hit apply at the bottom...and reboot.
8. When it comes up at lockscreen...slide finger left and away from lock...
9. Magically, there is now a Camera icon.
10. This camera has options...video, upload to youtube, etc...
* I have paid the 15$ to remove ads...so maybe if yours does not have the same result.
So, what gives here? Is this the picture/video app that runs on the upperclass large Kindle Fire HDs?
Did I just miss this in the update?
I read all these articles about camera...and then this is here the whole time.
When you return to stock LCD Density it goes away. WTF?
I hope someone finds this useful.
Reference step # 2 - If you are wondering, the reason that I even found this, was cause I was playing with ROM Toolbox...and I changed my LCD Density the WRONG way to 300 (DONT DO THIS). Then I could not even login with my normal password, cause all of the keys were not visible. So I had to sys restore...all lame.

Thin has nothing to do with any build...all that it does is change the display. Font to pixel ratio or some crap. I just find it flippin interesting that it actually displays a diff unlock screen. Then, when set back, it reverts.
Why doesn't my stock unlock screen have a camera Icon?
Very nice Lockscreen now. Do you know what kind of entries we can change in the prop tweaks?
But when i change the LCD Value, the Auto Brightness Buttons in the Notificationbar are unvisble and the Brightness are very high.

What a surprise and how odd to see the camera in the lock screen (I didn't know existed). I too am rooted and using the Go Launcher EX HD and have been using the ICS camera from market.
I liked this but it ended up messing up my keyboard, so I went back to normal screen density.
I changed the Value to the standard too because the Autobrightness wont working

I'm keeping dpi @210 - it provides more benefits then problems - now all apps behaves as a tablet version in contrast to phablet @240. I'm not using the native keyboard anyway so I don't mind if it messed up after the dpi change. The only problem - black lock screen, but it's more funny with a camera icon on it.

[Q] Want to tweak Car Mode a little bit..

Hey there! I was hoping someone much smarter than i figured these things out and was willing to guide me My phone is a motorola atrix 4g (as reference to any reader )
I would like Car Mode to extend the display timeout from normal use to about an hour
Can I change the "Wake Up" phrase, and if so, where/how?
Can I get it to call open other applications other than the 4 default (hoping to add Torque?
Can I add my screens and buttons?
Thank you so much to all for your help!
For keeping your display on, you could use screebl. With that, the phone has to be flat before it goes into sleep.
Check out the lapdock thread, think they're trying to automate screen resolution change when docked. Should be able to work if you set it up right.
Also, if you're on the stock ROM, try Smart Actions app by Motorola. Think they had an option for car dock.

with "IntelliScreen - screen control" app you can set custom screen timeouts for almost any application.
