Hello,
I want to buy photon/electrify for using at outside of USA(particularly in Turkey) with gsm service.
I assume both of them comes gsm unlocked. Are you guys have any spesific information about that?
Also bootloader unlocking with electrify is seems a bit tricky. Is it still impossible to unlock 2.3.5? are custom roms compatible with each-other?
feel free to write any other usefull information. thanks in advance.
so, nobody uses electrify and photon should be right decision. thank you guys.

I feel like I'm taking what you're saying out of context but ummm...(looks at signature) there are a few people using the Electrify lol
But I believe both phones are world capable phones (I don't think the Electrify is locked down with any unusual US Cellular bull ****). I'd probably go with the Photon simply because it'll be more easily available as well as overall carrier support.
Edit: as far as ROM's go, from my usage, unless specifically stated, the ROM's we have available in our dev section now work for both the Photon and Electrify. As for unlocking, I had zero problems getting my phone to unlock, flash a recovery, etc. But I do have 2.3.5 and I know people with newer versions have problems so YMMV.

Go with photon...
I use the Photon in New Zealand and it works great, it's only GSM locked for US carriers.
I must say photon is better and more likely to get official ics.

altough photon is clearly better choice, i might buy an electrify. becasue i found a good deal at ebay. just one more question about this subject;
does electrify comes with 2.3.5 from factory? if not, i assume i can easily unlock it's bootloader. right?
I'm using the Electrify and love it. It is world phone capable. It comes with 2.3.4 as far as I know and after you root/unlock it you can flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403322 to get 2.3.5. Thanks to yepitsme19 for this and to all the Photon/Electrify devs for all their hard work!

Hate to burst your bubble there sir, BUT...if your Electrify has Android 2.3.5, then you are UNABLE to unlock the bootloader, myself and others are looking into ways to re-unlock the bootloader...again. However, if you are running 2.3.4 then you are set to jet, there is links and info for you, I think there is also a way to disable the 2.3.5 update as well.

Are you guys able to SBF? That may help if there is specific files for the electrify. NOTE: DO NOT TRY TO SBF A SPRINT FILE!!!
I have the Photon, so I have no idea. Motorola doesn't like Sprint, they love Verizon, so that's why we will never get the update on our Photons, including 1080p, or Ice Cream Sandwich, because Motorola hates Sprint, so they barely do anything for them. Any other carrier, sure.
[rant] Like you guys got 1080p updates on yours, and Android 2.3.5, we didn't yet (my phone is having issues for checking for updates so I believe that this is true, but yeah....) I know we haven't gotten 1080p yet, if we ever will. I bet someone will have to port it over, cuz we probably won't get it.
I hate to say it, but you guys will probably get Ice Cream Sandwich, and we won't.
That's how Motorola treats Sprint, and Sprint's customers. We are lucky we even have this phone on Sprint, but if it was on Verizon, it would get ICS, no doubt, but Motorola is faking this relationship with Sprint, because if they wre for real, we would have more high-end Motorola devices at least planned for the Now Network. [/rant]
I have a motorola electrify on us cellular, i'm new to the whole rooting thing and CM7, i played on a friends phone that have CM7 and fell in love. Im wondering if someone on here can point me in the right direction on everything i need to do to get CM7 on my motorola electrify?
Thanks
Josh
on the home screen click menu>settings>about, what version of android are you running?
Gingerbread 2.3.4
ah, one of the lucky ones. first things frist. DO NOT UPDATE. now that we have taken care of that. if you go here this should take care of you. there is not a lot for the electrify in the Photon section ask over there frist. alot of the guys are on both sites but mea.

Well, i got my photon fixed, and here's the kicker, the new one has 2.3.4 on it, and i know now to not accept the update, so what should i do guys? i'm already in the samsung family with my note 2, but i still have appreciation for my photon, so any suggestions for 2.3.4?
Root, unlock, find your choice of JB ROM.
wow...i never looked into it...the photon seems extremely difficult to unlock :/

i checked it out and the other threads and i just tried for an hour or so, keeps failing in RSD and just won't unlock, so unless i'm doing something wrong, i think i can honestly give up here?
RSD always fails. Try looking through the big fancy Compendium at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393519
Unlock isn't hard, but unlock and still keeping the WiMax is still impossible. If you don't care about WiMax then just use the Note II domestically and flash ICS/JB rom on the Photon for international use.

I understand this, there's lte in my area so wimax isn't a breaker for me (plus the fact that I have 3 other 4g phones) but that's the thing, it really isn't that hard, I'm just running into a brick wall with the failing and I can't get it to work and can't find any info on anything, I'd really like to get my photon on at&t to be honest, but can't get this working :/
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
did some more tinkering, got everything unlocked and working, now my photon is on at&t, and all is good, screw moto for saying these phones won't run JB!
Alright, I'm tired of this bootloader crap! I need anyone and everyone interested in helping me get this MoPho'in bootloader unlocked on 2.3.5!
We have WAY to many people stuck on GB (after Moto said we'd have ICS ) on this beast of a phone!
Before anyone asks, YES i have the skills to do this, just not enough to do it quickly.
With that said I do bring some skills to the table.
I can program in the Android language and port just about anything anyone can come up with.
I know my tech (to put it short)
Please anyone with the same feeling as me, come help me out in ANY way possible. Even if it's just testing. I would greatly appreciate it!
Please people!
I am not a dev. But I would be glad to help. As a suggestion, Perhaps we could start by finding a solution for unlocking mophos that were factory shipped with 2.35 such as is done with the electrify. It could provide a lot of insight.

Hmm well I learned that sprint was a big reason the BL got locked. The Electrify sbf (Yes i flashed it) is unlockable easily however my radios dont work so i cant have that. I did find some cool things inside the System partition. I rooted it up and got a file browser (ES). The blocks where the BL is has a special file called infooemenc.encf assuming this has to do with our "fastboot oem unlock" command problem. That file however was a fluke. My phone soft reset itself (doesnt like the Electrify rom) and POOF gone... Very suspicious. i had to relock to go back to photon state though
Add me to the crew. I'm happy to help as a dev, or otherwise if we need something else.

wait what?
you do realize the same phone shipped months earlier on a different carrier and was locked? (and then was released later too).
moto's first device to offer unlocking services was a sprint device. rather than jumping on teh locked samsung bandwagon they are still one of teh few companies that have most of their devices unlockable. as well as their tech support doesnt care if you are rooted as if its a software issue they are going to flash stock.

Yes I know but there was a slight difference in the 2.3.5 factory Electrify that somehow caused an exploit (when i said it was easy i meant it was for me)
But still on the current matter we want this BL unlocked and there HAS to be a way! That's why people are joining up. They wanna be out of the hole Moto decided to throw us into. (After lying about ICS)

To devs:
Instead of trying to find a way to crack the boot loader why can we make a boot able sdcard that works around the bootloader? Like for the nooks the bootloader is still locked but we can run custom ROMs off the sdcard without any problems.. Just a thought..

Caveat Emptor: I did use the search feature and did some reading, but still am confused.
I have a Sprint Motorola Photon 4G, still running 2.3.4.
To date, it is my understanding that unlocking my bootloader still kills Wimax 4G. From what I've found, all barriers seem to exist with devices running 2.3.5.
I'm still running 2.3.4. Would I still lose Wimax 4G if I unlock my bootloader?
Would it be possible to unlock my bootloader, flash a ROM, then relock my bootloader and keep 4G?
(I may have asked this awhile back somewhere, but I used to work overnights and memory gets fuzzy of online activities from that time)

Unlocking kills wimax. To keep 4g, you'd need to keep a rom based on stock with a stock kernel with a locked bootloader. Even then there are instances that'll kill wimax, like flashing a bootstrapped rom while staying locked. Bottom line is don't unlock bootloader if you want to keep wimax.

Unlocked boot loaders are not illegal. Changing carriers by unlocking the programming its illegal. Such as AT&T changed to T-Mobile.

Please modify this post. This is utterly untrue. Having information like this out there just spreads fear, should some unknowing individual come and read it and get the wrong impression.
Well, legal or illegal, Motorola appears to have made any discussion of criminal law a moot (sp?) point.
I need wimax and Moto says if I want to unlock any bootloaders I can haz no 4g, so no unlocking to be done. Thanks for simplifying this!
Unlocking the bootloader is not illegal. Unlocking the carrier lock without the carrier's permission is, but only on subsidized phones sold after 1/26/2013.
