Dejavu - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I feel like this is a repeat of the original transformer launch.
Does Asus do this on purpose to increase demand or something? Or can it be possible that they are really this bad as a company at launching products? Did they learn nothing from the last botched launch? I feel like I'm in the exact same position I was with trying to find and order the TF101...

How long did it take to bring better TF1 after it's bad launch?

even so the OG transformer was held as a runaway unground hit and success. almost all major reviewers held it as the best Android tablet of its time. even won the PC Magazines Gold Tablet of the Year award.
like in real life, its not about how hard you fall down, in the end, it only matters how fast and stronger you get up and continue pressing on. Prime is no different. Still the best out right now that nothing can touch it. want to speculate on later releases, OK, ill specualte even further down the road then you did...lol.

This is just the beginning of the prime the good is yet to come so everyone just relax and watch this tablet evolve

I think Asus has a great design team, but suits run the show and push their products out too fast, and we end up with these messy launches. If the company cared a little less about the short term bottom line, and more about putting out solid products (which any smart business will know has a larger effect on the long term bottom line) they would be an unbeatable company. As it stands they're half way there but fall a little short.

Best alternative currently available?

So, I'm getting really frustrated with all of the stuff I've been reading about the Prime. I got mine just before Christmas and it hasn't given me any major problems, a couple of nuisance things here and there. But what I'm worried about is the talk of it being discontinued already, what kind of dev support is this going to get, the possibility of some issues popping up down the road, and the feeling of having paid $500 for a flawed product. I've been holding off from returning it in hopes of some miracle fix coming along or some announcement from ASUS that they'll offer some sort of upgrade for the early adopters. But, as I get close to my 30 day return window closing, i have to consider what to do...
So, if you were going to buy something today that isn't the Prime, what would it be, and why?
Also, do you think my logic is flawed? Should i continue to "wait and see"?
Thanks for your input.

I returned mine, and bought the original TF-101. It can't match the Prime is processor power, but everything on it works perfectly, and it was $100 cheaper.
There is no alternative. Stop feeding into the rumours n hype. I'd you would take a look in Android developement you would already see we got alot going on. We got root less than a couple days after ICS release. We already have overclocking on the prime. We already have Linux running on prime. Come on now.. Plus most people spreading the rumours don't know jack or even own a prime. There are lots of people without even owning the device taking b.s. and spreading stuff like they know what's going on. Most rumor threads are always false n should be taken with a grain of salt. There are members here out to bash the prime or make it look bad so to try to scare people off from it. READ the positive threads more instead of the nonsense..lol
People will believe anything they read SMH lmfao
I like how you changed it to Discuss..lol.
Rumors of discontinue? Replacements with better model?
The problem here is that talk is cheap, and you need to filter out the signal from the noise. If you're happy with your product, then that should be the informing factor. Technology will always be improving and you just have to jump in where you think is best.
I'm not sorry I returned mine. It's a relief to no longer have the Asus dark cloud hanging over my head. I too am looking for a replacement.
Also, there is another thread here today showing a retailer which has already discounted them to $399. Are the fire sales already starting?
The only reason I could see them discontinuing it would be to release a Prime with a new casing fixing the major issues. If they do this I couldn't see them not allowing Prime owners a swap.

This.
Either the current model is not being discontinued (most likely), or they're redesigning it, in which case, they'd have to allow people to RMA/swap out the exisiting model.
The original TF101 and dock or wait to see what the equal from Lenovo is like - as I want the dock! Nite well that had my OG not ended up in it's current damaged state, I would not have bought the Prime.
Now if all I wanted was a tablet, I would probably have gotten the TF101 or the Galaxy Tab (either the aging 10.1 or the newer 7.x). The Samsung having had a 3G version that my carrier used to carry would have sinched it, for the same price point as a TF+dock. Nota bene: while the first Gen of Galaxy Tab 10.1 does have a keyboard dock available for like $80, it doesn't have a battery or net book folding feature like the Transformers do.

I hope they do the latter, it would boost their reputation highly after the near-disaster launch for their PR department. They could even gut the old Primes and then just put the main componants into the new casing and then sell them off at a slightly lower price so they will be hardly losing anything. Either way, I'm still pleased with my Prime, the Wi-Fi works decently in my house where I'll be almost exclusively using it and GPS is a non-issue for me anyway.

$100 cheaper is not a fire sale..lol OTA called a Promo
as far as i can tell, the new t700 will have the same specs except the screen res, as long as we have a few good dev's here we should be ok regardless, i would imagine that alot of the roms that take advantage of the tegra 3 and the radio's on the t700 would be easy enough to apply to the tf201 with some tinkering, and like others have said we already got some good stuff going on in the dev section.
if you want to feel better about your prime go and hang out in there for a a bit the general and q&a portions of the forum have become like the weekly world tabloids, running rampant with rumors of 5 legged bat children and the Bermuda triangle of GPS signals....
i'm right there with you, the loss of dev support is more important to me then almost any other aspect of the tablet it's self, i have never bought a device that the manufacture was more prompt and robust then what some dev random dev has come up with in his moms basement, kind of sad when you think about it. that some multi million dollar corp isn't as good as a few guys just hanging on the internet with a passion, seems like HR needs to find guys who love their job....anyways hang in there and we have a 1 year warranty on our product, all else fails hook it up to a car battery and send it back....lol
When mine was running Honeycomb, I was going to return it and wait for the iPad 3. The Prime was slow and apps were closing and unpredictable.
After the ICS update, this Transformer Prime is hummin' like a beast out of Hades. I love it. I just got the keyboard dock, and now it looks like a netbook. LOL.
Anyway, for those with TP issues, keep talking with ASUS so that they can resolve the issues. I have to say that their customer service has been very strong. If this were Apple, they'd be denying there were any issues!
That being said, if you want a table that has no issues and just works, get an iPad. It may lack some of the technological sophistication that the latest Android tabs have, but that is balanced by a very stable platform.

They released this tablet knowing it had issues, they rushed this tablet to the market and most of us feel cheated! Where is the "Persistent Perfection"? It is their company motto! We need to do this to get them to realize their mistakes!
We can all agree that this tablet is plagued with issues, Big or Small; Noticeable or Not; Software or Hardware; Customer Support or Communication.
Known issues we need to stand up for! Whether you experience them or not!:
BLUETOOTH INCOMPATIBLE WITH WIFI!
WEAK/SLOW WIFI!
GPS NON FUNCTIONING!
SCREEN BLEED!
MELTING/OVERHEATING CHARGERS
UNKNOWN SERIAL #'s!
RANDOM LOCKUPS/REBOOTS!
LESS THAN ACCEPTABLE SUPPORT!
HORRIBLE QUALITY CONTROL!
TERRIBLE RMA EXPERIENCES!
DEAD PIXELS!
DUST UNDER YOUR SCREEN!
ETC!
Then to top it all off they are now dedicating all their resources to multiple new tablets (7000t 3000t, 3g prime, Memo, and the Padphone), instead of doing what is right and fixing the first one!
THE GOAL IS TO ATTACK UNTIL THEY RELEASE SOME SORT OF REPLACEMENT/REFUND/EXCHANGE PROGRAM!

IT WORKED WITH THE BOOTLOADER!
You guys obviously where not here for that! got a response from asus within 48 hours
In some way I don't think it was mostly their falt but ours since we were already rushing them. They did delay the sales because of the quality but demand was to big on our side. People wanted the device knowing it had problems and now most of them are fighting that they didn't pay much attention to the tablet. Even though we wanted it the way it was....... But every body has their views.
How many people agree?

Shut up some of us are out of our return window! and are you not unhappy that they will be releasing versions with fixed GPS and other stuff!
The bootloader thing was completely different, this is way too far, and its worded like a spoiled teenage rant.
What really annoys me is that I see you "OP" genuinely trying to help bring these problems to light and get Asus to do the right thing and fix this debacle of a product. But instead I see trolls trollin your thread. Lame.
I applaud you for your outcry. This really needs Asus's FULL attention. Not just Gary and a few other employees. I have a feeling Asus is going to proceed with the release of the TF700t and leave the TF201 in the dust. If I was Asus I would carefully take a look at what went wrong with the TF201 and figure out how to fix it. Instead of releasing a new product. If these problems aren't fixed by Tuesday I am returning my Prime and dock and going with an iPad 3 or maybe a TF700t. Most likely an iPad 3. I really hope Asus comes through in the next 72 hours.
Try not to get upset with fellow TF201 owners. I guarantee their tone will change once the TF700t arrives with no problems. We are all on the same team.

It was not a cellphone purchased on contract!

No problem. I am here to help.
I know that I have only been a member of this thread for a short while. But I have enjoyed/found most people here to be informitive and entertaining.
Not only is Asus causing me to second guess my 5th TF201 & dock purchase by way of a full refund return, they are alienating me from participating in this wonderful forum full of members with similar interests. After my 5th Prime I'm gone from XDA/Asus.
I really hope it doesn't come down to this.
Ok guys, i feel ya. It sucks getting a faulty product especially over and over. No argument there.
But these issues are only present in a small percentage of Primes. And most of them only apply to artificial situations. For instance wifi: I have a a ~16 Mbps connection. What if my wifi drops to 8 Mbps for some seconds while watching youtube? I wont even notice. So for 95% of Prime users those wifi "issues" dont exist. Me included even though i get pretty steady results.
Minor screen bleed is present on almost all IPS panels even your precious ipads (you should get one, they are perfect devices, will never have problems and last 100 years - sry irony took over ). And again, the only place you notice screen bleed is on startup screen or if your in complete darkness looking at a black page and turning IPS+ on.
So the amount of people that have gone through several primes is very very small. Even here on XDA most people dont experience these issues in a way that the device becomes less fun or even unusable.
By logic the amount of people that will sign this petition and send some spam mail will never be enough to actually achieve something. Sorry man
The bootloader thing was something completely different. Companies locking up bootloaders is something that affects every freakin Android user. So i'm pretty sure there were many people that didnt even plan on buying a prime signing that petition. The same way i have signed the HTC petition and will sign every single one about locking bootloaders of Android devices. Plus, i'm almost certain ASUS already planned it when the petition started.
Again it sucks buying and waiting for such a product and then having a faulty device. Happened to everyone once... But all you can do is, return it and hope for getting a working replacement. Buying another product, or waiting for the next Transformer model from ASUS.
And btw when i read TF700T will have no issues, all i can say is lol. Its like saying the world will end in 2012. Wait... Maybe the two things are linked in some higher plan we dont understand yet!!!??? I think i'm on to something here...

I agree. Most of the TF201 returns I heard about from customer service at my local Bestbuy were transactions that resulted in a full refund not exchange. Most people would return and move on to iPad 3, TF700t etc......
Do you really believe that after this mess of a release Asus is gonna release another defective product? I don't think so. I'm sure Asus's legal department/engineering is working together to provide a "Asus Inspiring Innovation Persistent Perfection" product with the release of the TF700t.
While I'm not quite as zealous as the OP, I do feel that ASUS needs to address the issues listed above. They undoubtedly knew there were pretty severe engineering issues with the prime before release if not, then quite soon thereafter. The weak wifi and nonexistent GPS are unquestionable. The other QA problems are more or less expected

Its fair enough. All I would want is people to vote honestly. N I feel the ones that like the prime always do. That's how all this type polls turn out the same. Majority loves the prime n want to keep it. We know prime has its flaws, for me GPS. But when you get a good working one, like me..lol, its too hard to deny that this is a great device. Just glad I don't have to deal with issues to take away from my enjoyment of it. Its like the prime stays glued to my hands now..lol my ipad just sits n collect dust now if my girl not using it..lol
I voted "Not decided". I have only had for a few hours and I Love everything about this Tablet except for the Wifi weakness and that might not be a deal breaker. The reason I got a Tablet was for my wife to take to meetings where she needs Wifi access for Webpages and the ability for her to transfer Documents and Data she has on our PC to the Tablet and vice versa. We had a 7 year old Laptop she had been using and it was time for an update anyhow and she loves the size and weight of a tablet. The Prime is PERFECT for her if she can get good WiFi at Conference meetings in Convention Centers and Hotels. She really doesn't have a meeting until April where she needs the Tablet so I am going to have to try to test the Wifi in some areas before hand since I have the 14 days I can return to Best Buy.
How often will you "wife" get to use it?

About 70% so far like the prime and keeping it. This number will only get higher.
This is all The Delphi effect. The opinion of the masses will have more merit than the opinion of one random chosen person. Sociologists have discovered that and that alone determines the mood of what's really going on. Whenever it comes time to poll voting, those displeased or riddled with issues can never muster up the numbers to truely reflect the what's really going on. Also the excuse of oh people returned tablet n moved on is b.s. they mostly all still here watching and posting here. Seen tons that "Supposedly" returned device for good or "Done" with forums yet they hang around to make sure to try to bash. Lol its all funny actually but very obvious.
The Delphi effect will always determines what's really going on within a mass or group. Poll votes show only on the surface, front page general news, may look bad, but overall its a completely different story and complete opposite of what's it seeming like.
If you don't know what the Delphi effect means, look it up. Then all this will start to make sense on what's really going on.
clap your hands y'all, it's alright.
I have four Android tablets and sold off the fifth. My Prime is the best of the lot. It is not perfect, but the best.
Bye.
Love it and Keeping it....even if I have been bitten by the last update....I have confidence that ASUS will resolve the issues, its a new device on new software....its prime (pun intended) for issues.....but the sheer power of this device is awesome...and am a proud to own this beast.
I Like the style on mine personally that's about it. It works real good if I sit right beside my router and use it. Probably going to take it back, I love the design though I just wish my WiFi was better, then I would keep it for sure. I might just wait and get the Lenovo Tegra 3 or Samsung Tegra 3 when they come out. I hate to wait though, that's the only thing that will let me keep this is if I fell like I don't want to wait 4-5 months for the other Tegra 3s, but I heard Acer was coming out soon, like in a month or so. Just not a big fan of Acer Tegra 3. I Might get Samsung 8.9 just to hold me over. Its got a dual core 1.4, which will probably overclock close to 2.0GHZ dual core so I'm assuming its runs pretty good.

You add to your theory here I finally voted in one of these polls. I love my prime and will certainly be keeping it.
Wifi works fine everywhere I have used it having no trouble getting and holding a signal. At home I get 100% throughput of my 6mbps line and the router is in the very corner of my bedroom and I lay on the couch on complete opposite corner. My house is about 1500sqft and single level so it's through a door down the hall and around the corner from me.
Screen is great, two tiny spots of lightbleed on bottom left that is only visible on boot screen, it is utterly invisible during use and if it wasn't I would be returning it as I'm a videophile and it would drive me insane. No dead or stuck pixels either as a single one is unacceptable for me on any of my personally owned devices.
Battery is fine and in fact I haven't charged it in over two days now, granted only used it very lightly due to available time but that is still fantastic. The current charge is still 60% in fact.
I only use bluetooth for transferring small files between the tablet and my phone so haven't been able to test slowing of wifi with bluetooth headphones, and not having any wireless headphones probably won't be anytime soon. I do know it's not detrimental to my wife when I am actively using my sixaxis controller with an app of the same name though as I can still browse net without issue and launch ROMs off a mounted folder from my NAS.
Never had a single reboot or sleep of death either (knock on wood).
Don't know what else I can cover really, but the fact this is the first poll I have voted in and I am happy as I am with it shows some proof of the motivation that those that are happy with it have to actively hunt and vote on these things. I just recently started being louder about my satisfaction due to the extremely repetitive nature of a handful of negative posters.
My battery is draining faster after the most recent OTA and I've experienced a couple of lockups over the past week but not enough to make me want to return. I feel like these minor issues will be ironed out by Asus in the next OTA. Hopefully something else won't break, lol.

As I look at my prime I just noticed a little issue that was fixed in the latest OTA. In the stock weather widget it was showing %% and is now showing %. That to me was a tiny issue...and guess what....they fixed it. So something like battery drain will get fixed. ASUS is known for fast responses to their customers. I am not worried about it...they will fix it.

Is Sony listening!

found this while i was looking around;
"Early last month, it was revealed to much outcry that the Transformer Prime had a locked bootloader. Angry customers took to the forums to vent and started a petition to get Asus to change its stance. And just 24 hours later, that's what happened, with Asus promising an unlock tool down the road.
Today Asus delivered, with the unlock tool hitting the TP's support site"

Thanks Sony for not being there.

With Sony being the way they are I can't see it happening. They don't want people to mess around with their software. I don't understand what the problem would be cause if they unblocked it and let people do what they want with their own tablets, then I reckon sales would sore which is what they really want.

Well, I would be happy if we were to start a petition -- but let's be honest here. We are not even 1/6th of the number of users using the Transformer Prime. In fact the Transformer tablet series is almost a runaway success for the company. They have vast number of users compared to us.
We are literally the bottom of the barrel here. We might as well get used to it and at least try to salvage something with our own efforts (bounties and the good posters of this board), but there is one moral of the story here: Never again choose a tablet based on what seems to be a unique function and design. Sadly numbers simply translate to more XDA support. Tablet S will soon be off the market, and Sony is to blame for killing it.

Man to be honest i bought sony because of his price (Got a promotion in Portugal ), the magazine shape, good performance and a great screen image.
We are a small sony s tablet community but really great people here, always helping each other and discover new things.
In this moment i don't need a new rom, because the current is fine, I can do all the things i want, and i'm waiting sony ics.. But maybe with a new rom we can get a better performance, but root was a great discover
I like sony s size too, transformer is bigger and less portable, sony have great dimensions, not too big, not too small, just perfect to take everywhere
I agree its pointless to devote resources to ROM until ICS comes out.
BL unlock on the other hand, I assume the work can be carried across (does ICS change the Bootloader/recovery?)

The prime is dead

Just one year after, the Prime development is dead. Two roms have been updated a month ago and much appreciated work on them. But that's about it. What was once the tablet of the future, Asus made it a flop, A $500 flop at that. How poor, I'll never buy another Asus tablet or PC again. I had mine since day one and have no problems with. I wish everyone could say that.
Thank you for your contribution. We definitely needed another one of these threads.
Long live the Prime!
Yes, as said before, this is the problem with people who jump on these forums and fill it with non-sense, gripe and make an atmosphere of uncertainty and unthankfulness.. Yes, thanks for the positive outlook indeed.

This is not true. lilstevie and tux_mind are VERY close to perfecting an Ubuntu dual boot. Think about it, Volume Up to boot Android; Volume Down to boot Ubuntu. That would be the coolest thing in the history of things. This is what I have been waiting for since 2008. Sooo... STFU.
Prime is dead
Mine truly is----at ASUS RMA facility for the third time since purchase
first 2 times wif-bluetooth issue in shop for 1.5 months
this time green camera
Truly a 500$ 650 if you count the dock peice of c***
There are very few primes around in my country so i don't care if its dead, i have a special device and its working perfectly.
But i think my next tablet (i hope the prime works for a long time) will be one with a digitizer for pens. Like the galaxy note 10.1. In my situation i prefer that over a keyboard.
Long live the prime.
I've had mine since day one. Never had reason to complain about it at all. Two friends have bought them after seeing mine. Still use it every day. I wish I had two.

I really like mine it replaced my laptop ... i also like the build quality. Samsung plastics are not my kind of thing. Drawbacks are wifi performance and the system to connect tablet and keyboard could use some rethinking.

I think that the Development is very slow mostly because around a 50% of users have their Bootloader locked, so lots of people couldn't use other roms, kernels or mods (and of course if a user wants to start a develop and has it's Prime locked, simply he can't).
I bought the tf201 a month ago because I didn't know anything about Bootloader, I thought that I could flash a kernel for OC or something similar. I try to unlock and I couldn't, and now I'm happy with it, because my tf201 died a week ago. When it returns from the RMA, I'll try to sell it. That's all, and this is the last ASUS tablet I'll buy.

I find it interesting as to how much people are influenced by the opinions and experiences of others. In one breath you say you'll never buy another Asus tablet again and in the next you say you've had your Prime for over a year and have had no problems with it.

Let me help you out a little, jordache. I'm quite happy with my Prime. I've not had problems with it. I have several Wireless APs at my home, so it's saturated with signal. As a result, I've not had problems with the wifi. I've chosen not to Root or Unlock my Prime, so I've not had the headaches there that others have had. As the features go (HDMI, Micro-SD, SD, USB, additional battery in keyboard dock), the Prime is top notch. I'd still take it over an iPad any day of the week.
Having said all of that, Asus's post-sale hardware support is terrible. So terrible that I probably won't buy another Asus product. I managed to lose a couple of rubber feet on the dock. When I inquired about getting some replacement feet, Asus wanted me to do an RMA on the dock. I'm not impressed.

The original post in this thread is the equivalent to someone standing up in the middle of a conference on economics and yelling "I LIKE BANANAS".
Sure, they have every right to like bananas, but it isn't helpful, it's attention-seeking and is essentially pointless.
Go eat bananas if you like them. No one cares.

That is correct because my bluetooth sucks, my wireless sucks and should be much better than it is. No other issues besides that. I was just stating a fact that there is not much development for the tablet anymore. That's all I was saying, take it the way you wish but we are all allowed opinions here. thank you
The truth of the matter IMO is that people have come to expect too much. It's the "where's my update" syndrome where people want something new ever other week. Things evolve so fast that yes, a one year old device is practically ancient history. And Asus supported this device for much longer and through many more updates than most other manufacturers do. Take my Motorola Droid 3....please! Seriously my Droid 3 was abandoned by Motorola almost as soon as it was released. My original Droid Came with Android 2.0 then it got 2.1 and 2.2 from Motorola and then 2.3.7 via Cyanogen Mod 7.2 but once on 2.x, always on 2.x. On the other hand on the Prime we went from 3.x to 4.0 to 4.1 and will probably see 4.2 which is really not bad at all. It should also be capable of running future versions of custom ROMs....if the developers keep working on it. But really we have to expect that they will eventually move on too. But these days a year is almost an eternity for a mobile device.

Yes and another no brain response. I was just stating a fact.. don't like tough sh*t. I love my Prime, if I didn't I would have sold it long ago for something better. I was just stating that development has slowed down to a halt.. nothing to do with bananas !. Gezzzz

I don't see it so much as slowing down, more like we have got to the limits of what we can achieve with what we have.
When 4.2 arrives I'm sure you will see some more dev work going on and also there is cyanogenmod which updates nightly if you really want to update regularly.
There is only so much you can do based on the stock rom.

So lets get this straight, you "love" your Prime but you will not be buying another Asus product again. Can you please explain?
