it started cracking (from what i noticed) like, last week
yesterday, it's totally broken off
anyone else have a DIY fix? superglue i'm thinking
****sux because i had the touchpad inside the official case day 1 AND it doesnt get moved around often nor does it see heavy usage
i have a theory that the case actually helps increase the chances of the cracks because any vibration/pressure is transmitted somewhat equally around the touchpad so even if the speaker side was not touched, any other force small or big goes speaker side and will eventually crack
Why don't u contact HP Support? They will replace the case!
I have the same problem that you are having. I have my touchpad for about a week or so and it cracked between both speakers it really sucks. So what I did was used super glue to fix the problem it might not look the best it works for now. Its nice to find out that its just not me having these problems but it really sucks.

ya I know about the customer support replace, just wanted to get opinions on superglue approach before then because I'm sorta scared that my touchpad will get replace with a diff one or the screen gets scratched etc
if the super glue works I'll just do that
Don't do the superglue, I really regret doing it myself, it's not clear and is very ugly, i need to find a way to get it off before i can send it in.
I'm thinking of getting mine repaired and then getting it wrapped in ghost armor.
The armor works great...

I didnt have "Cracks" but I have the ripple effect on the small plastic part like it was going to crack.
wondering about the superglue method myself (i have cracks on both speakers). does it melt the plastic cover?
I have cracks on my TP as well. It's a hardware defect, much like the original Pre / usb door cracks. The plus side is that it will never spread to the screen, and it does not affect the performance (or looks if it's in a case).
I don't recommend sending it back for "repair" ... it's not worth it and you don't know if you'll get it back.
It works.
I just noticed cracks as well. I'm going to check out that ghost armor. Looks neat.

well the cracks around the speakers is cosmetic. Contact HP Support they will replace the casing.
I had the same issue with my TP. The customer support was good. They sent me a return box and label. All you have to do is to pack your TP as per instructions and drop it at nearby UPS store. I received the repaired TP within a week.
Act fast before the warranty expires.
I just noticed a crack in mine. Called them and they are sending a box out. It's covered for a year they said.
10 have it back. I'm sad but will be happy to get new one and will have armor case ready and waiting for it.

Yea. HP is going to get my tablet back in a few days. I have to go drop it off. I wonder if they've fixed the problem and the new ones don't do it. I sure hope so.
I have dropped mine and its cracked on the corner and some of the plastic has come away. Does anyone know if replacement covers are available while searching about this? Cant seem to find one.
My TP has now developed a crack near the speakers! Spoke to HP who said there was a batch of TP`s who had a "bad" batch of plastic and the new plastic they use is better and should not crack!!
I have to send photo`s of the crack to their Argentinian office and then the TP gets sent from the UK to Hungary for repair (through UPS)
Hungary?? I think that is the first time I have read the word "Hungary" anywhere in months (do not spend a lot of time looking at maps of Eastern Europe).

OK about 6 months ago my I dopped my phone, cracked the touch glass, so I ordered a new white case and glass (they were never sold here by telstra in white). So the day I get my phone back I go down to a house I am renovating after work to do some more renovations. about midnite some low life sneeks in the back door and steals my phone off the counter while I was at the other end of the house.
Well today a friend brought a white phone into my work to have repaired- and what do you know its my phone (I still have the box with imei number under my desk).
Upon opening battery cover I see this - can anyone tell me what has been ripped out from the top left and if it can be replaced / fixed (the phone boots but I need to flash it before I can put a sim card in it):

So can anyone tell me what is missing and if I can fix it / buy a replacement?
it is only a cover ( for speaker )
if your hw speaker is working its not a big deal just cover it up with the back case.
yeah theres nothing missin
i took that black cover off mine a while back and theres nothing there
but dont u think its weird that there is nothing under it?
why cover up something that isnt even there? i am thinking that SE planned to put something in there, but didnt in the end... just my opinion
nah seems to me its like a service panel like its a space to get to the motherboard easier
I guess its the compass try they maps and if the comapass works because its cover is removed
Cheers

Wow man talk about luck!
Hope everything works again.. are you planning on giving it back
So I'm curious what happened to this situation with the "friend" who brought the phone in. Did he confess he stole it from you, whether or not he knew it was yours, or did you confront him? Or did he bring it in for someone else maybe? I know I would be pissed at someone, especially a friend, if they stole my phone. Not to mention that you just fixed the damn thing. How long did he have it? I would be grilling that thief. "Why did you take my phone?" "Why the F#[email protected] is the cover off the back inside, your obviously not a phone technician or you wouldn't be bringing it in?!" "What kind of person steals someones phone?" and the final thing to say, "Come by my house later, I have a surprise for you."
its the speaker, Mini also have this mesh thing, it is used to cover the diaphragm of the speaker. it also in line with the speaker outlet. but on your unit only the mesh was gone.
this diaphragm protect it from dirt build up. So without this it will still work but have a possibility to have dirt buildup.
So for the second time i dropped phone on the concrete portion of the road while getting out of the cab. I think it's time for me to invest in a bumper to prevent this from happening again
Before we move forward, is there any way i can get the casing replaced?
I was initially waiting for the 32GB version to pop up and sell mine for cheap but the last drop put a nice dent on the bottom right corner
Good news: Galaxy Tab 10.1 takes decent quick photos

That was my intention from the beginning to replace it with a 32GB version but 32GB version never came out. I may grind it out a little longer for the nexus prime assuming it does come with an AMOLED HD screen.
ah yeah.. my Dell Streak from back in the day (RIP, officially discontinued) came with a 16GB card.. so I use that.. I used to use my SGS II for media but I find the headset volume to be too low so I went back to using my Zune HD

that is an exspensive fix mate , the only way i could find to replace the silver bezel is to buy the screen with the bezel attached wich is about £80
you then have to fit the new screen etc
it was cheaper to sell my scratched sgs2 and buy a new one
i sold mine for £385 and got a new one for £445
Kicked out your girlfriend over an accidentally dropped phone? Youch.
Just get a nice cheap case to hide the damage until you sell and buy a new phone.
You'll feel better
Might wanna consider investing on case-mate tough case series.
Also dented the "silver" in a few places, and much to my own amazement I'm not too bothered! But will be buying a the thinnest blackest bumper I can find for future drops.

Now that's what I'm talking about!
I have the official samsung on mine, the mesh type but it doesn't protect the top or bottom.
IV had several very lucky breaks so far because The phone is so thin and light IV been able to catch it between two fingers when almost dropping it on several occasions.
I only just noticed the metallic black bezel after reading this thread so it worries me a little more now that its not protected all the way around.

Hi guys. My Atrix was walking fine until today in class, I suddenly feel something going off the power button, when I check, a sort of black tape from the fingerprint scanner is peeling off. I'm not really sure what to do about this. I can't claim warranty since its a Korean Atrix, bought in Vietnam and using in Australia
What should I do with this ? peel it off and get a DIY fix or any other option ?

as in 2 sided tape ? if its normal clear tape then how can the scanner works then lol
Whatever you do do not peel it off you will ruin your scanner. This is what I did to fix mine. I took some of my girlfriend's fake nail glue and put a tiny drop of it in the tip of a pair of pointed scissors and put a tiny dab under the corner of the tape. Hold the tape down for about a minute till the glue dries. Don't use too much or it will lock up the button. Works like a charm.
Out of curiosity how long did it take for this situation to develop for you?
Mine was like It when I got it. Not from att tho. From a trade. I think the phone was only about a month old
My is around 2 month old. Thanks for the tip, will try it out

Just curious, to those of you having this problem...do you store your phone in your pocket?
I have my Atrix in the otterbox defender with a belt clip, haven't seen this. I'm wondering if it is getting caught on something in your pockets?
Had this phone since the release date and do not have this problem.

I wonder if there is a replacement part available to be ordered online.
Got mine release day in US. Scanner was initially perfectly level but over time it became slanted. No issue with the tape peeling off though.
Slow down guys, the "slant" is quite common - and there's an old thread about that around here too.
The sticker peeling part of it, is uncommon... (and hopefully it stays that way)

I remember that when the Atrix was first released, people were pooping kittens over the slanted button (here and in the Moto forums) until they realized pretty much everybody had the same issue.
If you look in this picture you can see where the cable is connected which in turn "holds" that end of the button down giving the appearance that it's "crooked" (source: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/2 )

Me too, although I run out of superglue, so I ended up using two part epoxy glue, painted it with a black permanent marker. Now there is a slight bulge where the glue sits, but such things don't bother me.. And it feels strong and stiff now, unlike the other side speaker cover where it flexes, will wait for it to crack and use the same procedure too
V
I would return it if HP didn't reset my touchpad.
Or even turn it on, for that matter.
I used superglue and it burnt the plastic, and 2 weeks later the crack started moving again.
Will they replace the whole back cover or just glue it back?

I would imagine if I send this in, they'd just replace it with some refurbished unit (so about the question of CM9 being installed, I'm sure you'll get something back with stock webOS). And I'm a bit worried I might get something with a screen defect or something else considering they don't make the units anymore and probably don't have much left, I'd think all the good stuff has probably been sold by now.
Hmmm... I only paid $150. I might just live with it and hope it doesn't spread.
Oh dang. I just found a second crack from my speaker to bezel. Ugh, this damn this is come part suddenly. Haha, geez. Guess I got what I paid for.

I've had 2 32gbs that both developed speaker cracks. It's a defect that will likely appear again in any refurbished units that get sent back from a repair. I have a nice carbon skin on my touchpad which seems to keep the cracks at bay. If they get worse ill use some good epoxy.

you will need to use ACMUinstaller to take Android completely off (this takes a few minutes). Then run in WebOs, run a complete clean and uninstall (this takes a bit over an hour).
Time from repair to back in your hands
Well, today I found out the 7 - 10 business days begins they day they RECEIVE your TP in the repair center.
This really sucks. All three reps, including a supervisor, expressed it was a turn around time of 7 - 10 days from the date you send your TP in...I am quite upset. I told them I use my device for work. Had I known this to be the truth, I would have waited to send mine in.
Can anyone verify that after sending in your TP, you get the SAME TP back? Like an above posted stated, I really don't want to risk getting a refurb with broken screen etc.
Btw I've got cracks EVERYWHERE; USB port/headphone jack/both speakers. Ugh.
I'd even replace the backing myself if I knew where to get one.
Well, mine is supposedly on its way back to me. I rec'd an email Friday late morning that it is being shipped back to me. I chatted with tech support and was told that mine was repaired. You just have to let them know you want yours returned to you. I even included a note!
I should be getting it Monday morning and I will confirm if it is mine and that the repair was actually done.
oh and UPS does not have much information on their website, but if you call, they have the shipping info.
I have the same problem. Is it OK to send it back with Android installed or do we have to remove it?

Yes, you need to remove Android with ACMEUinstaller.
When you call, specify you want your original unit repaired and sent back to you. I also left a note inside the box.

I will chime in too...mine is solid.
Well this one got me out of being a lurker on this site - I have the exact same problem in the same location and it is driving me nuts. I have visibly inspected the connectors and they all appear to be the same. Still within my return window at VZW but I hope they can just give me a new cover vs. dealing with a new phone.
I also have this issue. I have the white GS3 from AT&T. I kind of feel that I may end up with a bigger problem if I exchange for another. It's incredibly annoying considering the money I dropped on this thing, but I figure a case will cover it up, and my fingers rarely ever hang out in that area anyway.

i would suggest taking it to your retailer and ask them to replace it. unfortunately, i doubt they will go through the trouble of doing that for you. you could try ordering a new back cover. they are a bit pricey though.
Try detaching that side of the cover and snapping it on clip by clip. I had a slight creak, but this fixed it.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I've tried putting it back on every way possible, no luck. I also tried the hair dryer method from the SII and do not recommend it - the clear coating on the back started to crack around the headphone jack. I was working very carefully so it's hardly noticeable but had I been pushing harder it could have cracked a lot. It's possible that I needed to heat it more but I'm afraid to since it's already pretty dang flimsy.
I'm going to go to VZW today and we'll see what they say. I really hope they act on it, a flagship $300 device should not have creaky plastic on the back...
In my case, I can actually see that the back cover does not fit properly. Regardless of how I put the cover back on, that edge is slightly raised from the phone, which is what causes the creaking. The creaking doesn't exist on the phone itself without the back cover on.
I brought my phone in and they are 3+ weeks backordered so they suggested I try Sammy - I played with the phone again and realized the creak is actually coming from the phone case itself, and NOT the back cover.
OP try taking off your cover and pushing along the thin strip of plastic on the side of the battery, this is at least where my creak is. I tried tightening the screws but no help, this just got even more frustrating.
