Got my transformer, two small bright spots on the screen - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Two small pinpoints of white light on the screen. Are these dead pixels? Stuck Pixels?
I'm guessing that either way I should exchange it. So, apparently Asus is going to be having quality issues?

Guess this bad boy is going back...

I got a replacement Prime yesterday and thought everything was perfect until I opened my web browser to google, which is pretty much all white and noticed a bright spot like you are describing in the title. Mine are definitely NOT stuck/dead pixels. I know because I returned my first one in part because of stuck pixels. It's almost like these pixel(s) allow slightly more light through than the adjacent pixels. Sort of like light bleed but not at the edge of the screen. I can only see it on white or very, very light backgrounds. It disappears entirely on darker colors.
It is unfortunate but I will not replace this again for a third time. It goes away unless my Prime is charging or docked (which I assume is because it is similar to the tablet being plugged in) and can only be seen on an all white background. I will never use my tablet plugged in, I charge it at night when I sleep, and the limited amount I have it docked is not an issue since it only shows up on an all white background and seems less noticeable than a dead/stuck pixel. Honestly, a smudged screen is more noticeable/annoying. Since I don't use my dock much it will probably end up having a dead battery anyway which means I really wouldn't see it much, unless the battery in the dock is required for it to function while attached, I'm not sure but will find out. Thinking about it I guess it probably does need to be charged for the ports and everything to work unless it leaches off the tablet. Who knows...I'll test it at some point.
It is kind of strange though and I really dislike trying to justify a flaw to keep a $500 device but whatever. IPS screens have some nice benefits but they seem to have a lot of flaws too like bright spots, pretty bad light bleed and more stuck pixels than I am used too. I went back and forth in my OCD head so many times about how many times I would exchange or return this device before I get one that is pristine but if I return it there is nothing else that interests me.
Asus had quality issues with their past Transformer and to think the 1080p tablet will be any different is ignorant.
Anyway, end blog. Since that's what XDA is now

If it's only 2 pixels and they are not directly adjacent, it's unlikely that they will take it back as that is deemed an acceptable tolerance for dead/stuck pixels. I think you need to have 5 or more total or 2 directly adjacent.
Pretty much all manufacturers use this guideline I believe. I hope I am wrong and you do get to exchange it.

I had one dead pixel on my Xoom and Best Buy replaced it without even turning it on to verify

I had two stuck pixels when I first got my Prime. Running pixel fixer apps didn't fix the problem. However, both of them have "unstuck" themselves after a few days of use. If you have some time before you have to return it, you may want to wait a little.
EDIT: Check that. I just ran a dead pixel test and only one of the two unstuck itself. The other one is so unnoticeable to me that I haven't seen it.

Same issue here, bottom right of the screen, small patch of white light in the browser window about an inch from the corner..
Not sure whether to return, the rest of the tablet is awesome!!

I just got another one and about 7 dead pixels the kind you can see on
Black screens and also slightly a bit of light bleed where the headphone jack is

So far I have returned 2 primes because of bad screen bleeding and every time it is getting worse. MUCH WORSE.

Welcome to the club. I returned 3. I don't care so much about screen bleed though, especially on the boot screen where it is most noticeable. I had stuck pixels and other weird issues.
I had two Primes with screen defects. I returned both and finally gave up on the TF201. I like the tablet overall; but lets get honest - someone over there in Taiwan is sleeping on the job when it comes to quality control. They need to be fired. It's absolutely unacceptable in this day and age for the same people to receive multiple defective units. Any my screen defects were not minor - they were pretty glaring.
Screen bleed is not even noticeable in everdsy use or during regular functions. it's only during bootup. if its minor, then that's normal. if its major bleeding, then exchange once again.
1st return due to dead pixels
2nd returning tomorrow due to 3 light bleeds

all my apps have a bowl or dark background. And i mainly use it at night. So it is considered regular use for me. But this light bleeding is so bad you can see is in bright light on low brightness. I should if kept my first one. At least I could sort of tolerate it

Same here:
1 returned for lots of stuck pixels and backlight bleed
2 even more stuck pixels, less bleed
3 almost no stuck pixels (still some though) but the worse in backlight bleed and had a creaking screen
Tomorrow I will get my 4th unit, but I don't get my hopes to high up
* I know IPS screens cannot be without some light bleeding completely, but my specimens all had these nasty large "bulbs" which can even been seen on lighter backgrounds.
Returned my second prime today. Light bleed and off center screen. Bestbuy had one other there.but it was onhold!! Grr.. Want my tablet back.

Looking at your pic, i really didnt notice much diffference from my boot up either..
Some people are incredibly fussy, and ruin it for everyone else.
youre going to get the most perfect non-bleeding TF201 soon, then drop it on the pavement...
Then start complaining about the quality of build...

Yes it looks like the boot screen is set to 100%. Mine looks very poor too. Once passed the boot screen no complaints
I've had screen bleed on two Primes that was noticeable on ANY dark background and detracted from the enjoyment of using the device. I also had one where the light bleed was not noticeable on any (normal) screen, and I would have kept that one had it not had other problems (non-functional haptic feedback, a rattle near one of the dock connectors that got worse over time).
My wife's Galaxy Tab 10.1 has zero light bleed. My original Transformer had tons of light bleed that was only visible when booting; I never noticed it otherwise during 8 months of use.
Light bleed is something that I think it highly subjective as to whether or not it's a problem. Nobody can say one way or another whether it's a problem for a given person and/or with a given device. Returning a device because it has an issue like this, therefore, is entirely appropriate and it's ridiculous to assert otherwise. Keeping a device with light bleed can also be entirely appropriate.
People have different standards for their devices. And nobody should feel like returning a device somehow deprives another consumer. It's up to the company to make enough of something, not for every potential purchaser to bite the bullet so some stranger can move up in the line.
If you are looking for perfection in something, I think you'll be highly disappointed.

I completely disagree. If you spend your hard earned money on something it should be free from defects. I havent complained about the gps at all. I personally do not care. The people that do care however I leave alone because gps is stated on the box. It doesnt say sometimes working gps it says gps. As for screen bleed and dead pixels....are you kidding me?? Do I agree with the hundreds of threads on the issues? No. But I do believe your product should work as advertised. Guess what, Asus isnt doing charity work here. Ever heard of cost of doing business? I run a 3 million dollar a year high end tile and stone store and i replace material for what sometimes seems like nothing to me but then I remeber..oh yeah these people that are spending 4-6k on their bathrooms are WRITING my paycheck....If something has a minor chip or scratch..guess what? Its replaced. No questions asked. This is the reason my company has gone from 24 stores to 62 store in the last 5 years. Im not talking 800sf gamestops either.. im talking 25000sf 3+ million to open showrooms. So if you are a manufacture like us sometimes you need to SUCK IT UP and do the right thing. No matter how insignificant it may seem to you these people work hard for their money just like I do. If Asus was non profit maybe I would feel different but they arent. They are in it to win it and are competing with the big boys in town and need to get their act together!!!!

Good for posting this, it will let others know just how bad it really is.
My first prime from Gamestop has screen bleed and horrible performance, i sold it and got another from Office Depot which so far has been perfect (besides the gps,wifi and bluetooth defects we all have).
I was going to try and sell my second prime and be done with Asus all together but nobody around here will buy it lol, so I decided to just hang on to it.
A device like this should come with no defects, and you shouldn't be expected to lay down and just take it in the rear.

LCD "Mura" Defect (aka, clouding, hot spot, white spot)

My Prime has developed a small bright spot in the center of the screen. It's only visible on white or light pages. I didn't drop the tablet or anything, it just appeared. Anyone else experience this?
EDIT: Here's a link showing a laptop with similar looking spots. The one on my Prime is much smaller than any of these, but it's a similar looking mark. I tried getting a picture of mine, but had trouble doing so.

I have 4 of those spots.. three are within one inch and one of them is at least 3 pixels. I also have poor wifi, so I want to kill two birds with one stone. as soon Asus has a fix for the wifi I will rma..
I have the exact same "brighter" spot at lower center of the screen, don't remember it being there when I first got it... it's very annoying, I think I will send it back for repair.
My friend's first prime had that on his screen (2 white dots) when he bought it only visible on a white screen. He returned it for a new one. Thats why its important to check for those too when you first get your prime and put it through inspection, Just open up the notepad like app, that one has a white screen.

Read somewhere that those are stuck pixels. There's an app in the market that's suppose to fix stuck pixels as well.

I'm 100% certain the spot wasn't there when I first got the tablet, as I did a very close inspection of it. Actually, I was reading through a thread in an iPad forum and there were reports of spots like this showing up on some iPads after a while.

Thanks, but this is different than a stuck pixel, which I also have (I found the stuck pixel when I first got the tablet, but it's so unnoticeable 99% of the time that it doesn't bother me). The link below shows similar looking bright spots on a laptop (the spot I have is much smaller than any of these, but it's the same type of spot).

same story here. my prime has 5 bright spots (hot pixel) as well. i did not notice them when i got prime last year. pixel fixer can't fix these either. i can live with these spots though.

I have the same problem, 1 bright pixel just below the home screen indicator.
It doesnt bother me that much, its the only problem i have with my prime and knowing theres lots of people with more problems im not gonna return it for a new one, having the chance to get one worse than i had...
My phone had the same thing when I first received it (still does), but it was my understanding it was a "hot spot" created by adhesive or undue pressure in manufacturing. It's not stuck/dead pixels, in my case at least, and my Prime has no such spots.
I however don't know what would cause something like this over time. Seems to me something in the screen is poorly manufactured and overheating...
Sent mine back and was told by Asus that the white spot is a kind of light bleed that caused by pressure at the area, they will replace the panel for me.
I've noticed that mine has a few white spots similar to who you guys are describing. Mine has two about an inch apart from each other near the lower left-middle of the screen, and another near the right hand side of the screen. I don't notice it when other colours are present, but on a white/light surface, it can get very annoying. I'm thinking I might call ASUS and see if I can get it RMA'd since it has other problems as well. The WiFI is actually pretty ok, but GPS is a total bust. I don't really care about the GPS that much, but it might be what I need to send this in. I'm just worried the white spots will get worse with time.
After reading up on this a little more, the name for the white spots we're talking about is "mura" (google "LCD mura" and you'll get some hits). It looks like it's somewhat common on cheaper displays.
Also have this appearing on mine and also didn't have it before.
I have only noticed it in the last week since I installed the latest update.
I only really notice it on the XDA site.
In my case it's definitely not mura (clouding), but more like pressure spots or pinpoints (usually 2-3 pixels in size.) They are more distinctive in shape than clouding. Either way, sucks for any of us to get these kind of issues. I've actually got an RMA # for mine and will be sending it out either tonight or tomorrow whenever I get a chance.

i can tell you another one..... so i was working very hard on many several things on my tfp.... sending emails, writing proposals, getting images, working on ideas ect.
I started to get annoyed on how fast the tfp goes to sleep, so i decided to put it to Never. So it never went to sleep and it was awesome because my concentration kept going and i was jumping from my laptop to my tfp back to my laptop ect.
THEN.... i decided to go to sleep and i left my tfp opened connected while it was charging. I completely FORGOT that i had disabled tfp from sleeping. So it sat on the Home screen of my launcher.
When i woke up several hours later, i started to use my tfp and i noticed there was a white area that on every screen it was still there.
It was the outline of the icons! This is the reason why screensavers we're created so this wouldnt happen. This is an excerpt from our trusty wikipedia: (btw, apparently this isnt suppose to happen in lcd's but i assure you it happened to me on my tfp, its not that bad though, as i barely see it sometimes)

So, let me ask you this OP, did you by any chance leave your tfp on for a long time with something on the screen? and the glow that you have now resembles that image/icon/object you had on the tfp?

Nope. I can say with 100% confidence that I didn't leave anything displayed on the screen that could have caused this. The spot is very small, and is just a little random blotch that doesn't resemble any type of image/icon/object. I've tried taking a picture of it with the camera on my smartphone, but I get those vertical bars that you get when taking a picture of a computer monitor and it's hard to make anything out in the picture as a result. Would using a regular camera allow me to get a good picture? If so, I'll see if I can borrow one and post a pic.
Also, the spot wasn't there when I first got my Prime, and it appeared after about a month.
As of now, I've decided against RMAing it, as (1) I'm afraid of getting back another unit with one of the other myriad of TFP problems, and (2) I don't feel like being without my Prime for 4-6 weeks.

Add 1 to the of people with the pinpoint brightness issue, mine showed up after about a month of use.
I am also waiting to RMA or exchange at BestBuy once he seem to have all of the issues worked out since I have one of the relatively good ones now and don't want a broken one.
dead or stuck pixel
i have almost a half inch bar worth of dead or stuck pixels with more grey tint cloudy looking smugges..on the top portion of my screen..i can only see this when the screen has grey or anything in the grey family. i have not dropped, got it wet, or anythin to it..its been working great for me until about 4 days ago. how and what do i do about getting a rma. i have emailed asus but stilll not heard back..its realy starting to piss me off..this is going to be my 3 one..the other two i was still in my return time at best buy and game stop..this one i am not..any help will be great..would post pics but when i take the pics its hard to see or tell what i am talking about..

what to check on the Nexus 10 to ensure it's perfect

Hey guys, as we know, the very first batch of any device likely will have some flaws. Hopefully this won't happen to the nexus 10. Anyway, Im a very picky consumer so I have to ensure my device is perfect. So I will list some of the things we need to check when the item arrives. feel free to give tips etc..
1/ Check the screen to see there are any dead pixels/ discolored area/ uneven white screen/ yellow or pink spots
2/ Light bleed
3/ any scratch on the body
4/Buttons are all good.
5/ Speakers
All I can think of so far..
also would want to check if the cameras, radios, ports, battery and other such components work properly, along with checking along the seams of the tablet to make sure it is solidly put together.
Microscope... check EVERY pixel.
I also have a few questions. It has to deal with the snap on cover if anyone got those (if they are out). When you unfold the cover does the screen light up like the iPad does with its smart cover. And also can the cover be used as a stand or does it just fall over? And how bad is the lag on Chrome compared to anyone who has used Safari on an iPad. Thanks. I'm hoping to switch from my ipad to the nexus 10!

Well in my case they'd be replacing the screen whether they intended to or not. If I had to, I'd just order a new one, then send the old one back in its place and say I changed my mind. And that just if they didn't want to exchange a clearly defective product. Up to them, but either way I'm going to make it right for myself in the end :good:
With 2560x1600 x3 sub-pixels (=12.288.000 pixels) you will very likely not get a sample without a single defective sub-pixel. Doesn't really matter either, a stuck sub-pixel at 300 DPI resolution is so small that it will be hard to find even if you "know" where it is.
My tab 10.1 and GS3 first batch were flawless. I expect a pretty close to perfect initial batch here as well. This isn't Asus or HTC.

Hint: Try counting the sub-pixels on the Galaxy 10.1 or S3 and compare to the N10.

One thing concerns me the most is the screen. It's true that it's hard to get a screen without any dead pixels considering the huge amount of pixels. well, I really hope this won't happen since if I ever find out just one single dead pixel, it would turn me off really bad even if I normally can't see it. I forgot to include the legendary GS2 as another first batch flawless device. It might be about luck sometimes but generally you can deduce when it is safe to buy a first batch.
I use two methods that I feel pretty good about.
One, like I said, my GS2, tab 10.1, and GS3 were all flawless first batches for me. I realize that using just myself as a sample size is pretty shady statistically but if you look at the posts of complaints of the GS3 in May/June, they are far less than most devices.
Two, we know for a fact that Samsung is not only a manufacturer, but one of the if not the best manufacturer. Sure HTC and Apple are moving away from them, but it is not because of the quality. People trust their factories and manufacturing processes so unless the Nexus 10 uses some fancy new manufacturing process, Samsung already has the wisdom and experience and chances are, they won't need to make many changes to the manufacturing process like others might.

I'm not so sure we should expect the majority of units to have dead pixels. I deal a lot with high resolution 2560x1600 computer monitors and very rarely do I encounter dead/stuck pixels. You're right that they would be harder to notice because of the high pixel density, but I'll use pixel checker and send it back if there's an issue. Just because it's a smaller screen doesn't mathematically necessitate pixel issues. The 13in retina macbook pro has almost the same pixel density and of the few I've tested, none have any pixel issues.

Are you really spending maybe 15-30 minutes (if that's enough) to check each display in a dark room with dark-adapted eyes?
I'm asking that because as an example my Nexus 7 has 1 stuck blue sub-pixel almost smack in the middle of the screen, I know where it is and I still need about 10-20 seconds in a dark room with a (mostly) black screen to find it again - in daylight it's just plainly impossible to locate it. On a Retina/N10/WQXGA display this will be even harder.
It's my personal opinion that a lot of the people posting here how their displays are perfect with zero errors just never see any of their stuck/dark sub-pixels. They're really that hard to find unless you have bad luck and get a completely broken pixel or a cluster of broken sub-pixels in close proximity.

I'm asking that because as an example my Nexus 7 has 1 stuck blue sub-pixel almost smack in the middle of the screen, I know where it is and I still need about 10-20 seconds in a dark room with a (mostly) black screen to find it again - in daylight it's just plainly impossible to locate it. On a Retina/N10/WQXGA display this will be even harder.
It's my personal opinion that a lot of the people posting here how their displays are perfect with zero errors just never see any of their stuck/dark sub-pixels. They're really that hard to find unless you have bad luck and get a completely broken pixel or a cluster of broken sub-pixels in close proximity.

first thing I do is go to my closet and turn the brightness all the way up... lol I can not live with dead pixels..

My personal view on sub-pixel errors is: if I have to search for them to see them ... I don't really care about them.
A full stuck/dark pixel (or anything that catches the eye) is a reason to send the device back though, no doubt about that.

I thought I was a bit wierd doing this to test for Light Bleed! lol I feel slightly better now!

I tend to do that anyway for light bleed... That's my worry. My Nexus 7 has pretty bad light bleed, and i'm okay with that because it's a cheap tablet, but I won't be happy if the Nexus 10 has bleed like that one. I can deal with a minor amount around the edges, but it's really annoying if it extends to the center of the screen, etc.

Not really true. My monitor is 2560x1440 and I promise you, there are no dead pixels. Granted it's 27", and the Nexus is only 10", it may be a little harder to see, but throw up solid color backgrounds and you will probably see it.

Severity of lightbleed

On the seperate one tick whether or not you have it. Personally I can spot mine in normal usage at some auto brightness levels. I know that a lot of this will fall under personal opinion, but I would like to hear what people think.
This thread is pretty pointless. The severity is going to be everyone's opinion. There is no set way to measure it without comparing all the devices. And taking pictures of the device is a bad way to measure it because light bleed is amplified horrendously on a camera. Personally, I don't think the light bleed on my N10 is bad at ALL, possibly because I'm somewhat used to it due to my monitor having it.

Perhaps, but I would like to see how bad people think their light bleed is. Personally I have compared it to several other of my devices (galaxy tab 2 7.0, ipad 2, galaxy player 5.0) and none of them have it this bad.
If I stare at the bottom right corner, on a completely black screen, with max brightness, I can notice slight bleed. Looking at the same corner under any other conditions and I can't make out any bleed lol.

Idk, this makes we want to send mine back and try for another, but I don't want to do that and get a worse one back. I can see mine at 100 percent brightness and if I stare at it I can pretty easily see it under normal conditions. My friend couldn't see it for like 20 minutes though, so maybe I am just crazy. With that said he can spot it pretty easily now.

If it's going to be a concern in the long run, I might suggest just returning it.
Currently, I have a multi-touch issue with my screen that doesn't seem to like when I use more then 3 fingers at random times. Although the chances of me using more then 3 fingers is... extremely rare; it does sort of bother me a bit lol. But then again, aside from that, and the very minor bleed I have, everything else seems fine... hmm

Ha ha, almost seems like a best of the worst sort of thing. If it doesn't have one issue it has another. Also the cable they sent me doesn't charge the tablet, I have to use the one that came with my sgs3.
Good to see that the majority has none. Just ordered a new unit. We shall see how this turns out.
My option is not there. Only visible on the start up screen and only when the auto brightness adjusts. They could probably just fix mine by disabling auto brightness on boot up and there would be no way I can see it. Lol

I'm not sure if mine really counts as light bleed. Since playing with it for a couple of hours I've only noticed two small spots on the very bottom about the width of my small finger. I need to have brightness set to about 60% and a completely dark background to really see it. During normal use with auto brightness on I don't notice it. Is it really possible to get zero light spots in all conditions with these screens?

That's still light bleed, but I can see mine all the time. It sounds minor.
So far not so good. 14 people don't have light bleed and 15 people do.
I ordered mine 5 minutes after they went on sale. No light bleed.
Well I called for an RMA. Before the csr put it through, I got assurance that should the replacement have worse problems that I could RMA the replacement and keep the original. My problem is a little annoying but I have no desire to go through 6 or more replacements to find that perfect device. Other than the dim strip this thing is flawless so I'd rather not risk warped backs, reboots, or a worse panel. Here's to hoping the one replacement is defect free.

Call Google and speak to TECH SUPPORT AND NOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT!
I complained about light bleed in my first one, and later came to find out that the idiot in CS put down that I was returning it due to remorse, which means I'd have to pay the restocking fee. Tech will put your return reason as defective or DOA so you don't get charged the fee.
No light bleed on mine. I was surprised since my last two Android tablets (transformer and toshiba excite 10) both had some light bleed noticeable on the black boot screen.

How is the replacement? Should your return the product for exchange or google you refer another product? and then send the product deffect .

Worth bearing in mind that the numbers are skewed somewhat toward people who are concerned about this topic, with a good chance that they have a light bleed problem -- these are generally the folks who will open this thread and vote in the poll. If you could be confident that all XDA readers in the N10 forum would vote, the percentage would be scarier. Not sure how meaningful the stats will really be that are collected in this thread.

Screen Defect, What Can it Be?

Hey everyone, so I bought a Droid DNA about a week ago. The unit is near perfect; no SIM card issues, audio issues, overheating issues, battery issues, etc. Using it for about 2 days in, however, I discovered a minor imperfection. Specifically, the center of the screen seems to have something of a bright white pixel that is visible on a white or light-colored background only, more so at a specific angle and in a darker setting and looking at it very close. Most of the times, it is virtually unnoticeable, unless you know where to look for it. Now, it doesn't bother me that much in day-to-day usage, and I honestly don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a new phone, whether exchanging in-store or through a Certified Like New Replacement. This is strange, though. I don't think it's a dead pixel, as it is not black. I don't think that it's a stuck pixel either, because it's only viewable on a white back background, and if it was a stuck white pixel, should be viewable on a black background as well (which it is not). I'm attaching some macro shots I made with my DSLR. Any ideas?

Figured as much Still, I'd like to know exactly what it is. I don't think it's a stuck or dead pixel, it doesn't behave like either. I don't think it's dust, as I've had that on an iPad once and it was darker and looked different.... it just seems like a cluster of overly bright pixels in that area, or perhaps a back light problem.

I noticed the same thing (slightly different spot), and have been debating sending it in. I don't really want to have to go back to my thunderbolt now though. Did you end up sending it in? If so, how long did it take?

I ended up not sending it in. I think its not that big of an issue. Worst case, I'll request a replacement towards the end of my one year warranty, so that I can have a relatively new phone for the remainder of my contract. Backing up everything and setting up a new phone would just be too tedious. Again, I don't think its a big issue.
