Hey everyone, so I bought a Droid DNA about a week ago. The unit is near perfect; no SIM card issues, audio issues, overheating issues, battery issues, etc. Using it for about 2 days in, however, I discovered a minor imperfection. Specifically, the center of the screen seems to have something of a bright white pixel that is visible on a white or light-colored background only, more so at a specific angle and in a darker setting and looking at it very close. Most of the times, it is virtually unnoticeable, unless you know where to look for it. Now, it doesn't bother me that much in day-to-day usage, and I honestly don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a new phone, whether exchanging in-store or through a Certified Like New Replacement. This is strange, though. I don't think it's a dead pixel, as it is not black. I don't think that it's a stuck pixel either, because it's only viewable on a white back background, and if it was a stuck white pixel, should be viewable on a black background as well (which it is not). I'm attaching some macro shots I made with my DSLR. Any ideas?
Definitely a hardware issue, you should go for replacement

Figured as much Still, I'd like to know exactly what it is. I don't think it's a stuck or dead pixel, it doesn't behave like either. I don't think it's dust, as I've had that on an iPad once and it was darker and looked different.... it just seems like a cluster of overly bright pixels in that area, or perhaps a back light problem.
I have that too!
I noticed the same thing (slightly different spot), and have been debating sending it in. I don't really want to have to go back to my thunderbolt now though. Did you end up sending it in? If so, how long did it take?

I ended up not sending it in. I think its not that big of an issue. Worst case, I'll request a replacement towards the end of my one year warranty, so that I can have a relatively new phone for the remainder of my contract. Backing up everything and setting up a new phone would just be too tedious. Again, I don't think its a big issue.

I have the XV6800 and noticed that this phone over times developes some screen spots. I have one so far, and on my previous one that I returned (for other reasons) developed one also.
I read a thread on another website that Moguls / Titans develop it too.
Has any one else Developed this? If so is it fixable or is it something that might cause like sometype of recall and issue a fix where we might get phone replacements later on?
i have a light spot about the size a pea in the screens lower left-hand quadrant. It's noticeable it during the verizon boot-up screen with the white background, in word, etc. anything with a white background. Not noticeable if the screen is colored.
I've wondered if this was normal.
mine's got 3 of them now
same here, my burnin spot is also in the lower left-hand corner the size of a pea.
same here, lower left corner is lighter than the rest of the screen...looks like somebody missed something on QA

Yes, mine is in the exact same place. I read on another website that it might be an HTC issue because other TITAN's have gotten these spots also.
At first I thought that a picture image was burnt into my screen or that I might have pressed the screen to heavily and damaged it.
This has happened twice. I wonder if there is a fix because this is very annoying especialy when trying to read or watching a video.

I am afraid to take mine in since my all High and mighty Moister sticker now says void even though my phone hasn't been with in 100 feet of water. I find those stickers to be such BS...but that could just be me...I wish I could find some where to buy spare ones..

I am not entirely certain but I think the void sticker that is displayed by the battery is for the screw. I mean if you try to unscrew your phone to fiddle with the insides then that voids your warranty. I could be wrong.
The only concern would be that if we where to return the phone to get a replacement one, that we would have to flash our RADIOS and ROMS to stock if any one has flashed them to anything that is not stock.
The stickers on both of my alltel 6800's said void out of the box. Their explaination for this is the when the sticker get wet the words bleed and turn the entire sticker purple. Not sure how accurate the rep was but that is the story for what it is worth.

Yep..you are right . The void stickers are good until they turn a solid purple or red...weeehhh...I'm goin to go and replace my phone this week will let you know how it goes..and what they say
Yeah, mine's got a spot the size of a small pea in the bottom left-hand corner. Doesn't bother me too much yet though, I've got the insurance so I'll go get it replaced one of these days. For others that have tried to get them replaced, any troubles?
After doing some research on forums I noticed that many people have this problem.
Some say that it might be an issue with the phone heating up, faulty LCD manufacturing, the excess use of the vibration feature and so on......
But It seems that no matter what you ( such as gettting a replacement) your current or new phone might still get these spots.
It seems that not many carriers know about this issue, not even HTC.
So the problem might consist unless it is made known to them so they can create a fix for the new shipment of phones. Or else this will reoccur on the phones they have shipped out already.
It sucks because most of us paid a large amount of money for these devices to have it be faulty( not something that can be fixed via software at this moment). Just my opinion.
Ditto, same spot here. was wondering about the spot for a while. I have dropped mine a million times and thought it was because of that.
would be nice to be able to change it in because of the spot because mine is beat down to the ground like 4 flat tires.
will they give me crap because of how beat up it is?
I know every time I go to Alltel and get a phone replaced via the insurance the first question they ask the Rep at the store is if the phone looks like it has been dropped or if it has water damage....I'm sure that is so they can blame it on the user. As far as the phone being under manufacturer warranty they usually just swap it out for me no questions asked. I just always hate when they open the box infront of me and give nothing but the phone....would be nice to have an extra case and charger...LOL..
anyone know if sprint good about swapping phones and if i should do insurance or manufacturer warranty and if i do insurace can i switch to touch or you can only change phone in first thirty days
i got 2 spots in lower left corner
Me too (x3)
I've been through three Sprint-branded titans because of this. I'm 100% sure it's a design flaw. If we all complain at once, HTC might actually listen and make a titan that doesn't do this!
I also have two pea-sized spots in the lower left quadrant of the screen. Doesn't really bother me though, as I only notice it when the phone is booting up.
I've got 3 spots lower-lefthand corner as well on my Mogul.
I made a poll to actually see the statistics of the effects of these Spots on the TITAN / 6800

So I'm about a month into my SGS2 ownership (from early release date) and I've noticed a problem
When I drag my notification bar down it's possible to see a circle that appears to be burned into the display, it's on the bottom right hand corner of the screen, it's an outline about 1mm thick and about the size of a 5p coin...it's only viewable under monotone greys but its rather annoying - I'm thinking it's due to a chip or antenna underneath becoming too hot and warping the pixels in that area.
I've also noticed the 2g/3g switching is rather aggressive too. Even though i'm in a 3G area it's dropping off every 10-20 seconds, I lose data connection and it has to revert back to 2g or nothing at all, constantly cycling and must be draining the battery a lot too - don't know if its related to the problem mentioned above or not!
Luckily enough, I have logged a call with phones4u - last day of the 28days!! so I can go in store and have it swapped out there and then rather than have to send it off back for repair and be without a phone for 7-14 days!!
Just wanted to make people aware and see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

That's the exact same thing on my new Nexus S.
If you replaced your, did the replacement have the same issue? I'm thinking of returning mine for an exchange but I want to be sure there isn't a consistent hardware problem happening.
I have noticed the same circular discoloration too. Except mine is on the bottom left side of the screen. It is also only visible when displaying greyish colours, such as when the notification bar is pulled down.
Anyway, it is barely noticable during normal use, so I guess not a big deal for me.

A lot of money to pay for such a high-caliber phone to have such a flaw. I notice it on varying monotones. Like when I have a carbon fiber type wallpaper or such as that.
BarryH_GEG said:
There's really two separate issues that sometimes overlap:
1) The left side banding which appears along with a yellow tint either under certain conditions or, to some, in everyday use. This would seem to be a design issue as, to date, it shows up on every single phone produced.
2) Screen QC issues which include: 1) suction cup circles from production, 2) fingerprints on the inside of the display, 3) dead pixels, 4) vertical or horizontal lines, 5) ghosting, 6) white or black blotches, and 7) wide swings in color temperature.
There's no doubt the QC issues are probably vexing to Samsung. Based on the sheer quantity of displays they need to produce to satisfy demand they're either intentionally allowing displays to go out that shouldn't or are finding out from customers that bad displays got passed QC. Considering the large number of phones sold it's hard to guess the bad:good ratio but it would appear its larger than appropriate. And it doesn't appear to be getting better as newer builds seem to have the same issues as early builds. So banding may be forever but swapping phones may definitely help with the other issues.
I do think that adding the QC issues on top of the banding issue does compound it on some phones. That could certainly explain why some of us are happy and others aren't. There's still a lot of subjectivity at play so it will always be hard to say if what's acceptable to some is unacceptable to others. But with all the phones sold, you'd still think if more than a few percent had serious screen issues there would be a bigger audience for this thread and the issue(s) would have become more prominent on its own. I'd like to think things will get better but production demands may continue to allow QC issues to occur at higher than normal rates. Something that's frustrating for everyone - including Samsung.
Someone said something about the technology being flawed. Here's two links to stories where Apple was/is trying to get SAMOLED for their products. To me, it just helps reinforce that the benefits (color, contrast, viewing angles) still outweigh the downsides (screen life, burn in, inconsistency). And I'm sure Apple's engineers fully reviewed both the upside and downside before considering SAMOLED so it's still kind of a vote of confidence in the technology.

Highlighted in red is the reason for that specific screen defect, some may claim its a minimal issue due to not enough returns out of 6Million phones sold. If an option to get it replaced then please do but expect ANOTHER form of screen defect on the replacement unit may it be yellow banding, extreme color temps or white blotches on a totally black image.

Im not saying you should replace your phone since your entire happy with it and its not a real issue to you but things like this make manufacturers skimp on quality control.
Very informative post.
I would exchange my GS2 if it was new, but then I already have lots of stuff inside. Also, I have rooted my phone already, so I guess my warranty is void.

You could always let the store decide about it, here in my place the software warranty is totally different from the hardware.. I even told the service personel that I flashed a lot of non samsung stuff on my phone and he told me as long as the issue is not software related theres nothing to be void. Of course this varies from region to region.
I went ahead and exchanged my Nexus S and so far I believe I have a perfect one...knock on wood...lol
I had the previous one rooted and using a custom recovery img. I relocked it but made the recovery permanent. This replacement...I rooted it but am leaving the stock recovery img in place. I even relocked it after rooting it. The only difference between this one and a stock phone is this one is rooted.
Two small pinpoints of white light on the screen. Are these dead pixels? Stuck Pixels?
I'm guessing that either way I should exchange it. So, apparently Asus is going to be having quality issues?

Guess this bad boy is going back...
I got a replacement Prime yesterday and thought everything was perfect until I opened my web browser to google, which is pretty much all white and noticed a bright spot like you are describing in the title. Mine are definitely NOT stuck/dead pixels. I know because I returned my first one in part because of stuck pixels. It's almost like these pixel(s) allow slightly more light through than the adjacent pixels. Sort of like light bleed but not at the edge of the screen. I can only see it on white or very, very light backgrounds. It disappears entirely on darker colors.
It is unfortunate but I will not replace this again for a third time. It goes away unless my Prime is charging or docked (which I assume is because it is similar to the tablet being plugged in) and can only be seen on an all white background. I will never use my tablet plugged in, I charge it at night when I sleep, and the limited amount I have it docked is not an issue since it only shows up on an all white background and seems less noticeable than a dead/stuck pixel. Honestly, a smudged screen is more noticeable/annoying. Since I don't use my dock much it will probably end up having a dead battery anyway which means I really wouldn't see it much, unless the battery in the dock is required for it to function while attached, I'm not sure but will find out. Thinking about it I guess it probably does need to be charged for the ports and everything to work unless it leaches off the tablet. Who knows...I'll test it at some point.
It is kind of strange though and I really dislike trying to justify a flaw to keep a $500 device but whatever. IPS screens have some nice benefits but they seem to have a lot of flaws too like bright spots, pretty bad light bleed and more stuck pixels than I am used too. I went back and forth in my OCD head so many times about how many times I would exchange or return this device before I get one that is pristine but if I return it there is nothing else that interests me.
Asus had quality issues with their past Transformer and to think the 1080p tablet will be any different is ignorant.
Anyway, end blog. Since that's what XDA is now

If it's only 2 pixels and they are not directly adjacent, it's unlikely that they will take it back as that is deemed an acceptable tolerance for dead/stuck pixels. I think you need to have 5 or more total or 2 directly adjacent.
Pretty much all manufacturers use this guideline I believe. I hope I am wrong and you do get to exchange it.

I had one dead pixel on my Xoom and Best Buy replaced it without even turning it on to verify
I had two stuck pixels when I first got my Prime. Running pixel fixer apps didn't fix the problem. However, both of them have "unstuck" themselves after a few days of use. If you have some time before you have to return it, you may want to wait a little.
EDIT: Check that. I just ran a dead pixel test and only one of the two unstuck itself. The other one is so unnoticeable to me that I haven't seen it.

Not sure whether to return, the rest of the tablet is awesome!!

Hey all, I'm a new Droid Razr Maxx owner! I bought it off contract from someone locally and I'm really happy with the phone so far!
With one exception....I noticed a stuck/dead pixel last night off to the right a bit of the center of the screen.
Someone with more knowledge than me can tell me which it is, but it shows up white on dark backgrounds. I think that's a stuck one correct?
Anyhow, I ran one of those stuck pixel apps last night while I was sleeping and it's still there. So I'm afraid I'm SOL right? Would Motorola see this as a reason to replace the screen under warranty? I highly doubt it, but just looking for options.
If I can't do anything about it, I guess I will just have to live with it. But I'm pretty anal about stuff like that haha.
What do you guys think? Thanks!
Is it like this one in my thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552688
If it is, you don't need to worry. There is a bigger chance you will get a phone with another bigger fault if you exchange it. I didn't exchange mine
Also it's not precisly a stuck pixel it has something to do with the gpu because everytime the capative buttons is on aka lighted it's visible.
Mine isn't much like yours. Mine is a stuck white pixel towards the middle of the screen and it stays in that location no matter what.
It's weird because it doesn't show up on a black screen. It shows up on gray and more neutral colors. It's like the size of a pinhole but it's pretty annoying. I'm assuming it's annoying because I know it's there lol.
Unless you're brave enough to replace the screen, I'd try to get it replaced. My old G'Nex had a speaker issue. It slowly started acting up until it bit the bullet. I didn't buy my phone from Verizon and when I went to a store they said they wouldn't help me. I called 611 (from within the store- at this point I was pissed). I explained that I didn't buy my phone from Verizon but it is a manufacturer's defect. They advised me to take it to a store for review, told them I was at one, they finally just agreed to send me a "like new" replacement.
Now, maybe the fact that I've been with them 10 years, never missed a payment, and am currently not under contract had an affect, but I always seem to get much better results when I call in rather than go to a store.
Call them, worse they can say is no.

Color me skeptical. Should I try it?

If it doesn't do this on a black screen, it's more likely a defect in the glass than a video RAM or OLED defect.
A GPU or video RAM defect would always display the defect, even with black backgrounds, because that pixel would always have one of the high-order bits set.
Try looking at the pixel with a jeweler's magnifying glass, and tilt the screen back and forth while viewing the defect closely. If it's the glass, it will be obvious. If not, you can replace the OLED display, which will be expensive (more so if you have it done).
It could be a grain of sugar stuck to the glass...

When I look at my screen there's a couple of spots that are really bright it looks like the pixels may be damaged. It almost looks like you can see to the back side of the screen. I've had an otterbox defender on it since I got it, plus its never been dropped. I just got the phone a week ago. If I take it back to get replaced will I get a new phone or a "like New“ phone?
I really hate to see this on a new phone. Any suggestions.

If you bring/send it back to verizon, they should give you a new phone. If it is through insurance, you may get a refurb but the phone is still new so they may only have new ones in stock.
best bet is call verizon and see what they will do.
I've got a similar spot on my phone but it doesn't bother me enough to ship it out for a possibly refurbished one. It's a single spot in the upper left portion of the screen that I can only notice when the screen is completely dark. I'm guessing it's a relatively widespread issue since I think I've heard something similar at least twice before.
