Anyone in top 5 get reduced speeds? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just wondering how slow they make the connection?
I'm moving and canceled dsl a little early so I've been using my un limited data to stream Netflix the past week, got a text saying I was in top 5 after ten gigs, which I didn't think was that much.
Does anyone else think with faster speeds should come more data? Especially with a phone like a computer.

10gigs? I've gotten the top 5 text last month when i passed 2 gigs. The month before I got the text after 4 gigs. lol
As for your original question on speed... sorry i didn't really keep track and do anything after the msgs that required a lot of speed.

i use my home wifi all the time
i have a 2 gig data plan never went over
only got 1 text msg the first month said i had used 60% of my data plan
i think there watching me

I got slowed down to 10 KBps -> about 100 kbps

What is the "top 5"? Top 5 what?

I average about twelve to fifteen gigs a month with streaming netflix and pandora all the time, but still never got served...

[Q] 2gb Data Plan

My contract recently expired and I am looking to upgrade. My question is, is the 2gb Data plan enough to support the Infuse, Atrix, or Inspire? I have read the other thread on this question, however all the responses were about getting unlimited data. I would get it but, being in school, i cant justify/afford the cost of buying an iPhone 2g. I have been looking for a fellow friend or developer in my area to lend me theirs but I am looking to get the new phone in a week or two.
So, in general, is the 2gb plan enough?
My day during the year, 8-3, classes, no major usage, mabey 30 mins internet.
4-10 moderate usage, mabey up to 1 hour usage. Internet, mabey an app or two, and possible Pandora a day or two a month. Tethering mabey 20 mins max 3 days a week or less. weekends, moderate usage, internet sparingly all day, mabey 1:00 max. Summer is similar to weekends.
What is the general opinion? Or personal experience.
2gb plan will be more than enough. Also, just jump on wifi when possible and u will be set.

I agree, I have the 2G plan and never go over my usage. I surf the internet and listen to pandora and iheart radio several hours a day. Once in a while, if it looks like I am getting close to going over 2G, I just try to maximize any nearby wifi connections.
Watch out with the 2gb plans.
I have a grandfathered unlimited plan and I use it a lot.
In Austin I average around 6-7 m/bit download rates and I find I average around 1 gb a day with around 35gb a month.
I run Pandora, Google music beta, and Netflix all the time and also I transfer movies and tv shows from uTorrent remote.
I think you need to be cautious about signing a 2 year plan with only 2gb a month as with the new uses for android coming out the average data consumed will continue to rise. When signing those contracts you need to be aware about what you are going to do not just now but in one year and two years from now.
If you can, I recommend trying to find a way to get on an unlimited plan.
I've heard that 2GB of data roughly translates to about 2 hours of audio streaming per day. AT&T willl send text messages when you reach 1/2 your usage. If you go over, they just tack another $10 for an extra GB.
35gb is ridiculous. I have unlimited but on day 23 of 31 ive only used 960 mb. I use the gps pretty often and stream pandora for about 1.5 hours a day. push email on 3 accounts and facebook about once an hour. update apps and what not whenever they pop up. id say im an average user. 2gb seems reasonable.
Though if you are currently with att and your contact is about to expire, you can renew your contract and get a discounted phone and it will keep your grandfathered plan. But if you are with another provider and are signing up for ATT, no such luck.
I have used under 2GBs/month since I have bot the Atrix. (currently 600 mg usage with 6 days left in my month) I stream either Slacker or Pandora all the time in the vehicle. The rub is streaming video. If you are going to do that all the time over the H+ you will go over.
I do use lots of data on the lapdock. But I don't have tethering and I am using wifi. I use the lapdock to surf the web, watch you tube, dowload, etc. In my current month I have used (per Netcounter) 6GB of data on wifi.
I did the iPhone unlimited data deal only because I was looking down the road to Netflix on Gingerbread (hoping).
Bottom line is if you can avoid video or have access to wifi when you stream then you can stay under...

That's an absolutely ridiculous amount of data. Many residential internet customers at home don't even use that much data.
2gb would be more than enough for most. In Canada most find that 500mb/month is sufficient, but I'd recommend trying to get at least 1gb to make sure you don't run into data overages.
If you have access to Wifi and Hotspots you'll be set.
All depends on your own usage patterns. Last month I was at 1.1gig of 2 on day 30. Since I signed up with att I have usually always been under 1 gig. Really my low usage is because of knowledge of limit. Before when I was on tmobile I would be up near 4 or 5 gigs.
Also being stuck on 2g a lot of the time near where I live helps.

I don't know. I keep waiting for them to send me a letter or throttle my connection but neither happens.
I routinely download/stream TV shows from my home computer while I am away and each show averages around 250mb. Also I found that Google Music Beta uses a tonne of data when streaming my music collection. If I listen to 10 songs it is around 45-55mb. Also Google Music caches the whole song when I start playing it so if I jump around tracks in one hour I will use 200-250mb.
Also since H+ in Austin is faster than most free wifi hotspots I don't use wifi at all.

My network at home uses an average of 600-900 Gb a month.
(Steam, Hulu, Netflix, FTP, Video Conferencing, Remote Desktop, it all adds up fast plus I do not have cable tv)
Uploading my music collection to Google took 120gb alone.
I guess what my first reply was trying to say (but poorly) is if possible try to get an unlimited plan. Trust me the extra $5 a month in price difference on AT&T (vs. 2gb plan) is worth the peace of mind of not having to monitor your data usage.
However if you feel that you can manage 2gb or even 200mb and are willing to be diligent with data traffic monitors the cheaper plans could be for you. Especially if you spend most of your day in a Wifi area.
I have used 4gb so far this month with another week to go. This is no tethering, netflix or pandora for the month. Last month I used almost 8gb tethering and streaming music.

I have unlimited also, but I thought AT&T had capped unlimited at 5GB and it's no longer truly unlimited.
Off to check on that.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app
I feel restricted with my 2gb cap. I am always afraid to play a video or stream music for fear of going over my cap. It effects the way I use my phone and for that reason I hate bandwidth caps.
Without wifi, my average is 3-3.5 gb. For some reason my old winmo phone averaged 700-900 megs a month. Of course, the speed is faster, don't use opera mini no more, plenty of apps, etc...

[Q] AT&T throttled!

Ok so i hit 10GB today on my phone and now am being throttled down to 100K-200K.
Anyone else have this happen?
Well, AT&T is known to throttle the top 5% of data users (w/ the grandfathered unlimited data plan). You must be in the top 5%.
How do you know you are being throttled? Did you get a text?
250 KB/s is good speed in my neck of the woods, even with full bars of H+. My normal is 150-200.

There is an icon baked into the notification icons labled throttled something. Does it put the icon in your notification bar when they throttle?
10 GB wouldn't be that hard. I use 6ish on a normal month with mostly Pandora, and a few ROMs or podcasts. I don't tether.
Personally I wish they would just announce a soft cap. If I knew I got full speed up to 5 GB, then got throttled it would be easier to manage than a moving target such as "top 5%".
You can check your data usage several ways. *data# (type into dialer, press call, get a text) would be the easiest. There is a myAT&T App, or the full website.

They are punishing me for using a data plan thy pushed on me to the fullest that I can.

I doubt 10gigs is the top 5%. I'd say that's just when att wants you to think ur in the top 5 just so they can throttle you.

Lol idk how people with full time jobs find the time outside of their homes (where wifi is avail) to do all of those things.. pandora/radio is understandable...
Its funny because I remember how difficult it was to convince customers to get a smartphone because at the time, unlimited data was the only thing available. Now, its as if everybody and their grandmothers want unlimited data and fight dear life to keep it.
Anyways, I just think the smartphone industry just blew up too quick to sustain the growing amount of smartphone users on its network.

10 GB is a lot of data, but I have always been bothered that my "unlimited data" plan wasn't quite unlimited. But at least I don't think I'll have to worry too much about reaching that limit.
I would try to use WiFi when ever I could. A little less Netflix wouldn't be a bad thing.

The throttling was effective only like a month or so ago.
its hard that all the wireless companies are moving towards tiered data while technology is moving to cloud services which contradicts one another...
Just remember though that theyre only throttling high data users because high data = more bandwidth used = less avail bandwidth/speeds for everyone else in your area.

Throttled without warning?

Hey guys, I've been downloading apps to my note since i got it on Saturday. Apparently i used around 2.1 gb of data. This morning i woke up and my data speeds on "LTE" were around 0.11-0.16 mbps. It has been throttle same all day long. Have i been throttled without Warning?
I called at&t and they said i wasn't throttled. They had to put me through some tech support that didn't help at all. No change. My sisters iphone 4s gets 2.1mbps downloads...

Data usage on this device is shocking. According to AT&T I've used more data (800mb) in 2 days than I use in a typical month on my Sprint qHD android phone. Some of is probably setup - downloading emails from IMAP and exchange for the first time, etc. And obviously as a pocket tablet this device is so useful I haven't touched my real tablet since Friday.
But if you're on a datapro plan they have no reason the throttle you...you just pay the extra $10/GB...so I would try some more speed tests in various locations and keep records of what you find.

I use 4-15gb a month. Those extra game downloads (1.3gb for max payne) can add up quick.
Averages around 6gb, think it peaked at 10. I don't use wifi though as I don't see the point if paying for unlimited.
I did exactly the same things on 3g for a while & data used was cut by at least 50% but it's too damn slow.
I rarely break 1 gb even though I have unlimited data. However last weekend I was at my friend's when his internet went out so I tethered his whole network to my phone and in one night hit close to 2gb used. Only a few days left in my billing cycle so I'll probably end up around 3 gb.
I fluctuate between 8-11gB/mo. This tiered data thing is really gonna cramp my style, cuz I have no idea how much my FB queen uses. But she's on her Rhyme probably more than I am on my Rezound. But hers is only 3g, so I guess it can't be that bad.
Funny/sad part is, the HTC Rhyme is so slow and buggy that the poor baby wants to throw it against a wall half the time. It's soured her on android so much that she's thinking about jumping ship to the iCrap. Wait till she sees the Galaxy S3. She'll come around.

I use NHL Gamecenter all the time during the regular season (tether my phone to my TV for full games on my big screen...wish the resolution was higher ) to show games my cable provider doesn't give me. I use anywhere from 2 to 3 gb a month and that is with having wifi on whenever um at home. Strictly 3g where I live also so that probably makes a difference.

Yea mine fluctuates also depending on a lot of things but it has rarely gone below 3gig a month and has been as high as 20gig...
i have to say i really don't understand what is happening right now with the data caps...Manufacturers are constantly making new, better and faster phones, the phone companies are upgrading their networks, and the developers are providing content to take advantage of the capabilities of these new phones and fast networks, Netflix, music, Skype etc., so many of these things are huge data hogs...
Why would the carriers limit the data so much...these new plans on Verizon are crazy expensive, i am grandfathered in on the $30 unlimited and that is a lot for me. I cant and couldn't use my phone the way i do now on the tiered data plan, i just wouldn't be able to use a smart phone any longer. i just don't get it...it seems counter productive to the whole scheme of things.
I'm a power user..

average is about 100gb. most ever was close to 300gb. i used to tether a lot for online gaming... although every night i stream music and fall asleep leaving it streaming. i also stream videos a lot via netflix & hbo go.
No more than 10 GB a month, and usually around 4-5. My 4g service sucks and it's constantly dropping, so I use it primarily for Google Music and use wifi for any big downloads.
Used to get 30-40 Mbps down, but my speeds are closer to 5 Mbps now, so it rarely makes sense to use 4G for downloads any more.

Data usage and penalties?

How much data do you guys use each month? Are there any penalties for high usage? Do you know of anyone being dropped from service for high data usage? Since I have started using tethering my data usage is through the roof. I was just wondering how much the rest of you guys use.
I use between 3 to 5 gb a month. One month I hit 8 gb. Been with sprint for 2 years and some change. Never got a message or letter saying I was over anything or at a limit and they don't lower the speeds if you hit a certain amount either. I think they charge for tethering now but never used it.

It's unlimited... Well, unless you got the cheaper plan. I saw a report of one guy on sprint who used around 460 gigs one month with usb tether, he never heard a word. Personally, I am about to give my unlimited data line on verizon to a family member. I have been using between 100-200 gigs per month with them for years now.
And seriously, if anyone says "BLAH BLAH, OMGZOR you're why we have data caps now", I might just flip out.
Edit: I got my note 3 on sprint about 3 weeks ago. First smart phone on sprint, always been with verizon. Out of curiosity I checked my data usage and it was around 13-14 gigs... I was a bit surprised how high it was.
SprintFreeMsg:

I'm generally around 120 GB/month. Last month came in at 118 GB.
I've been with Sprint for fifteen years, been tethering for half of that, not a peep, ever.
Unlimited means unlimited... Just don't roam; that will get you flagged!
That is great news! Its looking like I am going to be around the 75gb mark by the end of the month. Thanks for all the info!
