[Q] ZIp to Tar for Odin Flash - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, Well i c there are lot roms developed and to test them you need CWM kernel to flash the zip file but is there a tool that can convert them from .zip to .tar or .md5 with no wipe so it can be flashed with ODIN as i am in canada using GT9100M and if I flash some other kernels then required it goes into boot loop and cannot restore anything from backup using CWM or FLASH. Also the rom "AndyX ROM v2.0 - XWKL1 - 2.3.6 - Stable - Fast - Beautifull - Siyah 2.6.5+ - JKay" is in zip and different language and same with other roms can the language be changed to english and converterd to be flashed with "NO WIPE" using odin.
Please help.
Thank you

Such a tool isn't needed, just flash a cf-root kernel for your firmware and flash the zip from cwm. Your i9100m is identical to the internationl i9100, you can flash any kernel/modem/rom that is made for a i9100.

Im sure you can change the language in the settings menu, you can't convert a rom that's meant to be flashed through cwm to odin.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried to use that kernel to restore my files but does not seem to finish it of and gets aborted and therefore I have to re-flash the entire phone. Is there a way to create a File Dump of my phone so that I can use it with ODIN?

No, you need to use cwm recovery to restore/backup roms.

Thanks. I think I found my answer through some research. Might be helpful check it out.

Buddy i already told that 7zip just puts in tar format but do not convert the files in the tar components(Mdem, etc)
You might explain what you are trying to achieve by putting a zip into a tar .
Are you trying to make a CWM zip file flash-able via Odin .
jje
Can it be done ?
Lol, that sounds cool. Anyway, I think I'll keep flashing tars with odin and zips with CWM because what you sugest scares the **** out of me. Anyway I'll keep reading this thread out of curiosity.
so your trying to make an update.zip file into an odin.tar file to flash in pda?
I think he ment if you download (for example) new clockwork recovery version in zip format (ment for flashing thru phone recovery) can it be transformed into .tar (ment for flashing thru odin) !
I would also like to know this.

Tar To Zip
I dont know why you are trying to flash a zip via odin by converting it CWM works just fine if u have the latest kernel. I did find some old cwm kernels were not seeing zip files on my sd card make sure you have the latest. From here K13 or k14 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 bottom of the page worked for me.
im curious about this, ever since i rooted and flashed my kernel, i cant properly install ANY CWM roms. on aborts drring verification. I was consierding repacking the ZIP and flashing with ODIN.... just annoying i cant flash any of my roms
Thats usual if CWM is 3e not 4e .
jje
I would also like to know if its possible to repack cwm .zip file into ODIN .tar?? Why? I dont want to have root. I tried with yaffey-v0.2 but for now, no luck.
Only problem is to make a working system.img. Tar package can be done with commands in cygwin or in Samsung tool kit...
Help anybody??

You are in the S2 Forum here. Which version of odin and which FW are you trying to flash? Whats the error message you get?
Yes it can be done and it's pretty easy to do. Google is you're friend. I've converted devil recovery and also modems and all work fine with odin.

U can try a simple dirty trick to make cfroot works with any rom(or maybe just gingerbread) without loosing wifi capability. Rename ar6000.ko file in /system/wifi as ar6000.ko.bak using any filemanager that have root capability(obviously u need to be rooted before attempted this). Then get ur hands on ar6000.ko file from kpn and put it in the same folder as previous renamed ar6000.ko file, give it proper permission and flash cfroot b80. This trick works with zckpa china fw, so in theory it should work on other rom too. Btw dont shoot me if this doesnt work, im just helping

I kept my self really busy, let me tell ya what I did so far:
1- Flashed the new FW with Odin, things are smooth there nothing major.
2- Installed CWM 4.0.0.9, smooth and easy.
3- Installed CF-Room 3.7 b78 and then b80, had weird stuff going back there but it eventually worked, I lost the boot audio on the Samsung logo.
4- Installed EXT4 converter, no problem.
5- Started converting from RFS to EXT4. first time it finished converting but refused to boot correctly, I re-did all the above and started to convert again, now it refused to convert the /system, saying I don't have enough space for the restore, it kept failing here until I freed some space by using Titanium Backup and removed crapware, tried again and now I have EXT4 instead of RFS.
6- Enabled Apps2SD using the Tweak Manager DT: Auto Start.
7- Flashed the Apps2SD GUI, the phone rebooted a couple of times but it didn't install, couldn't see the icon of it.
And now, I must have some sleep! Good night ya all
i have gingerbread 2.3.4 on my ace so can i apply this rom
i get 1250 in quadrant without any mods . just after i flashed . amazing Rom .

CF-Root b80 already have this solution.
To install CF-Root to Gingerbread ROM: flash CF-Root recovery b79 using Samsung default recovery. Reboot into CWM recovery, flash CF-Root boot b80.
Indonesia offical Gingerbread update: DXKP9
If ketut is happy, then we all should be happy too, when do you think you can start working on it?
I so far had around 3 or 4 SOD's, not sure they're caused by the ROM it self or the stuff mentioned before that I installed on it, the ROM also randomly reboot it self while working, it crashed and rebooted while I was in the middle of a phone call :/, this only happened after installing the C-fr 7.3 b80.

If I were you, I'd use Kies to do the upgrade, you have the official ROM installed, why not use the official tool too?
If you don't care about the official tool then simply map each file type to the right section in Odin, you can still perform the upgrade without having the modem file.

[Q] Plz help upgrade to 2.2 using Odin

Hi guy,,,
i had un-successfull tries with odin. but Also had a successful one when flashing Vibrant with Stock 2.1. it was very simple indeed just downloaded .tar and .pit file, and flash , and thats it.
i want upgrade to 2.2 (latest version of 2.2 , maybe 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 not sure)
using Odin.
can any1 provide a straight link to download STOCK OFFICIAL FROYO .tar and .pit files ? to use wth Odin ??
Thx Guys
Ok , another quick Q: when i flashed 2.1, i downloaded .pit and .tar file.
now im downloading T959UVKA7 -that is 2.2 - from http://www.samfirmware.com/
but i donkt know how to find associated .pit ???
is any ROM MUST has a .pit file to flash ???
Latest one was kb5 and you can find odin version here.,,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12913705
plz , i downloaded T959UVKA7.rar , do i need .pit file ??? and from where i get it ??
does every version of ROM have a distinct .pit file ?

can i find answer to this please ?
Answer is NO!!
Mapping can be done using the same 512 pit file.
Also you only need to repartition once which you already did when you Odin's to JFD Eclair
Therefore, you don't need to partition anymore.
Also UN-tick reboot on Odin, Otherwise you wont have control the first time in wiping critical stuff before you re-boot. You use the menu on the phone to wipe data/factory reset and then do the wipe the cache next, Then do a reboot otherwise you might end up with a boot loop.
Also why aren't you using Rom Manager, to flash ROM's instead of Odin?
Your going to find out here shortly that 99% of all ROM's are in a zipped file, and must be done using CWM recovery method.
thx for your reply , can u provide me wth a link for detailed guide for beginners to use Rom Manager from scratch ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458
Got Root? YOU NEED A CUSTOM RECOVERY!
Big props to XDA user Koush for his amazing Rom Manager App. In short, this lets you create system backups for those "oops" moments. It also gives you a directory of ROMs for easy downloading and flashing. Yeah, it is that cool. Please see his post for instructions. After successfully installing, be sure a make a Nandroid Backup of your system before flashing any rom's (see below).
Installation instructions:
1.Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2.Flash Recovery.
3.Choose Vibrant as your phone.
4.Accept the Superuser prompt.
5.On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
6.Watch the backup go!
Thx Dear,
plz i need to confirm that setting before i dive into Ocean
- i open Odin 1.3 (leave Auto-reboot , F. reset time checked) by default
- will load 512.bit into PIT
- will load "T959UVKA7-REV05-home-low-CL865177.tar.md5" into PDA
- put phone into download mode , connect USB cable , and press Strat.
is this right ? any additional steps or files required ? (i hear about csc , modem files , etc , do i need such files ? or just everything is included in T959UVKA7 version i downloaded from samfirmware.com)
thx in advance..

[Q] Flashing stock zip via cwm from CM9

Hi all, thanks for viewing this thread
- I flashed my friend's Bell SGS2 i9100M to CM9 a while back, but now he wants to go back to stock and needs to make use of his warranty because of the battery charging problem even when it's is not plugged in
- I need to flash his phone back to Bell stock firmware UGKG2, but I do not have the necessary firmware (PDA) .tar file to flash back to stock via Odin. I've checked Intratech's thread but multiupload is down so I cannot download the .tar files
- However, I have the stock ROM in .zip file, the kernel, modem and CSC in .tar file
- Unfortunately, I did not make the nandroid backup before flashing CM9 on his phone
- I currently do not have his phone with me, but he will be coming over in a few hours
So my questions are:
1) Is it okay to just flash the stock ROM .zip file via recovery from CM9? (After the standard procedures of wiping system, data, cache, etc.)
2) Will the CM9 kernel recovery flash the stock ROM .zip file? I think it might give some e: (some sdcard) error, I'm guessing... If so, will flashing a custom Gingerbread kernel then flashing the stock ROM .zip file via CWM work?
3) If 1 & 2 don't work, does this mean I absolutely have to flash back to stock via Odin?
I've also got an usb jig prepared
Thanks in advance

Hey,
like u said, the .zip includes .tar files.
.tar files always must flashed via odin!
Only way to to it via phone is using odin on phone, but I'm not up to date how is the status and if it's really working.
So to be sure:
1) make a full wipe (like u said above with formatting system, cache etc.)
2) Put files in Odin and flash
3) Flash cf-root or kernel to get CWM back (if u want)

[Q] Flashing ROM/Kernel via Creepy's Guide

OK I have read creepy's guide and several other ones and downloaded all the files.
So far the steps that I understand:
1. Recovery Wipe
2. Download Mobile Odin on your phone
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash custom kernel by selecting zImage file. (Apparently I need to use a gingerbread Kernel even though I am going to ICS? this I also don't really understand)
4. He says you can use Mobile Odin to flash a ROM but never explains how. The way I did this before is by loading a .tar file into the PDA section of ODIN on PC and then just clicking start while my phone is in download mode. I looked into Mobile Odin and found no option saying ROM or PDA. My options are Kernel, System, Data, Cache, Param, Modem, or Hidden. So where do I load the .zip/.tar file?
Help would be very appreciated thank you.
You can not use GB kernel on ICS rom. To flash kernel you should put zImage to kernel section on mobile odin and push flash firmware.
To flash rom via mobile odin you should put tar or md5 rom file to system section of mobile odin. Push flash firmware.

if the zImage file is inside of the .tar file does that mean flashing the ROM will automatically flash the kernel as well?
Also creepy specifically states to use a gingerbread kernel, "You must use a Gingerbread kernel when using this method. If you use an ICS kernel while your phone is running Gingerbread, it will not boot!!!"

If tar or md5 file have zImage, mobile odin will leave old kernel.
If you want to flash ICS rom You should put tar or md5 file of rom in system and ICS kernel of this rom in kernel.
f you want to flash GB rom You should put tar or md5 file of rom in system and GB kernel of this rom in kernel.
Creepy states don't mix GB kernel with ICS rom and v.v.
If rom file have inside hidden, modem, zImage, system (factoryfs), cache. You can on mobil odin push "open file or archive .tar, .tar.md5, .exe, and separate file" and choose rom tar or md5 file. Mobile odin will put all file in right plase.

Apparently these are all .zip files? How am I suppose to do this using .zip files?
This is the ROM I am trying to flash:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948
The .zip file has only 5 files inside of it when extracted, cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin, and zImage with no specified file extension.
When you said it will "leave the old kernel" do you mean it will leave it in place, or leave it to the new kernel inside of the .tar file?
So should I extract the .zip file use the zImage as my kernel and load the whole .tar file under system?
Or do I need to use a different kernel like fluxxi?
EDIT: I was also curious about this ROM, would it be difficult to install? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752232

It's same. put in "open file".
After installing rom you can change kernel via mobile odin.
After installing you will have a root and it' very easy.
You can change kernel to siyah kernel nomswap http://www.mediafire.com/?81odsaa6o6ib165. Take from zip file zImage and install via mobile odin. After you will have root and cwm recovery.
But it is for I777 based stock rom. For other rom you should install siyah mswap http://www.mediafire.com/?vihwj8l5wv8v263

Ok great I know have all the files selected in mobile odin. I wanna go over this with you one more time before i begin the flash to make sure I made no mistakes.
1. I did not do a factory reset because I am still on gingerbread(rooted) is this ok?
2. I used "open file" as you said and it placed all the proper files in the right location.
3. There are two options that I'm not sure what they do, "wipe data and cache" and "Wipe Dalvik cache" Should I check both of these?
As soon as you tell me I'm fine ill start the flash! thanks again!
I impatiently started the flash I hope i didnt mess anything up

It ensures that there are no "left behinds" from prior ROMs or kernels that could (and often do) conflict with the new firmware you're flashing. Many of the problems that people tend to blame on ROMs or kernels are actually often resolved when they go back and wipe fully before the install. May as well get it out of the way in the first place instead of ending up pulling your hair out (or frustrating the dev enough to do the same) because it wasn't done with a clean slate.

Many of the problems that people tend to blame on ROMs or kernels are actually often resolved when they go back and wipe fully before the install. May as well get it out of the way in the first place instead of ending up pulling your hair out (or frustrating the dev enough to do the same) because it wasn't done with a clean slate.

Right now I'm having one problem, wallpaper scrolling is not working after flashing creepy's ICS ROM. Is this because I did not wipe before hand?
