Root and DRM content - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi folks,
May I ask a question please
I remember seeing somewhere before that rooted users can't use Google Video anymore or having some other difficulties accessing DRM protected contents,
is it still the case here for Razr? specifically US Verizon Razr.
Does anyone here have Razr rooted and have no issues buying Amazon/Google Videos and no issues with their, say, NFL app by verizon?
Thanks for any confirmation!!
Cheers,
J

Confirmation!
I can confirm, I'm rooted and I have no problems with NFL and netflicks which I have heard uses DRM also. So there you go!!

Thank you! I can pass Google Video but I can't miss Steelers' game tomorrow

best to your steelers!

I don't have a horse in this race since my dolphins were a disappointment this year, but I will be watching anyways as an all around football fan!

The only thing that should disable your Google Video is unlocking your bootloader (impossible at the moment).
This has been explained by ASUS, talking of the Transformer Prime, that comes with a locked bootloader and a tool for unlocking it.
In less words, they're saying that the Transformer Prime comes locked because of DRM content protection and when you unlock it, they're disabling the DRM keys management because they can be easily hacked with something like a custom kernel.
They're absolutely right.

Thanks and just for the record. Google video is not working after rooting (and I am fine with that )

is it "loaked" ?
lol
omg please say it isnt
Even if/when we get an unlocked leak (which I am absolutely confidant we will get an "accidental" leak top shut us up) there is a good chance that these leaks will start drying up. By time the Evo4D5G comes out next year we won't even expect a phone to not be crypto-signed.
If they don't do this 'officially', and out loud in public then we have absolutely no guarantees that they ever will...and probably will not.
Unfortunately doing it out loud and in public is the _last_ thing they want to do. They want to bend to our demands even less than they want to lock damned phones. I'm pretty convinced that this is due to a back-room deal to get things like Netflix and GoogleMovies and Blockbuster approved by the MPAAs of the world.
...I'm still not sure--aside from tether--what locking up a phone will actually prevent that will save or make them money besides extending the useful life of the devices......but the thing is that those of us who know how to do these things in the first place are also the early-adopter crowd who will pay top price and wait in line at 4am to get a device that doesn't have all the bugs shaken out of it yet.....My mom, my brother, most people I work with...most people on the planet--who do not know nor care about rooting and custom roms--are the ones who will keep these phones as long as possible anyway...with or without upgrading the rom...if they could just click-n-upgrade to CM7 or whatever....well, that'd be a different story...they wouldn't upgrade till the phone caught fire....but these people wouldn't know or care to learn how to do this anyway....
...so they lock *US* out of the phone, we don't buy them....they lose those sales...or they don't lock us out, we buy them, root them, upgrade them, and then line up to be the first to buy the next device....win win, right? I just don't get it....are they scared of '1 click upgrades' being developed for everyone to use? I doubt that....there are plenty of 1-click-root procedures and ROManager anuyway....that's 80% of the way there....and nobody does that anyway...I just don't get it, wtf are they locking out (or in)??? I don't see how this benefits anyone....is it only about tether? cuz I could just just as much data listening to pandora all month as I could downloading a movie tethered to my tablet or whatever....
I just don't get it.

I think you hit on a couple points here, but really I think what happened has to do with HTC Watch (their own mobile movie rental service) and the contracts they're signing with studios to provide more on-demand content.
Movie/Music/Game studios probably won't allow anyone to distribute their copy-written content without extreme steps to assure them that the manufacturer is doing everything they can to avoid piracy/illegal downloading &/or access.
I'm willing to bet that bootloader and partition encryption is something they've gone the length of assuring these companies so to be able to provide on-demand content as a revenue generating service. If it's in contracts, then we're screwed.

couldn't we just use the mirroring hdmi thing to a tv and then from there use a recorder to copy the movie over. I mean i am just wondering if that's possible and if it is it just means that no matter what you try to do from people stealing content, people will just figure out a way to do it.
It's a streaming service.

I agree but at the same time that would make it kind of pointless for me. Honestly, I could never see myself sitting down for an entire movie on my phone. Hopefully that is not the case.
that would be dumb if it didn't. I can't stand watching a movie on my phone let alone pay for it just to be seen on a 4 inch screen

I hadn't even heard of HTC Watch up until this post. I'm absolutely convinced 100% that this is the smoking gun in the matter of "why?"
Now, if that is the case they will NEVER be able to officially unlock these phones without violating these contracts. We can only hope for leaks...and to be honest, I've never seen so much internal development software leaked by any other company in my life so reliably. Sure, there have been companies with bigger leaks or more leaks but never with such reliability....OTA's before they go OTA, eng h-boots, test versions, etc etc etc, it is absolutely ludicrous. I have a hard time thinking that it is entirely accidental or just one rogue guy who hasn't been identified and fired....repeatedly.
But will the ferocity of these contracts undermine even these leaks?
Why don't they just super-encrypt a 'trusted pipeline' in the phone once you unlock the phone you permanently disable the ability of that pipeline to ever operate ever again? I'm all for that. Pump your locked-down content through that pipeline...I don't care if I never open that pipe up ever again.
HTC's gotta come up with something or this is it for all of us I'm sure. I checked out the NexusS4G...nice phone, feels cheap but then again maybe I'm just used to lugging around this monster sized and weighted Evo. Screen looked nice, bone-stock android was a pleasure to see. Though I'll wait for the Nexus3, or whatever they call it. Sure to be dual core by then....
I guess I'll just get Nexus' for life...this is all bull**** and totally not worth the worry now that I really look at it. They don't want customers 'like us' apparently, Samsung/Google do. 3D is a gimmick anyway. Just give me dual cores and all of the standard features with a 4 point something screen. After the 30fps debacle last year I swore that I wouldn't buy an HTC again...but forgot all about their horrible attitude cuz it got fixed here and they used the code in an OTA. That even gave me faith in them...like the Open Source system is working exactly as intended...but....take and take and take and never give back.....HTC? Never again.

The only reason they may not is because it gives access to DRM information, correct?

Yea, I have never once considered buying a movie/music there. That is what Netflix/Spotify/Grooveshark is far
I would be 100% okay with a second unlock tool that will further unlock but disable access to DRM material on the market

I can see a few reasons where it would make sense.
0.) Maybe they can't officially. I'm not sure where TF101's nvflash stuff comes from but I could see nVidia making it an issue not to just throw it around willy nilly. Who knows, they could be held liable or risk damaging their contracts with suppliers (like nVidia).
1.) If it could "Undo" the unlocker, well d'uh we're not gonna get it in any legit way.
2.) Maybe they're fed up with enough leaks and general issues that they don't care, after all two new models coming on line soon. And I do expect even if ASUS isn't replacing the Prime, stores will replace it with the new budget model and the Infinity.

IF unlocking the boot loader was for rooting(which this could be the case IF fastboot was working), they are basically contradicting themselves. They're saying since the boot loader is unlocked we can now root. The way you root when you unlock the boot loader is by changing ro-secure= from 1 to 0 in default.prop in the boot.img(unsecure boot.img), then flash the unsecure boot.img with fastboot. This gives you a root terminal and adb remount to mount system r/w. This is the proper way to do it.
The guy in that email is full of ****, or has no clue what he's talking about. Most likely both
It makes absolutely NO sense for them to cripple fastboot. Nvflash, I can somewhat see in the eyes of some paper pushing pu$$y, but not fastboot.
maybe someone else should try to email... ;/

[Updated 4.5.12] Operation NVFlash - Asus emailed me back about warranty and NVFlash

So, I emailed Asus because I was confused about how they could completely void our warranty because of an unlock. The part that confuses me is how they can void warranty even for a manufacturer defect or hardware fault when we only modified software. Also, I asked them why, if I warranty is completely void, we do not have access to NVFlash.
Here is the e-mail that I sent to Asus:
Hello,
I have a few questions:
1. If I use the Asus bootloader unlock tool to unlock my Transformer Prime, does it
void every part of the warranty?
2. If it does void every part of the warranty, wouldn't their be issues that would conflict
with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act?
3. If every part of the warranty is not void, what does it void exactly?
4. How come you will allow me to unlock my device and say that my warranty is void
but you will not give me access to NVFlash? I paid for this device. It is MY device. Give
me access to every feature on the device! Especially if you are saying that my
warranty is void!
I am emailing you because all of these questions are of major concern to myself and many others. Thank you for your time.
Here is what I got back from Asus:
Dear Mr. Lyon,
1) As stated for the Unlock tool:
"the Revised Product will no longer be covered under the warranty of the Original Product"
So yes, you void the warranty coverage.
2) No, there is no violation of the act, since it's a consentual agreement when you download and use the Unlock tool. No one is forcing youto unlock it, and you are aware beforehand that using it voids the warranty.
3) Using it voids all warranty coverage.
4) If an application no longer functions after unlocking, like NVFlash, you will need to discuss this with the developer. (NVIDIA)
Sincerely,
Chris A
Asus Customer Care Specialist
So, I wonder if NVFlash is really controlled by NVIDIA or if that is what Asus is saying so that people will bug NVIDIA about it. I know other devices have access to NVFlash but I don't know if any of them were unlocked with an unlock tool from the manufacturer. I just think that it is complete BS that we do not have access to something that could save a lot of us who have voided their warranty.
Anyway... Apparently we need to bug the s***t out of NVIDIA until they 1) make NVFlash available or 2) tell us that Asus has control over it and then we bug Asus for access to it.
UPDATE: Below is an e-mail that I have drafted about getting the SBK for NVFlash. Let me know what you guys think about it. If it looks good, everyone send it to Asus. If I missed something or need to correct something, please let me know. I am not a developer so I don't know exactly what is needed.
UPDATE2: I have been tweeting this to them twice a day and we need as many people as possible to tweet and post this on their Facebook and anywhere else they else they will see it.
@ASUS, still no word about NVFlash on the TF201!? Give complete unlock if you are going to void the complete warranty! #HalfassedUnlockTool
The problem is not that nvflash is *incompatible*, the problem is that we need specific information from ASUS to get nvflash working. This has nothing to do with nVidia

That is what I thought but wasn't sure if I was correct. What do we need from Asus to get NVFlash working? I am going to bug the S**T out of them until we get it. If I'm voiding my warranty to unlock this SOB, they better give me full access to everything.
Also, it seems to me that they are voiding the complete warranty because they know people in the dev community are most likely to return for all the issues like BT+Wifi, Wifi signal and GPS and we are also the most likely to unlock, in turn voiding our warranty.

Contact Gary Key, the Asus rep on this board.
We need the secure boot key(sbk) to get nvflash to work.
Nvidia supplied the version that supports tegra 3, Asus blocked functionality (all) to nvflash.
I'm pretty sure if they completely 100% unlock the boot loader nvflash could work without it, but I could be way off here.

Yeah, we should get something like a template and everybody sends to asus a nice email.
I think we should focus on the "if you're voiding my warranty because of a unlocker tool, i want full access to my device since asus don't support unlocked devices" part.
they should learn more from google and maguro.
I'm up for this as well but lack the technical expertise, however I do enjoy dealing with customer service reps

I personally think its crap considering they void your hardware warranty, my prime is screwed with a Defective Micro SD slot. I don't see HOW unlocking a boot loader affects the slot. My SD card doesn't click into the lock, no custom software caused this. Its a common problem also, Ive seen plenty of other people complaining about broken SD slots. I have not tried to contact asus yet, I figure there's probably no way to restore to factory boot loader state, and I'm pretty sure that unlock tool blacklist your serial.

If I had to take a guess, someone in middle management was taking alot of heat for the prime and made a bad decision. "Look boss, now our losses are this much lower!"
The decision doesn't really make much sense to me, so I can only ASSUME it was a shortsided decision because someones career was on the line.
Edit: letter seems fine, but I doubt they care anymore. I feel like we have been written off. Its OK, I have squaretrade warranty and if this thing breaks I will get a Samsung tablet. Possibly Motorola if they get their act together. I am actually happy with my prime and its limitations, but I have also written Asus off which is too bad considering they were in my top 5 company list.

Why would anyone knowingly void their warranty on a defective product. If anyone were foolish enough to do that, well then, what can I say.

Unlocking Z2 bootloader: What do you loose?

Morning All,
I will be picking up my Z2 tomorrow afternoon and I would just like to know what I will lose should I unlock the bootloader? I understand the DRM keys will be destroyed but what functionality will I lose? If I stream Netflix & Youtube they will still work right? What are the drm keys four? The only thing I can see losing out on is the Micheal Jackson album which won't be missed at all. Since I am getting the health band "free" will that still work with a unlocked bootloader? This will be my first Sony Android device so I really have no idea what I am in for.

Unless the devs find a solution you also lose Miracast/Screen-mirroring (because of the DRM keys). This should be mentioned more often, because it isn't so obvious.

This doesn't sound like a scam at all.
+1 with Envious_Data, if a solution comes out, it will probably come from here (I hope so) :
