[Q] Is it using WiFi? - 7 Mozart General

Hello All,
got a question that I did not found in the forum, hence the new thread.
If WiFi is turned on, does HTC7 automatically use WiFi instead of Radio for Browsing and Mail Update?
Got the impression that WiFi is ignored when surfing.
Any way to tell?
Thanks and Regards,
Florian

Wifi will be used instead of data connection when it is turned on. This is the case for all mobile phones of all operating systems. For me, the most noticeable sign that it is using Wifi is that browsing becomes faster.

Thanks for the answer. When using WiFi in my home (currently the only WiFi available) then browsing isn't really faster, since I've only got 486kb/s downstream... ;-)

No problem! I guess you're better off using data connection. But it is also better since Wifi usually consumes more battery than 3G does

microsoft ok but cheap is cheap
basically all the devices i know will connect to WI-fi why? because it is already payed and the speed basically should be higher

[Q] boosting Wi-Fi performance

hi.
Since I do not have any data plan, I pretty much depend on open W-Fi network to get a connection, which are often far away so I get a poor signal.
I have noticed my phone can't handle a poor Wi-Fi connection as good as an iPhone / iPod can. When I place my phone and my friend's iPhone close to each other and connect both of them to the same, distant network, the iPhone would get a slow but stable connection while my phone would frequently lose connection to the router. My phone also would not connect to some distant network at all while the iPhone can connect to them.
Is there any way to make the Wi-Fi work better? Maybe some hardware fix similar to the GPS hardware fix, or perhaps some system files I can change so the phone would not "give up" so fast if the network connection is poor?
Thanks a lot.

Very creative solution although I use the Wi-Fi only when theres no one around to talk with, for example when I am at a bus stop or during a (very) boring class.

Battery Savers Discuss

this thread is to discuss (battery saveing) programs ... every one feed back us with the program that he uses and its advantages - disadvantages and how it is effevtive ...
for me .. I wasnt using any of them ... in the last days ... I've been using ( antutu battery saver PRO ) .... it is very good in his work ,,, however , it controls the CPU ( it needs root ) .. so .. some times we can feel that it affect the phone speed
I use Tasker to control my radios and that helps some. What's helped most for me is switching to ICS as my screen off time is stellar.

Actually, as long as WiFi is connected to an access point, that is the easiest on the battery. It is better than trying to connect to a tower a mile or more away for mobile data or 4g. If WiFi is not connected, it is best to turn it off since it will keep trying to connect and will connect to any open access points.
For battery life, Wifi is best, 3g is middle, and 4g eats battery.

Better for Battery Life: Wifi or HSDPA

Hi all, Blue here,
I am using a slightly modified rom made bsaed on the hktw rom made by a local. I am just wondering if wifi or data takes more battery generally?

2g<wifi<3g<4g for battery drain, or at least that's what i've found from my side, with 2 g taking up the least battery, and 3g/4g taking up the most.

On the Droid Razr (and infact any Android device) wifi uses MUCH less power and resources than HSDPA/3G+ services. The reason being that the gain needed on the radios part to receive a packet via wifi is (generally) much less than over a cellular connection, due to the quality of the signal being much higher. It hasn't got to work as hard to get a good set of packets to work with. Your phone will be working like a mad thing trying to buffer a YouTube video on HSDPA - dealing with massive packet loss and syphoning the 'good' data from the 'bad' data - whereas on wifi with much less packet loss and a higher rate of that 'good' data being received, it can relax a little.
My advice on battery life - download a data "toggle" widget and place it on an unused home screen. Whenever you are not using any mobile data services turn it off using this widget. Leave wifi on only when at home/a location where you know you will be able to use it. Turn it off when you go out. When you want to use mobile data when wifi is not available, just toggle it on. I get 3+ days of always-on use using this method.

Thanks guys, coz I notice that it seems like when I am using wifi, the batter goes faster. Maybe it's because when I am connected to wifi I use it more often? Thanks again

It could well be. Or if you have applications that are configured to only sync/update when on wifi, this will naturally put your phone to more use than if say you only used 3G/HSDPA for checking email.

When you say you have compared them with 3G , it means the phone's data sync causing this problem is out of question. As in both cases ( wifi and 3G) the phone would connect to data based on the set intervals.
Possible cause: if you have multiple wifi sources near your devices and you have granted them access, here your phone constantly tries to connect to the best available wifi . If this is true , just use wifi managers available on Play store or remove access to unwanted wifi routers/access points.

[Q] Wifi settings for min. battery consumption

Hi,
I was trying to search but didn't find a conclusive answer.
Which option is better in terms of battery consumption, especially during the night:
1. Turn off wifi and use cellular data.
2. wifi + Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep set to "Never".
3. wifi + Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep set to "Only when connected".
4. wifi + Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep set to "Always".
Thanks in advance!

You have sort of answered your own question... for Minimal battery consumption set it to 2 (Never). I would recommend just sticking to 3 which is better for overall use or just toggling your Wifi yourself.

Thank you for your answer.
But isn't setting it to 2 during night is the same as turning wifi off and use cellular data instead?
So does it mean that cellular data is better in terms of battery?
And why 3 is better for overall use?
Lets assume that cellular data is free of charge for this matter, and my only concern is battery.

Listen to Coreym and set it to 2 all the time, wifi uses way less batterylife than 3G mate. 3G sucks the life out of your battery. Just try it and you will see
what about using only 2G instead of 3G? How it is compared to WiFi usage?

Sure and while you`re at it disable 3 cores permanently, lower brightness to 0 and don`t ever use your phone for better batterytime, 2G will consume more power as it is slower and so it takes longer to retreive data.

Just looked in my own settings and i have option 3 checked: wifi on Always. It also depends on the user, do you use wifi a lot or just once in a while. The best thing to do is try a few settings for yourself and see which setings consumes the least amount of battery.
Settings WiFi on always .
WiFi / mobile data not in use or not required = turned off via toggles .
jje
But I do want data during the night - for example for whatsapp, emails and so on. So turning both off is not an option for me.
- On one hand, people here say to set wifi, but "never" during sleep. But that means to use only 3g during the night, doesn't it? Or I'm missing something here?
- On the other hand, 3G costs more than wifi in terms of battery.
So I don't understand how these two go together.
I have set to "Always" so the device have not to reconnect when unlocking screen, what drains battery imho.
But in the night I set flight mode on cause I want and need to sleep and don't need new SMS or Whatsapp or calls

Can someone clarify this for me please?
3g doesn't cost more in terms of battery so long as you have a very good signal. If you don't or if for some reason the network has a problem then it will drain the battery.
What I recently started using is a program called ds battery saver which toggles wifi or 3g periodically depending on what you set it up for so that you do get night time data but not on all the time. That helps with battery

[Q] WIFI Tether Slow in ICS

I am running ICS in a Thunderbolt with radios 2.02.00.1117r (CDAM) & 0.02.02.1211r (LTE) and Build number 7.02.605.06 710RD (debloated rooted ICS official ROM). I noticed that the Wifi Tether is working extremely slow (Download:1.5mbps) however when doing a speedtest from the phone it is very fast (Download: 20mbps-26mbps)
I tried several combination of other ROMS and different radios (all of them) and Wifi Tether is behaving the same way.
Anyone having the same problem? If so, how did you solve it?
Wifi Tether is running with the following settings:
Device-Profiel: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Wifi driver reload: Checked
MSS Clamping: Checked
Routing Fix: Checked
Disable Wake-Lock: checked
Any help will be appreciated.
Disable mss clamping and change the device profile to rezound. Those are the settings I use and it never goes that slow. Speed tests also aren't very reliable sources of information. They will give you different results every time.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Stop doing a speed test. The results are probably false. Unless you have the WiFi power consumption setup to use less power on your tablet.

Thanks. However when i do my speedtest in a wifi fios service i get consistent speeds of 88 mbps to the same server on the same tablet under the same conditions.
Stopping speedtest is NOT a valid response.
Any more suggestions from anyone else?

So you're saying that when you speed test the tablet using fios powered wifi you get 88mbps and you expect the phone to tether at exactly the same speed. The reason I'm telling you to stop speed testing from your tablet when connected to the phone tether is because the speed test can't tell just how fast the speed between the phone and tether is. You'll never get a consistent result because of that. Also, the tether isn't going to come even close to what you can get at fios and I can see why it seems so slow compared to that. I tether my phone to my tablet everyday and I always get equal download speeds using real tests such as downloading a large file. Not by speed testing the connection.

I think you did not understand my posting. I test speeds IN THE PHONE and they are about 18mbps, however when tethering and web browsing, the tablet is very slow. Speedtest in the tablet is less than 1mbps. Difficult to watch netflix on my tablet with that connection.

I know your speed test ON THE PHONE is up to 20. WHAT I'M TELLING YOU IS THAT THE SPEED YOUR TABLET TESTS AT AFTER TETHERING TO YOUR PHONE MAY NOT REPORT TO SPEEDTEST CORRECTLY. Did you gather what I'm trying to tell you now?

---------- Post added at 02:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:44 PM ----------
Example: When I use WiFi with my ps3 and test the connection I get 12 down and 1.5 up everytime. Once I tether even over 4g it shows 1.5 down and doesn't show anything for up usually. It get on average 30-35 down with 4g in my area and 18up on a good day. I will test this tonight with my tablet and screen shot the results for you so you can see that speedtest isn't accurate on the secondary connection.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I've seen the same and can confirm the speeds should be equal. Tethering should pass thru whatever speed it's getting regardless of what you're sharing your bandwith with.
Have you tried testing from any other devices?
