Is it normal for Flash to drain the battery? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Sorry if this is a total noob question, but I'm pretty new to the tablet scene.
Just finished watching an NHL game on the tablet in its entirety with flash video. Before the game, my prime was at 100% and after it was at 65%. Is this normal.
I should mention I didn't know to do the 8 hour precharge when I first got it. Really hoping I didn't muck up my battery because of this......

Yes, streaming video from the net to the prime can drain the battery at a faster rate. since its being Software decoded/processed going into the prime. your best bet is to watch streams in power savings mode. battery will last the longest in that mode streaming movies. it'll play the video fine still with no issues.

And especially Flash is super battery hungry, one of the reasons why Adobe discontinued Flash for mobile platforms...

For sure it's normal. Flash is a power-hungry hog on all platforms.

charging?

does anyone leave their tablet plugged in all the time? everywhere leads to mixed reviews about how this effects battery life.
any ideas?
Whenever I'm not using it, it's on the dock, getting juiced, so yes, I charge it all the time. I figure by the time it has lasting effects on the battery, I'll probably have a new tablet anyway, with a Tegra 6, Android 5.8, that plays games for me.

[Q] Battery life with CM7 on the NT

There's been mixed reviews of battery life in the CM7 rom for the NT as far as battery life is concerned, some are saying they've run it with moderate use since the day it was released and only used about 20 - 30% so far while others are saying battery life is terrible.
SO I thought I'd start a little poll to see what people are getting, I'm guess the battery drain is due to various software being installed so not really the OS's fault.
For me the Battery life is greatly improved over stock, for instance I took it of charge 10 hours ago, it's admittedly only been used for a few minute son and of during those 10 hours but it's lost the grand total of 4% battery in those 10 hours which I consider pretty good really.
Soi lets here what everyone thinks, remember to vote !
Battery life - improved
This is my third day on the CM7 alpha - battery life has been much better than before. Considering I have probably spent more time with the NT turned on over the last couple of days than I normally would, the battery used is less than normal. Previously I would use about 60% of my battery per day. Now I am using 30%-40% - and that includes downloading and configuring many, many applications.
I really think its much better than stock in my cm7 nt
No problems here. Take off charge around 6am and return to charge around 10pm with usually more than 80% left depending on usage.
Sent from my Droid Incredible ICS 4.0.3
I don't think mine has been on a charger for the last 16 hours or so, light usage, wireless has been off most of the time, and I use a task killer to kill things before I turn off the screen. Didn't power off, just put to sleep last night before bed, it's still at like 85%.
So far, it seems better than stock battery life to me, or at least no worse, and I have a lot more apps installed now.
Edit: Internal version.
It might help if folks said if they were running off SD card or internal memory when looking at battery life - I have the impression that the SD card reader on the NT is something of a battery vampire.
Internal CM7 since it was released.
Live wallpaper on Golauncher
wifi set to screen off-off
Brightness at about 60-65%
It's been off of charge for 4 hours 21 minutes this morning and I'm at 96%
Dolphin HD and Gmail have been running all that time.
Hasn't been out for long enough to really tell but my impression is that it's about the same as stock.

Odd. Is that your aforementioned case with lots of standby? On my Vibrant, the Screen bar generally dwarfs all other bars even with significant standby time. Granted that's an apples-to-oranges comparison... (I don't have CM7 on my Nook Tablet yet - can't do a comparison between stock B&N and my Vibrant at the moment.)

Yes. I don't really know what "standby" means. This use was about 40 minutes of checking email, weather news and etc followed by About 2 hours with the screen off then an hour of dinking around. Watched all the superbowl commercials, staying up on XDA and other forums with Tapatalk and learning things in CM7. I'd describe this as light use bordering on moderate.

Watching video or playing games can be quite intensive. Flash is probably the most intensive for video playing.
Keep a good eye in it over the next few days then cone back and post if you've noticed anything that makes it better or worse with battery life
Last I checked mine was going on 18 hours and at about 40%
One thing I noticed is that the charger for my Moto phone doesn't seem to charge the nook as well as the nook charger. I'll have to look at the nook wall wart and see if it's pumping out more juice. For reference the Moto charger is only 4.33W (5.1V at 850mA).
The nook charger is a 1.8amp charger

What kind of usage? Low, high, moderate? Just curious because my wife and I do a decent amount of Netflix (1-2 hours a day) and I don't have to charge more than every 3 days. This is with 1.4.0 rooted. I've been exceptionally pleased with that - power consumption in standby seems to be incredibly miserly with stock (most likely due to WiFi being turned off when the system is in standby).

Ahh. That explains a lot. Looks like I should pack that in my bag rather than my Moto charger. I wonder if it'll charge my phone faster?
On the subject of the battery, I posted about an issue I encountered last night, here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22261812
Additional information: At the time, I was fooling around with a playstation emulator, which i'm fairly sure constitutes a heavy drain on system resources. Battery drain seemed appropriate for the level of activity.

Internal install, wifi off during sleep. Figure the end of the graph was about 19-20 hours or so of sleep. Before that was a constant internet, twitter, WWF session. Screen brightness is in the bottom 1/3rd of the slider.
I am going to beat the hell out of it tonight and will see how the battery holds up. Looks pretty solid just sleeping, so we will see what it can do under load.
So found that if your wireless location is turned on, it will wake your NT about every 5 minuetes. That's not a good thing
If anyone is seeing drains, i suggest using betterbatterystats to help track down the culprit.

So Im getting horrible battery life with this now. Not really sure whats going on. I use to be able to leave my nook on standby for days and last night it was at about 30% woke up this morning and it was completely dead...

[Q] Question about battery life for prime

Hi
I have a question regarding the battery life on the prime.
ASUS advertise up to 12 hours on their website...
I'd expect to get at least half that with normal use..
How long does your battery life last with normal use?
Like ebook/pdf reading, some browsing, some youtubing and maybe some
light gaming?
I dont have much running on mine, i always try to kill backround processes.
I always have it on low brightness and turn the wifi off when not in use.
I usually dont make it much longer that 4 hours with light use... maybe 5 hours.
I use mine mostly for pdf/ebook reading. A little browsing/youtubing here
and there...
Is this normal or do I have a defective unit that I should replace?
Other than this I have no problems with the prime.

My wife and I get about 8 hours heavy use. Video, nook & browsing.
With similar/more usage than what you describe, I get much more than advertised...at 70% right now on performance mode at 7 hours at full brightness with wifi never sleeping. Keep in mind their 12 hours was playing video the whole time. I'm ridiculously impressed so far.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA
I can't tell you exactly how much I get, because I never got down to under 20%. To be honest I mostly use it with the dock, watching video and browsing outisde (+IPS) on never ran into battery issues after 2-4 hours.
So I never every until now worried about the battery, it was just there.
it really does last quite well, im used to charging my phone up every night and i cant get this thing to drain quickly, i wanted to do some full drain cycles on the battery and it actually took hours and hours to empty it.
you wont be disappointed!
Honestly, coming from an Apple employee, it kicks the iPad's ass not only at battery life, but at charging too. This thing charges in just about the same time it takes to charge an iPhone.
Wow.. 8+ hours... I dont see that happening on my unit.
I think ill try a factory reset and if that doesnt help
I think i'll have to return it for a new one.
Thanks everybody for your comments
I get about 16 to 1 day and 6 hours with the dock (That's using it very wildly, meaning not sparingly).
I surf alot, watch videos, play games, test settings.
I use IPS+ sometimes only but most of the time I have my brightness level on about 70%
Cheers!
Well, just did a factory reset, down 6% already after ~25minutes.
I think i'll see if the store will let me return it because of
unsatisfactory battery life
I get like 6 hours on screen time generally....pretty bad. Probably a lot of bugs to work out with the tegra 3 still, hopefully Asus is working on it. I do not even do anything that intensive, just web browsing, chatting, taking notes, don't even watch videos or play games too often. Battery life would probably plummet if I played games.

With the screen on?
Could you possibly take a screenshot of the battery statistics?
I would really appreciate it so i could have something to compare to.
Or even anybody with similar results on their prime?
16,5 hours since charged, and i've got
2h40m Screentime
3h24m WIFI on
61% charged
Usage: Watching a movie, surfing, playing around with the system;-)
Fully charged at 1pm yesterday, after flashing Primulous from cwm touch, i have been benchmarking, browsing, took about 10 min of 1080p video, running wifi analyzers to configure repeater in my house, left on overnight, on balanced mode. Woke up at 5am, have been youtubing, browsing. Its 8:30 and battery just hit 20%
I AM IMPRESSED to say the least, battery life is so good due to running "minimal" when flashing Primulous, wasn't quite this good when on stock, with bloated apps
I have just about every tab on the market in the past 2 years. iPad, iPad2, Transformer w/dock, Acer, HTC Flyer, Kindle Fire, Galaxy tab 7, galaxy tab 10.1 and now the Prime w/dock. The Prime battery outlasts all of them except the gTab for me. I get about 2 days between charges prior to the dock and about 3 with the dock. Stats right now are at 70% tablet 92% dock with 10h 36m on batter and 2 hours of screen on.
With WiFi running at 10h and taking up 81%of the battery. I switched it off this morning to see if I get an improvement since I dont use it and I definitely see a HUGE improvement.
I've always had issues with leaving my WiFi on connected all the time. Lasts about 4-6 hours with WiFi on all the time. Now that I have it on JUST when the screen is on, it lasts about the good 6-9 hours. Anyone having this issue too?

With web browsing, ebook reading, and some YouTube I get 12-14 hours when my screen is set to "power saver" performance mode and with the screen at about 25% brightness. If I have the Prime plugged into the keyboard dock I get 15-18 hours depending on what I am doing.
First thing. Don't kill background tasks. Unless your Prime is seriously suffering performance issues you should ignore any background task that is running. Compulsively killing tasks will actually drain your battery faster. Do you have a lot of apps syncing? Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc? If so turn off the ones you don't use often or at least set them to update no faster than once an hour. Also, set the WiFi to turn off when the screen is off, this will improve standy battery significantly.
If you keep getting battery drain, before you return the Prime do a factory reset and see if that solves the battery drain. There could be some system process that isn't ending correctly and keeping the Prime awake. Factory resets are wonders at solving this kind of glitch.

Battery Life

I am seriously thinking about returning my Sony Tablet S.
I can't seem to get more than 3 hours out of this without a charge.
I play a full movie with wifi/GPS on and then i am down to 30%.
I do have it rooted and most of the bloat apps is gone. I check the battery indicator constantly and the biggest app using battery seems to be android so nothing is zapping my battery life.
Any ideas?
I think something is wrong with you're tablet, mine lasts for more then 8 hours without root.
So yes, return it and ask for a replacement.

Try and adjust the backlight intensity
When I first used my tablet the battery seemed to be gone in no time. I have found that reducing the backlight manually has helped. I would say there was a definite difference.
Thanks for all the responses.
Problem is this is for my kid. He don't really have the patience to wait for charges every day.
He like to watch movies on the tablet and play some games here and there. Considering he only use it for 3-4 hours a day, this is insane how short the battery is.
I thought i will never say this...but another android guy bite the dust and cross over to the evil apple kingdom (exchanging for the ipad2 with 10 hour battery life).

so we've all told you that it doesn't sound normal and that you should get much longer out of the device and your answer is "it must be android" rather than a faulty device.......
8 hours to 10 hours on mine, depending on what i do. with and without root, it doesn't change my battery life.
Mine about 8 hours
Had the same issue in the past... Delete all on USB and make a factory reset solved the problem. Now it run up to 8 hours.

Same issue and fix here.
I have decent battery life ( 6+ hours) but one thing that makes me wonder is the idle time.
5 hours of screen time is less power consuming than the tablet being 20 hours in idle. Has anyone the same experience?
Yes. In my case it's the 3G modem. Turn it off generally and only on when you use it.
If I compare this case with my iPad I have to say, that the 3G modem in the sony uses much more energy in idle than in my iPad.
My Tablet is WiFi-only. And WiFi shuts down when the screen goes off.
Battery use:
Tablet idle ------------ 49% --> 15h 8m 57s
Screen---------------- 37% --> 4h 56m 31s
Is this strange behaviour or am I just paranoid since this is a totally different battery usage than on a phone( e.g Sensation)?

Its using a lot of battery in sleep mode. But sometimes it doesn't, sometimes sleep mode last way longer but most of the time its about 25-30 hours in sleep mode and that is way too much...
I hope ICS will fix this, if not i may return mine.

Yes. That's what I mean.

Hmm. You do realise playing videos and having the wifi on in the background will cane the battery? Even more so if you're streaming said videos to your device via wifi. No doubt you've got the screen turned up full brightness as well?
Mine runs perfectly well and can last for a couple DAYS between charges, depending of course on how I use it.
Follow the tips provided by the others, you might get a fix. If not, get a new one from Sony. It's not a problem with Android - I suspect if you watch hours and hours of movies on an iPad you will still experience excessive battery drain because of the intensive nature of what you're doing!
Thanks for all the suggestions. If the tablet is for me to use daily, I probably would have condition the battery, try to delete all and then restart. However, it is for my kid and frankly it is unacceptable that a brand new tablet after watching one movie (just regular mp4 file i installed into the internal SD) is down to 30% charge.
I won't even start with the rest of the things i am disappointed with; the missing 6 gigs on the 16 gig, the screen little darker than i wanted (the screen protector I don't like at all), and frankly honeycomb in general is not that crispy and well developed.
I did end up getting a Ipad 2. After watching 1 movie, the thing still got 80% juice left....is night and day. Screen is sharper and brighter and most importantly it last more than a day without charge.
I don't want to hype about ipad here and i am still an android fan (i got 2 android phones), but the ipad really is WOW compared to the current corp of android tablets. Yes i am disappointed i won't be able to "tweak" the ipad like i can with droid pads, but Apple OS is so much better developed than honeycomb or ICS for that matter that really you can live without the tweaking.
For all you guys, with Wi-fi only (and 3G if you like the solution), before putting it to sleep put the device in flight mode. I've done it on mine and it was asleep for 4 days while I went out on a journey and when I came back only 30% of battery was gone...
I honestly can only fault the ipad in the sense that a media device, that for all intensive purposes is basically a more convenient option than a laptop, does not have flash support. Quick web browsing on tablets is great but it's useless without flash :S. Damn apple. Other than that I think the iPad is pretty great, especially now that the pricing for the new iPad has become alot sharper than in the price. Obviously to combat the success of Android tablets of late. But all I want out of a tablet is a bit of web browsing here and there, a couple games now and then and a nice digital photo frame to boot
I don't know about everyone else, but I have no desire to flash the crap out of my Sony tablet like I do with my SGS2. Now that I have root access it's doing everything I wanted it to do (and should have done!) from the start. So long is it's stable and responsive I'll be happy with it for a few years at least.
I was never happy with my tablet from day one but for me it was just software - sluggish and app incompatibility - a factory reset and root has fixed all that now. Never once have I had an issue with battery life. Sure as hell out-does any gameboy/ds/psp I've owned. Standby will last weeks if I don't touch it too.
So to those of you getting around 1-2 days standby time, something is seriously wrong with your tablet. There must either be a fault with your battery itself, or some app has gone rogue and just keeps it awake the whole time. i dont think any type of conditioning your battery will heed any results;
I didn't condition my battery at all when I got it and it's just fine. I played it with the 5% charge it had out of box till it died, got home, charged a bit, played with it till it shut off again, then when it got about 1/2 full just took it off charge and played with it again. Now it normally gets charged every friday whether it needs it or not.

The battery life of your Prime

Please post bettery life and please specify the time of the screen on (in Battery settings).
My Prime works about 48 Hours. Screen on about 5 hours.
Screen Backlight about 50% during 2 hours and minimum during 3 hours.
1 Hourse I read. and 4 Hours internet with Google Chrome beta.
What browser eat more power?
i'm really sorry for this but:
hour = 60 minutes of time
horse = the thing you ride or eat
hourse = NO.
On topic: battery life is fine on mine. Really depending on what i do with it. I wrote an essay today with my prime. Constantly writing for 4h with screen on at half brightness, went down to 75%. If i was gaming the whole time it would be down to 30% or something i guess So it all depends on what you do. I think battery is great especially with the dock.
Sorry for my English)))
And what you thing about browser? What browser eat more power?
hm i never tested between browsers, i always use ICS+ browser as it has everything i expect from a browser.
I heard the new firefox is quite good though^^
I've actually been pretty disappointed in my Primes battery life. I had it in the second week that it was out, and I'd almost always get 10-11 hours out of it with the dock.
My usage scenario is usually, a lot of down time, very little video watching and a lot of web surfing/email use and I almost never play games. I've noticed more recently that my battery %'age drops by nearly 10% every half hour. I always have the dock on and if I'm lucky I get around 7-8 hours of use out of it.
Luckily I've never needed it that long in one go, so I've never really needed to carry that cheap quality charger that ASUS provides that's practically fallen apart, even after I took exceptional care of it.
The only saving grace I've had recently with the whole thing is Androwook 2.0; and it is just plain exceptional! No force closes and very very few freezes. Absolutely silky smooth. I was considering selling it before the new tablets came out but this ROM is seriously making me consider keeping this tablet.

Watching Video and Playing actually uses less power than Web Surfing, dont ask me why ^^.
The WiFi is a blackhole of power and eats the battery like theres no tomorrow.
I use my TP for golf GPS in my cart with the dongle, wifi tethered to my phone and the screen always on, brightest setting and I get about 5 hours (maybe a few minutes less) of use before it goes dead.
Wish there was a way to plug the TP in when using the GPS dongle.

True, but I hardly watch any video online at all. Like no Netflix or YouTube...
Infact even the pages I read are usually mostly text, hardly a couple images, and my brightness is in the lower quarter all the time. I usually just open a page and leave it open and use it as a reference while I type on my laptop, or writing or whatever...
It's a bit annoying when my Primes battery % declines at almost the same rate my as power hungry laptop's battery...
I don't think this is for the Prime or ICS:

Does not matter what you are doing in internet as long as that WiFi is on, and transferring some data it will destroy the battery. Try it out without WiFi and see how long it lasts.
