Question for thunderbolt users - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have a charge and I can trade it to my wife for her thunderbolt plus her upgrade. I won't be able to afford to use the upgrade for a while so I'm wondering if you would recommend the thunderbolt over a charge? I'll be stuck with it for at least a couple months. How is development? Specifically ics as I don't believe it will be long until the charge has it.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk

are you unhappy with the Charge? what makes you want to switch?
I've never used a Charge but I love love love my rooted Bolt. Development seems to have slowed a bit lately, but there's so many really polished and stable ROMs available that you could probably fill up a few months just messing with what's already out.

I'm not really unhappy with my charge. My wife is unhappy with her bolt and wants my charge. I believe I would be happy with a rooted bolt though. I haven't done a lot of research yet though so I just wanted to get a feel for it. I've researched the rooting process on the latest update and that's about it. I think I'm going to go for the bolt though. It will make her happy plus I'll have an upgrade in my pocket for later. Win win I guess lol.

a rooted bolt is very fun to play with.
we have sense 2.1, 3.0 and 3.5 ROMs
AOSP gingerbread
and MIUI
ICS is basically as far as it can go besides the camera and radio. which will probably get fixed once another Verizon LTE HTC phone gets ICS (probably a new one or the Rezound) fun to play with but far from a functional ROM.
IMO, the Tbolt is faster and has a much larger developer community than the Charge has. its a great phone, and will keep you happy for a couple months until your upgrade.

Cool thanks for the info. I think we'll swap tonight and I'll get started with the modding. Any rom recommendations? I think I'd like to start off with a sense rom because I've never had an htc device.

I just rooted my bolt and currently running
[ROM-STOCK-605.9] iKReaM.What.Thee.ROM.605.9-R3Ds
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409703
and its running great. Take the bolt and let her have the charge

It's a great phone for a geek
While I wouldn't recommend it for a casual user, with custom roms and it's very active dev community, much more than the charge it's a great phone
and with custom roms you can even work around a lot of the battery woes that come with owning this phone.

I think the bolt is more my style then. My wife is as casual as casual gets. She had an iphone before her bolt. I've been rooting and roming since the d1 not to mention the custom os's I ran on my curve. I'm ready to dig into the bolt now and give her my charge.

If it makes the wife happy, it'll make you happy That said, the 'Bolt is a fine choice and I'd have to dig up the threads but it seemed like a lot of people preferred it to the Charge and Revolution when they first came out.

Plop I love the bolt came decide niyo or cm7 so I switch around everymonthish (well more like twice a week lol)

I can see where the bolt would be frustrating for a pretty casual user - if my wife tried to use my phone with the stock software like she uses her iPhone, the battery would be dead in three, four hours
definitely make the trade - worst comes to worst, you can get a new phone for her with the upgrade, and go back to the Charge if you were happy with it

Well I have a rooted tbolt and I love it... Happy I made the switch. Time for bed so I can play some more tomorrow. Thanks for the input everyone.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk

gotta go with the bolt. just go on amazon and get the wall charger with 2 extra 1700mh batteries they outlast the stock by a couple hours. With 3 batteries in rotation i am never worried about it dying.

Well I've been setting my thunderbolt up and so far I've had no luck with any tethering apps. Is there any certain I've that works best and what settings should I use?

An Unrooted Thunderbolt -- still a great experience?

With all of this going down recently about Rooted users being cracked upon, I want to make sure my next phone does not require root in order to improve it significantly. (Unlike my Fascinate which is a great phone, only after the developers have worked on issues).
How is the unrooted TB experience?
I didn't root my TB for about 3 days and I came from a rooted DX. It feels faster and smoother than a DX with the OE rom over clocked and is just as snappy as the blur-less rom i was running also. I was pleasantly surprised by the out of the box experienced of the TB and I am an ASOP experienced fan.
I was in no rush to root my phone. I only did it out of habit and was curious. I loved my phone when I first got it. Obviously rooting made me love it more but still a great experience. Nothing was broken or slow. Smoothest screen transition I've seen on a phone. I don't even mind HTC Sense (still prefer ASOP, but miles better than TouchWiz and Blur).
Mine is rooted and I don't think it's currently needed. The ROMs that are currently out aren't the coolest (meaning bug free and full featured) IMO. I did it for the freedom when a really good ROM/kernel is out.

I agree, even the gingerbread Blur isn't as good as this. I my self noticed that the Bloated up OEM rom was just as fast for me as the De-bloats also
I need to get me some popcorn
Is there a "crack down"??? Seems to be business as usual.
To me....ThunderBolt is a beast with or without root. I ran it for a week before I rooted it and I though everything I had it and could NOT make it stall.
Tip of the hat to HTC and Verizon (for LTE) for this device in my hands. Best Android experience I have EVER had... I have had them ALL!!

Yeah the new snapdragon is smooth as silk. Gameing isnt bad eather. Htc phones always seem the most stable!
I agree with everyone above. I came from a DX overclocked @ 1.36ghz and this thing immediately felt faster than my X. I rooted it because I wanted to be ready for the Rubix releases since that's what I was running on the X. Can't say I'm disappointed at all in that decision. Rooted or unrooted the thing is still a beast. The extra 256 megs of ram over the X and the next Gen snapdragon really make the difference. And a decent gpu doesn't hurt the mix either.

The thunderbolt is a great phone un rooted. Faster than a stock Droid x and a tad faster than an oc'd and rom'd dx.
I rooted my thunderbolt because its mine and I hate clutter.
If Verizon would not pack the phones full of junk I probably wouldn't root.
The HTC skins allow the user to get their themes. The launchers give you the feel. The bolt is a good stock phone.
I like plain and simple, functional fast and stable is the best reason to root.
I tan rubix on my dx and running drod and b16 boLTEd now.

I'm loving my un-rooted stock 3G Thunderbolt... it's miles ahead of my last device. I think my head will explode with root and 4G.

Thunderbolt being my first Android phone, I have nothing to compare it to. It kicked ass the day I got it, and it kicks even more ass rooted.
I really don't think there is a critical need to root. I really cant tell the difference between the two in speed except maybe in quadrant scores. Unrooted phone is very fast and smooth.

Root is different than flashing a ROM... There are no rules against rooting, those companies are just trying to stop non-approved software on their networks (even though those rumors are just that, rumors).
Root and freezing apps can't be tracked anyway....

So what's the overall verdict from those of you who are OBJECTIVE about your Thunderbolts? I.E., don't tell me about the personal preference things you like or dislike but overall thoughts on the device itself.
I'm currently using a Galaxy S (Vibrant) that I've had from it's original release date. Other than the crap GPS, I love the device. However, with AT&T's impending takeover of T-Mobile, staying simply isn't an option. Sprint has limited coverage (I travel quite a bit) so that makes Verizon my default option. I don't mind Verizon, and I've had a non-contract MiFi for over a year, it's just price that always pushed me away. Anyway, being a current customer with my MiFi I'm always getting those random spam mail offers via snail mail and the most recent is get a Thunderbolt $249 and unlimited mobile hotspot through May 15th.
I wasn't considering the Thunderbolt until seeing "Unlimited Mobile Hotspot". I currently use close to all 5GB's on my MiFi monthly along with another 3-4 on my Vibrant so data is a HUGE deal to me. I basically have a mobile office so I can eat up some data. Personally, I was holding out for a Dual Core with 768+ MB's of RAM but this definitely entices me. I don't live in an area with LTE, but it's coming, and with the future of mobile data pricing being unknown, I find myself wondering if I should "lock in" prices/features before the market becomes flooded with LTE devices.
Thoughts? Opinions?
My biggest beefs with my Vibrant are:
GPS
Battery Life (SAMOLED makes up for it and I can get 2 days out of a charge if I need to). I view most battery life issues as non-issues. People find themselves with a combo of bloatware and using crap apps that suck the life out of their phones
Lag, even on custom ROM's from time to time
No Camera Flash
How's the speaker phone?
How's Bluetooth strength? Can you stick the TBolt in your pocket and have a conversation without your headset crackling?
More importantly, how accurate is the GPS?

App options mainly. There are plenty of really cool applications that require root access.
The "Crack down" does not exist. It is a bullsh*t lie that some troll posted on here and caused everyone to panic. Root the SOB and enjoy.

Should I buy a thunderbolt?

I love my incredible but am thinking of upgrading. Is the thunderbolt awesome? Are you satisfied with the single core or do you wish you waited for a dual?
I know how fast things get obsolete so do you think the tbolt has what it takes to persist a while inspite of all the dual core 4g's on their way?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I upgraded from incredible. After having the thunderbolt for over a month, I'm glad I did it. Especially when comparing the two phones side by side. It is plenty fast without dual core.
before getting the tbolt i was really concerned if it was worth using a upgrade; would it be the phone i could happily spend the next 2 years with etc. To this day i am still amazed what it can do, and the 4gLTE is insanely fast. I could happily use this phone for the next 2 years. I upgraded from the original droid FWIW.
Same here, I'm happy with my Thunderbolt. It's a beast when rooted and OC'd

I upgraded from the OG as well. I miss my D1 some, but it was my first android device. I am happy with my TBolt. I was concerned that I was buying outdated technology as well, but I knew that I would not be an early adopter of the dual core devices. There will likely be some issues initially and hopefully the kinks will be worked out when I ready to upgrade again. The biggest factor that played into my decision to purchase the TBolt was 4G and the fact that my area will have it by the end of the year. I got to use it a few days while on a business trip and it is blazing fast.

I just got one a couple days ago (wife went with iPhone... eh, I forgive her), I came from a Droid X. Hands down, loving the phone. LTE wont be in my area until summertime, so looking forward to that. Like how much more customized the bolt can be compared to my X. Phone is plenty fast too. Sense isn't too shabby either (least I dont think so) Only downside (Im sure this has been beaten to death) is battery life. I do have the extended battery, but believe mine may be defective (forever to charge, and doesnt ever seem to charge fully). Try the phone out though, 14 days. Doubt you'll take it back though.

Creating themes was much easier on the X. Up until I just flashed the stripped Das Bamf I haven't had as good of performance on my TB as my X with Liberty or ApeX, but now thats changed.

[Q] Opinions on the rezound

Tomorrow i'm picking up my Rezound after school, and I have to say I'm stoked!
I've been doing hours of in-depth researching of every aspect of this device and the results are just overall great!
What are your opinions on the Rezound? First post by the way! lol. I'm really excited to get more involved with XDA, any positive feedback or anything would be awesome.
I had to register just so I could reply to this thread
I have had my rezound for five days now, upgraded from a Nexus 1 (Completely stock for 2 years!!! oops ). After about 15 minutes of excitement, I realized it was the same GB I had been using for the last 18+ months. Luckily for me, I had been ghosting this and other forums and had been researching ROM's and ICS for about 2 weeks before I got my phone, so I promptly unlocked, rooted, and flashed Scrosler's ICS 2.3. Best decision I've ever made. Only problem I have noticed is the slight blue flicker (VERY rare, and extremely insignificant.) I LOVE this phone! I even spent all day Monday (and I mean ALL day, I had some major frustrations) trying to flash a new boot animation! I realized Sunday I probably should have tested my Romming skills on my now legacy N1 so I decided to unlock, root, and ROM that too .
To summarize, I just want to thank all the developers, and members who dedicate so much time and effort to make life on our android devices so Fracking AWESOME!
That is great news, thank you for replying! I was doing the same thing! Anyways, I'm really happy about this. I am so thankful for XDA and everyone who Devs and helps in there own way here for all devices. Hopefully, when I gain some experience I will try to dev for the Rezound or some other device! for now I will research and test things by myself! thank you!
Welcome to XDA! Congrats on getting what I, and many others think is the best phone available right now. Most of the people, as you know if you've been reading the threads, are happy to help you out if you need it. Great people here at XDA!
The rezound's my first HTC phone and I LOVE it! My only real complaint is that my stock battery life is terrible but I'm going to pick up a extended battery in a few days anyway. Came from the nexus s to this and I have to say the devs for both devices are incredible for the work that they put into these phones.

Battery doesn't suck. You just don't understand how to get better battery life...many of us are getting 24+ hours on the stock battery.

With CleanROM GBE 1.6.5 and the right settings you can easily get 16 to 24 hours with fairly heavy use. Really very reasonable. Of course you won't get this while it's stock. Or until the new wears off ;-)
I'll be getting picking it up in a few hours, when I do I will purchase the XDA Premium app Can't wait to see what roms are in store for me

I agree, the battery life sucks on the stock battery. The extended battery is awesome IMHO, I have 3 of them.
I stream audio all day at work (either iheart radio or sirius online). The stock battery dies after 4/5 hours doing that, but the 2750 will last all day.
I did root/ROM etc, but I never turn off GPS/DATA etc just to get slightly better battery life. I have 3 email accounts on push etc.
I was one of the ones that was waiting for the Bionic since spring of last year.
I got frustrated around September and picked up a Thunderbolt off craiglist.
That was my first HTC phone.
Since I didn't have any warranty to void I rooted and never looked back.
I was a ROM flashing addict.
When the Galaxy nexus was announced I saw my dream phone, but again the wait was on.
I liked the Rezound but thought I wanted something different.
When the Nexus finaaly came the radio issues scared me off because I was always missing the radio quality of my Droid X and I couldn't see taking any steps backward.
I got the Rezound and realized that this was the phone for me. And since I had procrastinated waiting for the Galaxy Nexus I was able to get it after the $100 price drop.

upgrade now available for me.

I'm coming from a rooted TB, is this a good upgrade?

anything negative, you don't like?
mainly the limitations & omissions that verizon put on the phone. we will get those taken care of shortly.
beyond that. the phone is great for me. coming from a galaxy nexus.
This phone is a beast. Also came from a thunderbolt and rezound. The screen is big, but u should already know that. Thats my only negative which isnt really a negative once u get used to it. Its funny I grabbed my buddies rezound and it felt like I was squinting. I highly recommend.

Ex TB owner here too. Trust me youbwint regret it. I sing then praises of this phone everywhere...way more than I did the bolt. To compare the two would be like saying the bolt is a grilled cheese and the note 2 is a t-bone steak both taste good but one is better for you and more filling. Pull the trigger. And if you used the kickstand on the bolt a lot then grab on of the many cases with a stand. The only thing i miss about the bolt is the ringtones and I downloaded about 2000 ogg files last night to get quality sounds on this phone. No big deal. Easy to root and easy to mod also. Anything else you need to know just ask. I'll be glad to answer questions you may have .
I bought the TB last year when it first came out, and it was a beast (back then) but I hated the battery life. Fast Forward, it's sitting in my Kitchen Drawer as an emergency phone in case the Spouse's SGS3 or my N2 ever flake out and I have to order a replacement. The N2 is night and day different-screen size, speed, battery, OS (obviously), memory, and more. You won't regret jumping UP from the TB to the N2.....just keep the TB around as an emergency spare, because that thing was built to last.
1st day adopter of the Thunderbolt here! Trust me when I say that the note 2 is light years better than the tb. If for nothing more than the MUCH MUCH better battery life, you should pull the trigger.

Had the Thunderbolt then the Galaxy Nexus. No regrets here at all upgrading to the Note2. I got used to the size very quickly. Now when I hold my old Gnexus it just doesnt feel right anymore compared to this. Running stock rooted with a few Mods and love this phone. Id say go for it.

i love this new phone.
If your TB was rooted, why not just pull the ringtones, et al over to the N2? I have several that I managed to drag (kicking and screaming) from phone to phone over the years. My upgrade is due in a few months. Will be getting an N2 unless something better comes along. Despite the amoled screen.

I also just came over to the N2 from the Thunberbolt. I LOVE this phone. I haven't even bothered to root yet, it's just wonderful.
I'm a TBolt user and ordered a N2 1:00am Sunday night (early morning of my upgrade date) . I think I'm really gonna love this device since this will be my second smartphone.
Good Choice!! As someone who once owned the TBolt and then the Charge, Bionic, Razr, GNex, SG3, DNA and now Note 2.. (Not going to list phones I didn't use before the Tbolt ) I can honestly say the Note 2 is the best of the bunch (if you can handle its size)

[Q] Thinking about purchasing a Thunderbolt

I have a droid 3 and wanting to get a thunderbolt to get me by, just wanted to know if anyone has ran into issues with the phone? I know there was many before the ICS update but wanted to know if anyone has had any problems with it since the update?
ICS made it much better but I still don't suggest getting one lol. For a little more you could get a rezound or galaxy nexus.

I didn't want to be the first one to say it haha.
Like disconnecktie said, If you have the option of getting a newer much better phone then take it. Most of us were suckered into this phone either at release or, in my case, joining Verizon.
Each phone has a trade off. At a time the bolt was about the easiest phone to root till they came out with their boot loader updates. The rezound is the phone I have now and over all is a good phone but at times reminds me of my old bolt plus to get s off you have to short out the phone. But s off isn't needed if you load the boot.IMG via your computer and fastboot. The gnex is good if you like to use custom Roms and so on. Its that true Google experience but radio signal can suck. Seems like a hit or miss for this and heard of screen burn in.
With my having the rezound I would say go for the gnex as you will have better access to updates via the gsm version. I wouldn't get the bolt as its old and being the first 4g phone it has issues and the ril is just crap and what kept this phone from being much better on the Dev side.could look at a s3 as those prices are coming down slowly with newer phones coming out. So if you like flashing custom Roms and so on then the gnex is for you. If you want a good all around phone the rezound is for you. I suggest if you can find them play with them first and see which fits you better.
My wife had the d3 and in two weeks got her a d4.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I've had my bolt now for two years. At first it was pretty cool. ICS did make it more stable but we had to wait forever to get it. It is easy to root from the last time I had to root it and I was able to get EXT4 recovery on it (Best recovery in my opinion). There are TON of custom roms out there from GB all the way up to the latest ICS. It's a good phone but I'm getting rid of mine and going over to the GS4 if only because I like new and shiney things and because my Tbolt how has a crack from the lower left to upper right of my screen and the far right side of my screen doesn't react to touch any more.
If you want a phone that's easy to root, recovery and flash on, the Bolt's pretty good. But if you want a really good phone stock, go with the newer ones like the DNA, HTC One, or the SGS4
