Exploring the anatomy of the TFP dock - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

For those who care, this is what the inside of the dock look like.
My first impressions:
(1) Much much much better design than the TF101 dock.
(2) There are booby traps set to catch those who have opened the dock. So, if you're going to open it, be careful. Since I already expected they'd put booby traps, I knew exactly how to avoid them. Phew.
(3) Even the battery has been flattened to compensate for the thinness of the device.
(4) Lots and lots and lots of counterweights this time. Holy cow. I dare say 1/3 of the weight of the dock can be attributed to the counter weights.
(5) Will be hard to add in a hard drive. Or even a ssd. I'll need a few days to plan this out.

Cool thanks for pics.
You are the one who modded the original dock with the hard drive right? Guessing theres no room in this one for that?

Oh, there's room. The problem is essentially the same as the first dock. I spent days working out a puzzle to make everything fit. I just got the dock tonight and opened it just an hour ago or so. Will take me just as long to figure this one out, since this is an entirely different configuration. And this time, I'll probably have to scrape out more plastic than the previous dock.

sweat deal! Love seeing mods like that, good luck!

It's still aluminium though... I don't see how GPS will be any better inside the dock.

I have to be useful for SOMEthing.

Not a mod for me (id just scream "aww **** that" if I opened it and saw that),
but it would be infinitely cool if you could somehow muscle in a rigid storage device.
Good job on the teardown!

This is sweet!!
I wonder what kinda cool mods we can do!

Homemade Stand for Gtab

Ok so I could not wait for a stand and did not want to go put $$ down on something that was not perfect fitting for the Gtab.
I have lots of tools and wood, so here is my 15min $0 Gtab stand.
I used a piece of scrap PERGO flooring from when I did my kitchen that matches the wood on my desk and it has a foam underside built on to it for no scratches.
I have felt pads in the corners where the tablet touches.
Tab sits at a 45 degree angle. I already have ideas for a adjustable version as well that may swivel.
it has my my enjoyment of the gtab better.

You are correct and I stand corrected. it is more of a stand at this point. It could turn into a dock down the road if the one viewsonic makes is not up to my standards I guess.
Thanks for pointing out my mistake, it has been updated.
Very nice, I was thinking about something like this, but much smaller. Something like a kickstand on the device with rubber feet, not sure why they didn't build something in for using with keyboard, but I guess that is what their dock will be for.
Here is my Lego stand. I actually made it for my EVO but the Gtab fits as well.

Ahh the Joy of Legos... I gave my 5 yr. old son, who reminds me he is 12 yrs. old in Lego years, my ZT-180 tablet with a Lexar 32GB USB disk loaded with 19 hours of 'Star Wars the Clone Wars' episodes... and sure enough I found him watching it on the floor while playing Lego with Star Wars characters and he had incorporated the tablet into his 'Command Ship' that he was building...
He used a LOT more pieces to hold his tablet up
I don't know if my son would let me have the lego pieces to build that, I would have to fight him for them!
I saw a video on youtube of a guy using a wooden plate stand, like a tripod. He got it for $10 at some store, probably WM or Target. Submitter was ehunyadi

This is really the best cheap stand... I used to use one when I had my GenTouch.
Mine was black and actually looked really slick... I'm sure you could find a variety at any thrift store. Found mine layin around the house somewhere.
i bought a stand and it just came in. it works nicely and it was only 7 bucks
You can also use a business card holder from an office supply store. The metal mesh ones work good because they do need a slight bend in the top to add stability.

You can also adjust the angle of the tablet by drilling a few more holes in the base closer to the slot. If you dont have the tools for the slot, just glue a strip of wood where the slot is. Simple!
what's point of tablet if you are going to use it like laptop?

Portfolio Style Case to fit Transformer + Dock?

Hey guys I have been searching for a long time now for a folio style case that will fit the transformer WHILE docked. Searching here found me nothing.
I have only EVER found two (on amazon) that fit exactly what i am looking for but they have had mixed reviews.
I was just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like or has any experience with the following cases:
This one has a removable section for the keyboard dock which clips on to the main tablet case (which has its own cover for when not using it with the dock)
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Transformer-KeyBoard-Portfolio-MiniSuit/dp/B005JFIS50/ref=lh_ni_t
This one is a single piece built for use with the dock all the time.

Thanks in advance guys.

Yes and no. without the keyboard in, there is nothing to keep it from sliding out the bottom, but you can hold it. I'll upload a pix when I get home from work showing it if you want. Kind of hard to explain.

Thats why i was leaning more towards the one with the removable part for the keyboard (the first one i linked to).
That way you can use it with and without the keyboard and still be fully covered.
personally i find all these cases aesthetically horrible, i really dont want huge triangular bits of leather on the keyboard corners and the leather around the screen it just makes what is a beautiful tablet look like something out of miami vice!
but maybe thats just me.
LOL i do agree with it taking away from the beauty of the tablet, but im not a fan of sleeves and need something that i can keep on it at all times or whenever i need it. There are so many nicer ones (i.e the official transformer folio, looks smiliar to the ones made for ipads), but they are made for the tablet alone and must be removed to dock it, which sucks.

like i said you cant close the case completely with the dock attached, but when i am out and about i just detach the dock from the tablet and put the whole caboodle in this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Protective-...EC/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1327364719&sr=8-32
Yeah i remember seeing that blurex one and loved it because it doesnt have a bezel it has less noticeable clips which shows off the transformer much better. How is the hold though? how exactly does it work?
But yeah im not a fan of sleeves. so that would be out of the question for me (although it seems like thats the only option sometimes)

Yeah, BULL3TPR00F, I'm in the same boat in terms of what I want.
I'm not sure if its possible though, you'd think at least Asus would have put something together that did the job otherwise (let alone all the custom makers).
I think that blurex looks like it might be the best of average solutions to the problem. One thing I am concerned with is are the clips gonna eventually loosen/break if I'm constantly switching the tab between the dock and case?
bob dylan, do you have an opinion on that?

i very much doubt the clips would break, i dont know what they are made out of but they are sturdy as hell, i cant bend them at all when i press on them or try and twist them( maybe some kind of metal skeleton underneath? dunno). this case is very well made indeed, the clips do not leave any mark on the tablet at all.
---------- Post added at 04:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:30 PM ----------
just to clarify, with the blurex case i dont ever take the case off when using the keyboard dock. the case is fine with the dock as the back of the case just folds up behind the tab when the dock is connected and the keyboard is being used flat on a surface.
the only draw back to this case is that it doesnt close fully when the keboard is attached, you can close the tablet and the dock the usual way you just cant close the case fully. so for me i dont have a scenario where i need to take the case off.
when i want the tablet on its own i just take off the dock
when i want the dock attached i attach it and fold the back of the case up behind the tablet
when i want both and i am out and about i take the dock off and put the cased tablet and dock in a neoprene sleeve.
I ordered the same Minisuit case you linked originally, with the removable dock part.
In theory I think this fits my use case best. I have a toddler, and also toss it in my computer bag, so I wanted it protected/always covered, if it is docked or not.
I do really like the case. Its seems OK quality for $30. Having the ability to undock it and carry around just the tablet is great. I found that I was carrying around both the dock and the tablet often because I was worried about something scratching the screen. So Now, I carry just the tablet around with me much of the time, with the folio case protecting the screen.
Typing with the dock/tablet sitting in my lap is much better with the case on. It makes the base less rounded, so it is less enclined to tilt forward in my lap. Plus the corners of the case raise my wrists up off the keyboard slightly, which makes it feel more comfortable.
The case seems to be a little fiddly though.
The hole for the camera on the back sometimes gets in the way of shots.
It sometimes the tablet doesn't want to connect to the dock without undoing the elastic bands that keep the cover secured to the dock. I've just started leaving those un-done, since even if it connects, it seems to limit the tilt angle. And the elastic strap sometimes covers the charging light on the dock. And that works mostly ok. The snaps on the back sometimes are hard to work as well.
Thanks for the detailed description, you mind uploading some pics from various angles and what you were mentioning about the straps and whatnot.
Thanks!

Before I bought it, I stumbled on this review. Check out the 5th image here (also a decent review, lots of pictures)
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/asus-transformer-accessories/6182-minisuit-folio-case-review-tuff-luv-clone.html
You can see the elastic strap that keeps the underside of the case attached to the dock. Scroll a bit further down, and you can see the picture of the two attached together. The reviewer didn't seem to have any problems with the straps. I can make it work ok with them on, but it just seems to make docking a bit harder...and it definitely seems that they get pinched when reclining the screen back fully.
But they're not really needed. If you have the two pieces snapped together, the snaps hold the base piece in place. Really what the straps do is to keep the case from falling off the dock when the transformer isn't docked. And you could put the straps back on in that case...
Cool thanks
I own a real Tuff-Luv case and really like it. Worth what I paid even if that's about double what that clone costs. It does add some bulk.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Xparent Purple Tapatalk
Yeah i decided to splurge and grab the real Tuff-Luv case off amazon (Veggie leather, never seen the genuine leather anywhere aside from the official site). It is quite expensive but i do believe the build quality will be better than the knockoffs (also the MiniSuit knockoff does not have a cutout for the left speaker, and ive heard of minor issues with alignment of the holes (for cameras, etc).
when it arrives in a couple weeks, i will post pictures.

Hi Wounded.
Got the mount this morning. All I can say is, well worth the money. It has a long flexible stem, idea for long dashboards. Twin suction cups. The part where you put your transformer is removeable, leaving just the suction cups and stem in place. Came very well packaged and fast delivery.
I will post some pics tommmorrow. Works very well with Sygic. I plug mine in via 3.5mm jack lead to stereo and wifi tethered to phone.

That would be an issue here in the UK as it is in front of the heater grill and we need that grill for heating here, not air con, lol, thus it would heat up the Eeepad (not good)
Thats a good point about the heaters...but it depends where they are situated. The OP's setup would have the same issue if the vents were in the same spot.

I see what your saying here, and thought about this very issue when initially deciding where to place mine. I have now settled on a pretty central location with the base of the TF just above the display of the stereo. Vision is good, no obstructions. Having used it for a couple of days, I have now gone off the idea of using Sygic for Satnav and have changed to Co-Pilot and to be fair, seems to be working alot better. I was finding Sygic to be slightly behind when driving, not a great deal, but for a picky person like me, it was enough.

ps why do you have your internet speed in your sig? is that high in the USA?
I got this one from ebay here.
I have tried this on most road surfaces: Tarmac, concrete, off road(I mean really bad roads). Not had a moments bother. The dual suction cup works really well. Added bonus of being able to remove the part which you put your TF in and leave the stem still attached. The stem is bendable, but stiff so not to move whilst holding the TF.
Like I said, very happy with it and worth the money imho.

THanks for the reply and link! Can you explain how the mount works, or make a photo of it without the asus in it? because it looks like there is no support on the bottom of the device? and how do you clip it in? Hope you can help me buy one
i don't think I would trust suction cups in general. Back when I had an Ipad 2 I picked up a mount that attached to the car seat. You basically loosen a bolt, and it mounts in between the bolt and the seat, you tighten it back up and that's it! After I picked up my tf I tried it out in my car and it works perfecttly. I guess I can't link yet.. but I found mine at mount guys dot com, but I've seen similar ones elsewhere.

The mount itself isn't just designed for the TF. I think it is universal. The sides are adjustable and release the TF via the switch underneath.

Something good about the transformer prime that gets overlooked...

The dry tablet wipe Asus was nice enough to include.
This thing is a miracle, my tf101 didn't come with one and I searched everywhere for them and couldn't find one. I went through about 4 packs of wet wipes throughout the period I owned my tf101.

Of course, the oleophobic coating doesn't hurt. The thing might attract a few fingerprints, but they wipe off exceedingly easily.

Good grief, the micro-fiber cloths are good; I use big ones on my 'Stang, and you can wash them, too. Don't use those "wipes", some apparently cause problems.
As for the oleophobic ?? Is that a fear of pig fat?
Ok, here's a great item to bluetooth your tablet (android phone) quickly, easily to your big speaker system. The Logitech wireless speaker adapter S-00113, about $33, plugs in to spkr system. Got a button on top of the little box, push it, a red light starts blinking, goto tablet bluetooth settings, make visible, and bingo! She hooks up, light turns steady green. Do whatever, all audio comes thru your big speakers. No degradation.
I have the Poetic case for tablet with dock attached, like it fine.

Actually, I have prepared a list of the stuff people are completely blindfolded about Prime;
- First starting with the cloth. Yes it is awesome, wipes off any dirt and fingerprints within seconds. I am very glad they included it in the box.
- The aluminum back. I don't have wifi issues and couldn't give a rat's arse about GPS But that back is absolutely beautiful, not to mention no matter how long and how extensively I use the Prime it keeps the device very cool, always under 28C. Our Xoom and Gtab have seen upto 45C within maybe 10 mins of usages. Early in the morning when I disconnect Prime from the charger, the device is blazing cold. I absolutely love the aluminum back.
- The camera. The motherf'n camera! I am so surprised people are not praising the amazing camera quality the Prime has. I have used it in under low light and even then it takes the best pics I have seen on any mobile device (even compared to the iFruit 4S).
- Lastly, the name. I love the name "Transformer Prime".

you can get a big towel sized microfiber cloth with a container of foam spray from Walmart for $10, it's made from GE. and it makes cleaning super easy.

Low-profile horizontal dash mounts?

I'm in the market for a low-profile horizontal mount for my i717 Note, but I'm not having much luck finding one.
The reason I need a low-profile mount is because I drive a Jeep Wrangler that has a very high dashboard. I purchased the Exomount seen HERE, and it holds the Note just fine; however, it stands up way too high and therefore blocks too much of my windshield.
The two low-profile options I'm considering (so far) are:
1. ME-USDM: i.Trek Universal Dashboard Mount
CONCERN: The clamp may not open up wide enough to hold the Note? (The description and comments indicate that it may only work with screens up to 5" -- such as the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0)
2. Roadster Smartphone Sticky Pad Dash Mount
CONCERN: The right and left vertical sides may block a small portion of the screen since the Note's screen is much wider than the iPhone screen in the pictures.
Does anyone have any experience with low-profile mounts like these? Better yet, does anyone have a recommendation for something even better?
Or maybe someone with a Jeep has found an even better idea?
Thanks ahead of time!
What year Wrangler? You running a case?
I've got a Speck case on my Note and was able to modify my SlipGrip mount to work with it... just a quick Dremel mod and I was ready to go.

Similar to this one, works good in both my late model XJ and my TJ. without blocking too much windshield.
I've been using this in my Honda as I hate blocking my view with the windshield mounts. http://www.amazon.com/Bracketron-PH...PPYC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330493893&sr=8-1 just clips on you're air vent.

Looks to me, that would put the phone vertical, not horizontal, like the OP wanted. Can it be rotated?
Yes you can swivel it and rotate it. Its on a ball joint.

I have a 2010 JK 4Dr Sahara. Where did you end up mounting that modified SlipGrip?

I was looking at the air vent mounts, but I'm worried they might bounce around too much in a Jeep (not exactly the smoothest rides! lol) How stable is it?
Have you looked at Mountek's nGroove CD Slot Mount I just ordered one since I dont ready ever play CDs.

Unfortunately, my CD/DVD slot is hidden behind the face of my nav-screen, so those aren't really an option.

The second one doesn't need a CD slot it can be mounted anywhere on the dash.

Stable enough for me but I can defiantly see it bouncing around in a Jeep. You might have want to see if proclip has anything for you.

Proclip does have a nice one, but it's definitely on the expensive side. I'm still considering it though.
Thanks for all the ideas so far guys, I appreciate it!

Can you study the pictures in that second Ebay listing and tell me if you think the clamp that actually holds the phone is adjustable? The pictures that show the clamp empty make it look like they're at a fixed width -- I think -- which may mean the Note wouldn't fit tight... I really can't tell.
What do you think? I guess I can also email them and ask.

Well I did a little more digging and your right that one wouldn't work for you at its full opening and full closing it wouldn't work with the over size beast that we carry LOL but the one that is made for the larger tablet looks like it would. The Note is about 153mm tall no case and this closes to 150mm so if you have a case it will be even tighter.

Then I ran across this video on you tube and I think you were already talking about buying one of these but it looked like it worked really well.

This is what I've been using for the past four years (I'm on my third one). The mount is somewhat cheaply made. The first one was broken and left behind by somedouche that broke into my car. The second one I had broke the gears on the inside that lock/unlock the device in place after about a year and a half.. so they're not the sturdiest things ever made. But I still bought another one because the placement is perfect for me in my WRX (and they're not that expensive).
It might bounce a little, but honestly, my car probably rides rougher than your Jeep since it's lowered with aftermarket struts set on the next to stiffest setting. I don't really have any issues with the device moving/bouncing around.
I can take some pics if you want..

Bottom of the windshield, has just enough reach to get the phone over the front of center stack. Phone ends up maybe 1/3 in front of the vent, 2/3 above the dash.

over2land is actually talking about modifying a "Slipgrip," while the video is of the "SlimGrip"... and I definitely like the looks of the one in the video!
I think I'm going to grab that one and see if it works as well as it does in the video.
Wish me luck!
Edit: Just ordered the SlimGrip SM578 from here:

I'll be sure to report back with a quick review!
