He could also mean unlocking his bootloader. Then that case go to www.htcdev.com and follow the directions. You will need to get a the token generated from initiating the get token command. Paste it in the box notepad and then paste it in the box on their website to generate the unlock bin code needed to complete the unlock process. It will be sent to your email address.

So..... lets say that i bought a sprint htc evo 3d and want to use it on my network(Bell) I would have to unlock it via htc dev? or unlock bootloader and s-off or get a unlock code?
do not worry, this is my 3rd smartphone and am pretty agile to unlock phone....just need to be pushed in the right direction.

The Sprint EVO 3D doesn't have a sim card. That means your phone has to be flashed to Bell. To do that, you need to bring it in to a Bell store. They should be able to do it.
It does not involve unlocking it via HTC Dev.

Best Practices for our new EVO LTEs.

I have my two new EVO LTEs in hand. From an experienced user, what should we do?
I don't want to mess with ROMs for a while but I want to root my phones to use TitaniumBackup, remove any bloatware, and enable WiFi hotspot.

is there root yet?
Sounds like you already know what you want to do. Just wait for a root exploit.

Yeah, I probably didn't ask the question the best way. I just don't want to screw myself if I update it and then have to delay getting a root method. I think if I root it and then perform and OTA update, I'll lose root, which kinda forces me to use ROMs.
Arghhh... I know stuff, but not to the extent I should to run off in the corner by myself with this thing.
OR you could just HTCDEV unlock, install Superuser, and have yourself a Gay Ol' Time!

I read that earlier but someone said it would void the warranty. HTCDEV unlock is new news to me as well.
I need to do some reading on the forums. I respectfully don't expect people to spoon feed it to me. I know that's rude. I just thought a best practices general outline would be helpful. I can search to find out how to do any of the suggestions.

The HTC dev unlock tool does work but maybe you should wait for the unlock method that doesn't void your warranty .

S-OFF for the EVO 4G LTE!

JuopunutBear and team have done it again. S-OFF for the EVO 4G LTE!
Root is required. Unlocked is NOT required... but supported! Support for Linux and Windows.

Cool.
Looks promising although since I've already unlocked via HTC dev what's the advantage of s off..as I understand we can already flash radios etc..also it requires root..how is that possible if u didn't unlock with HTC dev
I'm rooted but not unlocked with HTCdev. They are 2 different things.

why would i want to pay for insurance? my phone is covered under 1 year warranty. i change phones every year anyways. i never buy warranty for anything
So does this essentially unlock the bootloader and give s-off?
So can I run this with an unrooted phone? I was reading the pre requisite and said you needed to be rooted/temp, which doesn't that mean htcdev unlocked?
I want to avoid htcdev unlock...

Its basically what every has already done except your phone will say S-off instead of S-on....no additional features. U can do everything u were able to do before.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Cool. Once someone has a write up or script to relock, unroot, unlock again with s-off and reroot so i don't get that red text on boot let me know. That would be the only reason i care about this.
Hopefully the devs didn't waste a good exploit that could have been used on a phone that needed it.

HTC unlock code token reuse?

I found the email from HTC when I first unlocked my bootloader so when I go back to unlock I can re-use the same unlock_code.bin file right?

Yes you can. I've unlocked multiple people's phone and save all the individual unlock_bins for later use. Came in handy when running DirtyRacuns as I was able to bypass the HTC unlock part

[Q] Unlock.bin From other HTC device

Can someone explain to me the reason we can't use another HTC unlock.bin on the DNA.
The HTC Vivid (AT&T) went from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 Offically. So that means the HBoot got upgraded.
Now why wouldn't i be able to use the unlock.bin from the Viv, and unlock the DNA in the same way?
I want to try, but i don't have a backup verizon phone.
I know the DNA is a quad Viv a Dual
one GSM and ond CDMA/GSM
Any input?
I know it may be a stupid question, and it may get me flame, But what exactly does the DEV tool use from out OEM identifier?
We used to have the option under other Devices, until the 2.04
The unlock.bin is tied to the specific device that was used to get that giant block of text. You can not use one dna's unlock.bin to unlock another DNA and definitely can't use one from another device to unlock a DNA.

Can you use your phone number without having your SIM ?
I'm assuming that the devices token is embedded in the unlock_code.bin file, so I was curious on if it was possible to hack an unlock_code.bin to insert your token in to it. I tried to look in to it with a file hex editor, but I couldn't make sense of anything to know where to even begin, It much be encrypted.

Maybe if you have a supercomputer and a few years to crack whatever encryption they use on that file, it aint gonna happen.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
It's because you create the unlock token from the device. It's not one they just email to you. You pull unique identifiers from your device and then they use that information with their automated processes and they build the unlock code with it.
If it wasn't unique to the device, only one person would need to claim responsibility and agree to the license terms with HTC and then it could be passed around like a cheap craigslist date.

now that the Source code is out for the 2.04 update, we might get closer to an unlock

You can also skip the htc process and just soff and use revone to unlock boot loader. head over to htc international and follow vomer's guide to soff if you have never done it. great guide. make sure your hboot is less than 1.54. its under the "one android development" may be a page back, but it is a wonderful guide.
Sweet thank you guys for all the help I've always had galaxy's and am so used to Odin hahah

I had that issue as well, when your copying the token ID you need to make sure you only highlight the characters exactly. I was highlighting just past the last character of the token, like an extra empty space and it gave me problems.
