Atrix rebooting on it's own. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good afternoon.
I am having an issue with my Atrix and I read on the web others have it as well. What I am noticing is my Atrix for the past several days constantly reboots while I am at work. When I leave and go home or other areas of our region I have not noticed the phone rebooting.
Of course, talking to an AT&T phone rep in their stores is a waste of time because they want to replace my battery or give me a refurbished phone...
I'm noticing where I am at in our building the phone signal is constantly dropping. I believe the tower the AT&T antennas are on here in the city (Suffolk, VA) may be getting moved.
Is it possible that the phone is using more power to make a connection and overheating the phone, causing a reboot?

What is the software are you running at the moment is it a ROM or Motorola software?

I'm having this same issue. The phone is rebooting constantly while doing various activities.
Sometimes I'll try to turn the screen, it'll fail to turn on and reboot, or it'll freeze within an application and reboot. I'm running stock 2.3.4.

I have a feeling that the Atrix is just semi-unstable in general. My Fiance and I both have the Atrix and mine is custom rom'ed and overclocked (blah, blah), but her's is stock and still randomly reboots or freezes.

I went to Verizon and the Galaxy Nexus. Problem solved

[Q] Need serious data help!!

Ugh!! I'm about to throw this Vibrant against the wall!
First off, I love this phone! The display is brilliant and battery is one of the best i've had on a smart phone. But I've had one issue that is driving me crazy. Lemme give you the timeline.
1) I bought this phone on the first day of release in June. Loved it! Didn't have any issues.
2) Soon after the 14 days were up, I started having data issues. At first, every so often, whenever I would listen to Pandora or Slacker, after awhile the data connection would "freeze up" and I couldn't connect to the data network. I could occasionally resolve this by rebooting the phone.
3) After awhile, i noticed that the problem got worse. Any data-intensive app or website would cause the data to "freeze". It would be random. Sometimes, I could listen to Pandora or Slacker for hours or sometimes after 5 minutes it would lock up. Rebooting would sometimes work, but usually not. It would just resolve itself, but usually after 30 minutes or more.
4) Now, its basically happening all the time. Even trying to browse to google.com causes data to "freeze". Downloading anything is next to impossible.
I put "freeze" in quotes because i'm not exactly sure what is going on. The notification bar shows 3G with full bars. Knowing that is not always a good indicator, I downloaded mobile signal widget. During these periods of "frozen" data, it would still show 3G or "H" with signal anywhere from -63dBm to over -100dBm. Yet, no matter what, I still cannot connect to anything over the data network.
I've factory reset, reflashed stock, upgraded to JI6 (and JI2 prior), flashed Frankin-Twiz, flashed Bionix, flashed different kernals, no dice. I contacted T-Mobile and they sent a replacement phone. Same issue. I contacted Samsung and they had no idea what it could be.
Please. Can any one of you geniuses help me out? I'm considering going back to my trusty G1 (which does not have the issue), but I'd rather not.
i had similar problem on mine, before the JI6 update. I spent many hours on the phone with Tmo and no success. I had found that rebooting the phone seemed to restore my true data access, but you shouldn't have to do that 5-10 times a day. Eventually they turned on the "Android Web" at a cost of $10 extra a month and then it was less spotty. I don't know what eventually fixed it but it now works so much better. Then JI6 helped out a bunch too. I think somehow rooting it helped, but I don't see how. It doesn't make sense. My best guess is that Tmo signals suck or go down frequently and a bad factory modem points that out more clearly?
Well, I've always had Android Web (at least for the last 2 years), JI6 seemed to make it worse, I've been rooted from almost day 1, and all indicators show that the signal is good.
If I were to have to reboot everytime, it'd be much more than 5-10 times a day.
I would think at -63 dBm you'd have terrific data speeds. Best I've ever seen on my Vibrant here in Dallas is -81 dBm. Even though the notification icon said "3G", in the about section it showed HSDPA. I then ran a speedtest and was averaging 5 mbps download which is fantastic compared to what I get at home. I'm lucky if I get 1 mbps at the house and that's if it doesn't stall out requiring me to force it to 2G. I normally average between -81 dBm to -97 dBm, sometimes over -100.
But my phone has never frozen or anything like that. There have been occasions where the green up arrow will stay solid and I won't be able to use the data. But I think that is due to 3G being kind of ****ty near my house. I never have that problem if I force EDGE.
I am still using the JFD firmware though. I have yet to receive an OTA update and nor do I care. I also don't really care to flash it with ODIN either at this point. I'd rather wait until 2.2 is released....not holding my breath for Samsung/Tmobile though. I think TMO's 3G just sucks in a lot of areas. I have a Blackberry 9700 which gets similar crappy 3G performance. Case in point, I was at a wedding last weekend 10 minutes from my home and coverage was awesome. I never knew what decent HSPA was until then with this phone.
Oh and regarding the battery....while the SGS's battery isn't terrible for a smartphone, it holds nothing...I repeat...nothing...to the Blackberry. Sorry, just had to.
What I am about to say is very unscientific and 100% placebo based. Here goes:
I have always had that same problem. When using the extended battery and backcover, however, it appears to be nonexistent. Using speedtest I am getting upwards of 5 mbps where I previously would only get under 2.

Isn't the antenna on the bottom of the phone? Hence the so called 3g death grip. You may be on to something I switched to a different case....the fake carbon fiber samsung with galaxy s on the back and it seems my reception isnt as bad as it was. I dont have to force 2g as much at home. Previous was the casemate tough case. Either that or I'm just holding the phone differently. Or its a placebo affect like you said.
Anyone else have any ideas? Does that logcat help at all? I get a feeling most of the people who know the intricacies of Android don't look at this forum.

3g cutting in and out

My fiance listens to xm and pandora all day while working and he has noticed his 3g cutting in and out for the past couple of days.
It happens randomly sometimes for a few seconds to a few mins. The phone stays in the same spot and earlier in the week it had no problems. To temporally fix it he either unlocks the phone or has to reopen xm or pandora. He does have it connected to a charger while listening.
We both run kaos v39 with the newest radio and open gls. The only thing i remember doing was i downloaded a program called green battery but uninstalled it after a min.
I also switched from gsm to cdma prl on both phones
My phone seems to be fine but then again i dont listen to pandora and xm a lot.
Is there a different setting i can change or something. Thank u for any help.

Try this: Install a market app called "APN OnOff". Launch it. Choose "Show APN list". Press Menu and then "Reset to default". Reboot the phone and see if that helps.
He said even with that it still does it. Is there anything else i can try?

I've been experiencing something similar the last few days. It will start on 3G, then for a few seconds it will switch to 1X, and then switch back. It hasn't really affected my daily activities, but I definitely notice it.
EDIT: In addition to 3G abnormally going in and out, my signal has been unusually low as well.
I occasionally get the 3G to 1X. I just end up rebooting my phone and all is well but I don't think just doing that is a permanent fix.
Btw running CELB 4.3 if that helps

Add me to that list. I was previously (up until about a week ago) Tethering to my Netbook and streaming Netflix with No Problems, No choppiness, Full screen. Now I am lucky to be able to watch Netflix at all, small screen, or for that matter Load webpages in a reasonable amount of Time. Anyone Think they are Throttling the connections now that Iphones are coming Online to the Network and are trying to keep a handle on Traffic and perhaps avoid the same Issues ATT had with the Iphones, Dragging the Network to a screeching Halt. Anyway Contract is up in March and decided I will defect to Sprint or Tmobile. Never had issues with Tmobile in my area and may return to them on the G2 or the Mytouch 4G. Just my 2 Cents for what it is Worth.

Makes sense to me. It wouldn't surprise me if it's true. OTOH, several months ago I noticed severely decreased tethering experience and then out of the blue a month or so ago it started working much better for about a week. Now, though, it's back to the same old stuff. This was all with the same ROM and always with occasional reboots except when tethering never once gave out.
I'm basically always leaning slightly one way or another as to believing conspiracy theories or just chalking it up to things beyond anyone's control.

[Q] Randomly Restarting??? Coverage drop?? Help!?

So my Thunderbolt will randomly restart sometimes.. and drain the battery life down by at least 15%...
Other then that I wont have 3G in places I most definitely should..
I haven't down any root to the phone.. Not too familiar yet with it..
I have the extended battery with it? Maybe that has something to do with it? Idk..
If anyone has any advice/tips/tricks, it'd be much appreciated!
If you're getting random reboots and your phone is not rooted then return it and get a new one. There is something wrong with the radio in the phone.
i had the same problem except i was getting shut downs rather than reboots. it def is the radio, rooting and flashing various stock-related radios fixes the problem. as for services im getting good data service but poor reception. infact my brother picked up the droid incredible 2 and i compared how many bars of reception we had and it was about he same.. 1-2 bars, will sometimes cut off and come back on again. i evem get voice mails without missed calls, another sign of dropped service.. weird but it may be in verizons coverage for sure.

This is a problem known to Verizon with their latest radio release for RUU 605.7. Engadget had an article on this a couple weeks ago. Don't return the phone. Try a different radio and or ROM combo. Mine does it... And it seems to do it more in some areas than others. I travel a lot.
My wife's Stock TB (with OTA update) had random reboots. When we went live here with 4G her phone did not pick it up at all. She called Verizon for replacement and they suggested a factory reset first. It picked up 4G and has not rebooted since.... just a thought

[Q] Mobile Data Drop - Not Suspect To Outage

In the past two weeks, my mobile data has been down. I don't believe it to be an outage in my area due to the duration of the problem, and the inconsistency with other Verizon Wireless phones. I was running Juice Defender for a while, and every now and then I would notice that the Mobile Network would drop. Toggling the Mobile Network would not fix the problem, either. I usually cleaned out my cached data for the Juice Defender app, turned the app off, then toggled airplane mode once. (Sometimes just toggling Airplane Mode wouldn't fix it, therefore I had to clear the cache for the app.) Now this fails to work. I cannot get my mobile network to connect by any conventional means. When I receive MMS messages, my network will connect long enough to download the attachment. Also when I do a search for a Software Update, it connects just long enough to tell me there aren't any updates for my phone. I've tried updating my PRL with *228 and I've even tried *18 from a post over at Droid Forums. Neither work. I've removed the battery and SIM Card as suggested in some other threads here at XDA. I've also removed the Juice Defender app.
The phone is not rooted and has never been rooted with the Temp Root methods. I'm not opposed to rooting, but if I root, I'm gonna perm root and I would rather not have to factory reset my phone if I don't have to right now. I'm mainly posting this because I cannot find anyone online with the same issue that I am having. Any help would be appreciated. Personally, I think its an issue with Dalvik-VM. I can attach a copy of my LogCat if needed. Any ideas on my issue? Thanks in advance!
Check your power settings, if you are in economy mode it will mess with your data connection.
I have a paid version of JuiceDefender, it has caused me so many problems I don't even bother to install it anymore.

I also have the same issue, tried a couple basebands and could not fix it. I ended up not using it...
Every once in a while my mobile network or just lte somehow gets turned off and I have to turn it back on, but that's rare.
I tried juIce Defender and also had problems losing my connection so I uninstalled it. Plus the settings were so confusing to me. I'm using Green Power now and that seems fine.
You didn't mention mhs so I assume you're not using it but that has known connection issues.

Juice Defender gave me fits, too. I'm not using my phone as a Mobile Hotspot, either.
I kinda think its my ROM. I'll play around with some stuff, or I'll just get around to doing a factory reset and see if that fixes the problem. I'll post any solutions here for others.
Are you in a good 4g area? If you scroll down the general section here, you will find my topic. If you use 3g more than 4g, there is a post in that thread about##778#. It helped me. Sorry if it doesn't help you, Cheers.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm having this problem as well. I AM rooted and running CleanRom, but my daughter has a non rooted Bionic, and both of us suffered a complete loss of data today. My husband's rooted Rezound is fine.
I took my phone into Verizon today, and after initially just trying to swap out the phone (which I wouldn't allow them to do, it took me too long to get my phone the way I want it), they finally switched out the 4G sim card, and the data came back instantly.
When my daughter leaves school today, she will get her 4G card swapped out as well, and we'll see if it is in fact a network connectivity problem.
It seems to me that our 4G phones has a lot of trouble switching from wifi to 3G/4G service.

I will +1 this. My work WiFi is spotty, and so the phone falls in and out of WiFi. The Rezound HATES that and usually leaves me with no connectivity. There is definitely a WiFi->Mobile Network issue.
Try doing a factory reset. Could be a bad device... Im getting amazing reception on mine. I havent even seen my 3G or 1x icons yet. Constant 4G lock.
Forget what I said, my data connection has been dropped again for the past thirty minutes and there's no way for me to get it back.
I'm going to try a factory reset. I *really* don't want to have to send my phone back because my husband is getting amazing coverage on his Rezound. However, we're still in the first week of our Verizon contract, and if this looks like it will be a standing issue, then we'll have to cancel and go crawling back to horrible Sprint.

I think I'm going to try doing this. How painful was it for you to convince them to give you another SIM Card?
Edit: Just read your last post. Please let me know what a factory reset does for you.
They had no issues at all swapping out my 4G card, they certainly couldn't let me walk out of the store with no signal. They knew they had to try something.
The factory reset on the phone appeared to work. I've been steadily switching it from wifi to data, and the data signal picks up, albeit a tad bit slow. Only thing is, I still don't really get 4g, while my husband's Rezound has a great signal.
I got insurance on the phone, so I'll put up with it as long as I can before I start screaming at Verizon.
Good to hear. I'm going to try to switch out my SIM card today and see if that fixes it. I thought maybe it was something with the ROM, seeing as how my 3G will turn on whenever I need to send an MMS message, so a factory reset made sense to me. I just don't want to do it. Lol. Thanks for the info!
I've experienced it twice in the last 24hrs and it just happened to be right after I installed and used LTE OnOff. Don't know if there might be a connection there. I keep forgetting this phone has the ability to switch 4g/3G unlike the TBolt. Needless to say, that app is no longer on the phone.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I had an issue with the mobile network just dropping in and out (other people in the room did not lose signal). We currently don't have 4G and it is 3G only. I did a factory reset of the phone, but it continued to occur. Took the phone back to Verizon store to exchange it (it was 1 week old). At first they weren't going to and gave me a run around but in the end exchanged it. Have had no problems with new phone.
My girlfriend's Bionic keeps dropping 4G more frequently than my Rezound. I get this problem too though. Usually a toggle of Airplane Mode fixes it...but it's pretty damn annoying. Happens once or twice a day!
A Factory Reset fixed it. Everything went smoothly, too. I backed up all my SMS Messages with HTC's Messaging app, and got my network back as soon as I restored it and set everything back up. Hopefully this will help anyone else who might have had the same problem.
I've been side by side with a fresh Rezound and watched both of them jump from 4g to 1x to 3g and sometimes never 3g. The problems were a million times worse with my droid charge as it's a combination of the handsets and the towers.

Hmmm
I have this happen if I am in an area with NO signal (such as the basement level of my office building) for long time. Only a reboot will bring back data. Does not happen often (maybe 2ce in a month and a half).
I am intrigued by the person who blames the install of LTEOnOff. I have it installed but do not use it. Maybe if I ever have to hard reset (such as if ever run the unlock), I will not reinstall that program.

Random Reboots.

So over the last 4 days I have been having random reboots. at least once a day, sometimes 2 or more.
I've tried over and over to reproduce them but I can not trigger it.
Like just now, I have been using the phone off and on while at the office. Just checked email a couple times nothing major. Phone is just sitting on my desk next to me not plugged in, I had not done anything with it for over 10 min and I see a flicker out of the corner of my eye, look over and there is the At&t boot animation. (at least this phone reboots fast - inspire took forever)
It happened at home too when just sitting there not being used, jut being charged.
Anyone else have anything similar?
Im using stock rom, Rooted and unlocked, and I removed most of the at&t bloat. thats is, no custom rom or anything like that.. Yet...
If you haven't done anything to your phone, I'd say you have a defective device.
Might want to look into exchanging it.
What exactly have you removed?
I have been having the same issue. I've had the phone for about a month now and early on it would reboot once or twice a week. Lately, it's increased to one or twice a day. I'm rooted, but still locked bootloader. I haven't removed any apps, but a few are disabled or frozen. It's probably not related, but I notice that apps are updated when the phone boots back up.

AT&T address book
AT&T code scanner
AT&T family map
AT&T hot spots
AT&T locker
AT&T messages
AT&T navigator
AT&T ready2go
AT&T smart wi-fi
City ID
Facebook
Live tv
Yp mobile
My Wifi acts up sometimes too, saying and showing im connected but cant surf or get emails. I keep data off, sometimes turning data on and back off usually kicks it into shape. But it did reboot once while I was turning wifi off and back on.
I've only had it since the 29th... I got it at Costco so I have 90 days to swap if it is something I can't figure out.
