Hey guys,
I know there are quite a few options available to me, but I'm looking for a ROM that stands out above the others.
I personally prefer a stock looking ROM, but great audio quality is what I'm really looking for. And by great audio quality I don't mean "this has Beats, it's dank!" I've learned that just because a ROM has Beats doesn't mean it won't sound terrible.
It would be nice if it interacted well with DSP manager. I switched from AndroTECH Sense 3.5 (which had fantastic sound quality, but ran kinda chunky and had some major buggage) to Warm 3.5 (which had a really slick UI but not as good audio quality).
I'm pretty much looking for the best of both worlds, preferably something that looks stock. Working 3D would make me quite happy, and 4G is moot because I don't even have it where I live.
Has anyone flashed enough ROMs and experimented? How is InfectedROM Eternity?
As for kernels, Ziggy's kernel from last year has been the best performing for me, and has good audio quality. I honestly didn't know the difference in audio quality when I flashed Chad's Anthrax v9. I have a nice set of Bose earbuds and I'd like to say I'm a bit of an audiophile. I'm looking to get a powerful sound from my phone (which doubles as my mp3 player in earbuds and in my car) but not have to worry about distortion and clipping.
Thanks for your help guys.
Have you tried using an alternative music player? The stock sense 3.0 and 3.5 music players are garbage IMO. You should try PowerAMP. It even comes with a decent equalizer.
I've tried many 3.5 roms and miks runny is by far the best. It's my daily driver right now. As for kernel I'm using chads rls9 and it works flawlessly! So miks 3.5 and chads rls9 together are a perfect combo!

I actually run PowerAMP, but DSP Manager gave a great app even better sound quality when set up right, but audio quality relies largely on the kernel/ROM combo.

I've noticed recently (now that I am using my headphones), that my audio quality is very poor. I have viperROM Redline v2.5 RC2 installed with whatever kernel (2.17.651.5) that comes with.
When the volume is turned up, there is a fuzzy quality to the audio. This has been with multiple headphones. I have everything turned off in the DSP Manager, and I've tried several settings to no avail.
Any ideas on what to look at? Everything else is pristine, just the icky audio.

As far as I'm aware, this is a common problem. The Evo 3D simply has a low quality DAC.
Well that sucks. Anything one can do to limit the amount of distortion? It's shockingly bad.
Chad's kernels have great audio quality, but you trade certain other things (bluetooth, cam, etc.) when you flash them.

Yeah, too much of a trade-off for me.
You can lower the volume, but I know that kinda defeats the purpose

I notice this when maxing out the volume too. One or 2 notches below works fine. You could try messing with an EQ but it may be fruitless. Only other option is to get an in line amp for your headphones.

You are correct sir! I didn't see he was talking about a GB ROM. My bad.

Hey, did you overclock your cpu to 1.5G or even higher? You can try to reduce the clock and back to the original clock (1.2G). It may work. I am still using stock rom. My experience for audio quality is only acceptable. Compared to my ipod touch, EVO 3D sucks. But after I experienced audio quality of HTC G6(my friend`s), I changed my mind. I find it is obvious that audio quality of my EVO 3D is much better than G6. So if your ears are not sensitive, EVO 3D is enough for playing audio with your headphones.
I've noticed that with Gingerbread, the audio sounds better when you use DSP Manager. With ICS, none of that works and the audio still sounds like something pushed out of a large set of bottomcheeks.

So far I've been using the ARHD 17.0 and never looked back since I didn't have any issues. I decided to install a newer version today, and to my surprise the sound quality has worsened (not as loud and clean), I tried flashing the latest perseus kernel but that actually made my headphones crackle and didn't provide me with the same quality that I was used to on ARHD 17.0.
Now is there some sort of setting I'm supposed to change as the sound is much like stock only louder now without any actual improvements?

Try a kernel with Boeffla Sound Engine in it. There are kernels for AOSP/CM ROMs and stock ROMs, so be careful which one you choose. Quite a few folks are including the Engine in their kernel.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.near.boefflasound&hl=en
More is NOT better when it comes to sound improvements. The best things that Boeffla does is allow you to clean up the signal noise considerably on CM/AOSP kernels which is introduced by the terrible incomplete and/or non-existent sources that Samdung provided to the OpenSource community devs.
Keep the settings at a minimum and tread lightly when adjusting. I've found that this engine allows me to enjoy CM for the first time in the way I've always wanted. I just could not stomach the difference between the signal source sound from stock to CM kernels, but Boeffla makes it tolerable, not by just masking it with "more bass" or gimmicks like "Beats" does, but by actually tuning the FLL on the chip and cleaning up the signal through oversampling, etc.
It works pretty darn well. Close to stock, actually. Very close. It's been a real treat for me, because I had given up on custom kernels and ROMs because of the sound issues they bring, so I feel the pain. I'm a musician, and I have an ear for this stuff, from a studio perspective, and I'd encourage you to check it out. If the kernel dev doesn't include it, the Sound Control won't work, so you just need to check.
The Wolfson DAC in the S3 really is superb. It's a shame that Samdung refuses to share userspace sources to make things better for the community. I'd buy Samsung devices til the day I'm too old to make calls if they did that.

I'll give this a try, thanks!
it worked for me! BIG thanks
Currently I have I9100XXMS2 JB4.1.2 Android Baltic version installed on my phone (I9100). Audio quality (compared to CM10.1) is terrible on this kernel. I would like to ask if it is possible to install custom(better) kernel for this stock android JB. Also, if it is possible, maybe you can recommend kernel, which is, you think, the best when it comes listening to music.
There isn't one. The SQ on the SGS2 is limited by the ****ty Yamaha DAC. The best you can do is bump the volume up using a Siyah based kernel which gives the music more 'fullness', through headphones at least.

I am talking about rom/kernel issues, not hardware issues. When I had cm10.1 installed, music was fine, equalizers worked great, they improved quality of music very well. Now even equalizers are not able to make sure that the sound is the same or better as it was by using cm10.1.
Xplay off playstore is my choice of player. Good for quality of sound used with dori or siyah just make it even better. Loud and clear.

I've never noticed any difference whatsoever with various kernels & roms. A few music apps seem to have very slightly different sound signatures/qualities, but the variances are very slight (and may well even be imaginary). I think the differences people hear are down to changes in their headphones/earphones (and the cables, particularly in the case of IEM's) over time or even changes to their ears (wax, possibly other factors).
Having said that, I used Poweramp for 9 mths, then switched to Neutron for the last 3 mths I used my SGS2 as a music player (I don't anymore). I thought Neutron had a slightly 'cleaner' sound through 5 different IEM's, but as I said, that might have been my imagination/what I was wanting to hear.

I seem to be having incredulous difficulty getting AC!D Audio to work on any ROM I throw at it, so I'm done searching and instead resorting to reaching out to the community specifically. Does anybody know of any sound mods that work well with AOSP JB ROMs? The sound quality is just absolutely terrible, but I want to keep the AOSP look and feel. Touchwiz or ShoStock3 seems to have the best audio drivers for my taste, but is there some way to modify the AOSP audio quality? I've tried flashing Siyah's kernel to boost the headphone's gain but even then the quality is just awful. I've tried PlayerPro, PowerAmp, nothing seems to compare to ShoStock3's audio quality. This is a big deal, as music is my life and it would be much appreciated if anyone could relate/help.
check
did you check your speakers ? if they are working fine you may go to shostock rom thread and ask if audio drivers can be ported or individually uploaded or you may try xperia multie themed rom i use it and its completely fast and customisable and every thing works with no lag or audio issue

I have been playing with various roms for s2, but the difference in sound quality found on stock is far more superior than the CM based roms.
specially in headphones. 7.1 preset equalizer setting works best on stock roms.
is it due to libs? or some other reason?
had any one faced the same difference?

So far, I am experiencing the exact opposite. The sound quality on Custom ROMs are way better. Check out Pimp My ROM, its a app that tunes everything on your phone including sound quality to the max.
