ok so basically... im new to all this
and well i got my samsung galaxy ace about 4 months ago
and when i got it i rooted it and installed cynagon mod 7 on it
and everythinggg was fine
until just NOW
i was reading about low internal memory and rom etc. and i read that if you partition the sd card from cwm it will make it faster etc etc
but me being me i didnt make any kind of backup and dont have any backup at all of sd card
andddd i didnt know that doing the partition thing will clear all my data
is there some way of getting it back!!!

1. ALWAYS backup your ROM before doing anything with even the smallest chance of something going wrong. I hope you learned your lesson, friend!
2. External partitions in SD card to provide more space doesn't give any boost in performance, so I have no idea where you read that from.
3. Did I tell you about always backing up your ROM?
To answer your question:
Since you have no recovery image, then you have no way of restoring, unless you've backed up somewhere. I would recommend to just flash another firmware from ODIN.
next time...if you doesnt wanna lose u r data while partitioning, use ubuntu, and use tool named "gparted"

I'm sorry about your father dude.. But I don't think there are any because the data on your phone is 'burnt' and there's no way of getting it back. Just like when you burn something with fire . Really sorry dude.. Wish I could help

I understand... You'll need "Bad Copy Pro". I don't endorse copy right infringement or software piracy, but it can be found on many torrent sites cracked and working perfectly. Until you get a copy and scan the microsd don't write anything to it. Only the path to the file is deleted, but the data often remains until overwritten...

I would not try using software with that important stuff you lost.
Go professional and find a recovery company. It will cost you good money, but chances are very high that it can be recovered that way.
Stop doing anything with that sd card though.

Problem is that he didnt "just" delete files. He repartioned it. Probably formatted it afterwards.

As long as you didn't rewrite the partition, there's still some chance of recovery.
On Ubuntu (although I think there's also a Windows version, too), download the testdisk and photorec programs. I once used it to recover a 70-page internship report, and it not only found those files, but also files from around 2 years ago (even some files from when the OEM people were customizing it).
It lasts around 12 hours for a complete recovery of a 250GB drive (and the data recovered will be >250GB), so I'd say around half an hour for a 8GB microSD card.
Forgive my maths.

The plan is to choose a ROM which suits your preferences, e.g. no homescreen lag, better camera apk, better access to the CPU. Try a few, I use Villianrom, which suits me really but there are loads more.

your /efs folder is in comparison to apps, data etc. the most important thing to backup since it is the only thing that cannot be restored without a proper backup if it is screwed up by a bad flash. it basically contains your product code, imei and other sensible phone related data. you can backup it easily with hellcat's kTool app from market. For safety reasons you should copy your /efs backup img from your sdcard to your pc afterwards.
Concerning your other questions, just read through the few stickies in the general and android original dev. section. all what you look for is explained there very detailed.

If u rooted with cf kernel n haven't flashed another then yes, up+home+power >back up. Use hellcats k tool to back up efs (its on market or his thread in dev section) titanium back up is the 1st thing that comes up if you search 'titanium' on market the pro version is costs but is worth it.
Seriously tho, if you're new to android and have never rooted, give it a few weeks first otherwise you won't know what is 'better' and if you don't and end up having problems with roms you'll end up crying that you should have got an Iclone.. Just my opinion from observing this forum for a while

hi,this rooting seems pretty confusing as i used to be an iphone user and jailbreaking was simple but this seems to be difficult to follow,ive been looking around the forum for step by step guide on how to install roms etc but just cant find them,would like to test this out to see if it was worth rooting but at the moment its done nothing for me or the phone its just added another few apps,it seems to me like its a lot of hassle to get different roms etc onto the phone & whats radio etc do i need to update other stuff when i try to put roms on & kernels whats that all about ????sorry chaps but im clueless to all this stuff maybe i should have stayed with apple.
and the efs backup has been done with hellcat & when connected to pc there is no backup file on my sd card ??

My advice is to stay away from flashing ROMs, kernels and rooting.
Use it like you used your iPhone, install games and apps from the Android Market and enjoy your phone.
Unless you've seen something you particularly want from any of the above, the risks for you are not worth it.

As far as I can tell, you haven't said how you rooted - looks like you flashed a different, pre-rooted kernel. There's not a big risk staying rooted, just take extra care if you install something and you get a popup on your phone telling you it's asking for root (superuser request).

Of course you can easily completely revert back to your original set-up. For doing that just type *#1234# in your dialer and post here the output. I or someone else can point you to your original rom.
BUT you will never get a taste of in my opinion the greatest advantage of android: it's customability.
I promise you, you won't regret the effort it takes to educate yourself a bit about the basic knowledge you need, to do all the cool stuff which is only possible rooted. It is enough to spend some time to read regulary here on xda and you will see that everything is really not that hard. You don't have to fear, it is almost impossible to brick your phone if you just have a backup of your /efs folder, don't flash the firmware of another device on your phone and don't disconnect your usb cable in the one second a different bootloader gets flashed. I have flashed and hardcore abused my sgs1 more then 500 times (no exaggeration, i am a dev for sgs1 ) and my sgs2 also very often. Everything ( while testing stuff i went through scary errors and a literally death phone more than once) is recoverable except in the three situations i mentioned above. And you can ALWAYS go back to stock later on no matter what you have messed up.
Have a look again at the content of your sdcards (also in folders and subfolders), the efs.img or .tar has to be somewhere there, save it on your pc and the party can be started

Take your time to read through, everything is explained very well
2. Then you are ready to flash your first custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288850
this is in my opinion the most stable atm. Read through the first posts, download the 2.9 zip from the post, copy it to your internal sd
3. Switch your device off and boot into recovery by pressing and holding volume up, home and power button at the same time until samsung gti9100 appears on the screen (about 5 sec.), then release the three buttons and you are in recovery mode. You can navigate with vol up and vol down and power or home button in the recovery mode. Navigate to "install from sdcard"/"choose zip from sdcard" and then select the file you have downloaded. Confirm and relax. That's all... easy or?

The efs.img is stored where hellcat directed it to, i just didn't remember where. but yes it is the right file.

From now on you can easily forget about kies, roms here will mostly provide newest firmware long before it is out via kies. Also with odin you can always much more comfortable flash the same firmware as comes over kies.
You can flash any rom you want as long as it is for your device (gt i9100).
As i said, take your time and read across the forum and always follow the thread about the rom you run and your knowledge will improve from alone have fun bro

You're better off waiting. They discovered a bug that causes the device to be bricked if you format the SD card. There's a fix for said brick, but it's still something that shouldn't be out in the wild.
I was looking for the same thing, so since I don't see anyone posting it I guess its a no on sharing cm7 lol

So far yes but truth is that eather with warnings or not people(noobs) could still do it lol so... to put an example i have read of 2 guys who wiped all the partitions off course they bricked their device (Judge for yourself).
So let devs work, test more and fix bugs, anyway there are some other bugs too and it other features aren't supported yet like Bluetooth, microphone, etc. I personally stay away of alphas but this time i tested support of apps and few other things but nothing major because i know there can be risks.

The bug is on both versions, and occurs if you try to format/erase the SD Card through the CM7 storage menu. So theoretically as long as you don't do that, you're fine, but I understand the hesitance to share a file that could potentially brick someone's device.
I was using the internal version, and experienced the SD format brick.
After recovering, I've continued to use CM7, primarily because when I tried to go back to the 1.4.1 + root image that's floating around here, I couldn't install market apps anymore. Tablet would reboot every single time I've tried. So I went back to CM7, just reminding myself to never, ever, ever erase the SDcard through the mod.

I Rooted my Nook Tab back in late November by following ADB instructions and then applied many different tweaks including build.prop etc. All directions in these forums must be followed explicitly and you MUST have some working knowledge of ADB and a general understanding of how computers work. I have read every post in this forum and spent many hours researching how the devs were trying to circumvent the bootloader using various exploits. I did try to inject the Chainfire 3D wrapper as to be able to play Tegra Games and got caught in a boot loop and had to factory restore. Over all, I have been very careful. I have read in the forum that others have tried to apply CM7 update by trying to flash the cm7.ZIP file. It is very lucky for these people that in Clock Work Mod (CMW) this mode does not format the internal memory, it just writes to the System/app folder or to the folder that is specified inside the zip file. It is easy to get excited around buzz words like CM7 and CM9. But it is important to net let it go to your head and research thouroughly before hack-a-lackin your tablet. I am very grateful that the Devs rethought the CWM flasher and added the hash checksum so that someone with a bad connection didn't flash a partially downloaded file. I have CM7 on my Nook. Luckily, I didnt try to format an SD card with the Nook, I used an external card reader. The most important thing is, the Devs and the End Users are all going down unfamiliar territory. Research is the WORD. Happy Hacking!!!

Unzip it on your PC. If you are in CWM, you can go to the Advanced menu and "Mount USB Storage."

I put it in usb storage mode transferred the file from my download files to my computer unzipped it and took the file and placed it in the cwm restore folder went to restore and tried to flash and still got the md5 mismatch error please help

I believe you need to unzip straight to the SD on your nook.
So when you extract it you do it directly to the cmw folder okay ill try that

Hi guys,
Right so I own both Galaxy SII(personal), GT-S5830(business) and my wife has a GT-S5830. Located in the UK
Now I have been looking at the latest CyanogenMod and would like to install this ROM on my GT-S5830, as I understand this is one of the best custom ROM's available for this phone.
However every where I read advises me to first backup my /efs folder, only problem is I can't find this folder to back it up! So far I have tried EFS Pro and a few others, but they all fail or give me an empty folder.
Any help would be very much appreciated as I have been researching this since Friday and I'm pretty much ready to blow a gasket....
Dont ever try to touch ace efs partition as its dangerous. Many had hard brick their ace because of tinkering with that efs partition. Ace's efs partition is abit different from other device because it's hidden and unmounted upon booting.

If that's the case why is everyone telling me to back it up? I'm more interested than ever now lol, is the Ace the only one that has this partition hidden?
Everyone from where? I never came across any post here on ace forum that advice to tinker with the efs partition. And its stupid to advice to do so on ace because in order to backup it u need to mount it first and thats when disaster strike.

I thick it has something to do with IMEI coz some guys r loosing their IMEI after flushing custom Roms which results to no signal situation meaning ua phone is done 4 real coz there is no known way of recovering it 4 Our ace
I keep reading that it is wise to back up this folder before you start flashing new ROM in case you screw this folder up.
U read that on other device forum, not here on ace forum. As i said earlier, dont ever touch ace's efs partition.
But if u insist of doing so, theres a thread here somewhere guiding howto network unlock ace, and in the process also explain howto mount that particular hidden partition. May god be with u if u ever try to do it.

ops..dont mean to. just saying not condemn u. am learning myself with posts from the devs n others. 2days? seriously? 'dont touch the efs' thats what everyone says. what im understand is u should/ always backup ur rom before flashing custom roms with cwm. its for your own safety. ..and.. backup ur sdcard before making an ext for system i make a mistake for the first time and lose all of my data in my sd including my gf pics.

Don't listen to anybody who says to leave the efs alone. I don't have your device but I STRONGLY urge you to find a way to back up that file. If you have already rooted the phone then a good file explorer should allow you to make a copy and send it to dropbox or save it to your external SD. Even mass storage and copy/paste it to your hard drive on your computer. And yes... CyanogenMod is the very best.

You Galaxy S-ers will never know what will happen if we do our efs.....we can back it up but there's no way we can restore it . So it's basically useless anyway

To be honest there might be a very low chance to get the files back:
- boot into recovery
- do an image backup of the SD card partition
- loop mount image on your PC as a partition
- use file recovery tools on that partition
For backing up, you can use my A.R.T. tool (http://anddisa.tk)

Gry the app called undelete. If this doesn't help there are programs for PC that find the deleted files. It worked for me. The pics won't be the same resolution but it's still better than nothing

Everyone here should know that if you flash something, anything, you do so at your own risk. And you always do a backup before you flash anything. People who don't & end up in the you know what deserve zero sympathy. And derision when they start blaming other people for something that's of their making.
Well, I agree with you: having a backup is always the best way to prevent those cases, but ...
If I flash something (in this case a theme), I can imagine that due to flashing something wrong my system is mixed up / no longer booting / what ever ... But I would never expect that the internal sdcard partition will be erased. This has nothing to do with the theme. Either the OP has done a mistake while flashing the theme (in this case it's his fault), or the theme / installation script has a bug and erases the partition. In that case the OP is right to be angry ...
Important documents should always have a copy in the cloud...
That way, u won't lost it even if ur phone explodes!

Well firstly this is not your personal support forum and people here are not paid to help you so putting things like "Help very fast" in title isnt going to make people help you faster, its just going to annoy people.
Second, it is not the rom/theme etc creators fault for your own incompetency for not having automated or manual backups of your important data.
In future make backups!
Third, There is plenty of topics about recovering data already, This question has already been asked and answered so in future use SEARCH button.

So simply ANY nandroid backup I count on does not seem to satisfy me
I've been fooled by my device like 3 or 4 times and lost a lot of pretty customizations that were on it
My problem is that I can't seem to take a working backup.. I always have the MD5 checksum error and stuff
I tried 2 kernels so far and the last one was Apollo which I BELIEVE is tested and is working for a lot of users.
Could it be because I move the backup to my PC until needed?? Should it be on the SD card all the time? :/
Try backup to internal sd card. There may be a problem wth your sd card?

Hmm.. Try philz recovery if you are cwm, or vice versa then? Is there a problem when you are recording videos and such?
Edit: HD videos
I have had those aswell, i found a guide(workaround, whatever) on youtube. Just open your cwm backup folder and look for the nandroid.md5 file. Open it with an editor and delete all and leave it empty. This way it wont check the md5 sum and just restore. However if your backup is damaged it might not work or cause troubles. You can also use nandroid restore app from play to restore data and apps. Good luck.

The advice I was given at a very early stage in my android modifying was to zip the backup prior to moving it to a PC........ then when it was going to be used, move the zip back 'in phone' and use the phone to unzip it.....apparently this minimises the risk of corruption......
Whether this is true or not, I haven't investigated, but it *sounds* reasonable.......

I had the same problem, solution for me was to rename the entire backup, don't know why ....
But it's important that the new name doesn't has space or strange signs inside ...
You could use: mybackup
