I had that exact problem last night.I had usb debugging on,downgraded the kernel and something then switched it off and I couldnt boot the phone.
I think I started pc companion>update > repair >chose my phone, then connected the phone holding back button when asked.
Either that or i used "easy rooting kit"

I prefer using x10 flasher as that flashtool 0.6.7 give me nothing but trouble
flash the stock firmware using the latest flash tool. works like a charm
hey guys,
slowly i'm getting a little bit desperate actually i'm not sure, if my problem at the moment is flashtool or cyanogenmod 9.1 which brought ics on my phone or whatever. hope you can help me
i have an xperia ray and was on stock gingerbread 4.0.2.A.0.69 with baseband 8x55A-AAABQOAZM-203028D-66. but as the stock xperia included kraken facebook stuff, i finally wanted to get rid of it, so stock ics was no option. then i heard of cyanogenmod, which my friend had installed on his samsung galaxy s, and it worked perfectly there out of the box, so i wanted cm as well...
so on friday i installed cm9.1 stable from download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=urushi following this guide: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Xperia_Ray:_Full_Update_Guide
everything worked fine except of no phone and mobile data connection. i researched, and it seems the xperia ray wants baseband 72 to work properly. so i installed latest flashtool 0.9.3.0, installed the proper drivers with flashtool-drivers.exe fomr flashtool folder "drivers" and tried. the second try i finally managed to get the ray's green light signaling flashmode, but flashtool disconnected in between, and on the ray one could see an image that looked like a glass with a green liquid in it... well, as flashtool had closed the connection, i waited a little bit and - as nothing happened - unplugged the usb cable and tried to reboot the ray fearing that i had bricked it. actually i didn't, the ray booted up, _and_ i had phone and mobile data connection! so i thought everything was fine even as my phone info still says "Baseband: 8x55A-AAABQOAZM-203028D-66". first i thought "anyways, everything works fine".
and so it seemed, but today as i was visting my parents, where i normally have a fine phone and mobile data connection, there was nearly nothing, and so i thought, i have to get bb72! but i don't get the ray into flashmode anymore
i read tons of guides, tried several variations of plugging and unplugging points of time... no way... somehow i also fear that my problem might be that flashtool wants the phone to have usb debugging and msc mode on, which i did, and when i start flashtool with the phone plugged in it says "Device connected with USB debugging on", but after the unplugging, shutting down the phone and connecting it again with the back-button pushed and holding it says "Device connected with USB debugging off" and "For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode". maybe that's because i don't get the device into "green light flashmode" or maybe (as i had read about meanwhile) because with ics msc isn't (fully) supported anymore?
so, can you please help me? any suggestions how i can get that baseband flashed on my phone? should i try it with the linux version of flashtool, or are there still any possibilities on windows (xp sp3)?
thx a lot, and by the way: phantastic work, that all you developing guys and helpers do for us!

EDIT: hey again... i finally managed to get into the green light flashmode somehow, but flashtool still says:
09/006/2012 18:06:55 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
09/006/2012 18:06:55 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode

so i looked around, if there is maybe any other way to get that baseband flashed on the system, and i found a thread called "[Q] Flashing .ftf file without flashtool?" that states, it was possible with fastboot: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562110
so i'd like to try that. unfortunately that thread got stuck exactly at the point where it was about getting the right commands to flash certain files - e.g. for a baseband
what i did so far is: i renamed the baseband-ftf to zip and unzipped the zip. the following files are included:
adsp.sin
amss.sin
amss_fs_urushi.sin
apps_log.sin
fota0.sin
fota1.sin
loader.sin
plus a folder called META-INF, but i guess that one isn't needed.
to flash the boot.img, when installing cm9.1 the cm-guide posts that command:
fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img
the guy from the thread "[Q] Flashing .ftf file without flashtool?" posts those examples:
fastboot flash boot kernel.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
so, what are the commands to flash those "sins"? and do i have to use that "-i 0xfce" part, or is "fastboot flash" enough?
hope, someone can help me with that
thx a lot again!

Hi,
How are you trying to put your device in flashmode? If you do exactly what flashtool says, you wont get it.
You have to turn off your device, select flashmode in flashtool, press and hold Volume Down Key and then connect the phone to your PC.
The Back Key is not functioning for our Xperia, but Volume Down yes!

hi,
hm, i'll give it a try, but all the guides i found concerning the ray explicitly wrote about the back/return button like e.g. this one here talk.sonymobile.com/thread/24433
and as i wrote in my original post and in my edit i managed to get into green light mode with back/return button, but flashtool "just" didn't recognise that the ray anyways - despite it being connected with usb debugging and msc mode on - which is because of a problem concerning ics and msc mode i fear...
but i'll try it with volume down anyways. there can't happen more than before
is there anybody out there who possibly might help me with the fastboot solution?

Also i dont know if it happens on the newer flashtool version but if you leave it connected to flashmode for too long it automatically breaks the connection. you should always drag'n'drop the ftf into flashtool and set alll that up and only enter flashmode when it tells you too after its all ready to go.

hope, i won't have to flash around too often but thx for the tip
what i also found out accidentally yesterday, is the fact that msc actually works properly on ics/cm9.1, if you explicitly tell your device to connect as mass storage.
before the upgrade to ics i simply plugged the ray into the pc or mac, and the micro sdcard showed up like an additional volume. it didn't anymore after the upgrade. the device said something like "usb connected" in the info bar, but nothing more happened.
yesterday i checked that message in the info bar more accurately, even tapped on it, and tadaaa, the option was shown to "turn on usb storage": jayceooi.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/SGS2-ICS-USB-Mass-Storage.jpg
so easy and so far away simultaneously; unbelievable. anyways, i have "real" msc now again
I have two questions regarding flashtool. Before connect my phone i enable USB debugging.
When i try to connect my phone in flash mode, after few seconds it automatically reboot to flashmode. When it reboot i can see kernel boot logo. It keep rebooting to the flashmode. In addition to that, when the phone automatically reconnecting, flashtool display "USB debugging off". Why is that?
If i connect my phone after boot (normally), flashtool identify my phone WT19 as "ST17". I try to edit it in flashtool "Device>Edit", but it again identify my phone as "ST17". Why is that?

On which software version are you currently on? Can you flash a wt19i firmware now on your device? Or does this fail/gives you an error?
Did you flash the wrong kernel?
Try reflashing the stock kernel/rom.

Hello everybody, after trying to root my phone in order to eliminate apps pre-branded, my phone doesn't start anymore, black screen.
I tried to use both PC Companion or Flashtool, but the problem is still the same, they are not able to connect to the phone because of the failure to install MTP device driver when I connect phone to pc via usb.
I spend ALL the day trying to solve the problem..
Any help will be appreciated, Marco

Yes I did several times using under drivers directory Flashtool-drivers.exe (even if I'm not sure WHAT drivers I have to chose..). After that the problems still remains , in the device Manager I see that APT Driver is not correctly installed.
Is it possible to download somewhere this driver ?
Any other suggestion, I'm getting crazy :silly:

Why are you trying it with the unbricking ftf? Have you tried flashing the stock rom?
Install Sony Update Service, it should have the drivers, too. Turn phone completely off (pull battery), wait 10 seconds, insert battery, launch flashtool, select the stock ftf for your phone, hit okay, hold volume down (on phone) and while holding it connect phone to pc :good:
Tell me why did your phone brick?

Well, I was trying to root my Sony Ericsson Walman in order to uninstall some app pre loaded by manufacturer. I've flashtooled ST18i_4.1.A.0.562_(1252-5332).ftf and after that I'm no more able to switch on my phone, black screen, even if if I remove battery the green led is on.
I tried to unbrick phone using Flashtool, PC Companion, Sony Update Service, BUT the error I have is always the same, when the phone is attached to the computer, the MTP device drivers fails and return RC = 10.
@ mihahn
Could you please what "stock" ftf is and where can I find it in order to try to perform your suggestion ? Thanks again

Hello! I am trying to upgrade my ST18a to a different rom. Have been on the threads learning and re-learning hours each day since Saturday. Almost posted this at 2am last night-- another multi-hour reading/fixing session, but decided to go to bed. (also, very happy I found my password/login for here, was in another phone that I just found)
*ISSUE* Flashtool says to install extra drivers. When installing the SEMC drivers (whether via phone direct plug-in and being recognized by Windows, Update Service, or Flashtool Driver installation program) the computer freezes before completing on the very last driver wdfcoinstaller01009.dll . Have to power off: mouse etc nothing works. This happens when the Ray is off, Volume down button held, plugged into the computer, driver installation, at the end, FREEZE.
- Current firmware is 100% original, just opened it from a sealed box. 4.0.A.2.368 Android version GB 2.3.3
- Bootloader locked. Unlockable: yes. Unable to unlock it because... Flashtool does not recognize the device. (Not interested in pin method.)
- The first thing I did was root with DooMLord's zerg rush.
- Tried to flash XPERIA HD Ultimate, learned that the kernel needs to be updated first.
- Sony PC Companion, Update Service, and Flashtool are all installed. Windows XP
- Installed Flashtool's Ray-specific drivers, Fastboot drivers and Flashmode drivers
- Flashtool does not recognize the device. Sony PC Companion does. Update Service launches SEMC install program, same freeze issue at end of installation.
- The Google USB drivers are installed
The additional driver installation DID go well, once. Then went to Flashtool to flash and it aborted saying drivers needed to be installed.
Have reinstalled Flashtool. Reinstalled Sony PC Companion.
Have made sure that the phone was on and "seen" via Sony PC Companion before starting Flashtool.
Additionally, Flashtool can only be run once. If I exit the program, it will not start again: have to reboot the system.
Thanks in advance. Fortunately, not frustrated or anything, just looking to get this phone working. Thank you!
(have searched/read threads on Flashtool, SEMC Drivers, unlock bootloader, wdfcoinstaller01009.dll [nada zip zilch], and read from page 1 to 10/20/40 etc. Flashtool's FAQ on their page is slim. Have done the homework, now stuck.)
(The final thing I've *just* done is downloaded the Android SDK, saw that suggestion in a thread. Launched Eclipse. Got a Java error, I don't think that this has anything to do with anything, just mentioning.)
This is the main link I've been working off of, and just counted: I have 13 other XDA thread windows open.

Hello Anseboyi, thanks for your almost immediate response. This afternoon, right after reading I did just that (and mentioned above that the installation/computer freezes at the end of the SEMC driver install, whether initiated by the Flashtool Driver Update program or by connecting the phone to the computer in Flash Mode (holding Vol down button and plugging it in).
I wrote down the exact steps following what you suggested:
********Begin "self-log" notes************
C\Flashtool\drivers
Tickmarked Ray, Fastboot and Flashmode
Successful! Installed the following drivers successfully (as has happened before)
Sony Ericsson (WinUSB)
Sony Ericsson Net (02/23/2011...)
Google, Inc. (WinUSB)
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (ggsemc) USB
Then, started Flashtool. Plugged in USB cable. Held Volume down button and plugged cable into phone (previously did the opposite – cable in phone and then plugged in USB, switched to see if this made a difference. Either way, the same crashing at the end of the process has happened about 20 times. 5 times a day since Saturday, in-between reading/researching/downloading.)
Flashtool says:
“ Device not recognized. You need to install drivers.”
(this is *after* the "successful" installation of the above drivers using Flashtool's Driver Update)
Connect phone to computer.
Windows recognizes phone... S1 Fastboot I think it said. Found New Hardware Wizard starts. No, skip Windows Update selection and select to choose my own location.
Click Next to continue. I am saving this write-up before clicking Next, becasuse all of the other times, the computer crashes. Oh, ok. “Install the software automatically (Recommended)”
Message:
"The software you are installing has not passed Windows... blah blah blah. "
Click “Continue anyway”
Installation goes well, until the very end (the progress bar is at the end, presumably 99%)
COMPUTER FREEZES
***On the last dll the install animation goes on forever and ever. Moving the mouse at all? The whole system freezes. This is what happens.***
I just went ahead and ticked *all* of the phone options in the Flashtool Driver Update program...
They all installed successfully.
Restarted the computer.
Started Flashtool.
Connected USB plug to computer, then while holding Vol Down button. Flashtool says the following:
24/002/2013 22:02:40 - INFO - <- This level is successfully initialized
24/002/2013 22:02:40 - INFO - Flashtool Version 0.9.11.0 built on 2013-06-04 22:50:00
24/002/2013 22:02:48 - INFO - Device disconnected
24/003/2013 22:03:39 - ERROR - Drivers need to be installed for connected device.
24/003/2013 22:03:39 - ERROR - You can find them in the drivers folder of Flashtool.
Right after this, Windows has launched a Found New Hardware Wizard. This will lead to the above, installing and getting to the SEMC drivers installation and then the computer freezing. Have done this multiple times.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1730874 see this do the device manager thing said here
Ok... I will check that link out right after typing this latest update/log... thanks!
Right before logging in again I made sure to check the Device Manager, and the phone is a-ok, listed as Sony sa0102 ADB Interface Driver.
So, the computer crashed/froze on the last installation of the SEMC Flash Device.
So, this time, something different: after computer restarted, plugged in phone, and let it load and be recognized. Sony PC Companion recognized the phone, and the windows drivers installed a-ok.
Then, started Flashtool. This is the log:
24/035/2013 22:35:43 - INFO - <- This level is successfully initialized
24/035/2013 22:35:43 - INFO - Flashtool Version 0.9.11.0 built on 2013-06-04 22:50:00
24/035/2013 22:35:57 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
24/035/2013 22:35:57 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode
Ok... so I pressed Devices => Check Drivers and then got this...
24/036/2013 22:36:31 - INFO - List of connected devices (Device Id) :
24/036/2013 22:36:31 - INFO - - USB\VID_0FCE&PID_6161\43423531315535393438 Driver installed : true

Still not recognized. Off to check that link now...
Oh my. That was a disaster.
Computer freezing left and right. Connecting the phone and it just froze. Fortunately I know a bit more about computers than Andriod: returned to an earlier System Restore point and then uninstalled that device/device driver as it was still a part of the system.
If the idea on that suggestion was to point to a specific file directory that can be done without going to the device driver. When the New Device Wizard starts you just have to choose the location. If the idea was to use that driver, installing that driver froze the computer, and then after a reboot the computer froze right after connecting the phone, which has never happened before. And all kinds of other things. I appreciate your suggestion: unfortunately it didn't work.
**SOLVED** Downgrade Flashtool version
[EDIT 8-13] SOLVED, but not with using Windows XP-- Well, after installing the earlier version of Flashtool the phone could be recognized, and I was totally elated. But then when it came time to flash the phone the program asked for those SEMC drivers (which had already loaded successfully before) and the computer just froze again. After a week of a few hours each day restarting the frozen computer over and over went ahead and used a different OS. Windows 7. Upgraded the Ray with PC Companion and then re-rooted with Flashtool by flashing an earlier kernel, rooting that with DooMLord's kit, then reflashing the stock kernel. Phew!
[NOT] SOLVED! Answer was to downgrade Flashtool version. I read a comment somewhere that the new versions only work with "xxGhz processors". This computer is a dinosaur, so thought an older version might help. That was it.
- Uninstalled Flashtool version 9.
- Rebooted computer
- Installed older version of Flashtool--- 0.7.1.0
- Rebooted computer
- Plugged in phone, let all drivers load
- Started Flashtool and here is the log
25/041/2013 21:41:51 - INFO - <- This level is successfully initialized

I currently have 4.0.A.2.368 . The Ray wants to upgrade OTA to 4.0.2.A.062 (which I tried when getting the phone, however that didn't work). Sony PC Companion is ready to install 4.1.B.0.587 . Going to go ahead and install through Sony Companion using Voodoo RootKeeper to see if I can keep root. If not, will go ahead and use this tutorial to re-root.
