[Q] Better Connections with BAMF than CM7!!?? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've been running CM7 on my TB for quite some time and absolutely love it. However, I decided to try BAMF Forever and immediately noticed better connectivity and a stronger signal after loading the ROM. BAMF is a great ROM, but I much prefer the functionality of CM7, except for the apparent strength of the signals. Both ROMs are running the same base band (1.48.00.0906w_1,0.01.78.0906w_2). It's definitely not my imagination. With CM7 I often get no signal inside my office and if I do, it tends to only be one bar. With BAMF I'm getting 4 bars and none of the connectivity issues associated with my CM7 ROM.
Is there a radio that's known to be a better match with CM7?
Thanks in advance.

WHat do you think is the best no-crap ROM?

So I tried CM7, but I don't think it is working out. I have no 4G and my signal is noticably weaker. This rally sucks because I like CM. So I am looking for a ROM that has all the VZ crap removed, and is rock solid and stable. ANyone got any suggestions?

Das bamf 2.1. I would recommend the sense 3.0 but there are many graphical errors and das bamf 2.1 seems to be flawless for me. If I believe you will have to flag a different radio for bamf as I think cm7 still operates on group radio? Or it used to at least.
OK, so when I do the *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information and Set Preferred Network Type, these are my options...
WCDMA preferred
GSM only
WCDMA only
GSM auto (PRL)
CDMA auto (PRL)
CDMA only
EvDo only
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Unknown
The unknown option was selected when I looked at it. Isn't there suppose to be an option that says "CDMA+LTE/EvDo auto"???
This is my concern, as well. Not looking for eye candy, just optimization.
Plus, i want to do my ADB operations in Linux. I guess that I could follow the Mac OS X instructions, as well....
i think you'd be happy with das bamf 2.1 thats very well optimized as its still on froyo. Iv heard very good things about it. massive battery life etc.
Actually 2.1 is Gingerbread.

I think you're thinking of Das BAMF 1.8. 2+ is gingerbread, 3+ uses sense 3.0
Well, parts of it.
Depends if you want sense or not. I like the stripped sense roms like Ginger bean, stripped bamf, telsa coil all run fine. And you can use the new radios instead of having to use the old ones like with cm7

If your looking for the best battery life and performance then I say Das BAMF Stripped 1.8. I haven't tried the gingerbread versions so I can't say if 2.1 stripped is as good as 1.8 (2.1 isn't a newer version, they came out at the same time, one for froyo and one for gingerbread) any Das BAMF roms will have a toolkit with the LTE settings for quick changes from one to another. CDMA+LTE/EvDo auto is the option you want for 4g and CDMA auto (PRL) is the setting for 3g.

I haven't run CM but I believe you are in the wrong settings. Try going into Settings -> Wireless and Networks and finding those settings there.
Oh - and I've been running Das BAMF Sense 3.0 and it's a great ROM. It has Sense but all of the bloat is gone.
Also, keep your eye on TeslaCoil - it's Sense stripped AOSP inspired ROM. I used the Froyo version and it was AWESOME. The GB should be the same except there is an issue with mms not working (you have to use GoSMS or Handcent if you want mms). When that gets fixed, I'm going to check that ROM out.

OP, i'd say take a look at the Team GTP Eaton Rom. froyo rom but based off mr2 so u get all the advantages with signal, battery, etc. that i've found to be part of the mr2 radio. i've been running it since the day i rooted, almost 3 weeks now, and haven't had a single force close, reboot, nothing. the devs pride themselves on it being a daily driver, stable, rock solid....check it out and see what you think. good luck!
Its the only ROM i've used so far but I've been impressed so far with the Eaton Froyo ROM. As stable as stock, but has some nice added features. The best of which being the MR2.5 radio (see post above) which really improved the speed my phone was getting a data lock. On stock MR1 it would take ages sometimes to get a data lock coming out of standby, with the Eaton rom and radio it is so fast you don't even know it was disconnected.

i think this is what i meant lol.
Check out gingerth3ory! Rock solid, blindingly fast, awesome battery life, EXTREMELY active dev (and a badass at that).
4.3 has a few sense things, which I promptly froze in titanium. 230mb free mem on boot!
4.2 sugarfree is properly stripped and crazy fast as well.
I'm running a personally stripped 4.3 until th3ory releases a sugarfree version.

+1 for Gingerth3ory! 4.3 is still a little buggy, but 4.1 or 4.2 are rock solid...for me anyway. Super fast and very smooth!
Edit: Make sure you use radio MR2 though as MR2.5 causes some freeze ups and reboots.
I'm sure there are several ROMS out there that you would be happy with, you just have to try them out. Personally for me, anything DAS BAMF will not disappoint you. Just remember to wipe factory/dalvick and cache.

Honestly, I dont lik sense and i just run BAMF 1.8 Stripped. I honestly dont see me flashing a rom fro awhile.
The 2.1 is battery heavy, the 3.0 is battery heavy. If you have extended GREAT! itll be worth it. however i hate how the phone feels with extended(yes i have one) and i will not go back to that.
My vote is for liquid rom if you want GB.. or jcase's plainjanev3 for Froyo.. with stock kernel on both. (stock as in the HTC kernel)
BAMF Stripped 1.8 with leanKernel and stock radio <3
Plays psx4droid perfectly. Battery life is amazing (just got under 50% after 9 hours of streaming audio over WiFi). No bugs or anything. Staying on this one until CM7 has 4G working correctly.

[Q] wifi signal always low

On my Fascinate I my wifi experience hasn't been the best. It drops out in my room whereas my iPod touch 4 has no problems. And I almost always just get 1 bar, more if fairly close to the router.
Is anyone else having low wifi signal their fascinate?
Could it have anything to do with my ROM? It's JT's vanilla GB
fascinates have crappy radios. I took my first one back because I thought the wifi was broken, only to get the new one home and find out that it was only marginally better.

I agree. I'm using CM7 nightly 112 with EH03 radio and I be 15-20 ft away unblocked for the signal and not have full bars. However, I was able to get 1.89Mbps with 3G whereas I only got around 1.2Mbps on the EC09 radio. I thought it may improve the wifi which is why I tried it but aparently no dice.
okay, thanks guys.. At least it's not just me. so is it just the fascinate, or do all Galaxy S have bad radios?

Do Kernals affect signal and 4G/3G

I was just wondering, Ive ran a couple different ROMS lately based on the newest leak and it seems that my 4G signal is not as good. I see 3g more it seems to even get stuck in 3g for periods of time for no apparent reason and doesn't seem to change as fast.
Now with the current ROM I'm running its a bit better, but still I'm on 3g where I got 4g before. I was just wondering if a different kernel would have any effect on this. Im not really sure it would because the kernel controls the processor and battery, stuff like that doesn't it? Radios control signal. Im wondering if the issue may be 3g/4g switching though and not an actual issue with signal.
I'm really not sure about any of it

The kernel shouldn't make a difference. Did you upgrade your radios to the latest leak?
I have this problem with the latest leak radios. I actually went back to gb radios because of it.
On the past few ics leaks I spent more time in 3g than anything.

Modem For ICS

I am run running AOKP Milestone 6 with the Devil Kernel. I switched from the stock modem to EC09 because all I hear are good things about the modem. My signal strength actually decreased from -91 to -93. What other Modems are there that I should try. My 3G was really slow with the stock modem, so I am looking for the fastest speed.

Droidstyle's guide (which you may have used) listed the modems he recommended the most (EH03, EC09, and I don't remember the other). I believe your choices might be somewhat limited by the network your on (Verizon vs. someone else), but I could be wrong.
From what I understand the EH03 (stock GB) is the fastest, so if you're not getting good speed it could be just the network like Aesrys already pointed out. Just try them all and see if any show improvement for you, if they don't then it's probably just your area. Also, have you updated roaming lately? Try *22891 which when dialed will download an updated roaming list to your phone, possibly providing better reception. When I did it I actually noticed a better signal at my house. Not sure if it'll help data too, but hey worth a shot.
I'm currently EC09 which i was running back on eclair ,,, and i also tried EH03 too,,, i actually never ran any gb roms,,, went straight to ics,,, and tried both EH03 & EC09 and the building i work in (a real tin can) just kills signal... It does seem to be very slightly better on jb roms but i finally got a decent wifi router so I'm real happy with that,,, ,,,anywhere else outside of work i get good enough 3g signal too do all i want to do...
I could and can navigate w/Google maps great,,, surf web/twitter/fb,,,etc on 3g during lunch
Before jellybean I was considering greeting a newer Samsung phone in hopes of a better 3g signal,,, but I'm glad i upgraded to jb and wifi..:thumbup:

AOSP signal vs TW

Today I moved over to a 4.4aosp rom, and I noticed that the phone switches to 3g a lot, and always when I put it in my pocket. Never had this on TW. Is this common with aosp?
me too

I'm having the same issue. But it's just strictly 3g. I'm on pacrom 4.4.2 nightly 4/21 release. Have tried at least 7 different versions of pacrom. Any fix or somewhere anybody can guide me would be great! Thanks!

Samsung has the proprietary drivers for cell signal. The RIL for CM Roms cannot obtain the same level of signal. I've compared this countless times with CM vs TW, and TW will always have the better signal/data strength. This is especially pronounced in areas of weaker signal. You'll notice that you'll drop LTE, and it will take a while to get it back. It has been much improved, but if signal is a must for you, TW cannot be beaten. Sometimes you can compare the dbm side by side and it will show the same, but real world use will have AOSP roms suffering more with their signal. Sucks, but it is what it is. I used to always flash aosp for speed and then signal issues would annoy me (work in buildings with poor service to start) and would end up on TW again. Ymmv

Understandable and thanks for replying back but I am still a little bit confused. This almost means that everybody who is on CM roms have only a 3G signal at best. And from what I have been researching TW roms pretty much do not exist anymore (or at least are not updated) I am just having a difficult time finding a rom that has everything I want as well as my LTE/4G data speeds. I have tried over 10 different nightly PacRom builds and its the same thing. If I mess around with the different "preferred network types I can get it to trigger LTE but then I am unable to make or receive calls. I would post this in the PacRom thread but I do not have enough posts to do so.
Thanks again for replying back.

Do you get full 4G when you're on a TW rom? I run nephilim right now after trying all the roms and I think it works quite well. Theres no perfect rom out there, so you'll have to decide what you're willing to sacrifice
What I noticed on AOSP/CM/AOKP roms:
Battery life is dismal - even on airplane mode I drained my battery to 20 in 6 hours.
GPS performance is lowered - even though I get locked on, it doesnt seem to track me as well. (this could be coincidental or biased.. lol)
Signal - definitely lowered, but barely not very noticeable. (You might want to check on a TW rom like I mentioned earlier)
Camera - some roms are super buggy, crashing every other shot then unable to initialize my camera afterwards
Text reflow is gone
Random bugs all around, usually not bad if I'm working in the office, but for weekend excursions, I'd rather have the stability of TW overall.
Let me know what you think, and definitely try switching back to a TW rom to see if your signal woes are resolved. Could be a hardware issue as well.

I need to locate a TW rom and go back to check. I am not seeing any that have been updated to 4.4 yet so I guess I will just have to settle with 4.3 because the signal and now that you mention it the battery life is very dismal. Thanks again for your assistance!

I tried Trent's and nephillim ROMs and I still have only 3g on both. This has just started happening recently too but it stays on 3g no matter how many times I wipe data and factory reset. Im starting to think that I may need a new sim card. Also I didn't realize the WiFi issue with the other two 4.3 ROMs until I already flashed them and then reverted back to 4.4
Thanks again for the assistance. I'm gonna get a new late sim card and see if that helps.
