Chance to compare SGT 10.1 to TFP - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

After being pissed at the delays of the Prime back in December (mostly with the retailer I purchased it from), I decided to cancel my Nov 22 pre-order. Reading some of the negative comments about the Prime from new owners here, I decided to pick up the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, even with the negativity being displayed at XDA I still longed to try out the TFP. What can I say, I'm a sucker for specs!
I love the SGT 10.1...even with the current stock ROM. Plan to change ROMs if I ultimately decide to keep it. I have a few days left to return for a full refund.
Just this morning, I found a Prime in stock in my city and will be picking it up later today. This will give me a chance to compare the two side by side and determine which one I will keep. If the Prime shows up with any defects at all (minus the GPS which is a known defect), that will make my decision fairly simple. I'm probably going to be overly picky while scrutinizing this device considering what I've read on this forum. If both feel just as good as one another, I will probably decide to keep the Prime.
My only gripe so far with the Galaxy Tab is that it's just not NEW technology. I wonder how much development can continue for that H/W. Whereas, the tegra3 development still needs to be born...but my assumption is that it will.
I will update with my thoughts.

As I'm sure the SG tab is a swell device, There is no comparison To The Prime.
That's like comparing a mustang to a Lamborghini Don't be fooled by some of the negative reviews. There were plenty like you who doubted. Then they took the plunge and never looked back since. They said they were glad they didn't let the negative comments from some persuade them. Plus only with the Prime will you get Free Ice Cream..lol Now what other tab is giving away free Ice Cream Sandwiches?
Instead, read the positive reviews, which FAR OUTWEIGH the negative ones.

Once you try the TFP with ICS I'm confident you will be returning the Gtab. TFP is by far the best tab experience I've had after trying most.

I know from many other forums that I frequent that negative comments (on just about any topic) are always SCREAMED much more loudly than anything positive. People rush to the internet to bring up the problems they are experiencing. Misery loves company???
The problem with reading the positive comments are the so-called fanboys that wear rose-coloured glasses. They will forgive just about any defect they see...or, they will not report on it and quietly seek to resolve their own issues while continuing to pump up the product.
Either way, it's really hard to determine from sites like this if problems really are rampant with a particular device (no doubt they do exist for some, though). A small vocal minority can make a huge difference in people's perception on how wide-spread these issues really are.
I am more than happy to have the opportunity to have both in hand and give them "my" real world test.

very good point and its Fair. The issues some people are having are very real. no denying that. I think the worst I've seen was people who experiencing screen banding issues. I saw some pics and it looks horrible. but as with any other issue, these are in very small numbers. Getting a prime now will more than likely be out of a new batch with the hardware updated that addresses BT/wifi issues n such. Still metal back though. Good Luck on your comparisons. I'm sure you will find the more stock Ice Cream Sandwich experience to be alot smoother n faster than the Galaxy with Touchwiz slapped over the OS. The Galaxy is a real nice device. But at the price point of Prime, the specs, and Performance, it can't be beat now. And the display is just lovely..lol. Report back on your findings.

The Gtab is quite nice, my brother has one and brought it over. I was able to play with the Gtab and the Prime at the same time. To me, the differences were more in the look and feel (I much prefer the Prime, but they are pretty close in size), I didn't get a chance to run any games or anything. However, this was before the ics upgrade which is definitely a game changer. For the same, or similar price, to me it is Prime all the way. Have fun comparing!

I sold my Galaxy Tab to buy my TFP which comes today (i hope), I got almost enough $$ from it to buy the TFP which to me was a no brainer given the improvement in specs, seemed like a good time to upgrade before getting stuck with old technology when the quad cores start flooding the market.

DAMN!
My order was cancelled saying that there were now none in stock. Guess I was a little late in the queue of orders.
Then...I saw it available at another location and promptly ordered...same thing happened again.
Well...I will keep trying until my refund date arrives....if not, the Galaxy Tab is the one for me. I`m going to continue looking for one in the next few days....really hoping to try one, though.

The prime might have ICS, but the galaxy is supposed to get cm9 by the end of the month. I would rather have cm9 over stock ICS. That being said, I sold my galaxy tab for the prime.

My wife has Sgt 10.1. They're just different. We both agree the Touchwiz has got to go. Other than that, if you don't want quad core and prefer the rather delicate plastic back of the sgt, keep it. Ps tf dock > sgt dock.

My wife has a GT 10.1, and when I was using my original Transformer I admit to being a bit jealous. The GT 10.1 has a markedly better screen than the TF101, is much thinner and lighter, and had some simple things that Samsung added that made it a bit nicer, like search in the stock email app.
The Prime, however, killed my envy. It feels more solid than the GT 10.1, is just as thin/light, is of course faster, and the screens are pretty close in normal lighting. However, take the two outside and turn on the Super IPS+ mode on the Prime, and there's no contest. The GT 10.1 is pretty much unusable in direct sunlight (like pretty much all other tablets), while the Prime is perfectly usable, even comfortable. Also, ASUS added in some of those nice missing features, like search in the stock email app.
So, while I'd say the GT 10.1 is the best tablet other than the Prime, the Prime is the better device.
Note: One thing that's certainly heads and shoulders better on the GT 10.1 is GPS. It locks on instantly, and maintains a lock well. It can easily be used as a navigation device using an app with local maps. Huge win here.

Well once bootloader is unlocked I'm sure we will be seeing cm9 soon enough. We have great Devs and are very quick at turnaround time. I to had Galaxy tab 10.1 16gb version. Returned it for the Prime. It's a good tablet but doesn't compare to the Prime. My wife though has the GT 10.1 and she loves it.

ah man, you have me laughing. I noticed you quoted what I said..lmfao its true though

I sold my GT 10.1 to get the Prime, which I have had for about 10 days now. The difference is like night and day. The GT 10.1 is so sluggish in comparison. The Prime is light, glam, the screen is amazing, ICS is brilliant, and the dock just adds a whole new dimension! Never looked back!

Is this the best tablet out or not.

Have read so many negative comments just want to know if this is the best out or what. It has better spec than any other tablet but all I'm reading are complaints. Mine won't arrive til Wednesday and I haven't planned on buying the dock just picked up that black sleeve that reminds me of origami.

Yes, it is the best 10.1" Wi-Fi Android tablet out there. The raging debate you're reading is about how long it will stay that way.
You will always hear negative things about any tablet when they first come out. That should be expected nowadays.

Sorry, but really? there are many MANY threads discussing the viability of this topic.
"Best" is a relative concept. seriously. why clutter up the already exploding forum with truly useless threads?

Yes this is the best out for Android right now and probably stay that way for at least next 4 months or so. The negative comments are just the more vocal ones. More are completely satisfied with device. Like me, and others with none or very minor issues. I'm very satisfied with My prime. Best tablet I ever had and I came from an iPad. Which I loved also but the prime just blows away the Competition at the moment. As with any device, there will be initial issues that are real and effect some users. You have to remember they are the minority. Check out the positive prime thread and you will see how easily this device lived up to the hype and more.

I know what you mean..lol at least I prepared my Ipad got my woman to use. Signing off Facebook apps n such and deactivating my email accounts on there so she can add her info. I'll always still have access to it and have certain places in there locked down. So she can't go snooping in places she shouldn't be at...lmfao I still have to transfer websites/bookmarks, resume, etc.. To my prime though. My jail broken iPad is a great device but I have moved on to bigger and better, The Prime.
Thread should be moved to questions or closed. Best or not is subjective and a waste of time especially when OP has stated it has the best specs.

Yes, it is the best Android tablet out right now.
Naturally, the best products out there receive the most scrutiny, so that's why you're reading so many "negative" things about the Prime right now. That's a byproduct of being one of the best products out there.
And as said already, the comments aren't about if the Prime is the best but rather about how long it will be the best. My personal view is that the Prime is an in-between device that is between the 1st gen Android tabs and the wave of 2nd gen tabs coming out in 2012, but I invite you to do your own research on the Prime and on upcoming tablets and to make your own decision on where the Prime stands.

I ran out of thanks. Very well put.
If there's one thing I'm going to take with me when I die, it's that this world is composed of 99% whiners.
To this day, I still see people whine about the stupidest things about the TF101. Some examples are a few people whining about being able to see the capacitive sensor grid under certain lighting at a certain angle. I've seen some people whine about the TF101 not feeling like a laptop. In fact, I think that's the #1 complaint I've seen about the TF101. People bought it thinking they can use it like a laptop.
I've seen people whine about the background moving slightly when you scroll from screen to screen.
I have the acer iconia, and so I've seen people whine about ridiculous things about that as well. Everything from the metalic back is cold to the touch to the sensor grid being visible under certain light at certain angle to it doesn't feel like a laptop.
Why is it that the prevalent whine for any tablet is that it doesn't feel like a laptop? Why the hell do people buy the tablet with the intention to use it like a laptop? Is there some kind of mental block involved here?
This is not to say that I see every complaint as a whine. In fact, I think there are many legit complaints about design flaws, software bugs, etc. You just have to filter out all the whines to see the real legit and constructive criticisms.
The point is don't just blindly look at the negative reviews. Actually read those negative reviews and try to weed out all the whines.
Added by edit.
Here's an example.

The Prime is the best tablet with the best Tablet-OS right now.
This could or will change in a few months, but this is normal in these days.
Sorry to say but I am not impressed with this tablet. I want to be, but it is just not happening. I just posted an initial review where you can read the details but to summarize:
- Hard to hold, very slippery
- Horrible keyboards
- SLOW web browser
- Short Battery Life
- No real noticable difference performance improvemant compared to my Toshiba Thrive

- SLOW web browser...as compared to what? An iPad (yes it's not iOS)? or your Thrive? Again see above comment.
- Short Battery Life...you've had it for at best a week, the battery is nowhere near broken in.
- No real noticeable difference performance improvement compared to my Toshiba Thrive....Curious, what do you use your tablet for to measure this "performance"? Your email reading isn't going to get any faster with the T3...

See the above edited quote. It seems you do not perceive the device to meet your expectations...easy solution, return the prime and keep using your Thrive as it is obviously a better solution for you.
My big issue with Prime is that it has gotten lukewarm reviews since release, especially by its users. While people were criticizing my fears and predictions a month ago, reality is that Prime is not as big a step forward as hoped, neither in software nor in hardware.
Hardware seems to be flawed with weak WiFi and the chance of getting a device with some sort of hardware flaw, including light bleeds, weak GPS, dead pixels, weak and unresponsive touch screen, screen that is dusty from behind the glass, or a device that just does not turn on, is higher than that of an average new product. Especially when compared to Apple's releases, which - while not flawless - hasn't made me fearful for the products quality that I am buying. I love Android so much more as a software, despite its weaknesses, simply because the ecosystem and much better openness compared to Apple are worth it for me. It pains me to see a device that has flawed and untested hardware.
Second issue is software. Quad-core does not improve anything much and ICS will not improve things other than (hopefully) the browser. Prime has very little RAM, which I think would be much better for an Android device than quad-core. Prime would be a better device with higher-clocked dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM. And you have to remember that the snappiness of software is highly dependent on hardware too, a recent Finnish review pointed out that the touchscreen is simply weak and not as responsive as it should be, making the software seem slow. This too won't be fixed by ICS.
And let's not forget the issue that I raised very early on about the Prime: battery life. Now that users actually have the device, it has become clear that battery life on Transformer Prime sucks. Everybody was up with pitchforks when I made those early predictions, but those were true predictions. Users report 6-7 hours of battery life in actual use, which is far from 10+ hours. Even with fresh battery this is very little. This means that I could not use Prime as the main device for lectures and web browsing while at University.
I will still be buying it and hoping that I won't get a flawed device, since I'm ordering it internationally and returns are a pain. At least it should be better than the original Transformer. But main reason for my purchase is the keyboard dock. If I did not want the keyboard dock, I would not purchase Transformer Prime.
That makes 3 of us. My wife has gotten mad at me a few times... Lol
I love it, but I am itching for some ICS.

Don't let the complaints discourage you from picking one up

I didn't get a "perfect" transformer prime (one dead pixel and no gps) but I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. The ui is fast, everything opens up in a second, the video streaming on youtube/veetle (app)/imdb (app) is ridiculously smooth, the sound quality is loud and clear, the build is very sturdy... i could go on and on.
If you were thinking about getting one but got deterred by some of the posts on here, remember that we are early adopters. imperfections are what we put up with to be the first kids on the block with these amazing tablets. The people that are having issues are a minority: we only post to complain, never to praise. its human nature.

Problems on new releases are a must have. You'd be hard pressed to find any product with a smooth predictable release. I'm personally glad you guys bit the bullet for the rest of us to figure out whether we should buy in now or wait. The device is still very attractive. With the feature set the Transformer Prime offers, you're not going to find much better elsewhere any time soon.
However, I am incredibly upset with ASUS and their response to these complaints about buggy software, faulty design, and inoperable components. They have no right changing the feature set to suit what is currently "working," so they can avoid fixing it. I hope they wise up, otherwise people that are waiting to purchase when the bugs are worked out, like myself, might just wait until some other manufacturer delivers on our needs.
Whether or not people who are having issues are a minority, I'm afraid that the Prime has a greater percentage of problems than most devices. Say 35% of people may have problems (edit: this is of course a hypothetical number), and that would technically be a minority, but its still a huge problem and greater than what most other devices have. Its just my personal opinion that some of the Primes problems boil down to design faults rather than QC (while other issues definitely are QC).
Go for the Prime if you really want it. I highly suggest you take a purchasing route that allows you to easily get your money back in case you get a defective unit, though.

thanks, this thread was needed. Prime will still blow any other tablet away right now. even with its issues affecting some users. I'm just glad I didn't get a defective device with some of these issues people been describing. that's what so crazy about it. I've been here since 12/22 perfectly enjoying my experience with the Prime. haven't even touched my Ipad since. most of the stuff I had on Ipad I went on and got for Android. experience is night n day better than on my Ipad. Tegra3 is a beast!
Well, I will wait and see the upcoming fresh batch with ICS. Probably ASUS will fix the back with some plastic patches to improve the WiFi and GPS, or totally redesign it.
Also to watch whats on CES and February Mobile World.
Glad that I live in Europe, The Prime has not been released here. Otherwise I would jump to preorder and end up disappointed.
Oh well, my Galaxy Nexus is big enough as mini tablet, and I can use my wife iPad2 .
I have to say i had a few bugs with mine but gps locks right away and i have no dead pixels or bleeding etc... My problem was when it brought in restore from my phone an app was causing reboots and lag. I factory reset and started from scratch and now this thing is beast. I wouldn't trade this for and other tablet and I have tried about all of them. I would not let any of these reviews discourage you.

I'm pretty used to dodgy GPS on my devices (N95 - slow, no AGPS; Touch Pro - likewise; Galaxy S - awful) so my expectations are rather low tere... As long as mine has functional WiFi and no other major bugs I'm sure I'll be happy with it!
Other tablets will come out this year which will beat it on screen resolution and single/dual-threaded performance, but I'm getting this for the keyboard dock as much as anything else, so I don't think I'm going to be wishing I waited for one of those.
i could live with certain issues like bleeding, light leaks, etc. But GPS is one of those most important features to me, seeing it not working properly is a huge disappointment.
The way I look at it, the prime had time to get the kinks out from the Asian/American releases,
hopefully now us Europeans will get slightly revised better checked units.
Atleast I hope so..
Screen bleed never bothered me a whole lot, bad wifi is also something im used to,
no working GPS however is a bit of a disappointment because the tablet was to be my only means of navigation.
I definitely do not want a screen with ANY dead pixel though, it would drive me up the walls.
I have a laptop with one in the middle and its like it is screaming at me "look at me look at me look at me!".
But im not gonna let all these horror stories get to me,
there's still a good chance ill get a nice working unit ill be perfectly happy with.
Im gonna make sure I buy it somewhere nearby, with a good return policy though!
love this thread, i am so close to not getting this thing.
this has changed not my mind, but it helps me relax a wee bit about my purchase.

I own a Prime for 3 days now, no dead pixels, no GPS and wifi reception is okay imho. Nevertheless the Transformer Prime is a beautiful device: thin, ultra-fast, durable and elegant. I would buy it again
But:
I am really upset about Asus removing silently GPS from the specifications and I am waiting for an official statement.
Asus cant just ignore the elephant in the room, I think we'll all have a nice handsome GPS function in icecream sandwich.
No point fixing a wagon that ll be scrapped in a week or two, right?
As much as I want it as as painful it's going to be..I'm going to wait! There, I said it, now I have to keep to my word. LOL
If Asus continues with current PR strategy (removing stuff quietly), we will see crap loads of cancellations of pre-orders and subsequent price drop. I bet you it'll be 50GBP cheaper (for 32gb + dock) by the end of next month, if not sooner.
Question is : how long can I wait

I agree totally. I think Asus should have done a test market in Taiwan first. Waited two months get the bugs out then released it. If they had originally given a February release date and fixed things accordingly to the test market findings they would be seen in a much better light. I think this push to get it out was a mistake. I love my prime. I'm one of the lucky ones with no real issues. But if they had given a later release date I would have waited. Its just a matter of keeping the public informed.

AM I CRAZY!? Or do i have Prime fever :)

Ok here is my story. Either i am OCD, have to much free time or crazy. Which my GF seems to agree with the last one A tad bit about myself i am a electronic junkie. Just in the last 2 weeks ive gotten a PS Vita, a new phone "Samsung Galaxy Note" & of course the other thing you will read below. I just love new technology and utilizing it to its potential. And even beyond what the company intended on. And no im not rich, i think my GF is making me eat Ramen Noodels for the next month lol.
I just got back today from Staples with my either 6th or 7th Prime, lost count lol. I was there at 8am being online showed "low stock" they had one though. I added a extra $106 to get it while returning my Galaxy Tab i bought last night which i never opened.
So basically i bought a Prime around a month or so ago along with a keyboard dock. Love the thing to death & thought the dock was a great addition. Even bought a Microsoft USB wireless receiver so i can use my wireless Xbox controller on games and such. And also bought a micro HDMI to connect to my Samsung smart TV.
My first Prime worked good i think i bought right around the time they were first pushing the ICS updates. But had bad wifi drop off by just walking into my living room. Started reading XDA and obviously it was a problem. So i figured id exchange it for perhaps a better one.
(2nd Prime): Basically identical to the first perhaps a tad better. Kept if for a few days before me and my GF agreed for the price i paid it should perform much better.
(3rd Prime): This is around the time whe started to receive some OTA updates and things seemed much better. Better wifi in my 3rd one which was a C1 serial. Long story short returned and was gonna sit back and wait to see what happens with ASUS.
(4th Prime): Had Prime withdraw, or thats what my GF called it and things started to look up so i got another. The Wifi was pretty damn good this time. GPS was ok while on wifi. Only problem was there was bad light bleed and 2 dead pixels . Figures...
(5th Prime): Exchanged to Gamestop no problem and the 5th was just as good as the 4th with a tiny bit of light bleed but no dead pixels. A keeper. First day or so it ran great. 2nd day i started getting my random one reboot per day, lockups and youtube glitches. Almost seems like it performs flawless the first day and says ok you had enough fun lol. So i returned and did not get another
(6th Prime): So.... after 24 full hours i missed my Prime It's so nice having a tablet to do the tasks i do like web browsing, checking email, youtube. Customizing, rooting/roms and such. So i got another knowing the problems and hoping perhaps it would be a better experience.
The next day they MWC introduces the T700 and i felt slightly shafted. My GF told me id return it and wait out which i kinda agreed. I did just buy a Galaxy Note and i can kinda use that as my Tablet i figured. So after getting my 2-3 reboots per day browser constantly crashing and youtube glitching and no new fix from ASUS. You guessed it i returned it.
Now last night i was really bummed on being tablet-less. I seen Staples was selling the Galaxy tab 10.1 for $399. And the new Galaxy Tab coming out is basically the same thing. So i went and picked up a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the time being until perhaps the TF700 comes out. Plus the development is great for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on here rom wise. I could overclock, root, and install roms right out of the box.
So i brought it home and i let it sit on my desk all night. Jumped on XDA on my phone and was reading while i was staring at the unopened Galaxy tab on my desk. Long story short i never opened it and exchanged it for ANOTHER PRIME this morning . I just did not think i would be satisfied overall with the Galaxy Tab knowing the Prime is out.
Something keeps bringing me back to the Prime. This is my last and final shot lol, i even promised my GF that. Something about the all aluminum back to me is sweeter than that of the TF-700 with that plastic strip that looks misplaced. Something about having it now rather than waiting for the new one months away. Something about this damn tablet keeps bringing me back at least. As long as my wifi works as good as my last few units ill be happy i could care less about GPS. I honestly thing the great developers over here can work the kinks out. So as i type this i have a un-opened Prime in front of me. Which is a C1 serial, funny my last two were C2's. So wish me luck!
So i ask you am i CRAZY, persistent or what lol? Anybody else out there like me? Make me feel better! Hahaha. I apologize for the long post. I just felt like i needed to get it off my chest. And its hard to explain something to women about electronics.
PS: Best part so far from exchanging my defected ones is the microfiber collection i have. Those cloths are bad ass!
i havent got a prime yet... but thinking should i go down the same path as i have been waiting for so long lol
only a few t3 tab is shown in MWC so far and they wont be available till june i guess.. unless samsung pull out a quad core tab next month, otherwise i am ready for my long time battle too lool
you remind me of someone else who had prime fever but constantly bashed Asus. yet now he talks of getting yet another one...lmao I'm starting to call b.s. on alot of these stories but yours sound believable at least.
I'd say just open it up and check it out. you know you tempted to anyways..lol. if its wifi is and no bad light bleed, then just keep it and enjoy it. it is a good device and people know it. that's why they keep coming back or hanging around. just let us know how it goes. don't feel bad. we have others who "Supposedly" had the fever worse than you and yet they still coming back saying they got another one. whether true or not. they looking like prime crackheads..lol. prime got people hooked and addicted. good reason to be because it is a great device.
I got my device 12/22 from Gamestop. wifi works great. no light bleed. all around good device. never had or needed to exchange. my 1 device worked great from the beginning and I have an early batch one. use it constantly. always performs 100% for me.

Do you have costco near your area? If so, return it and purchase Galaxy Tab 10.1.... Use/rent it until the next batch of tablets arrive from either Asus, Acer, Lenovo.. Samsung.. or whatever. Costco has 90 day return policy (thus, you can rent your tab for 3 month)......
This is what I'm doing.. granted.. I also have Prime atm (bought a Prime, returned it.. but got another Prime as gift that I can't return as it was purchased from Gamestop =/)
Just opened it . Still in the plastic of course lol. Doing my usual very very first app downloads.
1.Wifi Analyzer
2.Speed Test
3.GPS Test (could care less about GPS but testing is fun)
4.Dead pixel test.
5.Light bleed test
From the start testing using Wifi Analyzer it keeps a pretty good wifi signal in my living room. Close to my Galaxy Note Phone, the Prime just jumps up and down a bit not a big deal. Prob the aluminum.
Using Speedtest, i know not the best way but a fast way to check. Getting 14.5 mbps & my internet speed is only rated to 15mbps. Very very good in my book so far with wifi.
In the dark in my bathroom during the boot, best way to check for light bleed fast. I have a small light bleed in the top left corner. Not super bad just barley creeping through. Nothing that would make me box it up right away and bring it back to the store.
Im upgrading FW now. Will report back. Next step is to remove the plastic and inspect for dead pixels. Crossing my finger there isn't any
It does feel good to have the Prime back in my hands.
EDIT: NO dead pixels wohoo!

I have a BJ's & Sams Club no Costco. How are you enjoying your Galaxy Tab? Never opened mine lol. I however have a Galaxy Note which obviously is similar.
How do you compare the Galaxy Tab's screen & colors to the TP. I find after using my Prime & picking up my Galaxy Note the colors seem far punchier on the note.
While vibrant colors are good i still prefer the power of the Prime in ts quad core ness. Like Mickey said in Rocky 2. We need speed, speed speed! Greasy, fast lightning speed! Lol.

I haven't read any BS stories on here yet lol. Maybe im not looking hard enough. I can safely say that all the times i returned my Prime not even 24hrs later i missed it sorely. Even with the problems that some people are having or the ones that i have had its still a far superior tablet to anything currently on the market.
Quick update.
Whoa, just upgraded to the latest OTA. Figured i try GPS for kicks. With wifi "OFF" sitting in my living room it picks up 11-14 Sats in about 5-8 secs. Its cloudy today for reference. With a accuracy of 24 feet. And usually uses about 10-11 of them "in use". I had one with a good GPS but not this good. Especially not being on wifi/
Again to mee GPS does not matter if it works without wifi or not or even at all. This is one of the fun parts the testing lol.

Oh, I owned Galaxy Tab before I purchased Prime. I sold Galaxy Tab when Prime came out... but I returned the Prime I purchased as GPS is important to me (it's funny, but the Prime that I purchased was also from Gamestop but I was able to return it with luck & also it was during the whole Asus announcement fiasco about GPS).
Anyways, it's pointless to compare Prime and Galaxy Tab. When it comes to display, I'll give the slight edge to Prime (Gtab 10.1 doesn't have super amoled)... and if you look at everything else.. SPEC wise, Prime is just superior.
However, when it comes to functionality and my USER experience.. I mostly use Galaxy Tab as it doesn't have the WIFI/GPS problem. I travel often & that mobility is important to me. I hate carrying multiple device (i even purchased bluetooth GPS receiver for Prime but I hate charging & carrying multiple device) & at least with mine, I hardly get any WIFI connection with PRIME when I travel. So, basically.. I mostly use my Prime at home (where I have the control of network setting)... and mostly use Prime for media device.

I've been thinking about that quote last night. How is Asus planning to market Prime when other tablets (especially from asus) drops? Mobile Tech Trendsetters & Early Adopters as Johny Shih put it.. typically are associated with purchasing the latest gadgets. That won't be the case when other Tablets are released... You can't tell a customer 3 month later.. and say.. "purchase a prime & be an early adopter to a device that was released few month ago...."
Don't you find that amusing, and rather poor marketing of Prime in the long run?

I did find it amusing. especially with the early adopter title considering issues being had with too many devices. I'd rather roll with The Mobile Tech Trendsetters. we will always be that since we had the first tegra3 quad core tablets. you could say we started the quad core/high powered/ next evolution of tablet computing.
so I think they need to roll with the trend setter title. early adopter will only bring memories of the gripes many suffered being an "early adopter" lol. I'm laughing now thinkn of all the jokes I seen up here so far in regards to that title. this has been one helluva roller coaster ride with Asus, prime, and this section of the forum.
you right, you can't tell a customer 3 months later he an early adopter still when newer products are released already. but that person can still be the trend setter though. lol.
edit: check out my tegra4 thread..I updated it last night with proof of the second version of tegra4/wayne chip having 8 A15 core CPU and will have between 32-64 GPU cores...directX11 compliant n more. The Godzilla of chips. haven't seen or heard anything that promising or ambitious from anyone.

Speedtest for giggles in my living room. I usually get between 11-14. Pretty damn good considering 15mbps is what my max connection is.

I'm so envious of you being able to use the stylus of galaxy note to annotate those pics..lol cool. I'm seriously considering getting a Note soon. have you heard or seen that new LG Vu? its a huge phablet phone also but has a 4:3 aspect ratio like Ipad so it makes it look even bigger in wider than the note. I like it. plenty of screen area. its screen just as big as note or even larger. it definitely looks larger with 4:3 aspect ratio. which is different. as most use 16:9 ratio or so.

It says upto .. 8 cores. That and the first WAYNE.. especially when it comes to GPU (seems more or less an evolution from Tegra 3 again while the 2nd Wayne seems far more promising).. it looks lackluster again. But the first WAYNE seems.. like it'll be more or less on par with Qualcomm & TI OMAP quad cores. And they'll all be released around the same period.... so, that should be interesting.
We'll see.. the 2nd Wayne to battle against Intels x86 SoC (and possibly others .. i don't feel like doing links atm) won't be out til mid 2013 or so it seems.
Edit: It's interesting that they are creating 2nd Wayne for Windows 8 & are upping the "cores" for it...

The Note is absolutely one of the coolest gadgets ive owned so far. I had a Galaxy S2 before, so with the Note I got used to the screen size fast. Once you go above 4.3" you won't want to go back.
There is so many cool things you can do with the Note's stylus aside from just scribbling notes on a pad or a picture or "S-Pen" as Samsung insists of calling it. You can google pictures then crop your friends head onto another body, trust me the fun is endless. Samsung actually has a contest going on for 100k,50k, & 25k to the 3 developers who come up with the best app that utilizes the S-pen. Which im sure will be something cool.
Not to mention its like a mobile computer which is a huge plus for me. I did briefly see that new LG phone on engadget & slashgear's site. Seems pretty cool too, ill have to read more on it. But i got use to the size of the Note fast, it makes reading XDA on the go that much easier haha . Everything is just that much easier. I could care less if it looks big held up to my ear. Ive actually gotten alot of compliments on it. Plus i don't make many calls anyway, mostly texting, web browsing and emails. On a side note the call quality is insanely good and clear on the Note. Speaker phone is awesome too.
Holding my GF's iphone in my hand it feels like a toy haha. Nothing against Apple they make good phones. I am just not a fan of the locked iOS, and i am sick of seeing everyone with one. I gave my iPhone 4 up long ago and haven't looked back.

Worth buying one now?

I'm potentially getting a used one today to replace my iPad. I'm moving from the apple ecosystem to android. Had an android phone now for a while and would rather have a tablet as well versus incomplete syncing of the two.
I last had an android tab in January and the app scene was very bad for tablets, and I read the prime had a lot of issues.
Did either resolve?
I'm getting it cheap, so I don't mind the infinity coming out and may switch to it later. But want to get a head start on moving my extensive ecosystem to google
As a Prime owner, my advice is to stay far away from anything Asus. It's becoming clear to me they can't fix the issues in this device. I wish I never bought mine.

Wow... Sadly I don't know an alternative non-7 inch android tablet...
I feel your pain, as I'm also interested in a 10" tablet with plenty of storage, and there are no great options at this point. I'm just trying to give you a heads up. Between the slow ass I/O issues that they obviously can't fix, the firmware releases that keep fixing one thing and breaking 3 others, the cheap parts used (search the forum for LCD mura), the poor design choices (good luck connecting to a far away Wifi signal), and the terrible support (read some of the horrible RMA stories here), I wouldn't touch another Asus product with a 10 foot pole.

maybe the best will be to wait a lil bit more and see the TF700. But in any case, I really don't see the point of buying the Tf201 right now, with the 300 offering a very similar experience (imho there some quite recognisable slow downs overally speaking but it's still close enough for the price difference) for a cheaper price, and the Tf700 to be shipped in the following weeks. For those proficient in french, here is a test of the device
http://www.lesnumeriques.com/tablet...pad-infinity-tf700-avec-dock-p13514/test.html
and as far as the wifi goes, it's as smooth and stable as the 300 (if not better). So no matter how many software updates Asus is going to throw at us, it is highly unlikely that our beloved prime Tf201 (yes I still love the tablet even though it pisses me bigtime to have such a mediocre wifi connectivity) going to achieve that performance.
I would look into Samsung if i could do it again or Acer Iconia as a close second.
I would go for it! I am having a wonderful experience with my Prime. It's by far the best Imo. Forums are ruled by people seeking answers to there issues either caused by themselves tinkering with the device or just real issues. Most are quite happy. You should check out the Positive Transformer Prime thread linked to my sig. Then decide for yourself.
I have two primes and one 300. I like them all. My unlocked prime with wookie ROM is the best. It is faster than my laptop. Why not buy a prime if your getting it for a good price?

I generally agree with jj here.. I love my Prime. Yes, there's a few little quirks here and there, but nothing as world ending as some people would have you believe. Compared to the other devices on the market, I'd still go with this one if I had to again.
(Now, if a Nexus 10 comes out.. mmm.. bets might be off

That and I just can't see anyone (in their right mind) that would post positive "complaints" on a developer/troubleshooting forum...
My $.02: I have it, it's OK. I would not buy one again. Basically when you buy a Prime keep in mind that you're buying an "almost ready for beta" product.
Bottom line: if you don't mind beta testing for ASUS (yes, 8 months later and we're still beta testing) then go for it!
If you're getting it for $300 or under then do it. Otherwise go for a Galaxy Tab.
Go for it! been loving mines since I got it in dec. not everyone has issues. jjdevega summed it up best.
I think you have to accept the mindset that you are going to have to tweak your Prime to get everything just right. Coming from an iPad this will be a different experience.
Personally I have experienced all the issues mentioned above on my Prime. I even RMA'd and refunded my 1st unit. However, I have been having a lot of fun applying the different tweaks and experimenting with what works best for my individual use case. I can tell you that my Prime is absolutely BLAZING right now - it is completely stable and performance is beyond my expectations.
I was pessimistic for a long time, but now I know I prefer having the options (because of an amazing developer community) to tinker and modify.
If this is appealing to you, the Prime is a great choice.
well , i think i have been top complainer on the prime. However i love this tablet.
its not perfect yet but i trust in asus that they start working on it now the google tablet is done.
some weeks ago i was really pessimistic but developers like wookie, motley baboo, ckhtml and more, and demandarin for his help with submitting issues, gave back hope.
and tbh, asus support has been great since tf101 however something went realy wrong with ICS on both devices , cant ignore that.
conclusion: for a good price i would buy it. buy with s/n c4 or higher.
keep calm and see what asus is offering in the future. their new devices is still kinda like in beta mode, endless problems waiting to be fixed. im not even sure nexus 7 is safe to use. best is hold ur horses and see what others review abt it.
the TF700T is supposed to come out next month at $499, which is what the prime sells for new right now. so I would keep this in mind when buying a used prime...
I have had my Prime since December and it has been fine. However right now I would recommend waiting until Mid-July and buying the TF Infinity. It will start at the same base price ($500) has a better screen and a plastic panel that should fix any wifi/gps problems people have had with the Prime. Plus it is compatible with practically all TF-Prime accessories including the keyboard dock.
Right now that is likely to be the best choice for a 10" Android tablet.
good read
If money isn't an concern, I would get a prime.
I as well moved from the IPAD. It's great for what I use it for, however my wife uses it as well.
I wanted her to have her own and so I started the search for another tablet that would suit the needs I have.
After roughly three months of research it came down to two things.
Either buying a Transformer Prime or TF300. Or waiting for the TF700 to hit in July.
Personally I've seen hi-res screens, unless your a graphics designer and your going to do EXTREME graphics rendering and modeling
(which at that point you should be using a PC or MAC desktop - my thoughts that is. )
then getting the Prime is the way to go. I got mine a few days ago, and it's done everything my IPad can do + some, no issues with Wifi - havent tested the GPS because I don't need it for that.
I've used several SD cards and again no issues what so ever.
The ONLY thing I will say in making your decision, is always get the bigger storage size, I have the 64gb and It's EXACTLY what I want / need!

i second this... i have had it with Asus. i was one of the first one to get Prime cause i love android. but Asus's ability to integrate the software is driving me crazy. and not to mention how they handled GPS issue... me personally are jumping ship back to ipad..... at least i won't get ANR everything 10mins.....
I'm also happy with the prime so far. My only concern about is that after months of daily using I really see a big advantage in the 7 inch form factor in many use cases. There was a great video interview with Matias Duarte on the verge about the design of the nexus 7 tablet two days ago or so and it nailed it on the head. So my next tablet will be the Nexus one, but I'll keep the prime as well.

I have a confession - I miss my Prime

I've had 2 Primes including a very early model that I had to RMA and eventually got an ASUS refund. My 2nd tab I got from BBY in May and recently exchanged for an Infinity. I think the Infinity is ok, but my 2nd Prime was finally just setup right so it was running fine.
For me, it was actually kinda fun tweaking the Prime and playing with the numerous mods that were available. I was enjoying the active community and the challenge of getting the right combination of tweaks to make it scream. Of course, I just got it dialed-in and running great when the Infinity exchange option popped up. I was within days of unlocking to play with Motley kernel and Androwook ROM.
Now the Infinity is a great piece of kit, but the options for mods are very limited (it seems). Other than the screen, there is not very much difference. Now that GPS works, I really find it quite useless. There is not much difference in performance compared to my dialed-in Prime. There is really not very much real world difference in wifi for my daily use. There are very few ROMs to consider, and overall the dev community has not quite ramped up yet. Also consider that several purchased games no longer work - Asphalt 6, Madden, etc.
Oh well, the grass is not always greener. Maybe I will feel better once JB comes out, but things are pretty slow so far.
No - for now I'm not interested in trading for your Prime. I'm gonna hope JB comes out before my return window expires.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Well done for sharing that with the group, don't you feel better now for confessing?
I'm really looking forward to jellybean on my prime. Can't wait to see how it improves things. Even as it is, I wouldn't change it for any single tablet out there.
Sent from my Desire S using xda app-developers app
Yeah I gotta say the Tf700 development section is still pretty quiet, this is balanced by many less complaints in the general section. For those less interested in in the fight to perfection the infinity is a better choice, but if you like having to earn that last 10% with research and experimentation, I agree, the prime was better.
When I bought the Prime, I did so knowing full well that the GPS didn't work and the Wifi was spotty, but it's never once been an actual issue for me. Between tethering the GPS from my phone and the dongle I've been fine, but I've actually only ever used the dongle once since I got it. All it's current issues can be fixed with firmware updates, and most likely JB that's coming soon. The Prime really is a great tablet and I personally prefer it over the 300T despite it's IO and gaming issues. A quick reboot has been enough to fix any of the games I wanted to run.
All the hate for the Prime is overblown because no one who's actually happy is going to post, which makes this forum turn into a cesspool of complaints. Everyone who's enjoying their Prime has been long since pushed off the forums by people who just want to raise a stink. The only reason I come here anymore is for updates from Gary, which while infrequent are at least enough to tell me that JB is on the way and our IO problems have been fixed in the kernel that's coming as a part of that.
I always assumed that since the Prime and Infinity were so similar, development would just carry between them- obviously not the case. What a strange situation for everyone having gotten refunds...
you forgot increased Quad Core processor speed.
Working Wifi (as GPS)
HD MP front and back camera that blow the Prime's away.
, although I didn't have major problems with my Prime than the weak Wifi/no GPS. I don't miss it a-bit.
In part because it was easy to back-up all my apps and transition them right into the Infinity without missing a beat.
Think the 300 has the same I/O issues the prime has. 80 seconds for a simple 1000 insert transaction!

I miss my prime too! The infinity looks nice but runs no where near as well as my prime with androwook and tweaks. I feel kinda hand cuffed at the moment with the infinity. Some games dont work, animation isnt as smooth on ones that do, probably because of the resolution. General performance is slower, and it is currently incapable of copying large files to the microSD. Sometimes I think I should have stuck with the prime, it gets a bad rap.

Running JB nightly on my prime, and have to say: WOW, its smooth as butter.
Since the install no ANR of FC
Used my Nexus 7 for about 2 weeks until I realised there was nothing I could do with it that the Prime doesn't do
equally good or better (I'm not a gamer). Selling the Prime was never an option, so now it's top dawg again with
the N7 relegated to wife-device.

Love my prime
I'll jump out there and join the folks praising the Prime. I bought the Prime in April and was impressed with what it could do, despite its well documented shortcomings. It was not until I unlocked it and started flashing custom ROMs that I really got into this device. I love tweaking it and discovering new things about Android that I never even knew it could do. Plus, being able to use Google Now on cm10 is pretty slick. Unlocking, flashing, etc. is very straight forward, unlike my HTC Evo 3D which apparently requires nothing short of an act of God to root.

The Prime is a fine piece of equipment. And if you're into custom roms, right now is a good time to own one! If you're new, get an infinity now, obviously, but if you have a prime there's little need to upgrade; your options with the Prime to enhance performance are pretty solid.
I enjoy my Prime much for the same reason I enjoy (and still enjoy) my Samsung Galaxy S (i9000). It's just a lot of admittedly geeky fun to experiment and tweak things. It's that constant striving and searching for perfection that has kept me preoccupied and always learning new things.
The SGS is a really old device and yet the development scene is still really active and something I always look forward to checking out everyday. Before the dev scene picked up, there really was a lot of dissatisfaction and complaints surrounding the SGS as well. GPS was awful, lag all over the place, internal storage issues and what not but those mostly are all things of the past. The only issues now just come with the phone's age I guess so it's getting harder for it to keep up with newer games, but then again I'm no hard core gamer though but I haven't encountered much issues with all the games I've tried.
The Prime's development scene isn't as active as I had hoped, but I guess it's better off versus some other newer devices for now. Don't know if that will change soon enough as people start defecting to other devices, but for now I'm happy. Sure, there's a lot still needing to be fixed and I guess with a new kernel coming along with official JB on the Prime sooner or later many issues will probably be resolved. Running JB via TeamEOS's JB ROM has been an excellent experience so far for me except for a few missing features (camera issues)..and that's with it still on an older kernel too!
Of course people like me are actually a minority since a majority of consumers probably just want to use something as is and works well out of the box. Nothing wrong with that, but I guess it really just depends on the user attitude and preferences. Not a lot are willing to or have the time to research and go about doing some admittedly risky things to their expensive devices. I'm a perfectly girly girl btw but I love this geeky side of me.
The Prime could have definitely been a better device than it is, but I love it and the whole experience I've been having with it none the less. If not for development and the constant search for satisfaction, I'm sure my Prime would end up collecting dust somewhere.
Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to share
now that you have confessed your sins welcome to heaven young lad
