To the folks who are claming that Sprint is throttling them due to there net speeds sucking or download speeds suck. They don't throttle. Prl update won't fix it. If your losing connection all the time dropped calls and your location has good signal normally and net speeds.
Then you probably have a bad radio hardware issue with the phone. This goes to rooted users too if you flashed your kernel right and rom.
A bad radio will cause all sorts of issues slow speed no connection lost calls. No matter what prl you use or network edit you try will not fix it.
Have Sprint take a look at it they will tell you if your radio is spanked. My first evo 3d had a spanked radio brand new outta the box a few other folks same thing. Anyways those that have issues may wanna get it looked into.
Will I need the sprint insurance for them to look at it and fix it? Of can they look at it let me know and then ship it off to my 3rd party insurance?

i think sprint just sucks theres nothing wrong with my radio it pulls 2 mbps all day on verizon
Sprint just sucks.
My 3d moves slow during the day & blazing fast at night. It rarely reached 1mb+ but it's definitely way faster @ night! What is up with that lol

Using the 00001 prl data speeds are almost at 2 mbs down. With latest pro update its .08 mbs down. Its sad that I get better speed on another carriers towers. Sprint used to be alright, but they are seriously falling behind.

My E3D has been fine with 3G data - it depends where you're at... I live in a state capitol, and we still don't have 4G. My gripe is with my Wi-Fi - cable broadband SUCKS. They can throw nifty catchwords like PowerBoost at us, but one thing is clear: cable broadband systems for homeowners in municipalities are still 'node' based - when everyone in the same neighborhood is streaming video or surfing, the bandwidth drops. I can't wait for a good 4G WiMax connection, or a VPN...

I think what he is referring to is the fact that in your original post you said it could be a hardware issue, which means that if its a hardware issue then the same will occur when on verizons network while roaming. The other poster is getting great performance with verizon so therefore it has to mean that sprints network is ****. And to be quite frank, sprints network is garbage right now and that ain't no secret.

What I stated in the op was if your normal signal was fine normally and data was fine in your area. Then outta the blue WiFi was messed up disconnecting and signal kept dropping calls and nothin seemed to work on stock then your radio is messed up.
Sprint's data and calls are fine for me best signal ever.

Uh, well as a 14 year old there are a lot of things you simply just don't understand, hence your clueless post(no offense). If you buy a new car and it breaks down, should I not ***** about it because we never always used to have cars? If I am at the airport and my flight is delayed should I not ***** about it because air travel wasn't always around? If my gps unit stops working should I not get upset because not too long ago we were all using maps? I hope you get my point, this isn't about taking anything for granted. As technology becomes more advance the more we depend on them to get through each and everyday. Also, in my examples these are all things that we pay hard earned money for, so if your a paying customer then you expect some sort of working service in return.
Who is paying the cell phone bill in your house? Obviously it isn't you so what do you care if something goes out, it aint your money and its not like you can go and walk into an att/tmobile/verizon store and get service. You are stuck with whatever your parents decide to get, and thats it. On the other hand I bet if one of your parents gets upset because of crappy service, they aren't gonna say well cell phones haven't been around that long so its ok. No, they will find another carrier to go and spend more money in the process for better service. Thats not taking something from granted, thats just wanting something to work as it should.
I have been with sprint for over 10 years(you know, since you were 4 years of age) and for the first 8.5 years service has been exceptional but the last 1.5 years has been horrible and it seems like its getting worse and worse everyday. I travel quite a bit for my job so whether I am at home in atlanta or any major city from atlanta to new york city its the same crappy service. In the day time 3g is laughable at best and it only seems to work fairly well from 2am to 4am when the network isn't as cluttered. How can I do my job effectively and efficiently if the technology I am paying for takes a step back? If I have to send/receive important emails or any other form of communication and I am late because of the slow network then that could cost me a lot of time and a lot of money.

That may be true for a very small fraction of customers but its not a secret that sprints network is in the toilet right now, thats not my opinion thats a fact. Hopefully when all this network vision stuff is completed with sprint then their service will improve but if not sprint will continue to bleed customers more then ever before. Its getting to a point now that the extra savings compared to the other carriers isn't even worth it anymore.

Well down south the speeds are fine. My first Evo 3d phone had some crappy data and signal was wiggin out seemed fine in other areas then would drop to nothing. Had it swapped out and everything runs fine no issues. I have been all the way to Michigan and to Flordia with no issues. So I have no idea why you folks complain about your data speeds. I know at times towers can get slammed but I doubt it would happen all the time. I would for the sake of things get sprint to check your phone out can't hurt.

Hey guys, long time xda/android user here, and I am currently still on my folks family plan with at&t with a captivate (rooted/rom of course). I was thinking of branching off and going with a carrier that still offers unlimited data, or bumping up to 2 gigs with att ($25). I want to watch movies, play pandora, all that, without having to get on wifi, and without worry of going over my limit. What do you guys think? Are you able to watch netflix on 3g without a lot of buffering with sprint? How are your own 4g/3g speeds? How do you like sprint in general? I am in texas and will be around midland, dallas, and houston. I ask in this forum because I am interested in the photon, and the data heavy people are definitely in here.

As long as you are in a good sprint service area you shouldn't have any issues. I would try sprint out by starting up a new contract and if you like it then port your number over from att.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
And does anyone know if I signed up for a contract, if I didn't like the service, could I terminate without a fee within a certain date?
I don't know about Texas, but I'm up in northeast Wisconsin, in a small town, and while there's no 4G until you hit Chicago, the 3G is surprisingly strong up here, as long as you don't get too rural.
As for the canceling with no fee, you have 30 days on Sprint. See www DAWT sprint DAWT com/landings/returns/
About the Photon, since you mentioned that you are rooted with your Captivate, I'd assume you'll be doing the same thing with the Photon. Rooting is easy enough, but unlocking the bootloader took me the better part of yesterday, and I've been doing this stuff (flashing ROMs and such) since the day I got my original Evo 4G, sometime in August of 2010.
Although the unlock proved difficult and time consuming, a good chunk of that time was waiting for all the requisite files to download over the Photon's 3G connection.
Other random thoughts: I really like the Photon, this thing absolutely flies. This implementation of MotoBlur isn't too bad, either, although I prefer AOSP-based Android any day of the week. (Here's hoping for CyanogenMod one day soon.) Oh, and the 3G radio in this thing is way better than the one in my old Evo 4G. I get much better data speeds, to the point where it's noticeable in everyday use.
I hope this helps, and welcome to Sprint! Unlimited data is awesome.
To me, the best part of Sprint is the Google Voice integration. Which, by the way, not only means advanced voicemail, but also dirt cheap international calls and really convenient texts. With Google Voice enabled, I can send a text with my number from virtually everywhere: web, Google Chrome widget (sooo useful), iPad, oh you name it, and then have history of the texts stored neatly on the web.
If you're worrying about coverage, know that the $69/mo (+ $10/mo) plan covers 450 roaming minutes with Verizon. Pretty much covers all sorts of emergency "NOOO SIGNALLL OMGGGG" situations.
wow, thanks guys for the replies. I think I will try Att's 2 gig plan for a month, then consider switching if I get close to the cap. Yeah, I'm hoping that unlocking the bootloader and such will become easier once more people jump on board to the dev scene, and people have more time to play with it. I watched a couple of video reviews that talked about the radio and consistently getting more bars than the evo in many areas, and the headset is pretty loud, both of which are more important to me than 3d. Didn't know about the roaming minutes, that is great information as well.
If anyone has anything else to share, please do, I'll keep you guys posted with what I do in the future, thanks!
Im in fort worth and switched from T-Mobile I am enjoying the unlimited data and yes I stream netflix on 3g at work all the time and it's a crappy area so sprint has surprised me big time.

Where is this number of minutes specified in the TOS ?
technically, as long as you stay under 50% of your total voice minutes while roaming, they wont complain much... And if you bounce off that barrier, they will usually call u first and tell u to knock it off..
My wife and I purposely used over 10gigs of roaming data each 2 months I a row and didn't even get talked to
YMMV

there is no finite number of minutes allocated to roaming before their panties get bunched up. The way the ToS reads (paraphrased) it's 'the majority of' or greater than 50% I believe..
if you use 3k minutes and 1k are roaming minutes, they aren't going to care.
I have been getting unusable 3G speeds for the past month. I can't get past 100 kb/s, average around 50-60. Is there anything I can tell Sprint to try and resolve this, or somehow talk them into getting out of the contract without the etf. I have never had a problem with Sprint, but if I can't use anything other than WiFi I shouldn't have to pay for it. I know I am not the only that has these speeds and it should be brought to their attention.
You can just continue to take it. Sprint is giving a lot of us the shaft with poor 3g speeds.

Imagine if everyone had that kind of attitude.
I don't mind Sprint. The point is that when I opened my lines 3G speeds were usable, not out of nowhere they are not. I shouldn't have to pay to cancel a contract when they have completely prevented me from using 3G. I am not the only one. Why should we just bend over and take it? If it wasn't for the persistent efforts of dedicated individuals HTC would have never provided an unlock for boot loaders (as ****ty as their technique is).

If by attitude you mean thinking rationally and with a little common sense(not directing this towards you specifically).
Sprint is not going to come to your home and put a 3g tower in your back yard so the smartest thing to do is take your business else where..I agree you should not have to pay to get out of your contract but what choice do you have?Either turn forced roaming on and use verizon towers until Sprint cancels your service for you.Or continue to try and get them to waive the ETF
So to keep on topic here..What can you do about 3G speeds? Nothing much really, you either have a good 3G signal or you dont.(barring your phone isn't defective)
Sorry man and good luck.

I'm on my way out also. I just ordered another phone with a competitor. I have had enough with sprint dropping the ball and making mistakes and making the customers pay for it. They can keep their $350.00 cancellation fee and all the other upcharges. If the new service works at my house and work, I am out. All these people that keep siding with sprint while being bent over really need to get a grip. I have been a customer for 7 years and to be treated this way is a joke. 3g speeds are nonexistent and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. I rather be throttled than not be able to use my phone as a data device.
I have no 4g and hardly one bar at my house. 3g will only work on the airave. Even after all this they will not let me out of my contract. Even the customer service rep sided with me this morning. Yeah...I know i'm complaining and why don't I just leave. Well paying to get out should not be something I have to do when they are not providing there side of the deal. I have a $100.00 cancel fee and at this point it seems worth it to just bow out. If my other service doesn't work then I will fight till the fee is waived and ride contract free.

Is it really so bad to get kicked off a service that sucks so bad we have to resort to swapping PRL's back and forth to just get it to work though?

What was your normal data usage?
Gee where have you been??? There is no unlimited data roaming. You need to read the fine print or even listen to the commercials they state it very clearly in the commercials that unlimited data on smart phones is on Sprint towers only. People have been getting their accounts terminated by Sprint for excessive data roaming for the last couple of years. Do a search of all forums and you will probably see a lot of threads. In fact if you want to get out of your contract that is one of the easiest ways. Install a Verizon PRL and go crazy on the data. Careful though, it also states in your contract that Sprint can bill you for the overage.

Wow. EXACTLY the same thing just happened to me today. Said it was for excessive data roaming which is bull**** because my sister had more roaming data and she still has service. My only guess is that it is a blanket excuse if you use a lot of regular data because they can't cancel you for that. Extremely bummed out and pissed about this right now.
EDIT: this last pay period was the only time I have roamed on data for this phone. They said they sent out 3 warning but we didn't receive any. Sorry if this sounds ranting or anything, I am just really frustrated with the whole situation.

Just hope they boot you and thats it, you could get the boot and charged for how much data you've used on top of it.

It's just funny how there are people on both ends of the spectrum:
One side is using too much data, not reading the contract, and getting booted for it.
The other side is using too much data, has read the contract, and is trying to get booted for it.
Nobody is talking about the fact that both sides are hogging the network and slowing down data for everyone else out there (whether Verizon's or Sprint's network). But hey, at least your going away.

this is why sometimes i miss tmobile
and then i think about the 4 month straight throttle they threw on me
they couldnt even call of their beast when i was suppose to be unthrottled
and on that note i couldnt imagine paying outrages overages on data that verizon and ATT charge
thank god for the happy median  sprint

He is violating 2 terms of conditions, not only one doing this. Chances are you were also warned before hand. If you weren't warned before hand then I believe the OP violating the ToS on two conditions is grounds enough.
I also don't understand why the OP put "usage on an unlimited plan" in the thread title. What does that have to do with his termination? Surely it is for empathy but I don't think he knew exactly he signed onto in regards to his excessive roaming use.
I think he was talking about me running the client
if it was an option i would gladly turn in my phone if they would let me out of my contract but its not. I have been lied to over and over about 4g coming to phoenix and i stuck with them because i knew it would get better. in the 18 months i have been with sprint not only have i been lied to about 4g coming but the 3g service has gotten to the point where its unusable. now sprint is changing over to lte that means my phone is pretty much useless its not a moral issue for me i refuse to pay for something im not getting.

Perhaps eventually, but they are a long way from the total shutdown type of bankruptcy. At worst, they'll do a restructuring bankruptcy, but I don't even think it will come to that. They have made some bad decisions, but in the very important metrics of customer satisfaction and retention, they are doing quite well. A company can recover from bad technology investments (Lightsquared, ClearWire). When they start hemorrhaging customers, that's when you really have to worry.

It's LightSquared's fault... That, and putting all their eggs into the iPhone basket. But to be honest, it hasn't had a chance to bounce back from it yet.
A lot of people have been thinking about this, but no one has wanted to say it.
Sprint will get bailed out if they were ever forced to close up shop. At&t and verizon are too big to be the only consumer choices.

it has 0 to do with the iPhone...They already stated they were on track for meeting the iPhone goals much much sooner than the deadline. I think over a year sooner than scheduled...
the thing is the analyst is missing some key things when he went on to spout about spectrum as that is NOT a problem for sprint with clearwire and also their own 800MHz LTE with 1900LTE they will be on par with Verizon at the least bit...
The one thing that is a little concerning is the maturities of the debt due in 2015...Doesn't give NetworkVision much time to show its wings and get more customers...Though with any other piece of debt they likely will not have much trouble rolling that amount to a later date paying a lil more premium...
I've been hearing this same tune every few years about Sprint. I've been with Sprint 11 years now, and to be honest I'm considering switching carriers for the first time.
Over the past 2 years my personal experience with their customer service has extremely poor. I've considered VZW but I have to take into account data limits.

Well I can say that personally from my experience with the "NetworkVision" rollouts that they have done nothing in my area. They completed 1 data speed upgrade and 3 data capacity upgrades (I live 1 mile from a sprint tower) and they have done NOTHING to help voice/data services. My phone actually defaults to roaming now, so I will just wait for sprint to cancel me.
If sprint wanted to avoid this they should've began their "NetworkVision" rollout before they launched the iphone...Hell they should've done it before they launched the OG Evo 4g. They had NO business having smartphones on their dumb network. Now they are scrambling because people are saying screw it and they are paying an extra $20-$30 a month to go to verizon or at&t.
I really, really hope sprint can make it. But from what i've seen from these tower upgrades they haven't made anything better in my area.

Those are NOT NetworkVision rollouts that your seeing on that website showing "data capacity upgrade" and such...those are mere lil band aid patches and should not be used in reference to what networkvision rollouts are...the NV rollouts involve a complete revamp of the cabinets and backhaul that will make dramatic differences in most of the troubled areas...
To put in perspective the backhaul changes are all being re-done to fiber or microwave based and the current backhaul is using the ancient bundled T1 based...

no, people just expect more then the average person which is dumb in my opinion, it's like buying a car and expecting it to fill itself up for you, but if the gas pump is crowed then you should be ahead of everyone else just because you want gas -_-, i've been with sprint for 5-6 years now and my parents have been with them for 13+ i've never seen an issue and if there was, either i took care of it or i gave sprint a call for a simple refresh, people that complain about sprint service probably complain about their drinks being too cold at a diner -_-

Ah, I got ya. I just wonder how long (or if) for that matter sprint will do that where I live. Verizon currently has LTE here and it is fast, 20mbs down. But I am not in a large enough city that I think sprint will upgrade their towers within the next couple of years here. I really hope they do. Because I really don't want to leave for verizon. But it get tougher as each day goes by.

In my area VZW has LTE, USC is revamping all towers for LTE rollout, and Sprint still has about 100k download speeds. At the best I see 300k, it's getting old, it's been this slow for almost 2 straight years now. Unlimited....? Sure you can have all the data you can use, it's as slow as a dial up connection, but have at it,lol.
As far as the comment about Sprint meeting the iCrap expectations, yes they are meeting the expectations on selling them, but (and it was posted here somewhere) they are still losing money on the whole iCrap thing and will be for at least 2 years. Just because they're meeting the sales expectations doesn't mean it's making them money.
I was a fan of sprints until i.started consistently getting 70k down the past 15 months, hoping it would get better, hoping....hoping.....never happened. I'm willing to pay the extra dollars for the bandwidth on VZW. What good is unlimited data at a trickle? I'm out when this contracts up. I like sprint, really...but no data speed on a smartphone ain't gonna cut it.

Where are ya located?
NetworkVision is going to be complete in a couple years, at least the tower upgrade and backhaul parts with most if not all being complete during next year...
They have already started up in NJ, Chicago, and a bunch others...I wouldn't pay much attention to the network.sprint.com site as the stuff there is nothing releated to the NetworkVision upgrades...
Just for an idea, those areas where you have horrid speed with great signal and its because the tower is over capacity...the backhaul change will make a huge difference.
Each T1 line is capable of about 1.5Mbps and bundles T1 lines is what's used now...microwave based backhaul is capable of over 1Gbps....each is going to microwave or fiber so that's a giant leap in capacity...

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/sprint-cancelling-early-upgrades/
(memo is in the link above)
Like dominoes, Sprint's consumer-friendly policies continue to fall one at a time. Citing "high costs," the Now Network will begin discontinuing its practice of allowing customers to upgrade their phone 10-14 days prior to the official date of eligibility. According to the memo leaked by TechnoBuffalo, the program will cease to exist as of June 1st. It sounds like this policy change is an unfortunate consequence of the company's large investments in iPhones and its still-dormant LTE network. It may not be enough to convince many Sprint customers to jump ship, but this isn't the first cost-cutting measure put forth by Dan Hesse's team -- and we have a hard time believing it will be the last. We've reached out to Sprint for official comment and will update you as soon as we have word.

not sure why this is that big of a deal? is that really that much of an incentive?
unless your early eligibility window directly coincided with a major phone release (like the iphone5 which i hear has the same cloaking capability as Predator and is run by cold fusion with a display that beams directly to your brain) and you HAVE to be the first one to get it...then who cares if you have to wait until you are actually eligible for the upgrade to get it??

Yes it will definitely happen at some point. everywhere the iPhone goes eliminates the "unlimited Data Plan".
Verizon today also said that they're no longer allowing people to be grandfathered in. So no unlimited for anyone.
But i agree, this isn't that big of news too me but it is somewhat heartbreaking to see. First they destroyed the Premiere Members plan and now this.

IMO that'd be their kiss of death. It's the ONLY advantage they have compared to ATT and VZ. With all the other niggling changes (the change in how discounts are applied, the change in how shared plans are accounted for, etc) they are barely ahead of VZ in price for me (4 4G phones - what where's 4g?? - and 1 basic phone, and i can get away with 4gb data most months no problem) and if the network doesn't get better, i'm gone, let alone how fast I'd bail if they limited their unlimited...

I still do not believe that iPhone has made connection slow for others and Sprint has said (if their truth to it or not) that iPhone has not slowed down data speeds for us other phones.
iPhone is not the problem, it's people who are with VZW who obviously don't mind paying a premiere price for their phone bills. Sprint is playing catch up with these other companies and becoming more and more of a elite company. no more of this VZW>ATT>SPRINT crap. they will be the 3 headed monsters in due time

It probably cost more money to update the staff & the system on the few minutes they took to address it.

Very possible it will. I've read an article (PCWorld, I think it was) that explained it clearly. Each carrier purchases/rents a certain amount of data spectrum. Verizon and AT&T started throttling and limiting data because usage on their respective spectrums were getting close to the limit. NOW, taking that into consideration, Sprint very literally owns/rents half of the spectrum that Verizon and AT&T do. So, what does that tell you? Eventually, even though they are not ready to state it publicly, chances are Sprint will abandon unlimited data.

True story, sir.
The thing is that Sprint always releases their flagship HTC phone in about the middle of May. Many people's upgrade date is June 1st, so that 14 days allows people who want to upgrade have the ability too pre-order. Now I hope that Sprint and HTC work together and make their flagship phone released on June 1st.

Honestly guys do you really think the Iphone is what pulls in the data? I'll give you an example. With my evo 3D, I pulled in over 9GB's last month on 3G and a little 4G(no torrenting) but both of my sisters own the iphone and they used 4 GB's together on our shared plan. One is somewhat tech-savvy but is on it constantly while the other uses it mainly for phone and pandora. Most iphone users don't know how to rape the unlimited data plans like I do. It's only going to be unlimited for so long so why not use it up. You want to complain you should complain to the average user on this site. We are the people using up the data not most of the iphone users.

I'd rather not look at it as a "use as much as I can while it's still free" situation. If I need to download something significant, I'll use my home computer on broadband. I rarely download new ROMs directly with my phone. I'd rather not contribute to Sprint even having to consider throttling by only downloading what I need to with my phone so I can use more when I really have to.

sprint shouldn't consider throttling because people are downloading things with their phone, thats the whole point of havnig an unlimited data plan, to not have to nit pick when and which files to download
it'd be different if i was downloading movies to my phone, to then transfer to my computer instead of just using my computers broadband, but why wouldn't a user with unlimited data download a file through the phone, when the file is for the phone?
lets all stop streaming music also, i mean we could download it with our computers, then transfer it to our phones, then make a playlist, that'd save sprint from having to throttle!
