Curious to know if an ICS compatible kernel exists or if it needs to be built?

Is there anything stopping anyone from building such a thing?

it will come with the OTA update if it needs one!
Umm I haven't seen one. Might check with x. I know he was working on an ics rom between some other things last I checked we don't have a currently running ics rom available that would necessitate a kernel but lack of kernel may be part of the issue from getting it going to better answer the question. (I hope) I could be wrong though.

mine has a hacked kernel but its by no way working the right way for my ics build

I'm not even kidding, I was wondering if it was possible to compile a donut rom from source that would work on this device. I was going to post in development, because this question is related to development, but I'm going to post in Q&A just to be sure. cupcake would also be fine I guess.

just as you said, just for kicks really I just want to do it.
I imagine the two deal breakers to overcome are compatible bootloaders and functioning kernel.
I know on older devices as 2.2 got upgraded to 2.3 some required updated bootloaders. I imagine there's a way around it, but going 3 to 4 generations back has to in some way play a role with bootloader compatibility.
Kernel should be possible. From how I understand, ics is ported to our phones by using a patched kernel.

I know that you have to update your bootloader... but is it backwards compatible? I used the same hboot version to boot gingerbread and froyo on my inspire when i had it. I wonder if the rom just has to be made and the kernel that we're using now could be backwards compatible.

A bunch of different phones are getting ICS really fast, where are all the ICS roms for the GSII?

not sure exactly what happened but they are working hard on an international version, threads have been closed due to other people's stupidity if i remember correctly
What phones? Only the Galaxy Nexus has anything but a hacked-up alpha build.
ics
i'm using unnamed 1.3 + ICScrewed 1.1.1 right now
it's the closest thing you can get for i777 so far
I guess parents don't teach their kids patience anymore.
Wait and see, it'll be here eventually.
We will never get ICS. Lol. You'll see ICS when it's built. Not sure if you think just because you post a thread about it that its going to get here any faster. The only info you'll get from this is speculation anyways.
Nah I've been on android since the hero so I know how the waiting game works, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything that I didn't.
The ICS waiting game will be longer than most due to the hardware acceleration. Until the libs for hardware acceleration are released and a 3.0 kernel ICS will work but not as smoothly. We've got ICS working o the Atrix but its based on the 2.6 kernel so while it works its not ideal.

Where I can find this ICS version for Atrix to test ?
I see all these devices getting ICS, hell even vibrant and captivate have a port, and the only 2 threads i saw that mentioned ICS being worked on, are no longer active in development, so whats the deal? ICS themes are cool and all but theme is a theme, i want the full ice cream goodness. Is there anyone currently working on a 4.0 ROM?
Yes, multiple devs are currently working on a port. I believe codeworx is getting very close.

i'm not flaming although it will probably look like I am - why are people so impatient about ICS? I have never seen so many "where's ICS?" threads compared to the Gingerbread update, for example.
I agree however you can't blame android enthusiasts for being overly excited about the release of ics. Although gingerbread was a great release, ics is much more of a major release because of it basically merging gingerbread with honeycomb, making it unlike any other android release to date.

They're working on it with the I9100.
Personally, I'm waiting until there's a kernel source drop for the Linux 3.0.9 kernel for I9100 ICS - I'll start porting work then.
ICS ports based on 2.6.35 are interim hackjobs.
(yes, 3.6.35 was a typo)

You mean 2.6.35.
Wrong. He means 4.6.35.
On topic. These ports are going to be like HP Touchdroids for a while I bet. Buggy.

Because it's been a year since GB.
Not trying to sound impatient, I was following a couple deb's and saw that they had stalled/stopped development and couldn't find any other threads with active ics development. More curious to see if it's being worked on or waiting for my leaks

More leaks*
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Mainly waiting for more leaks - It's luck of the draw whether a device's vendor-proprietary libraries will work with ICS or not.
They apparently got lucky with the I9000/Captivate, not so lucky with the I9100.
You have to keep in mind that it is EXTREMELY rare for there to be an AOSP device bringup to be completed in any reasonably functional form before an official vendor firmware for a given device (or at least a very similar device) becomes available.

Um, NO. Your wrong. 2.6.35 was a kernel for gb, and he was saying that all these ICS ports are coming with hacked gb kernels, they aren't even being released/leaked with the "real deal" ICS kernel.

So are most devs waiting for the rezounds ics ota to leak or are some working on porting ics from the sensation leak and or the nexus? I know it will be a while, but was just wondering if anyone knew anything.

I think Dmeadows started on porting the ICS leak from the Sensation but not sure if he is still working on it.
Rezound is scheduled to get the OTA update soon based on what HTC said.

We don't have a kernel to run it. You can port sensation gingerbread for example because we have a gingerbread kernel. I am also not sure how it would work out with the larger screen resolution.
Not that I talk to the devs, but I'm guessing if you want everything to be working, it's best to wait for the manufacturer to release the compatible files/drivers/etc instead of trying to hack things together because it just gets messy and nothing will work that well. I'm guessing once HTC releases the official ICS build you'll see AOSP ports shortly after.

The thunderbolt development has been on hold for months now... I run Liquid 3.2 with the imo kernel and it really is amazing. Like anyone else though I want more. Is it just me or is Team BAMF being selfish? How could they release a ROM without the RUU? I am grateful towards them but the truth is after being a sense fanboy for ever and finally giving AOSP a chance I will never look back. I tried the leak and it just brought back old angry memories. The lag to me is unbearable for a 1ghz 768 mb phone with ICS. I am sure the desensed version is better but here is my real question. Can AOSP developers start working on AOSP roms without the RUU? And do you guys think we will have any good AOSP roms untill the kernel source is released?
The only reason why I think I can be totally wrong right now is...if BAMF was being selfish why wouldn't they release the new radio? Unless they didn't update the radio I can't see a reason as to why they would hold back.
I just really can't wait for an official legit Liquid ICS AOSP rom with a new imo kernel build from source no de-compiling.
Is there anything about what I am saying that is wrong or doesn't make sense?

Not necessarily a noob but far from an expert... I posted this is q&a because I am looking for answers not to be judged..
They held back because it was a test build from April. I bet there isn't a new radio or hboot with the test as it was a test. I also would put money down that the reason the build is so laggy is because it is a test. If you're worried about the lag and want a functioning ics rom then I don't understand why you haven't flashed liquid ics. Everything works and I have used it as a dd since they got data working with it.

Yeah I did see that liquid rom... would you say that rom is anything as smooth as liquid 3.2 GB? Also I did not know that the leak was a a test build from April...that is crazy.
thanks for the info!
Where the heck did the Liquid ICS rom with working data go?
The build date in there is listed as April. I haven't tried liquid 3.2 as it was based on an old version of cm7 so I can't compare to that but it is smoother than any rom I've used on the tbolt to date.

It says 1x but you'll get at least 3g and even 4g speeds.

It shows 1x but it is actually getting 4g. I did some speed tests of 12.5 mobs.

i havent checked in the RUU if there is new radio(s) in it, but often times RUU's are not released at the request of the leaker
they're more identifiable than a rom made off of them, and the debug/tracking apks are removed from roms made from them
for the inc2 i was asked to remove the debug apps from the rom before releasing, and that would not be possible in the RUU
no one is entitled to anything either way....someone gave files to a certain individual/group in the hopes they would do whats best for the masses with it...if the leaker felt that everyone would benefit from releasing the RUU, it would have happened
there is nothing file wise that is a RUU and not a rom made from it that would benefit aosp anyway....all the bins/libs and associated files are the same
theres no *magic* in there....kernel source code is the most important thing in that area

Worse come to worse, do a Nandroid and flash a few ICS builds to try them out. If you don't like it restore back. I see some posts of people using Liquids ICS as a DD. Might be worth trying. I personally am waiting this weekend to see if anything else gets released just to get some kinks out due to the fact I use my phone for work and need the functionality of my phone. Liquids ICS is not based off of that leak from Teambamf and hopefully now that the leak has come out they may find it useful to perfect their Rom a bit more.
Again thanks to all the Devs for all the hard work they do!
Currently using Thundershed 1.6. Zoom Kern.
I use liquid ics as my dd and I have no issues yet.
