[Q] USB storage on Prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Has anyone managed to mount a USB stick in the USB port of their dock?
Every stick that works in my original Transformer, is not recognised by my Prime. It is updated to ICS and I didn't think to check it worked before updating.
Possibly a bug in ICS, or maybe a problem with the dock? What do you think?

Mine worked fine before ICS and is still working fine after ICS. This may not bode well for your USB port being functional.

After I updated to ICS and connected the dock, usb, sd card slot and the mousepad was dead, too. After it stayed connected for about 10-20minutes, it suddenly worked.
I guess when you connect the dock for the first time after ICS is installed, a silent update is running for the dock as well. A notice would have been nice though, I started panicking as well...

I just tried a USB stick via a USB adapter. It reads fine here

Thanks for all the replies, but false alarm folks!
Tried the old 'switch it off and on again' and the stick mounts properly. You'd think I would have tried that first wouldn't you? DOH

wait, so everytime i plug in my usb stick, i have to reboot the device?

Anybody else not able to mount a USB storage device in the dock unless they reboot with it plugged in?

I read somewhere that there is a way to mount USB storage without rebooting...
Go to settings > storage > and then look for your device and select mount.
I have found that only my larger USB sticks (32GB) tend to not automount when I insert them.

NO, you should not have to reboot when you want to use a USB stick.
However with any computer-like object, if something isn't working correctly the first thing you should try is a reboot. Sometimes processes get tied up and stop working and a reboot will generally fix this.
FYI, USB sticks and USB external hard drives (I have a 500GB Seagate) work just fine through the Transformer's keyboard dock.

[Q] Fascinate recognized as CD Drive not Mass Storage Drive ??

Samsung fascinate
rooted
windows 7 with Samsung 64 bit drivers installed
back to stock DL01 and then OTA DL09 about five times today.
Here is the problem, when i mount my phone, intermittantly Windows 7 doesnt give me the pop up window that lets me view my sd card files. It gives me a pop up window with 2 choices:
Option # 1. View your files - this really doesnt let me view anything except 4 files one of them being a " Bootloader file "
Option # 2. Install Bootstrap Loader exe.
I have had my phone since september and rooted, rom"ed OTA"ed all of it and today this started happening.
When i look in Drives and Printers my phone is listed as a CD Drive and not a Mass Storage Drive.
Just curious if any one else has had this issue and what might have caused it to start happening.
I installed Samsung Kies earlier this afternoon but uninstalled it since it was pretty much worthless to fascinate owners and the U.S. isnt supported.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced for any info.
have you tried re downloading the drivers from samsung.com? it worked for me.
This has been talked about in several places already. It is a common bug with DL09. The best solution is to flash one of adrynalyne's 1/18 test kernels found here. I hope this helps!
BTW: make sure it is one of the kernels with the cd fix
when im on 2.1 aosp, i have that same issue, to fix reboot with debugging enabled
Seems to be related to some new 'Media sync' option.
I did some playing around and the following seemed to let me 'mount'
the phones as before. ( But I dont like it. )
Hoping for some direction from Verizon tech on
a) what is media sync ?
b) how do I turn off permanently If I dont need or want to use it?
Unplug phone from usb cable.
Then on Phone... Menu...Settings..USB settings
Change to ' Ask on connection'.
then press home button.
Plug in USB cable.
When prompted...Press 'Mass storage'.
Now wait...wait..wait. Took about 30 to 45 seconds.
Annunciator bar should have usb symbol. Drag it open.
Press usb connected....Press Mount..
My laptop now recognized the SD card on E drive.
Copy files as usual.
When done...Open Anunciator bar and 'Turn Off' USB storage.
Media Sync is a mode that allows programs such as Windows Media Player and Rhapsody to access your SD card and copy over DRM protected music.

Thanks for this, it worked
not sure if it helps with the problems with 2.2 but whenever i had this issue on 2.1 this is what i did, turn off your phone with the usb cable in and turn it back on with the phone still plugged in. It always seemed to work for me
From your homescreen when you hit menu go to usb settings then make sure the little radio button for mass storage device is selected. That was my problem after the latest OTA from verizon. Also it takes like 15 seconds for it to all sync up.
i have searched these forums hi and low, googled, etc. still cant find an answer....
on djo5,dl09 i was able to plug my phone into the usb port in my car, then mount my sd card, and it would automatically connect and find my music and start playing it.
on either dl30, or eb01, i cannot get it to work.
it is very frustrating. everytime i try, (all different combinations debugging on/off mass storage/ ask on connect, etc.)
i get a "device connect failed" message.
does anyone else have this issue?
has anyone been able to get this to work?
Another fix when it shows up as a CD-ROM drive is to right click and eject. Seems to work every time for me.

Thanks your idea of reboot while still plugged in saved me. Tried every other idea with no cure.
Thanks for the post.
Just installed Superclean 2.6 and had issues. I tried ejecting the CD Rom device in Windows, but that didn't work. I changed the usb settings from Mass Storage to Ask On Connection and then tried it again. This time I received the Android guy asking to mount the drive. Yay! It worked! It does however show both a CD rom drive and the mass storage drive in Windows XP.
On another note, I found that if I plug in my phone without unlocking the password first it locks up the phone until I unplug the usb cable attached to the pc.
Make sure you are using a USB cable that has a good connection (like the original one). I bought some aftermarket cables, and while they are good enough for charging, I really think they fit too loose to keep a secure connection.

Thanks guys, this combination worked perfectly for me.
Just fyi, this is due to Verizon bloatware that has been inserted I to the kernel. Adrynalyne and company managed to flush it out of the Eclair kernel, but since we don't have kernel source code for the Froyo kernel yet, there's nothing that can be done at this time. When source is available, this will be fixed by our devs.

[Q]Computer not detecting phone MTP nor Mass Storage.

I have a really weird problem. My computer won't recognize my SGS2 is connected to the computer at all. Meaning no notification sound, no device change in device manager, nor any prompt to install a new driver. I've tried in both MTP and Mass Storage. What's even weirder is that it detects the phone in Odin mode and even installs the correct drivers. I've tried just about everything I could think of, such as the following:
-Cleaning the microUSB port with alcohol & new tooth brush
-lifting the microUSB connector slightly
-Using a toothpick to try to pick out any residue in mUSB port.
-Connecting while TWLaucher is set as default
-Using Wireless & Network setting > USB utilities.
-Taking out the sim card and external microSD card and booting & rebooting it.
-Restoring the stock Firmware
-Different wires, including an untouched mUSB wire that came with the phone.
-Different computer that doesn't have Kies or the said drivers installed. (Still didn't make a notification sound or bring up the "new device" prompt)
I just want to make sure I tried everything possible before sending it in for repairs.
EDIT: Oh forgot to mention that I had other problems before getting to this one. About a week ago Car mode would always activate by itself constantly. Even during use. Also the phone would refuse to stay turned off. After booting down, the phone would turn off. However, after some random amount of time, the phone would turn on by itself. During that time, connecting the USB wouldn't keep charging the phone. The phone would go between connected and disconnected randomly. Sometime off and on multiple times with in seconds. Other times would charge for hours and randomly stop charging. I've gotten the phone to charge whenever its connected now by cleaning the port, but the computer still can't recognize it as a device. Also the screen will randomly turn on, plugged in or not, and I have to manually turn it off again. However, if I turn it off right away it seems to lock up. So I have to unlock the phone the press the power button again to lock and turn off the screen. Don't know if this information helps.

Try another usb port, sometimes that helps or reinstall the usb drivers in Kies
Ignore, hadn't read all he'd tried.
Bump: Additional information.
Same problem here
I have exactly the same problem!!
My thought is that the USB connector get wet and stopped working properly. As fas as i know, USB connector is composed by 3 cables, one for charging, one for data transfer and another one to detect Car Dock.
It seems that Odin is using Car Dock cable (?¿?¿) instead of Data, so you can use Odin and not Data.
Also that would explain why car mode just kicks in by itself (short circuit between car cable and probably power cable).
I will also sent it to a SAT, since i tried everything via software....
I have the same problem. Try plugging into a mates laptop, see if it works on their one.
I have created a thread on this, check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642998
Really don't understand this!

SDCard won't mount as HD in Car Dock...

I use a car mount on my office desk to hold my phone. I would like to be able to mount the SDCard as HD when it is in this mount and usb connected to my PC, but it will not allow me to do it.
Is there a way to override this? I understand that this is written into the Android OS because they assume you will be using the Car Dock software and that needs access to the SDCard, thus no mounting allowed. In my case, I don't wish to use the Car Dock software at all and need the mounting.
Any ideas? I've researched this online and not seen any clear answers. I've tried apps that disable the Car Dock software but mounting is still not available.
I believe that this would require some re-wiring inside of the dock. I think the 2 data pins on the usb port are connected to each other. This tells the phone that it can charge at AC-outlet levels, but it does block any attempt to use the usb port for data purposes.

Huh, that would make sense.
Doesn't matter now anyway since I've downloaded AirDroid and can connect over WIFI instead
OK I *thought* I posted this early this AM but must've backed out of the app before sending reply lol.
1 - delete "DockMode.apk" from /system/app (assuming you don't want dock mode) ALSO, backup the app first just in case.
2-then in main settings/connect to PC/default connection - set to mount storage (assuming you want it to automatically do that when you plug it in usb/dock)
I *think* this will get you what you want...
Hope it works

This has no effect at all. Dock mode still launches. No idea how since .apk deleted. As the previous poster said I believe this may be a hardware setting where mounting is not possible.
The only way to stop the phone from going into Dock Mode is to go into go into Titanium Backup and freeze "Car Mode".
This still does not allow the phone to mount, but at least Car Mode will not launch.

USB connection doesn't work

Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB utilities > "Connect storage to PC" button > plug in USB cable
This used to work perfectly up until today, now it just doesn't work anymore and the "Connect USB cable to use mass storage" popup keeps showing even after I plug it in. I've tried on multiple computers and I tried restarting my phone, but nothing works.

Thats one wierd proccess for getting USB storage man. most would just plug it in and pull the notification bar down to click the mass storage mode icon thing.
but if your not getting a connection, USB port could be toast.
Simple search would've showed that.

Oh wow you're right, I just plugged in the charger and it doesn't charge. So phone is useless, throw it away?
It's strange that it worked fine up until today and then suddenly decided to break, even though the phone has just been sitting on my desk in my room. And it's only a few months old.

If you really have a fried USB port, send the phone back for a warranty replacement. If you don't have stock firmware on it, there are guides to return to stock - haven't specifically checked, but I believe it's possible to do this entirely without plugging in if you are already rooted.

I bought the phone on ebay though, would it still have warranty?
Is there a part I can buy to replace it myself? It's definitely a problem with just the USB port, because if I fiddle with the charger it starts charging if I hold it at a funny angle.
Some people have had success cleaning the usb port with alcohol. That might help but not if a wire or solder joint is broken. If you do try alcohol, don't use regular rubbing alcohol (70%), too much water (30%), get the better (90%) or even better (99%).
If you don't feel like fixing it yourself, you can settle for finding a battery charging dock and get an extra battery. Also, if you need to place files on your phone, use dropbox, Kies wirelessly, or take out your SD card and use an adapter.
I bought a new USB connector and it's working now.
im on stock 4.0.3 ics stock rooted and i can't find mass usb storage mode when i plug usb to phone to computer i just get options mtp which i do not use as it always says wpd error etc and camera. were is the mass usb storage option? ps if i click on "more" in wireless network settings phone freezes up and i have to take out battery.

In Android 4.0x systems (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above, Google introduced a new file transfer protocol called Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), which may be set by default. The problem with MTP is that, while Windows explorer can see it, there is no drive letter assigned, so programs like Pimlical can not see the phone's sdcard. The Android operating system still has the capability of USB Mass Storage protocol, which does assign drive letters, as has been the norm in all previous operating systems. It may be possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings. If it is not possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings, then it is possible to force USB Mass Storage.
This behavior is governed by the system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. This is a text file containing a single string. The settings are "mass_storage,adb" or "mtp, adb". Since this is a system file, it is necessary for the phone to be rooted, and then this file can be edited using a root file explorer. Change the text in the file to mass_storage,adb (without spaces), save the file, and reboot the phone.

Nexus 9 with no USB setup? Very confused.

So, I have received a hand-me-down Nexus 9, and I start in on my usual cleanup and setup routine, only to find something very weird- my computer utterly does not notice its existence when I plug in the USB, and the USB settings are missing from their usual spot in the Storage and USB section of settings.
I eventually found the control for USB type in the Developer settings (maybe it moves when you activate those?), but the computer still doesn't know anything's connected.
Things I have confirmed:
Tablet charges fine.
The cord works for file transfer with another device (a Kindle that happened to be around)
I can change to different USB connection types- none of them work.
The computer is COMPLETELY unaware of the tablet- no mysterious entries popping up to indicate missing drivers, nothing.
WTF? I can't do most of the other steps I usually do without at least a little bit of access so I can root the thing and put in a decent recovery. Has anyone else seen something like this? Was there a fix?

Try a different cable.
Boot into bootloader and see if computer sees device there
When you plug your tablet to computer a notification pops up on Nexus 9 (Charging only). Click on it and you will be able to select different connection mode.
If changing that notification mentioned in Post #3 doesn't work, updated the USB drivers in the computer Device Manager while the Nexus 9 is connected.
I had a similar issue with a Nexus 9 I bought on Swappa. I had to wiggle the usb cable, but in my situation the "data" portion of the usb port on the tablet was faulty/damaged (PTP/MTG/OTG failed). It was able to charge without issues, and by wiggling it windows would detect it but fail "usb device malfunctioned".. I ended up returning it to seller.
I've had this happen at times (only owner of my device). If you did what maelfilk suggested and no go, you either have a power-only cable (similar to what clockcycle posted) or you need to go through process of upgrading driver on PC; or, if that doesn't work, delete everything related to android USB drivers on PC. Then, let them (each device) repopulate.
