[Q] Zimage and Rooting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have been looking through all the forums for days now and cant find a answer...
I'm trying to root my galaxy s2 'WKI4' I have downloaded the insecure and orginal kernels. But when I upzip them instead of a .tar file there is only a zimage. Can someone please tell me how to change the zimage into the .tar file or where I can get the two .tars
Thanks

It's CWM Recovery package.

The zimage is the kernel.

Make your file extensions visible, or view properties to confirm you're not mistaking the tar for a zip. tars will share the same icon as any other archive file, zip, rar, etc...

Wow i just assumed it was another .zip because the same pic... I feel really stupid now lol
Well thanks for the quick reply guys

I made the same mistake once. It felt like an Abbott and Costello routine until I figured it out. Glad to help out.

Windows stupidly hides extensions by default, its both an attack vector (.exe.jpg's or w.e) and makes hard to work out what a file is at times.

[Q] Request for stock Galaxy player 4.0 ROM.

Hi, can someone who has the US version of Galaxy Player 4.0 (yp-g1cwy/xaa) please make a flashable rom backup of the firmware and upload it?
Thanks
I have access to a 4.0 player recently bought from amazon. How would I go about dumping the rom? Would this also dump the persons information with it or is the memory range limited to just the rom?

You will need a rooted device first, but that can be easily done if you just search around the forums.
Twobits, or anyone could you please make the firmware from the guide given?
The other day I let my friend use my player, and he was stupid and opened titanium backup and accidentally deleted a whole bunch of system apps. I had not backed then up yet, and so now my device is super buggy and many things don't work right.
Just use terminal emulator from the market and first type "su" (you need to root your device first), then copy paste those commands under system, kernel, and recovery to create three files on the root directory of your phone. Then can you upload them to a site (such as mediafire, megaupload, etc) and post or pm me the links?
Thanks. I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
Can anbody please help me?
I really need the firmware urgently.
Thanks.

for the system instead of stl10 its stl9 and for kernel its bml7 instead of 8.
l (minus L)
from choucas06:
But you only have to make a backup a of the Sytem and the Kernel (recovery is not needed).
To backup the system, the correct command for YP-G1 is :
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/stl9 of=/sdcard/factoryfs.rfs bs=4096
For the kernel, it is :
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/bml7 of=/sdcard/zImage bs=4096

When odin recognize this mode it's a form a download mode. At this point you have 2 choices.
1. send to samsung for a little fee
2. hope for someone to backup a rom
I would like to help you but I have a non-US player (maybe that depends of what you have)
I have backup files I did with terminal emuator, don't know what to do with them though, I read you need to have linux to make a backup rom, I only have windows.
Why would samsung charge, isnt it under warranty?

You can just upload the files, and I have Linux and will make then into a ROM for everyone who needs it.

From what I heard, you don't need recovery.bin, you just need the 2 other files die your ROM.

did anyone ever send you the rom? I am desperate and am willing to download a file that takes a day or two on my stupid internet!
Could someone at least post the pit file for 4.0 2.3.5?
Edit; ok, now I really need pit file, tried one from a guy at anythingbutipod, but guess what, now I get big red errors about "E:\"

If you have the errors about E:. It's good because I have already have it. To remove it you need to wipe your data and cache (factory reset) because you are already in recovery menu.

[Q] rooting the note

Planning on picking up a note next week, I've looked at the dev page for root instructions but I can't really make heads or tails of them and all of the videos I view seems to be the international version. Can anyone confirm of root or is is a work in progress and I should just wait.
It works via odin and is really easy

Just rooted mine using the steps from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
Coming from a Dell Streak this was a whole different process but it was really easy.
Now, seems the rooting/unrooting of the European version does not makes your rom count go up (please excuse my lack of proper terminology) therefore you can return your phone to stock (ex. for a warranty claim) without Samsung knowing you have mess with the rom. Is that the same for this version and if not is that in the works? How about unrooting the phone?
Thanks.
I have yet to hear one single actual case where Samsung denied a hardware claim because of the counter. People are going root counter crazy around here. C'MON ITS XDA! This is why we are all here, right??

You have to download the file. There are links to everything you need in Da_G's root threads in the dev section. Download, extract, then browse to the file via Odin, just like you tried above.
Edit: Actually with this one you don't even need to extract it. Its already a .tar file.

I didn't say anything about asking questions where you downloaded the kernels.
I said to read the directions provided in the thread where you got the kernels from.
Don't mean to offend, but If you can't follow the threads, then your not ready to root your phone yet,"you will more likely brick it". READ and then READ again..
Dont run before you can walk.
Also, MAKE SURE you are trying to use kernels (and/or firmwares when you move onto firmwares) meant for your phone. If you got these kernels from a thread in the I9100 forums, make SURE you have an I9100 by looking on the label under your device's battery.
I have seen a ton of people flash kernels and firmwares/ROMs intended for a different device, and the results have varied from the device not functioning quite right, to an outright brick that had to get sent back to Samsung.
The easiest way to root your s2 is zegrush exploit, works for me no problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
and you dont have to use odin so flash counter doesnt increase

I was confused too before rooting but you learn quick and understand after you do it. I dont know much myself but I dont think you need to download any kernels to root, at least I didnt. just use the link in my post above and it will be easy, yes it is scary the first time!!!

Pretty much every kernels here dont require you to unzip them, you flash them as they are. As everyone above says, read the instructions. I also know a lot of computers, but sadly pretty much no knowledge of that is useful for phones, unless you know programming.

What thread are you getting the file from, and reading? Cause it REALLY seems you are not following the instructions correctly. The zImage file IS the kernel, but it has to be in a .tar file to flash in Odin. So it sounds as if you've unzipped it twice instead of just once, maybe.
kernels
I was sent to this site from android pit,to get my kernels to root my samsung galaxy s2. i have followed android pit rooting video exactly its not hard but the kernels you get from this site are not the same as on the android pit video. And they tell you to get them from here. why

I just TOLD you what you were doing wrong. I'm starting to think you really have no business doing this yourself.
If you end up with a zImage file, you unzipped it one too many times. Put the file that CONTAINS the zImage file into Odin.

It does, actually. There's a section in post 1 as follows:
But where are the files going, you say?
.PIT -> PIT
APBOOT -> BOOTLOADER (or PDA if flashed alone)
CODE -> PDA
MODEM -> PHONE
CSC -> CSC

.PIT -> PIT
APBOOT -> BOOTLOADER (or PDA if flashed alone)
CODE -> PDA
MODEM -> PHONE

***If you have a 1 file .tar package, then flash it in PDA***

He still has to figure out how to parse the filename himself...
Which I personally thought was obvious. But some don't find it that obvious.
I look at it more like I put the spoon in the food for him, and now it's up to him to get it to his own mouth.
My hope is posts like mine (and Bruce MJ's) help guys like muzzyx with the critical thinking, and learn to read entire posts before just jumping into stuff they don't necessarily understand.

Yeap, seems that İ missed that part of the thread... İ have been trying to restore my phone the WHOLE DAY and have done allot of reading so my concentration was not 100% there when reading the read. İ nearly fried my brain trying to understand how Odin and flashing works. Finally İ managed to work it out and got my phone back up and running. İ seem to have lost my ROOT access though? Why has this happened?

Because you re-flashed a stock firmware during the course of your fix, if you followed that guide correctly. You'll have to re-root. Root does not persist firmware flashes, unless the firmware you're flashing is pre-rooted.
Flash a stock kernel = lose root. Flash a CFRoot kernel or root your phone again via another method. Or flash a custom rom/kernel.

[Q] From odin format to flashable zip?

Hello everyone!
Compliments for the wonderful forum!!
Allright, this is my first post here on xda, but it has been a while since when i started following this community and i've always found answers to all of my questions, but not this time, i've been googling for 1 hour but yet no answer i searched on the forum but yet no answere, so i decided to post it myself, hoping that it wont bother anyone and that it's in the right section.
So, my question: Is it possible to turn a rom from Odin format (.tar/.tar.md5 etc) into a flashable zip? If yes, how?
My intention was to customize a stock rom for the gt-s7500, with dsixda's kitchen, that apparently supports only flashable zips.
Thanks a lot in advance
MozeMpk
Ps. i'm sorry if im not in the right section it just seemed logic to me to post in here
found something...
