How often do you guys make a backup up?
I used to do it very rarely. Then it became every Sunday.
Now I'm doing it everytime I install a new app, or make a mod to the phone... I do one almost daily, and sometimes up to 5 times a day!
And I don't even change ROMs after that!
Is that bad? How often should I do it?
How often do you guys go it?

I usually only make one when changing/updating ROMs. Then I only keep it till the next ROM change or a completely different ROM, for example I keep the original Sense nandroid and I have the last ILWT CM7 nandroid I made when switching to ICS, but, usually delete between ROM updates.

i do Nandroid backup once or twice every week...
- backup before update ROM or change to other ROM
- backup before i update kernel
- backup after i update alot of apps on that day
I do it only before changing/upgrading roms... in the first case i keep it for two/three of them in the eventuality to go back for a more stable one... only the last good one in case of upgrade.
I backup every saturday and keep backups of all my fave roms set up and ready to go.

It's not harmful taking nandroid backups

Indeed! Funniest "misunderstanding" since the "How to take a dump" thread someone made asking how to take a... screenshot!
That made my day, so thanks!
Jokes aside, I find Titanium sufficient to backup apps and data and I only do nandroid backups when I edit system files. That way, if something goes wrong, I go to recovery -> Advanced Restore -> /system so my phone comes back to normal and my data are intact. So 5 nandroids a day will do no harm but no good either, imho.

If you do it that often there's a good chance that one day you include the problem that screws up your install in your Nandroid, making it worthless to go back to. If you're flashing/modding a lot i'd suggest having one known stable backup which you keep as a fall-back, and then another that you replace as often as you like.

Yeah, its like 3Gb. It'll probably take forever, but I've never backed it up.

It takes a while due to it being a 1.2GB partition with around 800MB of data. It's is larger than most phones entire nandroid. I suggest you back it up once with a new full update like 198_7 and don't worry about it afterwards.
I dont back it up or restore it, tremendously saves on time, if you dont have a dock/webtop over hdmi set up no real need.
Hmmm... at one point in time Toast and Flipz had overclocked the recovery for the Hero - wonder if we could do it with this too
That would be pretty sweet. I have made a couple backup's as of recent so I could play with the new kernels. So since I have one made I will skip it in the future.

Hi All,
I've been flashing my Optimus 2x with different roms from miui to cyanogenmod 7 to 9. I've been wondering because earlier some of my apps were perfectly functioning (e.g. market, temple run, and titanium backup) until I attempted to flash an update zip of titanium backup and Go sms (because I was kinda lazy doing the manual install). Now these apps are keeping force closing on my SelfKang 3 ICS.
Can anyone enlighten me about these?

Twice? but I did like other day 5x a day. Flashaholic
Stay calm. That's rule #1...
Delete the app data, then they should stop FC...
And, there is no particular risk, when flashing. Just be carefull, watch your device closely, and then everything SHOULD go to plan
Always, always, always do a nandroid backup before installing a zip.

I suppose that the internal emmc id designed to bear even 1.000 reflashing cycles or something like that. You can't take it for granted that you haven't damaged anything by reflashing twice only.
I've read something about damages by flashing too much, and mostly everything can withstand 100k delete/write sessions. You should be fine unless you flashed 100k times....

Reading through the ROM descriptions as well as through the forums it seems to me that Elegancia is generally concerned with optimal performance and battery life and Viper is mostly about customization and tweaks. Would experienced users say this is somewhat accurate? I'm asking because I just completed my first root and custom ROM install for my One X+ the other day and I chose elegancia because one of the main reasons I took the plunge into this daunting noob territory was that i wanted to improve what seemed the only real drawback to a great phone, namely the battery life, and this was highlighted in the elegancia description. And improve the battery life it did-- I now can get a FULL DAY (~13-14 hours) out of a charge, not having to resort to powersaver or be judicious with what I do with my phone. It's amazing how liberating this feels.
Anyway, I've been reading up on the Viper ROM and am loving all the personalization options it describes, namely the keyboard and theme options...but it doesn't say anything about the battery life in the description. What are people's experiences with battery life with this ROM? I am not prepared to give up the battery life I'm attaining with elegancia, but if if Viper could give me a couple extra hours than I had on the stock ROM, while perhaps not attaining elegancia levels, I still might be attempted to cross over.
When I get settled into a setup I will be making some donations.
Also, what's the best method for backing up apps and then reinstalling them after you flash a new ROM?
Take a backup in recovery and for Apps I use Titanium Backup.
I just moved from ARHD to Viper to test it, so that's what I did... If I don't feel comfortable with Viper I can put recovery and boot.img back and then restore my nandroid backup to have my phone back to where I left
Or install ARHD again and restore apps and data with Titanium. Never restore system apps and setting when moving between ROMs!

What do you mean? Like HTC Sense apps? Can I back my apps up in elegancia and get at them in Viper? Or do I have to redownload everything once I've installed a new ROM? I'm in the process of backing up all my apps and data with titanium...gonna heed your suggestion and try and save my setup in elegancia and try out Viper for a bit.
Where does titanium store the backup file(s)?
Do a backup and flash viper you can just use the same stock kernel I beleive as long as they havnt changed anything and try it out and if you font like it just restore your backup and your right where you left off

You should not restore the things under systems apps, but you can easily restore user apps (and data). Maybe they have changed something in system so it's better not to restore this... What do you mean with "HTC Sense apps"? In Viper they are included as well, so no need to restore them.
You don't have to redownload anything.
Titanium gives you the option to "Restore missing apps and data", you should not overwrite existing apps with your backup. If needed you can choose to restore only the app data so you can get back settings you did in apps (like bluetooth devices and stuff like that).
Titanium stores its backup in sdcard/titanium
Good luck!

Yes I discovered that...great app!
I mucked around a little bit and decided on DeSensed Elegancia with the Apex Launcher. I like the smoothness and some of the widgets in Sense but I know it's a big memory/battery drain and I love the customizability of the other launchers (themes/icons, number of apps per page etc.). Loving it so far and am thinking of trying the adw launcher on top of Apex for a bit.
Am pretty comfortable with backing things up and restoring now so it feels like I have a lot more freedom to explore and try things out.

True, but I would also like to ask a few questions to make my flashing as efficient as possible. It can often take a couple days to really figure out if something is for you or not..the more info I can collect from other sources makes it easier for me to know where to start.
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions/info everyone.

I really love Sense things, especially the weather stuff! :good: I use ADW, and combined with Viper you can have endless tweaks and customizations!
With my use of phone the battery lasts for at least 2 or 3 days, sometimes up to 5 days with original ROM. So I don't bother about getting one or two hours more or less with De-Sensed ROMs... If you really want to have pure Android ROM try AOSP or Cyanogen...

i think my back up pro worked without root. aptoide back up apps also works without root but its a cloud backup so yull have to download them back later opn which is no hassle because the download speeds are pretty high. i find it easier to make a large flashable zip of all my apps using app2zip but that requires root i think.
The past few days my phone has been rebooting constantly. Not a full reboot but like a hot-boot. It happens every single time I uninstall an app and more often than not when I install one. I have tried the phone in safe mode, as well as restoring back to mdk and the issue persists.
I am currently on HD15. No matter what I have done it still does this. I have also removed my sd card to see if that was it, and same thing happens. The battery isn't swollen and I really hope it isnt just hardware because I'd have to lose my mdk phone and that would suck. Any help or ideas is very appreciated. It's driving me insane.
Edit: The phone has also done it just when idling.

This has been mentioned a lot in the Hyperdrive thread. Apparently it's a pretty common problem with MDK phones. I think I read it has something to do with the kernel. You might want to check there.

I had it happen on my MDK S4 when using HD15, but not so often as it seems to happen for you.

Which kernel? I've tried 3 different ones.
I also odin'd back to stock mdk and still freaking have the same issues. Though I did the no-wipe tar. I wonder if a completely clean slate would fix it. I may try tomorrow after backing everything up completely and making another nand-backup. I have no idea what else to do other than replace the battery and see if thats the issue, or replacement phone and lose my mdk one.

Well that's good news! Hopefully that issue is no more. I've used this same Odin file a few times and it's rescued me every time. I usually always go with a full wipe.
Also I flash KToonsez Kernel with every ROM I flash, Touchwiz or Aosp and it's treated me good each time.
only mentioning that since it was said that maybe this was kernel related somehow although I'm not sure why after you flashed the no wipe Odin file it still happened. Sounds like your phone just needed a good cleaning. I'd start fresh with whatever ROM you choose to flash.

Hmm, yeah a clean flash would probably be best. But I will go ahead and restore user apps (and things like messages and accounts on my phone), I am fairly certain it had nothing to do with those.
Will report back with how that goes. But for now, a backup of the fresh MDK install, thanks for the help!
Right so I stayed on MDK for now, and restored pretty much everything. I think what may have broken things is trying to restore media storage (playlists) in titanium backup. after the clean mdk image I made a twrp backup and decided to only try the setting options that titanium backup does. Well one (or more I suppose) of those broke everything and the rebooting came back. I restored from the backup again and restored those settings one at a time, but left out some of the green colored backups in tibu, and all is well. I will however wait until HD16 before messing with another rom.

At least you know where the problem came from. I actually don't even bother saving and restoring with TiBu anymore because of issues that can sometimes pop up afterwards... I know for some though they really need to have their apps and data restored so just one of those things I guess
