[Q] - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Well, I've been trying to do something with my pointless life, so I thought that building a custom rom could be a tad fun.
I've done a bit of reading, and apparently, there's something of an android kitchen for editing stock/custom roms, on linux-based OS's.
Would that be applicable to the sga builds, anyway?(first query)
Anyway, how did most of you come up with one, anyway? *Smiley face*
And about that UOT kitchen(second query), how do you apply one of those flashable zips, inside a rom?
[If you consider this thread as pointless, don't reply, or flame me, or call me a noob,n00b, or any other pointless thing that can't possibly help with my query]

What is the best ROM and why?

Hello everyone,
most recently I have updated my Hero to the new ROM supplied by the fellows at HTC (the 2.73... I think). Then I remembered that on my HTC S710 I used to have a rom that came from here. So, I took a look. I have a couple of questions. Oh, let me also tell you that I have rooted my phone (I think, with Instant Root).
So these are my questions:
What do you think is the best rom available?
And why? What are its advantages to a 'normal' HTC Rom?
As a beginner, I can look over this forum for hours (I did!) but still miss out on this answer!
there is no answer to this question, that's why.
It's like asking which is better, up or down?
Everyone will prefer a different ROM for different reasons. get your device flashed to the new recovery image and then you can try all the ROMS and decide for yourself what the 'best' one is.
Personally i stick with the generic ROMs and haven't used the modaco custom ROMs yet as i am happy with the way the device works and not in need of all the hacks that other people want as i rarely use them.
you may be different.
try them all and decide for yourself.
Hm. Yes, I like the way you are thinking - and heck, it is the second time you've given me a great reply! I'll go out and tinker with the world, and more specific: with ROMs! Although I have no idea what flashing my device to a new recovery image means, I do remember having to do something similar with my S710. And I am sure I will find an explanation here! Who knows, pherhaps in a short while, I will answer my own questions!
There aren't many customised ROMs for the Hero yet, partly because the source code isn't available yet from HTC, so the ones that do exist are based on versions of the HTC ROMs.
Use Flashrec and install the awesome modified cyanogen recovery image, then you can flash one of the ROMs. I chose the stock UK ROM pre-rooted, from MoDaCo's site (not the MoDaCo customised ROM though).
It's convenient because it is pretty much the stock experience, except it's pre-rooted which makes some other things possible.

Hey, I upgraded from a S710 to a Hero as well. I'm very happy with having done that as the Hero is such a better phone!
Anyway. Flashing a new recovery image is one one of these 'tinkering' things you/we have to get used to when playing with ROMs. Essentially the recovery image is a very basic control on the phone that you can reboot into, from where you can update the ROM or do total system backups. You can read about how to do this in MoDaCo's custom ROM thread in the android development section. Flashing a new recovery image and new ROM isn't too hard really; took me at most a couple of hours.

stock or custom rom?

Hi Guys,
I would like to ask you a question.
I just got the lastest updated from viewsonic for my gtbab. This upgrade includes some improvements such as : support for mouse and keyboard usb, french and spanish language , full flash support...
So at this point.. I am wondering...is still a good idea to install a custom rom?
If so, could you please point out what real advantages I can get once installed a custom rom?
It's important for me if it is worth to do it. So I need your real expertise in the subject.
Thanks
ralex76,
It really just depends on what meets your needs.
The current stock ROM -- 1.2.4349 -- is way improved from the old software we got
back last November. But it still does not have Market and some of the little fixes
the devs have come up with here.
I would note that roebeet already has posted that he will not be too long in posting
a new version of his TwoTapsX alternate ROM based on the new update. I am sure
he will build Market and fixes into it just like he has all his ROMs in the past (though
I can't speak for him). So that will make it a pretty close alternative to stock with
everything in it.
Then, there's Vegan, Gingerbread, Calkulin and a whole host of other ROMs with a
wide variety of looks and features.
The choice is yours based on (1) what you like and want, and (2) how much risk
to you want to take in learning to flash ROMs (and if needed troubleshoot, etc.)
I tell all new folks to go slow, read hugely here, notice what mistakes everyone
else is making so you don't make them yourself -- and have fun!!!
Rev
I think you just need to search around and look at the benefits of each ROM and compare it to your tablet. We don't know how and for what you are using your tab, so it is up to you if a ROM is more suitable for your situaion.
I think if you are fine with the stock ROM and don't see anything that you would want differently, don't bother flashing something else.
Also, make sure to look at Roebeets post regarding the newest OTA update!

Looking for Direction

So... Big Red sent me an email today saying that Im eligible for a new phone. While I'd love a thunderbolt (save the not-so-great screen resolution), my budget is more along the lines of the Fascinate. My biggest reason for choosing this phone, other than having specs that are quite in line with the D2 and DX, is that I can FINALLY get away from having a locked bootloader. Sadly, while the D2 is a great phone, it's all but dead as the independent development community can't support the phone to the full extent.
Anyways, having done my research, I've landed here =)
I have about a year under my belt with applying custom ROMs, unbricking my phone via .sbf files using Motorola's RSDlite program, overclocking, and even designing and applying my own splash screens. I know, obviously, that the Fasciante is going to be an entirely different animal than what Im used to.
Basically Im wondering if some of you guys with experience could point me in the right direction as far as rooting methods, installing a custom recovery (is there more than one? Or rather, a preferred one?), and which kernel's and ROMs would you guys recommend?
All of your input is much appreciated, as I look forward to becoming a part of your community in the very near future =) Many thanks in advance!
**edit: pardon my idiocy, I just realized I posted this in the wrong section. my apologies.

Community ROM and Evil Fascination ROM seem to be the most stable/popular/best ROMs out there at the moment and they both come with kernels installed so you don't need to worry about that. However, I suggest you do some reading to form your own opinion and gain some knowledge about these ROMs/kernels before you go ahead and flash them. Everything you need is in the threads for these ROMs:

As for your question about custom recoveries (ClockworkMods or CWM), there is a sort of transition period going on right now between two different types of recoveries. For a long while everyone was using something called amend scripting for their ROMs, Kernels and MODs. This meant that these could only be flashed through CWM 2.5.x (also called red recovery). Now since there is a newer version of CWM (New red recovery or 3.x) that only uses edify scripting, developers are starting to make the transition from amend to edify so their products can be compatible with the new CWM. Therefore, most of the newer stuff will most likely be edify (3.x) while the older stuff will be amend (2.5.x). I would suggest going with the newer CWM but like I said before, you should probably do some reading and form your own opinion.

And finally.........
Welcome to the Fascinate Community!!! If you need any help just ask (in the correct forum of course) and someone will definitely help you out.
Thanks a ton, this helped me a lot!
I bought my Fascinate today, and it's already rooted, running Evil Fascination 3.5.1 =) I took your recommendation of going to 3.x recovery as well, as that's the direction everyone seems to be going after doing some more reading/research.
That being said, I truly can't believe the difference in responsiveness compared to my D2! Sure the D2 was crisp and fast, but its a night and day difference when you're able to run a custom kernel with a fully customized/optimized ROM!

[Q] What do you need to know for basic development?

Assume you're telling a middle-aged woman that's trying to take her youth back and has Android but really doesn't know anything about it.
I'm not, but that wouldn't be far off.
I have no idea what I should be telling you I need to know, I just want to know what I need to know if I want to know how to say... make a ROM for a phone.
If you can read that last sentence I'll ensure a bj from Carmen Electra. Try to figure out what I mean, because even I don't really know...
you can either cook a rom from an existing rom (easier) or you can start from scratch (harder).
to cook a rom from an existing rom, take a look at the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198035
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192493
you can also theme your cooked rom using the UOT Kitchen
if you want to start coding a rom from scratch, i believe you need to know java (it might be another programming language such as c++; i can't say for sure since i am not a developer )
Alright, thanks!

[Discussion] Rooting (insecure kernel) and building JB ROM for Player 3.6

Basically what I'm trying to do is make an insecure/rooted kernel and a custom ICS ROM for the Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6. I don't have enough knowledge and experience to do this completely on my own, so if anyone's willing to help that would be great.
For rooting I know that because it's 2.3.6 there's no universal way to root. I've heard that the only way to root 2.3.6 is by flashing an insecure, or rooted kernel, while I'm savvy enough to flash the kernel and/or provide the files, I have no idea how to build one.
For a custom ICS ROM it's the same, I'm savvy enough to flash a ROM and provide files, but not even close to knowing how to build one. I'd like the ROM based off of CM10, if possible.
I'm willing to test out anything remotely stable that doesn't have a large chance of bricking my device. I know the amount of people who are interested in this is small, but we will all be very grateful.
I thought most custom roms automatically allowed the user root access. After all, managing users and permissions is a function of the kernel, which gets replaced when you flash a new rom, doesn't it?
Of course, there is a very good chance I'm mistaken or just wrong. Either way, this is a great chance to learn the how's and why's of droid development.

Sorry if it didn't seem clear, but in the end I'm wanting to create a custom ICS ROM, but right now I'm wanting to at least root.
