ASUS (Gary Key) UNKNOWN Serial Fix - Post Results - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Gary Key of ASUS who has been very active trying to help Prime owners with issues posted a suggested fix that seems to have helped other owners who have tablets with Unknown serial numbers and are unable to update to ICS.
Here is the suggestion:
1. As for the Serial Number Unknown problem, please try doing a factory reset. If it does not work the first time, after the reboot, please try it again and once at the desktop, wait about 10~15 minutes for the system to sync with the server. So far this has worked for users I am directly assisting at the moment on another forum but it has not worked on two particular units that were returned yesterday.
Might be an idea for users with this issue to give feedback in a separate thread here.
My Result: I've tried it twice, unit still reports an unknown serial number.
To be clear the prime has never been rooted or attempted to be rooted and was factory plastic sealed when I got it.
I have not been able to download any OTA updates, but was able to manually update to Honeycomb .33 from Asus support site.

That's not a fix. It's nothing.
I really want to see a link to this forum where he helped the people.

It's not nothing, it is his suggested fix.
He is trying to help and works for Asus.
Lets try and keep this thread on topic and post just results.
Maybe Gary Key can post updated suggestions,
or more detailed info / steps , if needed ...

Just tried it twice. Did nothing except delete all my apps, settings, music, and books. Serial number still unknown, still can't get ICS. I wish Asus would just post the friggin update on their site so I can manually update for now until they get this sorted out.

i def agree with the ICS update on the site, but whatever.
I pm'd gary with my serial #, hopefully he can help.

No Luck
Tried it twice - still no luck. I've seen ppl in this forum reporting that factory reset worked for them, that how i got the idea before even finding this post. Good Luck to others.

Didn't work
I tried it twice as well and waited for it to sync. No luck. Serial number still unknown. I hope Asus fixes it soon. If not I might be returning mine and looking at other alternatives.

Yes, get it on site asap--before a host of people return their ATPs.

Did this multiple times a day, did this multiple times throughout several days, still "Serial Number Unknown" and no OTA Updates.
Also, purchased it from Best Buy.com, got it the day after ICS was released, that was the first thing I tried to do, turn it on and update to ICS. Nothing! Wasn't rooted, since you cannot root a "Serial Number Unknown" tablet as much as Gary or Asus may want to hint that it is based on previous comments.
More of a suggestion, and far from a fix. The OP should update the title with a questions mark so it is obvious this is a suggestion and NOT a fix!

No go here. I still have four days on my return policy with bb.

I started an official thread on this subject. We are still trying to replicate it and hopefully I will have an answer from R&D shortly.

I asked this in another thread where you mentioned problems but never replied. Please PM your serial number and contact information and we will assist you. As for the rooting, yes it can occur with a Serial Number Unknown unit as evidenced by two returned samples and replication testing.

When's the manual download from the Asus site coming? Unless it has already?
I'm very interested in the Transformer Prime but am not interested in Honeycomb, it has to run ICS!

I might have been interested but, as with the G73, Asus once again seem to have pushed something out that's defective, without proper testing.
It doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Upset and have returned device
On January 8th I spent 3 hours with Asus on the phone. I talked to a few different people. was put on hold various times. Here are the replies I got from each before I was put on hold for a long time, and the what I said after it.
1)
ASUS: It's not suppose to have a serial number on the device
ME: I have 3 other android devices, all show the serial #, also my nieghbors TP shows a serial number, so is his device defective?
2)
ASUS: Wipe the data, and you should be able to update after that.
ME: Please wait on the line while I do this...(10 min later) No it's still not getting the update
3)
ASUS: Let me walk you thru how to install the update manually
ME: I just spent 500+ on a device, unless doing the update manually is going to fix the issue of it now updating automatically, I'm not going to start putting work-a-rounds into my routine for this device.
4)
ASUS: There are no updates currently avialble for that device.
ME: I got angry here. I'm on 2.7, there was a release 2.9, and current is 3.3. Do I need to send you the link to your own product support site? Please Connect me to a supervisor or someone who can fix this issue.
5)
ASUS: You've reached the desk of supervisor _________ I'm currently not able to take your call Please leave a name and # and I'll get back to you.
ME: WTF Is this a joke? I've been on the phone for 3 hours dealing with the issue and you end up sending me to a voicemail to end my call. I'm done with you guys and am reporting you to the BBB and will deal directly with my distributor to get a new device.
Thanks for being no help.
On the 13th of January I returned the device.

Just got my brand new Prime today in US, but it says

"There is no update available for your device currently"
Just got my prime this afternoon. I am actually quite excited. I purchased it 1/6 from Best Buy online. I appear to have a proper Serial Number, but I am stuck on Honeycomb 3.2.1. I let it charge up, I have registered the device, but it hasn't installed 1 single update, not one.
I have not synced with Google or anything else. I just set up my Date and Time, and that was it.
I am simply going to SETTINGS, ABOUT TABLET, SYSTEM FIRMWARE UPDATE, but it says "There is no update available for your device currently."
What am I doing wrong? I am completely new to Android, but updating is pretty obvious, it just will not find an update.
Sorry if this is a Noob Question, but I hope this is not some borked tablet.
Almost positive you have to sign into a Google account to get the update.

Ok, I sync'd with Google, but it still says there are no updates available.
Again, I am so sorry for noob questions. But do I need to reboot now or something?
Thanks for any help! Awesome!
Well it certainly couldn't hurt to try a reboot if you haven't already
Just did a basic Shut Down, started it up, still No Firmware Updates AT ALL! I mean, nothing. It says there are no updates.
I am starting to wonder if ICS was taken down or something, but that wouldn't explain why NO UPDATES are available. I am so confused and a bit disappointed.
Can you check if in About Tablet / Status if you have the "unknown serial number" showing?
It is a known error and so far people have been exchanging their device because of that ...
Yeah, ICS just updated for me so it's still up.
Well, found out my problem. I DO NOT HAVE A SERIAL NUMBER.
I wasn't going into the STATUS section at all, found out I have "Serial Number Unknown"
I am very disappointed and basically ticked right now. I received this 4 hours ago, never rooted or anything, and it has "Unknown Serial" right out of the box.
Ridiculous.
Back to the distributor it goes...
It does suck - there are a bunch of us in that boat. Mine is going back tomorrow...
Is there like some official thread where all of us "Serial Number Unknown" users can vent and lean on each other? Lol
Seriously, all of the issues I had seen with "Serial Number Unknown" seemed to be from people who had rooted their device. All I did was open my Prime and charge it.
I cannot believe this!

[Q] "Check Update" Doesn't Find ICS Update?

For some reason, my TFP canot find the update; it keeps telling me that "There is no update available for your device currently."
Any ideas?
Do you have a serial number on your unit?
I couldn't get updates and I think it was b/c I didn't have a s/n showing in my unit. I returned it and bought a new one. All is good now.

My daughter is having the same issue. Her firmware is only at .27 and when she checks for updates in settings, there is nothing. She also has not gotten the ICS upgrade. Should she wait or manually download the firmware update?
This is our first exposure to Android, so any advice would be appreciated.
Since there seems to be a fairly high chance that the update introduces some stability issues, take the time to get used to android and don't worry too much about the update - it's fairly minor improvements. Anything you install should be kept during the update.
You should check that you have a serial number though (settings, about - at the bottom of the list)
Well, I can ask about her serial number, but my serial number is not listed and my Prime firmware and OS was upgraded without issue. It's not a big deal for her to wait, but I am wondering what is the catalyst that triggers the automatic upgrades? Is it done over a certain amount of time? (She got hers a week after I got mine.)
Does anyone know?

Go into the SETTINGS in your PRIME then click on STATUS. If it says "Serial Number Unknown" then your sister will not be able to update to any of the firmwares, including ICS Android 4.0 or any updates Asus released before ICS.
I would guess yours actually shows a Serial Number if you are getting updates. Otherwise, there would be no way to get OTA updates.
Also, if your sister updates manually, she will always have to update manually. And that is a pain. Asus doesn't put up the actual firmware files for many days after they are sent OTA. For example, you still cannot download ICS Android 4.-0 from Asus' website, although it was release a few days ago.
3rdamention,
I did not know to look under status...mine is fine, but I will have her check hers. So, if the SN is missing, what is the resolve? I got hers at Office Depot which has been a nightmare of incorrect charges.I hope I won't have to deal with them again.
So far, no fix at all. Mine is going back to Best Buy!
If you have this problem, you cannot run certain applications, one I believe is Google Video. You cannot do OTA Firmware Updates, and you cannot root the tablet if you ever wanted to.
There is no fix right now, and Asus hasn't been any help whatsoever.
Here is a nearly 20 page thread about it if you need some friends or shoulders to cry on if you find your sister's has this issue. Plus this thread may be a decent read to acclimate you to this bug.

I'm having a similar issue... My TPrime has a serial number in the status, and on the 9th I got a notification that there was a firmware update available, so I hit update, TPrime rebooted, but the install messed up and just had an android guy with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. Once it rebooted, it reverted back to Honeycomb, and now I can't find the update again. I've even gone so far to wipe my TPrime, which took it back to .27, and had to manually update to .33, since it wouldn't even find that update...
I called Asus about it, and they said that the update had been recalled, and I should get it whenever they re-release it.
Anyone else have anything like this?

I tried that solution, and the one linked from that thread too. Those basically tell you to re-install the .33 firmware, then update to ICS (without specifying how, but I'm assuming it would just show up for them), and are aimed mainly for people who were rooted and had deleted bloatware. I wasn't rooted or hadn't deleted anything, and still can't find the update again.
I'm one of the no serial number people and cannot get updates. I noticed i wasn't getting updates right after Christmas and called Asus as soon as .33 came out, and they gave me the same bullcrap about it having been recalled even though everyone else was getting it. I think that's just their standard response to shut you up and get you off the phone.

So you have been on Stock Firmware now since you owned it in December? Sorry brother, that really stinks. At least for me it has only been this week.
That is one of my biggest complaints. You see people saying they haven't' been able to update since before Christmas. Now here we are on January 12th, Asus hasn't helped anyone, they tell them there have been no firmware updates. I seriously think they are buying time. Either they are close to a "Serial Problem Unknown" fix, or they want you to hold it past the return date so you have to send it to Asus, they keep your money, and they can just ship you a replacement.
There is a 20 page thread of people all considering taking their Primes back because of "Serial Number Unknown", but nobody from Asus is trying to help, PMing them, or anything.

Now that I think about it, I'm not too sure about that either... I was assuming it did since after I wiped all data, I had the .33 firmware on my microsd card, the tablet recognized it saying there was an update available, and reinstalled that firmware. But either way, the check update keeps telling me there is no update available when I'm with .33.

The funny thing about my prime is that was originally on 8.8.3.23. I haven't seen anyone else with that firmware revision, the lowest i've seen anyone else at is .27. I have manually updated to .29 with an sd card, but have held off on .33 because of the troubles others have had.
You're right, I haven't seen anything about ASUS working to solve this problem, and more and more people are cropping up with this issue. Where is Gary King from Asus on this one? He seems to be PM'ing people on the site about different issues to get resolved, but nobody with this issue has been contacted by him. I don't think it's high on their priority list, which sucks because none of us can get ICS. They obviously monitor these boards, yet we continue to be ignored.
OP: this happened to me last night.
But about half and hour later it started downloading the new update and then was ready to install. :/
Havnt had any issues since.
Dont have my prime with me atm, so i cant list serial, fw version etc.

I got this all the time when I first tried to unlock, until I remembered that I had made one small change to a system file. After I reverted that, it went through with now problems.
I think I actually ended up just downloading an ASUS firmware from their site and doing the sdcard method to put on a fresh stock firmware.
I hope that this helps you in some way.

They don't happen to have the serial number unknown issue do they?
I heard from an Asus tech weeks ago that the unlock servers were down. Not sure if they're still down though, mine still isn't unlocking.
Neither had the unknown serial issue. So anticlimactic, finally decided to void the warranty and the damned unlock app doesn't work.
Spoke with asus support techs on this issue they suggested firmware upgrade and retry.. no dice. The curious thing is they kept telling me my serial number was invalid even though I read it to them directly off the pads tag.. mine is a C3OKC series and registered fine on their website. I think based on my experience that asus has a serial number database issue that prevents unlocking of certain numbers and they ain't fessing up! Other posts in different threads seem to bear this out. hopefully, someone will release an alternative unlocker soon!

If they suspect your serial number is invalid, you wouldn't be able to update to v.28, correct? The OTA seems to work correctly for me, but I still can't unlock (using rootkeeper to back up root).

Hi all, I decided to finally take the dive a couple days ago to unlock my beloved prime and try out androwook and other custom roms that supposedly put stock to shame. However, I was unfortunately confronted by a crude and nasty message along the lines of:
Code:
An unknown error occurs, which may be a network connection issue.
Please wait and try again later
As usual, I unrooted, rebooted, and tried again. No luck.
I disabled and uninstalled ATP Tweak (sio scheduler/systune), replaced my modified dock keyboard files (browser mod, switched alt/search buttons), and tried again. No luck.
Factory reset from the settings menu. No luck.
Placed the .28 US update on my SD card, rebooted, and re-flashed the update. No luck.
Where does that leave me now? Locked and feeling imprisoned. I'm wondering if it is worth it to downgrade and try unlocking. So far, I have only seen one person have any success with this. Due to the potential brick risk, I want to stay away from this unless I know it will work. I also know that Asus asked for the MAC address of a prime owner with this issue, but that didn't go anywhere.
This seems like it may be an issue that is experienced by anyone that RMA'ed their tablet for whatever reason. I, personally, sent mine in for a green camera issue and mura, but do not think that they changed my motherboard.
I am also curious to see how many other people are having this issue. If it is sizable, I am willing to start a petition to Asus for them to support their unlock tool and fix this stupid error without an RMA. To that effect, please answer the poll above to let me gather some data on the unlock tool.
Thanks to everyone for your help and support that makes xda such an amazing community!
PS I don't want to see any "Asus sucks" posts. There are tons of other threads for that so please spare us
Additional info:
Have tried this on several different network connections.
Have not yet contacted Asus to see if they have my prime listed as "unlocked" already, but will do so sometime this week.
Logcat of running unlock tool results in this:
Code:
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === StatusCode: SC_UNAUTHORIZED!
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === OTA BEGIN
E/KeyBoxService(10158): === Connection to http://wvdrm.asus.com refused
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === Retry after 600 seconds.
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === OTA END
July 13th Update:
I have contacted Asus with this information. I learned something interesting. Asus has my tablet (s/n) listed as LOCKED. They also did not replace my mainboard when I RMA'ed the tablet. I also have not had the unknown serial number issue. Considering those were the 3 criteria a few of us had considered to be the reasons for not being able to unlock, I am now baffled.
I am going to continue communicating with Asus and hopefully push the matter a little bit more so that something happens. As I was told, "HQ is probably aware and working towards a fix". Let's hope that happens sooner rather than later.
September 5th update:
Seems that Asus HQ figured out a fix, but it requires an RMA. We'll find out soon if it actually works...
September 29th update:
Some of the members in this thread have sent their primes in for an RMA to fix the issue. The first prime back STILL has the problem. Asus HQ is looking into the matter...again...
Asus wants me to resend my tablet back to RMA to see if they can fix the problem. I'll see what they have to say, don't really want to RMA back. It's a software issue it seems to me, changing any hardware will just make it worse.
edit: Email was no help. Dumb. Stuck again! Yay

I found a tool for downgrading that worked pretty well, and when combined with Sparkys tool that will root you so easily on .28, the process of downgrading might be worth a try once you've done everything else.
I'm anxious to hear if anyone who's never rooted and has a serial number has ever had this problem.
I thought my tablet hadn't been unlocked correctly because of some issues and some of the people helping me troubleshoot and figure out the prime when I first got it told me to try running the unlock tool again and said i should get a response, but I always got the same network error. However I bought my prime second hand and it had been rooted before. Finally ended up doing some manual tests with ADB to determine if my problem was unlock related and it wasn't.
I had just gotten the prime, and people said even being unlocked I still shouldn't have gotten that network error. I just gave up after that, and have always wondered if it was related to it being previously rooted.
I can't unlock my tablet. I just don't get any error message at all. But I am 100% sure it's not unlocked.
No Problems here
I have a rooted 0.28, I did not root until after I got the 0.28 update.
I just ran the unlock tool downloaded from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510737
I had to use the dropbox downlown because the one from ASUS would not work.
Unlocked, no issues. No factor reset necessary, no removing root. Now i'm completely unlocked and ruined my warranty just for you guys.
Now i'm going to go install a custom rom.
Later.
Unlocking by a dummy
I unlocked a couple of weeks ago but it wasn't easy. Why? because I am half dumb and need reading glasses. It took me part of 2 days to figure out what was going on. I would get to the final scare screen that warns you that if you do this you are screwed forever and then I could not go any further. There were no buttons to click or agreement check boxes to check just the sad warning big as life.
Then I watched a video, the one with the hyper dude with braces unlocking his prime. And I realized I was missing the buttons on that warning screen. It occurred to met that I had amped up my font size so I could read my tablet without my reading glasses. This action made the font from the warning too big to fit the button on the screen. Went into settings, decreased font size, unlocked, never better.

have you tried getting a logcat of your prime while you're running the unlock tool? it's REALLY easy if you have adb setup. if not, you can do it from a terminal emulator app. PM me if you need more help.

No, never had to RMA. My device is from the US and I'm in Poland so I'm not sure if an RMA would work anyway. I've had it for a month and besides the left screen tearing issue, it works great!
I'm going to install Wooki first and see how that goes. TWRP is already installed and backup has been created. I'll report back if this fixes things. I'm going to try without doing a full wipe (cache and dalvik only). I don't really want to re-install everything.

From past experience, you should always do a full wipe especially if you want your prime to be performing well. Do a titanium backup of all your apps (the pro version is WELL worth the money) and you'll be up and running with an hour exactly how you were before. Good luck!

Yes, my experience with the HTC Desire tells me a full wipe is probably necessary, however I don't like titanium backup. It takes too long and it's easier just letting everything trickle in over the market. I've also found that, unless you're moving from 2.3 to 4.0.x clearing dalvik and cache usually works just as well. It's not like any rom formats the internal memory to use a different setup with better performance...though maybe that's not a bad idea.
BTW, when I said the one from ASUS wouldn't work, I meant it would not download. It just looping on my tablet to which browser it should use, and I eventually gave up and tried the other link.
Got my prime back from asus RMA no more chance to unlock. My prime was unlocked before send to RMA.
They changed the board or chip, when I did the RMA the .28 update JUST came out so I tried applying it before I sent it off. Worked, so it was updated. Then they sent it back after RMA and it was a March update, way back. Don't think they downgraded, but they did change something. Then no unlock at all (though I never tried beforehand, I imagine it would have worked)
Hi,
I don't have the same error message than you, it only say:
Failed to unlock the device, please try again later
I tried again later 3 times already. I have .28 and rooted, I just wonder if it fail because I am rooted or not.

I had .28 rooted and was able to do the unlock no problem. I had to download the app from a dropbox account as I was unable to download from ASUS's website.
The issue seems to be related to RMAs. I bought mine 2nd hand from a guy who got it from his boss, so theres no way of knowing if it was ever returned. It doesnt seem to matter on which firmware you are or if you are rooted or not.... All we (probably) have in common is the RMA factor. At least thats progress!

Nook serial number change

NT was bricked solid and AdamOutler's full wipe and restore was the only solution I could find. This method hoses the unit's serial number and now I can't get through registration process to re download all my books. I don't know how to use the adb command stuff, so has anyone found an app to reset the serial? I'm scared to call tech support as I'm sure they have that particular serial flagged in their system. Thoughts?
Thx!
~Vol
Good Luck, no one here really cares about this issue since the focus is anything but stock ROM. No disrespect to the hard working devs , It is just not a high priority.

Yeah but it affects others too. I want to go back to stock but others may still want to get B&N books and apps even while rooted. I'd like to know exactly what on the Nook is causing the register process to bounce, and is there any way to reset it.
Well, to fix things like this I think you have to get into adb and what have you. Take a deep breath and dive in!

Yeah. I've read through that one too, but I don't think it solves the B&N store lockout issue. Probably should've done a clearer job titling my initial post.
I have seen posts by individuals that returned their non-registerable NT to B & N and got it exchanged with no hassle under warranty.
I bricked mine too and used Outler's wipe which messed up mine too. Don't really care because I plan to keep it rooted.

Well, if you don't want YOUR serial number back, then what's the problem? What serial number do you want to put on it if not your own?
As long as it was registered to you (or you have access to the user info it was registered under) then you indeed need to get your own serial number back, and as I understand it that is what that topic covers. What BN has in their database is the original serial number and "current" user information (the last user to register the device). So you either need your own serial number or a "virgin" number (and I can't see where you'd find one of those!).

I don't think it's the serial number that's the problem. Like I said, I didn't do the best job titling my post. I'm trying to figure out what in addition to the wrong serial is keeping me locked out of the registration process.
Plus some of it comes from addl reading after my initial posted question. At first I thought simply changing the serial would fix the problem. I have since found that by itself won't do it. Honestly after reading, I'm not sure re-registration can be done at all without a full backup of original ROM (which I was too dumb to make).
You can restore the stock ROM v1.4.2 using the info and files from here.
