[Q] Dual touch or multitouch? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I'm loving my NT---and I'm sure I'll love it even more when we start getting custom roms that newbs like me can install hehe---but I noticed something while playing games.
Now, I got my NT spoofed for Nexus S, and I found that when playing Modern Combat 3, I can only use two points of contact at a time (ex. Joystick and firing). If I try to use three points of contact (ex. Joystick, aiming, and firing) something gets left out. This suggests to me that the NT is dual-touch, not multi-touch.
Is this a software thing or a hardware thing? And if a software thing, is there "an app for that"?
Thanks

This is something I have definitely been wondering about. If/when we get ics up and running on this bad boy, is this dual touch going to still be a problem?

We have a 16x28 point sensor grid. Its in the kernel configuration surely.

hrm.. actually, I'm sorry.. this is from my past experience with samsung multitouch devices and some research that I've been doing on our screen while trying to get ubuntu operational. Upon further investigation... apparently there is a special chip which contains firmware that talks between the kernel and the touchscreen. It is entirely possible that this chip is programmed to only handle 2 fingers.

Dead Space

Has anyone gotten dead space to run properly on their nook color? It installed and runs quite well on the nook color, however all i see is white screen. I'm able to move the character around but its difficult due to the graphical issue. Help?
Just tried it out on mine, running cm7 N157, and it's a no go for me. the game crashes right as the movie starts. Any tips for getting past that?

Same problem for me. The game starts up for a second, I see the logo and then it closes itself.
Make sure you already have the downloaded files installed under "ea" folder

I don't even get a movie or white screen... My screen lights up for a few seconds, and then closes the program. No warning or force close, nothing.
This is with multiple settings in Chainfire 3d's newest update. Even if I try to emulate it with the Qualcomm plugin.
Files are on SD card under ea
Edit: Forgot to mention that I tried this on both the .29 kernel and the .32 kernel.
Update: For those who have paid for this game, look for the Hacked Galaxy S apk file and the PowerVR sd card files, works a treat =D. So beautiful! One more reason it's okay I sold my PS3.

Didn't work for me. I launch the game. It checks for updates. I have a black screen, whith what looks like the bottom of a "marker" on the bottom of the screen for a second before it closes. No force close notification or error, the app just isn't on the screen anymore.
Are there any specific CF3D settings you're using? Do you have the EGL driver installed?

Did you make sure to replace the EA sd card data with the PowerVR files? As I made that mistake the first time.
No specific settings in CF3D, in fact, I would venture to say it doesn't need any since my default settings are for tegra, and that's what it's using.
No Idea what the EGL driver is...
Will also mention I am on the .29 kernel right now.
Yeah, I tried the regular SD files as well as the PowerVR files. With both file sets I tried tegra, qualcomm, and PowerVR plugins. No luck. I think I'm just going to give up, maybe I'll play it if I end up getting another tablet or phone down the road. Thanks for your help though!

Why would you use PowerVR data files if you have CF3D set to tegra? I'm not sure how that would work.
Our devices are PowerVR I believe. So it doesn't go through CF3D at all. I was merely mentioning, that I hadn't messed or done anything with CF3D to make it work.
My default settings just happen to be for tegra since I obviously have the tegra games as well.
My only gripe with this game so far... It's almost impossible to play with a touch screen, the controls are just really difficult to grasp. You have to run using your thumb on one side of the screen, while at the same time aiming and shooting with the other thumb. Ammo is even more sparse than the original games, and with how impossible it is to shoot the aliens just right, you never have ammo. Curb stomping requires a swipe, which can lead to a messed up camera and you dead. And the plasma cutter is hit or miss since it's in the corner of the screen, again possibly screwing up the camera.
Got to a point where I just kept running.
Other than that... Impressive graphics that would make any fanboy drool at the chance to play, story line seems pretty eerie and interesting from the first 30mins or so of play. In-ear headphones definitely make it just as traumatizing as the first 2. (Of course, my subwoofer does a much better job at making me jump ;p)
That said, if you still can't get it to work, I would suggest trying on a .29 kernel. Currently using Phiremod 6.2, less of battery, .29 kernel is just a much better kernel for those who aren't looking to not use their nook for long periods of time. N64oid is freakin awesome now ;p. Video is less laggy. So is flash.
Just a thought =D

Your post makes me want the nook to keep getting better, love my nook.

I don't believe it does, which is unfortunate with the recent release of SixAxis.
So, could you guys that have this up and running give us detailed instructions on how you got it to run? I have generated my imei number, downloaded and installed chainfire 3d, all of its plug ins, and changed my build prop to a couple of different things. tried a hacked version of the game, galaxy apk, sd cache, vr cache, still no dice. Been at it for like 4 hours, my ocd will not let me walk away.

How does Zelda OOT runs on your Nook? is it playable?
Since you have been at it for like 4hrs, maybe just for the hell of it, you should try the .29kernel instead and see if that's the missing link.
Will take a look at zelda later, beat it so many times I haven't really tried to play it.

For those of you who have it working I have a question.. Is it REALLY worth the $4.99!? Ive been spoiled by .99c games. Honestly I doubt I purchase it just because of that. But if Im missing out and NEED to play this game could any body offer a brief explanation why? I have read about the game already but would like to hear from someone who is playing on an Atrix. Thanks ahead of time.

i bought it yesterday, but didn't play it for very long. it's a pretty fun game, and the controls were really intuitive. it's exactly how you would want to control a fps on a touch screen, left side of the screen for moving and right for camera.
the graphics were pretty amazing for a smartphone, i was impressed. and i didn't experience any sort of lag, which was even better (using the 1.0ghz enhanced kernel CM7)
i'd say it's worth the 5 dollars, i only got about half an hour into it so far and was already satisfied with my purchase. the animations are all voice acted so far, gameplay is fun, and controls are great for a touch screen.
I highly recommend this game. Well worth the $5. The controls are much better than the gameloft FPS's that I've played and the graphics are amazing. When you compare the price to a console game it's a no brainer purchase.
On the gameloft shooters they kinda auto aim for you (sorta like goldeneye on n64) but on this game once you press the fire button you can move your finger and move your aim, like having dual joysticks. Also the left joystick appears wherever you put your thumb (on the left half of the screen) eliminating the problem of your finger missing the joystick.
The cover system is easy to use and works well. It's nice to have that instead of just having to run around shooting. The enemy AI isn't as good as many console games but miles ahead of other mobile shooters. Enemies will move from cover to cover, one will stick back while the other tries to flank you, etc.
There are a few very minor glitches here and there, but it runs very well on the atrix.
Well worth it...just be ready to kiss your battery byebye

Definitely worth it,especially considering it'll get an update for multiplayer in the near future apparently (forgot where i read it but it was a legit source). And the game is great to play, it has great graphics and is very smooth and fast.

Hey all over in the photon forums I have figured out the mapping to be able to use a PS3 controller with the game. I would post a link but I am on mobile. Look in the photon themes and apps. I'm using Aura 1.2.2.0 (just haven't made the upgrade to 1.2.2.2 yet) and had the "download is incompatible with your device" from the market, however, I was able to install via market.android.com
Also... Yesterday(?), there was an update available for the game. After installing it, the character was holding an invisible gun that shelled out little pink blocks. Apparently this was a pretty common problem. This was fixed by reinstalling the game after deleting /sdcard/Android/data/com.madfingergames.shadowgun

Sadly there is no way to make hdmi mirroring with the Atrix... Widescreen that is.
This game is great on both my Atrix and eee pad transformers. For anybody having glitches, just uninstall the game and reinstall. I had to do that on both devices afterthe update. Also for those who have an eee pad with dock, you can plug up an Xbox 360 controller and play the game like it is an Xbox 360 game, just loads faster.

I suck as FPS and I'm a sucker for eye candy, but I definitely think this is a 10/10. Very well polished game. Some FPS pros might get bored of it but I'm not good enough at the genre to make an informed decision lol

No. Most of the games that "aren't compatible" with the Note would run fine. My Xoom runs these games flawlessly and it has the same resolution on a larger screen and isn't as powerful. The Note is plenty powerful enough and virtually all of those "incompatible" games can be made to work with relatively simple root changes and sideloading. Search around a bit and you can find info on it. N.O.V.A. 2 running on the Note is nothing new....
Good luck.

I tried changing the build.prop to show as the international version. It worked and allowed me to download the additional game data. Strangely modern combat 3 worked perfect but games such as 9mm and asphalt 6 didnt work correctly. Asphalt had a strange camera angle where you are shifted to the right so itz unusable and 9mm has a pink color on the start screen. Probably due to the different hardware. I downloaded the adittional data for Modern COmbat 3 and changed the build prop back to the att galaxy note. Atleast i got one "incompatible" game to work
This happened to me as well, emailed google 3 times but no reply yet...
I can't even find the game in the market anymore, or in my apps.
please update once anybody gets a refund or get this game to work.
It should say incompatible before you actually pay.. I tried it with one of the other games and I clicked buy it started downloading and when it tried to install aborted and said incompatible, and I wasn't charged even though I authorized purchase...

Mass Effect: Infiltrator

This game came out for iOS a month or two ago and I've been anxiously awaiting the port to android. It shows as compatible with my Nook Tablet 16GB running cm9 .04 (oddly didn't show as compatible for my xoom, but sideloading after purchase fixed that).
Anyway, it runs reasonably smooth with minor glitches similar to what I experience with Dead Space, but on a much less annoying basis. Its definitely playable. Mind you it is a $7 game and requires a large download after installation for the game to run (few hundred mbs).
Link
I'll flash back to cm7 later and see if its compatible, but I have a feeling its not.
Edit: I flashed cm7 and was able to download from the store no problem. It also runs incredibly smooth.
Ill probably flash back to Cm7 myself, DL it, back it up with titanium and then flash back to Cm9 and restore it there. I'll see how it runs

Mass Effect works okay on CM9. I don't know if you've played Dead Space but its completely unplayable as the view point randomly changes constantly.
This happens to a much lesser degree with Mass Effect and IMO is playable.
It works flawlessly on CM7.

Cool, and yes I did try dead space awhile back. It played in portrait mode which was weird. I think there has been an update to fix that though. Plus inflitrator is on sale for memorial day, I'll probably pick it up especially cuz I'm getting a transformer pad 300 in the mail soon.

Yeah the portrait issue was lack of support for android 4.0. The fix came relatively quickly and plays great running on my xoom with an ics rom. Unfortunately as I said, its not playable on the current nook tablet cm9, likely due to the kernel. Mass effect is manageable tho, with a glitch here and there.
Both dead space and mass effect play smoothly on cm7. These games look great and show that big developers can really do some great stuff. I'm especially impressed with the touch screen control optimizations.

Playing it right now on CM7 alpha. It's playable, but IMHO it's finger crippling experience on a 7" screen.
Also I don't quite understand, whether there is a completely retarded slow motion system, or Nook Tablet has hardware/software issues that affect frame rate.

Is the finger crippling experience you're having due to the default controls? You can change it to be much much easier to use. I think if you uncheck "tap to aim" it allows you to manually aim which is actually a lot easier, IMO.
Also, I don't know if multitouch works on CM7, but I don't think it does on CM9 and thus it makes it a bit more difficult to play in the current state.

My fingers suffer from the length of swypes, which makes me think that controls were designed for smaller screens, where every point can be reached with thumbs.

Yeah I have this both on my NT and on my Transformer Pad 300. The multitouch issue isn't there on the TF300 and its much nicer to play on both of them with manual aiming. it makes me feel like I'm actually playing a game and not just tapping a screen repeatedly.

Shouldn't dual touch be enough? Same concept as a ps2 controller; your thumbs are the analogs.
Cm9 doesn't support this, so if you try to look around while moving, you will stop moving. If CM7 has dual touch, you should be able to move and look around.

Shouldn't dual touch be enough? Same concept as a ps2 controller; your thumbs are the analogs.

Sure, but not move, look, and fire at the same time. That becomes a problem when you've got multiple enemies and ya gotta jink around a corner to kill them. This is why I've been waiting on (and praying for) multitouch---I'm going through withdrawls

Vice City and other games incompatible

Putting this under the many issues I am having with the switch to Android from iOS. When I check out GTA: Vice City and Real Racing 2 in Google Play, it says my device is incompatible.
Does anyone else get this message? Is there anyway around it?
No, some game devs for some reason havent made their games compatible. Most games are compatible but a small number aren't. The few that aren't compatible should get updates soon.

GTA Vice City works just fine. I bought it when I had my EVO LTE, so I just put the APK on my phone and it runs perfectly.
Check your PM's.

Neither does Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Real Combat 4, and many other games that I've looked up. Is this due to the quadcore? or what?

Pretty sure it has to do with the screens resolution.

I'm also pretty sure it's due to the 1080p screen. I've seen people with the Asus Transformer Infinity having the same problem. Probably Nexus 10 people too if we look at their forum.
I had the same problem today with a game that i wanted to pay with a friend. I think that the screen had something to do with it buy what really pissed me off is that he is a die hard iphone 5 fan and trolled me by saying "oh look 1080p screen and it cant even run a simple game"..... I was like man **** you lol

Yeah this is ridiculous. 2 months in, and the top games aren't compatible with one of the fastest android phones out now.
Modern Combat 4, NFS: MW, Vice City, Real Racing, and pretty much any EA or Gameloft game.
I'm extremely disappointed.
They need to update soon because this years phones are all going to be 1080p resolution do it shouldn't take long.

Lot of these developers including some big ones are lazy @$$es.
It was same when Note came out and even with many new phones.
Most of the games will work fine even with odd resolution if they are coded properly. Most of the games are. But lot of game devs put device ID checks in Play store. So basically they disable the install of games on new devices. Many times they take their own sweet time to enable the game install on specific device in the name of quality control / compatibility.
But if you have them installed on your older phone which is rooted and pull the APK and put it on the DNA or my Nexus 10, most games work just fine even with high resolution displays. Its just that devs fearing the -ve reviews or bad star ratings in play store stop you from installing the game. When that happens, I usually write to the devs. Many smaller devs actually listen and I found it very surprising that many write back enabling access soon in Play store. But these big game developers who ideally should take less time as they have bigger teams and staff at their disposal are the ones who take more time to do so.
Makes me angry. And I wish Google implements a mechanism where we can get our money back any time in the future by returning the license if our new phones get the incompatibility issues which go on for more than 15 days. There really needs to be something like this.
It does not happen to even new phones with new resolution displays. This thing happened when SGS3 launched, then again with Note 2 as well. Both these phones had traditional display resolution. Still devs disabled the install in play store for a while fearing -ve reviews.
Unless you develop games I don't think you have the right to make that statement...

I have every right to make that statement when I can run the game without problem by pulling apk from old phone on my device but it's install is blocked artificially.
This is not new phenomenon either. Has been happening a lot for year or two now. It's all because they are afraid of ratings.
If you go through the initial days of sgs3 and note as well as note 2 forums you will see discussions on this matter there.
Some game had genuine issues and rather than fix a minor issue some games and apps were blocked for weeks to months at time. But at least they had genuine issues. Many didn't. Some were blocked in the name of exclusivity. Thankfully they couldn't ignore popular Samsung devices for long. But I have seen some lesser known phones having issues for months with installs being blocked for no good reason. Had issues with oppo finder and xiaomi phones in past like this.
And it's usually smaller studios that tend to respond quickly to user complaints when it should ideally be other way around.
It should not take a big studio 3 months to unblock install or patch the game for a new device.
From my Note 2, right in your face....
1080p is the future. not the past. they will be compatible or the market will force them to.
Modern Combat 4 works if you download the apk and sdcard data seperate. If you've already bought the game, I wouldnt think it to be unethical. But I don't condone piracy. This is mot the case for the majority of games that are not available though.
Anyone get the EA Scrabble game to work?
