3g speed - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
This isn't phone related but Im hoping someone could still help me?
I signed up to my phone provider on the understanding that i would get 7.2mbps. I know this is always "up to" but i have only been able to get on average 0.3mbps. I realise there are factors like signal strength and network coverage etc but i have done some tests with 7 other people on the same provider and they get equally poor speeds. I have done many tests from different locations and they are all poor.
So can anyone tell me what the deal is with "up to 7.2mbps" ? Can they provide 20 times less speed 0.3 mbps and still claim "up to 7.2mbps"? Is this sufficient to get out of my contract?
I did some tests from another network provider at the same time and they were running at 4.5mbps.
0.3mbps is painfully slow and simply not worth having
Im in Britain, are there any regulations that govern this "up to" business? 2 months and always less than 0.5mbps, rubbish!!

Best speedtest yet with this build. ([ROM] I9100XILA2)

If other people around you are also having poor speed, then there's nothing you can do. Your provider's network simply sucks and you're better off subscribing somewhere else.

Yeh those speeds are what i should be getting
And yes clearly the network provider doesn't have enough capacity, but Im locked in for 10 more months :s - in fact their helpdesk told me the network was at capacity, but as far as Im concerned that's not my problem and not what Im paying for, but the point is... Can i dump them with 10 months left?

Now this may not be the case with you but if it is T-Mob or Orange UK or some other UK networks then the thread below may enlighten you. This may not apply to other countries but does apply to third party contract purchases and most new T-Mobile purchases.

Some people have gotten out of there fixed line broadband contracts due to misleading "upto" ratings, but not mobile broadband as far as I know, the T&C's normally say that they guarantee nothing, not even signal. Its a shame. 3UK have good speeds, but whenever I try to tether it lags all to ****, and they ALLOW you to tether.
Im pretty sure there networks just mega overloaded, there's lots of nights where my upload speed is higher than my download, meaning the backhall to the tower doesn't have enough bandwidth.

Reading through your thread just made me sick! I don't care how they put it but you can't call those speeds 3g!
Just as ISPs can't call dial-up speeds / latency
Luckily T-Mobile increased their speed cap for 3rd parties to 1mb.. But, wait for it, if you go direct you get a whole whopping 2mb!!! Wow!!
Put it this way.. I'm never getting another T-Mobile contract, you should see the speeds you get with 3 (UK)

Thanks for the links and advice. Its a good point, should go find the t&c's and nail it down.
My phone and contract are supplied as one from a supposedly reputable Telco. So my guess is that they have oversubscribed on their network and hoped no one would notice... That ain't gonna fly
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Ouch. I thought I was getting good internet speed on T-Mobile UK on my S2 but after doing a speedtest I'm barely getting 1mb down and 0.5mb up :-/

When my phone, on 3UK kicks into gear (H+) and the network isnt lagging to hell I get.
433kBps down 207kBps up (The bytes per second) aka 3.39Mbps/1.62Mbps

Yes modem is one of the biggest on phone factors in connection strength and speed.

I phoned up to cancel my contract because of the problems and they said i had to go to the shop to find out what was going on. I did that and they told me they were unaware of any issues. Denial! And there is a new cell going up to"this week"... Really... Well we'll see

Ok I used to be demon man and had a htc hd2 if you go in there and look for the thread "virgin now has the htc hd2" right at the end there is a few of us who escaped our contracts because of there pittyfull internet speeds i cant find it to hand ill have another look for you to read through
Edit.
Have a read through the next couple pages. I found the right page just start from post number 118 mate hopefully this may shed some light to help you get out.

[Q] UK Network Data Speed Caps

I've seen a few people mention that various UK networks cap the mobile data speeds, especially if you buy from 3rd party vendors e.g. dial-a-phone or buymobiles.net rather than the network themselves.
Does any know how much truth there is in this?
This will probably decide who I get my SGS2 with...
Thanks in advance!
Afaik, tmobile uk only let 3rd party contact on 3g networks I.e. 385kbps. To get the full 1.8mbps you to pay an extra £5a month.
Anybody thinking they are being hit by speed caps should try using NDT mobile client from the marketplace as it details what is happening between you and the NDT servers.
I am currently testing a 3UK payg sim and getting 3Mbps down/1.4Mbps up
Sent from my HTC Hero
I know my original galaxy s through mobiles uk had no limt pulled up to 3meg tested on speed test. this was with vodafone
Thanks for the info guys. If everyone could post their experiences with their network and data speed/caps that would be very useful.
I'm currently using a HTC Hero with the latest VillainROM on T-Mobile UK (bought from tmobile).
I just done a few speed test with the speedtest.net app and I got:
Test1
Ping: 195ms
D/L: 153kbps
U/L: 180kbps
Test2
Ping: 265ms
D/L: 280kbps
U/L: 346kbps
Test3
Ping: 117ms
D/L: 277kbps
U/L: 332kbps
Test4
Ping: 350ms
D/L: 319kbps
U/L: 448kbps
These are pretty poor results... I'm gonna have to chase T-Mobile up about this.
p.s. I'm in Central London
I take it you missed my thread then

I spoke to T-Mobile yesterday. The lady I spoke too, her call centre manager and the top man off the forums whom she spoke to on the phone all advised me that there are no speed caps whatsoever. Whether you buy from T-Mobile or a 3rd party, there are NO speed caps, only usage caps of 500MB.

But what they told you has been proven to be false, members here have complained and had the limitation lifted, from 300kbps to 1.5Mbps
But dont forget the results will vary with times of day and network congestion..
Ive just run speedtest from just outside manchester so not on a congested city centre transmitter and also at a weekend.
Im on o2:
over 5 tests:
ping between 115/120 ms
DL between 3500-4023kbps
UL between 1582-1701kbps
Im pretty happy with that
even in city centre during the week i can consistently get around 3meg - i know because its faster than my company wireless which is capped at 2meg

This is true. I got Phones4u to get T-mobile technical support to confirm this over a conference call, and made sure the call was recorded in case T-mobile were talking rubbish. If I find its throttled, and they've clearly said its not, I now have evidence that lets me void the contract...
The tech support guy mentioned how newer contracts weren't affected. My advice would be to purchase using the distance selling act, and do some tests yourself. If you find it throttled, ask them to sort it in the next few days otherwise you'll invoke your distance selling act to return it.... that should get them moving!
NeoVR,
That's pretty impressive! And it contradicts whats the OP in:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054255 said.

I think Tmob speeds are just crap in general. My mate on 3 get 1.7mbps stood next to me.
I'm with TalkMobile (Vodafone) and so far it has been excellent, with no signs of any speed cap.
i am on giffgaff (see sig) which runs on the o2 network.
it is much quicker than i used to get on t-mo

ping: 154
DL: 3256
UL: 340
ping: 151

also on giffgaff, there us no FUP cap!

After being with tmobile for years, I only bothered creating an online account yesterday and found something very interesting. See attached screen shots
I also queried this.
All this does is put a cap on you data usage so you don't go over your limit.
E.G. If your limit is 500mb, you will not be allowed to go over 500mb.
I confirmed this with the South Wales call centre manager Dave.

From Google:
The "Capped Data rate" is actually a service on the account that stops you being charged at anymore than £1 per day for web browsing. Even if you have Web'n'Walk booster on the account its added automatically.
If you have the W'n'W booster (£5 per month) or get it free with Flext then you won't be on the HSDPA for using the internet. You will be getting 3G speeds (300k/s) as the service is throttled as its very unlikely a phone can display a website as quickly as HSDPA can download it
Thanks for the info guys.
I think I'm going to move over to Three... Had enough of TMobile!

[Q] Anyone else getting extremely slow data speeds

I know there are a couple other threads regarding slow data speeds. I'm starting this new one because my problem recently started happening. I had fantastic speeds (2.2mbps) of data speed on average with my EVO 3D and my wifes iPhone 4S up until about a month ago. I'm in the Virginia Beach, VA area and I'm wondering if its just our area? The morons at Sprint CC say its because of the influx of new customers due to the iPhone release. I now average 287kbps of data speed, and half the time my web pages won't fully load. I've hard reset my device a couple times, flashed different roms, etc... but still the same issues. Anyone else having the same issue? If so, where are you located?
Have you tried updating your prl? Helped me a little but not all the time. Since the iPhone was released and around that time they also shut down nextel, since then my 3g data speed has been cut in half on average, no 4g in lakeland fl.
I'm on the latest prl 21085. If you have 21083 or older they're out dated. Easiest way to update is go to settings, system update, then update prl.

Well you were one of the lucky ones then if you had those speeds...
I currently deal with your now current speeds all the time, but thankfully WiFi is everywhere for me...
I will say that a drop off in speeds due to more users on towers is expected but the amount of drop off you describe and it doing so rapidly leads to it not likely just being congestion on the towers and more likely something else...
When you tested the speeds did you do so at the same time of day then and now? They can drop off that amount or close to it over time of day. Like I test at 5am here and ill get 1Mbps easy but 3hr later I'm at 250kbps crap...
If i had to guess I'd say there's maintain going on the tower you pull from, tower issue currently of some sort, OR your stuck in 1xRTT somehow and need to reprovision your phone to fix it.

That site only shows work over the past/next 6mo so not really going to tell him much in regards to what he's showing...esp if he had 2Mbps 3G speeds before as in that case they would not be doing the T1 lines for that tower since it doesn't need it for data...

Everyone knew or should of known before getting the phone that lte was not up yet and you would be on the 3G network.
If your sales person didn't tell you this then I would take it up with your salesperson. If you bought the phone online then sorry about your luck, lesson learned. ( Hopefully )
Either way don't knock Sprint for something they have made clear. It was never stated to have 4G WiMax. Only 3G and lte when available.
Better speed.....wait for lte.

You brought the EVO LTE thinking you might get decent 3g speeds? I'm sure you're smarter then that or am I giving you to much credit? This is an old subject we should be discussed somewhere else.
I completely knew what I was getting. However, I did not expect slower 3G than I had with the OF EVO. Nor .MMS that don't download. LTE will be here soon but I'd like just a but of utility out of 3G...

All you guys complaining about 3g speed ever heard of the Network Vision?
BE PATIENT. Sprint is in the process of improving their entire network. You may not see the improvements yet, but trust me they are working on it.
I live in Aurora, CO and there are two towers here that are as opposite as night and day. One is totally bogged down and speeds are 200 kbps Down and 200 kbps Up with 400 ping. About 3 miles away, another tower gives me 1200 kbps down and 800 kbps up with 100 ping.
They are working on it, just have patience.

I've been patient with Sprint for over 12 years. I get that it is coming. The point is 3G is worse now than it was with the OG. And this is with new towers on 3G in the area. Simply pathetic especially considering I work and live next to a major international airport and large technology corridor.

You could always call the Sprint direct customer service line, 877-775-4886, and make a formal complaint about said speeds. See if they can give you some freebies if not some information regarding the Network Vision roll-out in your local area. Who knows, they might throw in some credit or something.

That might be my best bet. I was cool with 3G on the OG - hardly ever used WiMax since it was so spotty. I am simply at a loss for how this is playing out when everyone else seems to be having much better luck.
My 3g speeds are about the same as they were on my og evo, and most of the time they suck. The part that really sucks for me is that I might notice that my speeds are really slow and run a speed test, and confirm it, then an hour, or day later, the speed might be flying.
As an example, I just ran a speed test because it seemed slow, I got 203 kbps down and 506 kbps up. Yesterday I noticed it seemed faster than normal, so I did a speed test from my desk at work, the same location as the test I just did today. I got 2389 kbps down and 925 kbps up, by far the fastest I have ever seen it here.
At home I rarely see speeds over 100 kbps, yet just the other day I got about 1000 kbps down there. The bottom line for me is, I wouldn't care if the speeds weren't great if they were just consistent. It sucks when I need to do something quick and the data connection is crawling, which is the case more often than not.
I had a problem right out of the box. My ping was over 800 and was getting under 100 down. Weird thing wad that up was at like 300. I had this problem with my 3# so I called sprint and asked for my msl. Enter ##72786#. Enter your msl and then go to menu reset. It will reactivate. My speeds went up to over 1000. Worth a shot for u guys. Interesting sidenote... When I called in the tech told me to power down the phone and remove the battery. I let him know that these phones don't have removable batteries. i started flashing modems and found that got up to around 3-4 mbps on a good run but thats still high for me. its the main reason i am thinking of getting the US varient.
i was expecting to see at least a CONSISTANT 4-6 Mbps and i am struggling to keep a strong 2-3 and it makes surfing and downloading apps and files a drag.
if anyone has any other thoughts i would love to try them out.

This happens every where i go so far.....
can someone around the bay area with average download speed of 1-5 mbps or more post a screen shot of their mobile network setting ? so we can compare ??
Also, another thing i was thinking is that would it be because i am on prepaid plan ? it shouldn't have anything to do with that right ? its all non smartphone data service for prepaid or postpaid account..... i think..... soooo confused

I am going through this as well......and the only answer that even remotely helps is using different modems....i was at 200-300kbps ALL the time.
i started flashing modems and found that got up to around 3-4 mbps on a good run but thats still high for me. its the main reason i am thinking of getting the US varient.
i was expecting to see at least a CONSISTANT 4-6 Mbps and i am struggling to keep a strong 2-3 and it makes surfing and downloading apps and files a drag.
if anyone has any other thoughts i would love to try them out.

If its anything like Tmobile, the pay as you go plans lack roaming. So your signal will suffer. My buddy found this out after picking up a pay as you go plan. Call the network and ask if they have roaming on your plan. Then call a few more times to get a general consensus lol.

GPRS on 3 UK

Hi all,
I have just switched to 3 in the UK and have noticed that there appears to be no data when the phone rolls back to 2G (out of 3G/HSPDA coverage) so I get no GPRS.
Is this right?
I am aware that 3 uses Orange for voice and calls when out of there own coverage areas, but should I not be getting GPRS on Orange?
Thanks.
Yep three are 3g or 3g+ only

Oh dear..
Thanks for your reply.
Is there any solution to get GPRS while on Oranges 2G network?

nope!!!!
Oh dear, dear!
This isn't good news for me! Slow connectivity is better than no connectivity!
Hmmm, seems like I am not 'On the network for built for the internet' if I get NO internet!
to be fair, i rarely find myself in an area of no signal, but when I am, 3's internet speeds are outrageously fast.
well worth it
It's ok in 97% if the UK when it's good it's very good but when it's bad it's bloody awful
I went to Scotland a week and found the 3% of the country without coverage it killed me no.internet or phone for that matter
In defense of 3 they are superb value where else could you get 2000 mins 5000 text 5000 3 to 3 minutes and unlimited internet for £36
I.use around 7gb per month via my phone and tethering

Hi guys,
I'm not denying when there is 3G (and above) coverage it is very good. I was just shocked to learn that there is no GPRS backup, for me I'd rather have very slow data than none at all... It would appear from what I've found out that they don't want the users to have 'a bad customer experience' when on GPRS thinking that it's a slow network... Not sure I agree with that, especially when you desperately need data, even it is it GPRS...
I would really like them giving users the option to fallback onto GPRS by maybe manually entering APN settings, this way at least having a choice (knowing that it is GPRS and not their own 3G network)...
Interesting...

I agree with you 100% I went with three's one plan for the data, this month I have used 8.7GB from the 14th yes their signal can be sketchy at times but if I had a 1GB plan I would have clocked up hundreds on my bill so its bearable for me.
When I say their signal is sketchy I get a full signal on my window ledge but on the sofa under the window I get 1 or 2 bars literally less than one foot distance.

I'm not complaining about the price or the allowance, nor about their network speed. I was just saying it would be nice to have the option to fallback to GPRS data when 3G isn't available. I had no diea this would happen when I signed up 5 days ago, and it is a problem for me to not have that...
So far I am happy enough with the speed and the allowance, etc... Which is why I moved over to 3 in the first place...
If you are in a marginal signal area, you may have a reasonable signal outside your property, but because 2100mhz signal doesn't penetrate walls well, it may not get inside your house. Walk around the outside perimitter of you property, checking the signal strength as you move - if there is a good signal, then there are solutions for getting that signal inside using 2100mhz signal boosters, their use seems to be a legal grey area - but no one has been prosecuted for using them in the uk as I understand to-date. I too have no signal in 80% of the inside of my house yet am very close to a 3uk mast, but I live in a building with 2ft thick walls. I have just installed a signal repeater and, although I am still playing about with the siting of the antenna and booster, it has deffinately made a difference.
If you have only just taken out your contract with 3uk - you may be able to get out of it if you wish - they are obliged to check that there is an available signal at your registered address and should have refused your application if not. Hope this helps

Three only use 3g I would when I first signed up to them I did ask about 3g coverage and they said they only use 3g, ask the right questions and you would have known, if it's only been 5 days you should be able to cancel if you want (I think three say 14 days and get another contract, but I personally wouldn't I'm happy with them because of the unlimited data.

i wouldnt get too attached. 2G will be turned off and reassigned for new spectrum auctions in the very near future. i have been on 3 for 2 years and i have never not had 3G for long.
GPRS cant cope with normal web anyway. it was designed for WAP. its not a big loss trust me. At least you can still make calls.

I did ask, they told me that when out of their coervage it reverted to Orange, which I was on before. What they didn't say was that when it reverted to Orange, it wouldn't include data. I'm not saying they lied, they were however, a little economical with the truth!
I have spoken with them, they are allowing me a little more time (over 7 days) to see how it all works out. As I travel quite a bit I will have to see how much this affects me. I think I will end up staying as it makes more sense for me to have unlimited data than pay Orange quite a bit over my monthly plan for the extra data used...

Ahh I would recommend staying, while three have a lot of drawbacks the well priced unlimited data makes it worth it imo up to now on a 1GB plan I would have an extra £700+ on my bill and I still have 13 days on this billing cycle. Anything other than unlimited data is unacceptable now in my eyes.
The only other option for unlimited data is t-mobile but it will cost more (I think £40+ with the phone)

Three has been 3G only for quote a few years now, when they first launched they used to use Orange or O2 for 2G fallback but they didn't renew these agreements as their own 3G coverage was deemed strong enough.
It would not have taken much research to find out they have no 2G coverage, also if you just asked someone before taking the contract out...did the name Three not give you any indication?
the only thing going for three is the 'cheaper' priced tarrifs, much faster 3G network and no fair usage, apart from that their offers are on parr with other special offers on other networks.
The lack of 2g is a bit of an issue if you are in a no coverage area, however if you do have coverage your fine.

And that's what matters these days, data costs a lot more than voice and texts, you can rack up a larger bill in a shorter time with data than with anything else, also in the world of data speed matters a lot. Lets not forget the economy I get 5000 texts, 2000 mins and unlimited data for £34/month nothing beats that with a galaxy S3 and lets not forget the £700+ on my bill for data I have saved with 3, I don't think it's possible to do that with voice and texts.

I went through hell to get a 3 contract cancelled and a MIFI portable broadband dongle contract scrapped because I couldn't get a 3G signal. They dropped 2G in places they deem to be "good coverage" and are turning more and more of their back up network (Orange) off.
They are the worst provider by far. Now with T-Mobile and I get T-Mo and Orange coverage since the merger. Can switch as I please.
