Hello,
I tried to find help on existing topics before resorting to begging for help but I'm baffled now.
I rooted my i9100 some time ago and tried to install CW with no avail using ODIN.
To be specific, the root worked, but when I try to boot to CW, I still get the stock screen.
I tried following the post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I'm not sure what Kernel to get however. (I'm attaching a snapshot of the about section)
I hate to ask people to babysit me through this but I am kind of lost. I rooted and flashed custom ROMs on my HTC desire with no issues so I'm not a complete noob but I'm just not sure what my next step is.
If it matters at all, I get the yellow exclamation when I boot the phone up.
I'd like to pop ICS on the phone so I would appreciate some help.
Thanks in advance guys,
Vitaly

You want to go for "CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip", you match up the KG2 bit then see there is two KG2 kernels, one for 2.3.3 and one for 2.3.4, you have 2.3.4 so you want the one i mentioned above.
You flashed a insecure kernel (name for a kernel where ADB has root privalages) it seems, rather than one with CWM/auto rooting.
As far as ICS goes, its not really stable yet, and generally user beware. If you are not an advanced user I would advise against flashing it. If you must there are quite a few threads will full flashing guides, this one being the main one for samsung ICS leaks, or theres CM9, but again there are lots of bugs etc.
Thanks.
Just to clarify, what's the difference between all these?
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_JP_XSG_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip

The XX_OXA_KG2 bold bit is a region code, so the same version number KG2 may be used for more than one region specific rom, it doesn't normally happen, and it doesn't normally matter, but in this case some of the roms are 2.3.3 and some are 2.3.4, as stated above.
Thanks, I'll give it a try when I get home.
It works now, thanks for your help.

I just want to root my S2 but don't want to encounter any glitches and issues that some people seem to be having with these different Kernels. My stock Kernel is UGKG2.
Bell Canada Galaxy S2 Released July 21st 2011
Model Number GT-I9100M
Android Version 2.3.3
Baseband I9100MUGkG2
Kernel version [email protected] #2
Build Number GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Unlocked from Bell and using on Rogers.
It seems the 3 different KG2 Kernels that are currently available are:
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_JP_XSG_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
What one should I use? I don't want to experience network issues or any weird glitches. Will there be a stock UGKG2 coming out in the near future that I should just wait for?
Am I even asking the right question? Please excuse my newbiness. I've been reading through hundreds of posts and it's just making me more confused. I've tried SuperOneClick but it hangs at Step 5.
I'm not sure I understand this whole rooting thing. From what I gather, to root you have to use a different Kernel. And it's that Kernel that is giving you root privilege? Yet I see people saying something about CF Root. I think I'm way off somewhere...
Thanks.
Ok, let me start this off by explaining something.....
The rom letter versions are actually based upon 5 letters, not 3. There are several variants of KG2. Basically, the Samsung naming convention is as follows:
Model name: I9100M
Provider/Area: UG (Bell/Virgin/Sasktel)
Rom Version: KG2
Now, the rom version can get broken down into each letter as well...
K = 2011
G = July
2 = 2nd version that month.
All area's roms are developed completely separate from each other...
Ours is UGKG2. Which is unavailable for download from the Samsung servers, so we're not able to actually get back to stock, or make any kind of custom firmwares/kernels based upon it.
All the other ones, including ZS, JP, and XX are completely different roms and kernels than what we have on our Bell phones.
The KG2 that either of those 3 kernels are based on are either 2.3.4 roms or different 2.3.3 roms. So, matching that is no different than installing a KG1 or KG3 or any KF* CF-Root kernels. ChainFire has not made a CF-Root based upon UGKG2 yet, so no matter what one you install, it's not based upon our rom, meaning you can basically install ANY CF-Root Kernel and as long as your phone still works with it, it doesn't matter. All the roms are completely different and the naming convention has nothing to do with each other unless all 5 letters/numbers match up.
Personally, I'm waiting for our stock rom to be released for warranty return purposes before I flash one of the root kernels.
However, if you're willing to take the chance, I suggest installing a 2.3.3 kernel as that's the UGKG2 Android version.

Thank you Electroz.
I'll wait and keep an eye out for ChainFire to come out with a stock one for us then!
Another thing that confuses me is this:
People are talking about using one of the Kernels to root and then reverting back to their backed up Kernel while still maintaining root? Is that possible?
ie.
I pick a 2.3.3 KG2 Kernel, root and then use a backup of my UGKG2 again? Then all is good? And I'm rooted? Probably not eh?
That works in theory. However there is no way to root without flashing over our stock kernel. So until our firmware is available on the Samsung servers, we cannot go back to the stock UGKG2 kernel if we overwrite it with a "root" kernel.

I'm so glad I found this thread. My SII is my first Android device and I was looking on rooting it but I'd rather wait for a way to revert back to stock kernel before I do so. Can others who have rooted their phones please tell what kernel they have used?
Flash CWM kernel and root using SuperOneClick, or flash Dark Core 1.4. That's what I used on mine. Downside is the original kernel hasn't popped up in the net yet, so there's no going back til it does.
If you need to get rid of the yellow triangle you'll need to use the download mode jig to wipe the flash history.

If you can live with the yellow triangle (or can jump through a few hoops to remove it) then just flash one of the custom kernels. I'm using Niphetamine and it's been spot-on.
I just registered on this site to freaking thank you Electroz.
Your post answered pretty much all of my questions.
Wow. So did I! I'd like to add one question though. What brought me here is that I have HORRIBLE Battery life with my SG2. Had it for 1 week, and I'm usually down to 40% by lunch time. And that's with what I'd consider light to moderate use. There's definetly something wrong, and I was thinking that it was the firmware version that I had.
Probably wrong thread for battery life question, but it is somewhat related to the firmware... so can it be that, or could I have a defective battery?
I also have a Bell SGS2 with Kernel UGKG2.
Loaded an insecure Kernel and I rooted it.
Unlocked it with Galaxy S unlock app. (The Galaxy S2 unlock app didn't find the code)
Used it for 2 days on Fido's network with the insecure kernel. Battery life was horrible. It'd be completely drained by 4-5pm. (about 8-10 minutes calls, about 30 minutes internet, about 30 txt messages) Yellow triangle was there.
I also couldn't use Kies from PC. It wouldn't recognize my phone.
So, I re-flashed with stock XXKG2 kernel since ours (UGKG2) is no where to be found. I know it's not the same, but at least, it's the same build. Insecure kernel is an old build (with all those problems that are now corrected with more recent builds).
After flashing with XXKG2...Triangle gone.
Battery life is greatly improved from insecure kernel. Same usage, still have about 15-20% when it's time to sleep and recharge.
I can also connect to Kies on PC now.
I think it's the best solution for now for the people like me who absolutely need root to unlock asap.
I'll flash the stock UGKG2 once it's out.
EDIT:
By the way, re-flashing to a stock kernel after rooting (in my case XXKG2) doesn't remove root.
Just flashed my buddy's i9100m with CF-Root XXUG2 kernel and it booted with a yellow triangle in boot screen, and went into the system
I guess it worked as I can see SU on it.
thats a great explanation on the first post thanks alot, i was wondering if anyone here could make a backup with clockworkmod from a rooted galaxy s2 that still has the UGKG2 on it and post it so i could get access to the baseband file and use it as a restore, that would be very appreciated!!!
im getting the worst reception, cant even send text messages outdoors!
and forget about data.... all i can use is wifi

could u or your friend post a backup so that i can restore from it?
I have also flashed my phone with XXKG2 Kernal, and so far so good. I am also using Canada's version of the phone. I wished that I would have read the forums better before I did as I failed to make a backup. Seeing as this is my first Andriod phone I didnt know any better. With the exception of some GPS lock issues everything has been great.
Keep up the good work XDA devs, you guys rock! I have really learned alot creeping these forums the past few days.

I don't know about on the SGS2 yet as I just bought the phone about 2 hours ago. But I just came from the SGS Captivate, and I had these same kind of issues with battery on CM7.1 custom ROM.
I found that flashing a new modem greatly improved my battery life, I went from being completely dead by about supper time (with light-moderate usage), to over a full day usage.
On that note though with the custom ROMS they are missing drivers to turn apps off supposedly so I don't know if that will come into play, but it would be something to look into if the issue still persists.
Since I can't post in the main thread in the development section, I wanted to make sure I have the right kernel for the CF-Root process after reading the post I've quoted at the bottom of this post.
My phone is on Android 2.3.4 and XWKI4.
The latest rooting kernel that I seem to be able to get from the CF-Root thread is: CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip
That seems to have CWM4 in it so I'm worried that I'll have the same problem as the poster below, (since he is also on KI4)?
Thanks in advance.

As I do not trust your signature, please post your current ROM and kernel versions.
Then it is a lot easier to recommend a corresponding CF-Root kernel which will root your phone.
you have the correct cfroot for the version you have posted..
other poster did not read or know what he was doing.
IV4.4.KI4tar does not exist.
Honestly, pretty much any of the CF-Root kernel versions will work.
I realize that people like to keep the same kernel as the stock ROM and that this is the philosophy behind it, because I am one of them, but in reality, the kernel version itself doesn't change enough to make any significant difference.
Try it out. Flash any version with any Stock ROM.
Bet they all work. I tried a few (not all) and they all worked fine.
Thanks

Thanks. I'm just getting started on all this, so apologies if I'm being a bit dense
I understood that using the same version (KI4 etc) would be useful in avoiding the "yellow triangle" thing where you have to do some fiddling about re-flashing with the same version ID. I could probably just about manage to recover from a situation like that, but I'd rather not take any more risks than I have to (being a noob at this).
Since Cosmic Blue has confirmed that I have the right kernel, I'll use that and keep fingers crossed. One day when I get better at this I may be more adventurous!
Thanks to both of you for the help
hello,
my sgs2 is still "untouched" - I mean it has its factory kernel and is not rooted yet.
but I plan to root it...
but before I do that, I wanted to know, if it is possible to save my original stock kernel (e.g. via odin?) before I flash e.g. a CF-Kernel (by chainfire)? So that I can return to my very own original stock kernel which was delivered by samsung for this device... is this possible?
I know there are some stock-kernels available to download, but I'd rather want to backup my very own and put it back on the device, if I want to return to this kernel (unroot, etc.)
PS: here's a post where I asked accordingly if it's possible to safe my very own stock-rom... I'd appreciate your help concerning this topic also very much!
thank you very much!
Hi,
I just rooted my SGS2 last night and I had the same question as you.
As long as you get a kernel which matches yours or as close as it matches yours it should be fine. I flashed an insecure kernel because I used s2root (which works brilliantly!) and then ran s2root, and then flashed my original kernel back using odin3. The kernel is exactly as it was before I rooted and I still have root permissions. If you don't flash your original kernel back after rooting, you will see a yellow triangle under your boot logo.
Here is the guide to s2root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
And here is the list of unstable and original kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
If you can't find your kernel version listed there, try the link provided at the top of that page, and you should find yours (I found mine buried in there, both insecure and original).
To check your kernel version, go to Settings > About phone > (kernel version).
Enjoy rooting!

hi chris,
thank you for your quick response. but my real question was if it is possible to backup my very own stock-kernel which is installed at the moment (from samsung)... I don't want to download a "original" kernel but instead use my own backup - if this is technically possible - which is my question in this thread.
I understand what you mean, I wondered if I could do this too.
I have looked around and found this 'app' which allows you to back up your current kernel, and then you can restore it later on (well that's what I assume it does!)
The only thing is that it is called SGS Kernel Flasher, so I'm not sure if it works on the SGS2. It was posted last year so perhaps there is an updated version?
(www)dotaddictivetipsdotcom/mobile/backup-restore-and-flash-samsung-galaxy-s-kernel-with-sgs-kernel-flasher/ (sorry it won't let me post outside links!)
The only thing is I think you may need root access to perform any type of kernel back-up?
I'm not sure, but I just know that when I re-flashed the kernel that matched my original one back, it was exactly the same, so I can't see how Samsung could tell the difference.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help, I dug around on the internet and it was all to do with flashing new kernels, so perhaps it can't be done?
Chris.

thank you for your answer. this is what I mean. does anyone know even more details about this? is it possible to use odin for example?
Hello Everyone,
I am not new to android as I have had multiple android devices, however I purchased a SGS II from a friend and he rooted it. However, he does not remember what software he used to root it. So I used the one click method and it said it unrooted it no problem, however superuser and CWM is still installed and JD plus says it has root access. The kernel is XXKG3 and I installed and used it no problem. However, again when I go to CWM under current kernel: unknown. I tried everything I can think of, searched these forums the best I can and I still need help. Can anyone help me? If so, greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all your time
Have you tried flashing another kernel like siyah?
How will using that kernel help? Just out of curosity, I dont know too much
You have not searched properly. All you had to do was use the search button use a few keywords and boom you have the results. But anyway here i go.
To root go into Chainfires thread that is in the original development and look for cf-root kernels. Flash that through odin and it gives you root and cwm recovery and manager. Once you have done that it basically roots your phone. Now if you want to unroot all you have to do is flash official firmware from Intratechs thread again in original development section and your phone will be unrooted..Guides on how to do that are in both threads and at the first page. Now this is were you come in
Read read read...read the information given in those threads and you should understand more and you should be fine. good luck
I did do my research, I must have missed them. I will be trying this tomorrow, thank you!!!
Just flash a stock rom and then flash cf-root kernel mate..

I couldn't find an answer on the threads. I rooted my at&t last night w entropy512s one click kernel and root. Well I'm new to the phone tech so it took me a while. I now cannot use any of the market Hotspot apps to run my tablet off my s2 wifi. I could before the root and from what I was told it should be easier to do this after rooting. Am I missing something? Is there a special way I have to do it now? I'm so confused.

I'm not familiar with those applications. I don't know any reason they would not work. And it's not clear from your post what exactly the problem is. You mean you can't install them, or that they do not produce a wifi signal even though installed?
Anyway, almost all custom roms include portable wi-fi hotspot, as well as usb tethering and sometimes bluetooth tethering. Since you have rooted, why don't you go ahead and pick a custom rom and put that on. Problem solved.
There is a good guide linked in my signature.
Yeah, once you have a custom rom, just use the built-in tethering. Works great for tablets.
Yea I can install them, I've tried a few of them and none put out a wifi signal. I don't know what rom I should flash yet. Since I did the entropy512s one click root+ kernel I understand that the kernel is gingerbread, does that mean I need a gingerbread rom? I was hoping for the latest, greatest build. Any guidance is GREATLY appreciated as it took me hour just to root. Lol

Since you used Entropy512's package to root, you have a stock kernel. In order to install custom firmware, you need to first install a custom kernel that contains ClockworkMod Recovery onto your phone. That kernel must be Gingerbread. However, once you have the kernel and CWM installed, you can then flash any firmware you choose, Gingerbread, ICS or JB.
The guide which is the first link in my signature contains all the info you need.
Fantastic. Thank you so much for your time. I will try first chance I can.

I will give you two pieces of advice:
1: Follow the instructions given to you by Creepy (and any instructions in the OP of ROMS) to the T.
2: Read then read some more. When you're done with that, read it all over again. Afterwards, follow step 2 again. This goes for searching about any issue you may come across.
Have fun, this device is really amazing once you figure out more about it

Good plan. When you get the cwm kernel, do a nandroid backup then pick any rom you like... (cm10 nightly just came out, if you like jellybean)
AOKP by Task650 is another JB alternative.
Which is better you ask? Gonna have to try them both! They both offer stability and great user experience for most who try them. Maybe you're a GB or an ICS kinda guy though!

It really doesn't matter much which kernel you choose for the next step, because it's only on your phone for a short time. Assuming you rooted with the Gingerbread stock plus root package, then you need a custom Gingerbread kernel which has ClockworkMod Recovery. I believe the links in my guide for the kernels are still working links.
The root I did said it was root + kernel. I take it the one with the entropy512 one click root+ kernel doesnt include the cwm. Im sorry im jist trying to understand the whole process not just do it. Alot of what i read doesnt click. Loke when I rooted it took me 6+ hours because I didnt know you want to save the file not open it when downldng it. also I read the deleting the tethermanager2.apk will open wifi/tether. True?

Essentially, yes, but if you're going for custom ROMs, that's not what you want. There are easy ways of getting back to stock if all else fails.
You gotta know what you want first, before you move forward. I know you want tethering to work, and people here have recommended moving to a custom ROM because tethering does not seem to work for you on rooted, stock ROM and stock kernel. So do you want a custom ROM instead (you'll lose some of your current data via that route)? Or do you not care about ROMs and you just want wifi tethering to work now that you're rooted?
Assuming you want just the latter of the two options, I would recommend that you first try a custom kernel (this is different from a custom ROM, but note most custom ROMs include a custom kernel upon install). You mentioned Entropy's Daily Driver Gingerbread kernel, which is a great one. I'd recommend installing it and seeing if that fixes your wifi tethering problem. To install, use Mobile Odin lite version; you can find that apk in Creepy's guide. Download and save the zip from Entropy's DD thread, then extract the zImage file from it (make sure to use the name "zImage", no file extension, important) and move that to your phone via USB mounting. After that, in Mobile Odin lite navigate to the zImage file and flash it; viola, you now have Entropy's custom Gingerbread kernel and stock GB ROM. All custom kernels include ClockworkMod (no other way to get it), so you have that too.
If the custom kernel alone does not fix your wifi tethering problem, then maybe it's time to move to a custom ROM. With CWM, you can flash anything (ROMs, kernels, what have you) much more easily, but we'll get to that after you get the kernel, which is part of the process anyway.
These instructions are all repeated in paragraph 3a of Creepy's guide, and more information is written there, so I would recommend reading it thoroughly so you do understand. I know it's frustrating at first, but you'll get it, and you seem like the type to eventually get it right and understand what you're doing.
THANK YOU!!! I will try that tonight. That was very helpful info. So I CAN do this right from phone the? I saw there were some Apps that can do stuff like that but wasn't sure if they worked. I think I saw one linked to the superuser app. Ill keep you updated
