[Q] Rooting - which kernel please? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since I can't post in the main thread in the development section, I wanted to make sure I have the right kernel for the CF-Root process after reading the post I've quoted at the bottom of this post.
My phone is on Android 2.3.4 and XWKI4.
The latest rooting kernel that I seem to be able to get from the CF-Root thread is: CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip
That seems to have CWM4 in it so I'm worried that I'll have the same problem as the poster below, (since he is also on KI4)?
Thanks in advance.

Reply (lt_ler):
As I do not trust your signature, please post your current ROM and kernel versions.
Then it is a lot easier to recommend a corresponding CF-Root kernel which will root your phone.

you have the correct cfroot for the version you have posted..
other poster did not read or know what he was doing.
IV4.4.KI4tar does not exist.

Honestly, pretty much any of the CF-Root kernel versions will work.
I realize that people like to keep the same kernel as the stock ROM and that this is the philosophy behind it, because I am one of them, but in reality, the kernel version itself doesn't change enough to make any significant difference.
Try it out. Flash any version with any Stock ROM.
Bet they all work. I tried a few (not all) and they all worked fine.

Thanks

Thanks. I'm just getting started on all this, so apologies if I'm being a bit dense
I understood that using the same version (KI4 etc) would be useful in avoiding the "yellow triangle" thing where you have to do some fiddling about re-flashing with the same version ID. I could probably just about manage to recover from a situation like that, but I'd rather not take any more risks than I have to (being a noob at this).
Since Cosmic Blue has confirmed that I have the right kernel, I'll use that and keep fingers crossed. One day when I get better at this I may be more adventurous!
Thanks to both of you for the help

[Q] backup my own original stock kernel

hello,
my sgs2 is still "untouched" - I mean it has its factory kernel and is not rooted yet.
but I plan to root it...
but before I do that, I wanted to know, if it is possible to save my original stock kernel (e.g. via odin?) before I flash e.g. a CF-Kernel (by chainfire)? So that I can return to my very own original stock kernel which was delivered by samsung for this device... is this possible?
I know there are some stock-kernels available to download, but I'd rather want to backup my very own and put it back on the device, if I want to return to this kernel (unroot, etc.)
PS: here's a post where I asked accordingly if it's possible to safe my very own stock-rom... I'd appreciate your help concerning this topic also very much!
thank you very much!
Hi,
I just rooted my SGS2 last night and I had the same question as you.
As long as you get a kernel which matches yours or as close as it matches yours it should be fine. I flashed an insecure kernel because I used s2root (which works brilliantly!) and then ran s2root, and then flashed my original kernel back using odin3. The kernel is exactly as it was before I rooted and I still have root permissions. If you don't flash your original kernel back after rooting, you will see a yellow triangle under your boot logo.
Here is the guide to s2root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
And here is the list of unstable and original kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
If you can't find your kernel version listed there, try the link provided at the top of that page, and you should find yours (I found mine buried in there, both insecure and original).
To check your kernel version, go to Settings > About phone > (kernel version).
Enjoy rooting!

hi chris,
thank you for your quick response. but my real question was if it is possible to backup my very own stock-kernel which is installed at the moment (from samsung)... I don't want to download a "original" kernel but instead use my own backup - if this is technically possible - which is my question in this thread.
I understand what you mean, I wondered if I could do this too.
I have looked around and found this 'app' which allows you to back up your current kernel, and then you can restore it later on (well that's what I assume it does!)
The only thing is that it is called SGS Kernel Flasher, so I'm not sure if it works on the SGS2. It was posted last year so perhaps there is an updated version?
(www)dotaddictivetipsdotcom/mobile/backup-restore-and-flash-samsung-galaxy-s-kernel-with-sgs-kernel-flasher/ (sorry it won't let me post outside links!)
The only thing is I think you may need root access to perform any type of kernel back-up?
I'm not sure, but I just know that when I re-flashed the kernel that matched my original one back, it was exactly the same, so I can't see how Samsung could tell the difference.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help, I dug around on the internet and it was all to do with flashing new kernels, so perhaps it can't be done?

Please help with CW / Kernel

Hello,
I tried to find help on existing topics before resorting to begging for help but I'm baffled now.
I rooted my i9100 some time ago and tried to install CW with no avail using ODIN.
To be specific, the root worked, but when I try to boot to CW, I still get the stock screen.
I tried following the post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I'm not sure what Kernel to get however. (I'm attaching a snapshot of the about section)
I hate to ask people to babysit me through this but I am kind of lost. I rooted and flashed custom ROMs on my HTC desire with no issues so I'm not a complete noob but I'm just not sure what my next step is.
If it matters at all, I get the yellow exclamation when I boot the phone up.
I'd like to pop ICS on the phone so I would appreciate some help.
Thanks in advance guys,
Vitaly

You want to go for "CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip", you match up the KG2 bit then see there is two KG2 kernels, one for 2.3.3 and one for 2.3.4, you have 2.3.4 so you want the one i mentioned above.
You flashed a insecure kernel (name for a kernel where ADB has root privalages) it seems, rather than one with CWM/auto rooting.
As far as ICS goes, its not really stable yet, and generally user beware. If you are not an advanced user I would advise against flashing it. If you must there are quite a few threads will full flashing guides, this one being the main one for samsung ICS leaks, or theres CM9, but again there are lots of bugs etc.
Thanks.
Just to clarify, what's the difference between all these?
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_JP_XSG_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip

The XX_OXA_KG2 bold bit is a region code, so the same version number KG2 may be used for more than one region specific rom, it doesn't normally happen, and it doesn't normally matter, but in this case some of the roms are 2.3.3 and some are 2.3.4, as stated above.
Thanks, I'll give it a try when I get home.
It works now, thanks for your help.

[Q] Totally lost...Help me?

So, after reading through all of the Noob threads and such, I'm lost. There seems to be contradictory information, I'm not sure which phone mine even is (kidding, I know its a SGH-i777) or how to get anything started.
I just came from an ATT Motorola Atrix 2, and I was fairly familiar with that. I had it rooted and running a custom ROM. It seems to me however, that there is a LOT more going on for this phone than the A2.
There's things I don't understand. I know about ClockWorkMod backups, installing .zip's, restoring from backups, rooting (using Super1Click) on my A2.
What is/are ODIN? Modems?
How many of the ROMs are actually ICS?
and is CM9 a nightly or a daily (currently) ?
And I sincerely apologize. I am fully expecting and knowlegdgeable about the 'search bar', FAQs, etc that are going to come my way.
If anyone has a few simple answers, that would be greatly appreciated.
I'll lend a hand.
Well, firstly, I hope you know that the only way to get CWM on our phone is to install a custom kernel (can't update CWM on it's own either, the only way to change what version of CWM you have is to install an updated or different custom kernel).
Odin is a PC program built by Samsung for flashing proprietary roms. We've just adapted its use for flashing custom roms too, though only for flashing stock rooted ROMs without bootloaders (usually includes kernels). Heimdall is the equivalent program that also runs on Mac/Linux.
Modems are CWM-flashable zips that change the baseband, deals with signal strength and cellular data speeds (does not affect wifi speeds).
Most of the first page of the Original Android Development section are custom ICS roms: ShoStock2, Phone Bricker, CM, AOKP, Foxhound, etc just to name a few. I have no idea if CM is daily, I don't use it.
The links in the sticky by Red5 at the top of this (and every I777) forum will get you started, especially creepyncrawly's guide.
Hit thanks please! And good luck
EDIT: I felt compelled to add this. I don't know how flashing works on an Atrix, but for I777 NEVER FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS (unless you absolutely have to in order to get back to stock, and you know full well what you're doing). That's the one way to risk hardbricking your new phone.

hehe, got a kick outta this question. What would be the difference? the time of release?
Nightly's are just an automatically compiled ROM. Normally one a day.
There is no CM9 stable for our device yet......and anyways AOKP is better
karate has covered pretty well.
To add to his response to your question about ICS ROM.
Chris made this great thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532368
About CM9 nightly, AFAIK, they compile/build/ and upload during night time (to 2am or 4am). That's why it gets that name.
And basically all of this could have been found using the almighty Google. But you already have your answer from some if the nicer people on the forum.

Help. I please.

I couldn't find an answer on the threads. I rooted my at&t last night w entropy512s one click kernel and root. Well I'm new to the phone tech so it took me a while. I now cannot use any of the market Hotspot apps to run my tablet off my s2 wifi. I could before the root and from what I was told it should be easier to do this after rooting. Am I missing something? Is there a special way I have to do it now? I'm so confused.

I'm not familiar with those applications. I don't know any reason they would not work. And it's not clear from your post what exactly the problem is. You mean you can't install them, or that they do not produce a wifi signal even though installed?
Anyway, almost all custom roms include portable wi-fi hotspot, as well as usb tethering and sometimes bluetooth tethering. Since you have rooted, why don't you go ahead and pick a custom rom and put that on. Problem solved.
There is a good guide linked in my signature.
Yeah, once you have a custom rom, just use the built-in tethering. Works great for tablets.
Yea I can install them, I've tried a few of them and none put out a wifi signal. I don't know what rom I should flash yet. Since I did the entropy512s one click root+ kernel I understand that the kernel is gingerbread, does that mean I need a gingerbread rom? I was hoping for the latest, greatest build. Any guidance is GREATLY appreciated as it took me hour just to root. Lol

Since you used Entropy512's package to root, you have a stock kernel. In order to install custom firmware, you need to first install a custom kernel that contains ClockworkMod Recovery onto your phone. That kernel must be Gingerbread. However, once you have the kernel and CWM installed, you can then flash any firmware you choose, Gingerbread, ICS or JB.
The guide which is the first link in my signature contains all the info you need.
Fantastic. Thank you so much for your time. I will try first chance I can.

I will give you two pieces of advice:
1: Follow the instructions given to you by Creepy (and any instructions in the OP of ROMS) to the T.
2: Read then read some more. When you're done with that, read it all over again. Afterwards, follow step 2 again. This goes for searching about any issue you may come across.
Have fun, this device is really amazing once you figure out more about it

Good plan. When you get the cwm kernel, do a nandroid backup then pick any rom you like... (cm10 nightly just came out, if you like jellybean)
AOKP by Task650 is another JB alternative.
Which is better you ask? Gonna have to try them both! They both offer stability and great user experience for most who try them. Maybe you're a GB or an ICS kinda guy though!

It really doesn't matter much which kernel you choose for the next step, because it's only on your phone for a short time. Assuming you rooted with the Gingerbread stock plus root package, then you need a custom Gingerbread kernel which has ClockworkMod Recovery. I believe the links in my guide for the kernels are still working links.
The root I did said it was root + kernel. I take it the one with the entropy512 one click root+ kernel doesnt include the cwm. Im sorry im jist trying to understand the whole process not just do it. Alot of what i read doesnt click. Loke when I rooted it took me 6+ hours because I didnt know you want to save the file not open it when downldng it. also I read the deleting the tethermanager2.apk will open wifi/tether. True?

Forget i asked. I re read your comment. Ok its a stock kernel. So it wouldnt. I understand. A stock kernel probably would make it easier to return to stock. right?

Essentially, yes, but if you're going for custom ROMs, that's not what you want. There are easy ways of getting back to stock if all else fails.
You gotta know what you want first, before you move forward. I know you want tethering to work, and people here have recommended moving to a custom ROM because tethering does not seem to work for you on rooted, stock ROM and stock kernel. So do you want a custom ROM instead (you'll lose some of your current data via that route)? Or do you not care about ROMs and you just want wifi tethering to work now that you're rooted?
Assuming you want just the latter of the two options, I would recommend that you first try a custom kernel (this is different from a custom ROM, but note most custom ROMs include a custom kernel upon install). You mentioned Entropy's Daily Driver Gingerbread kernel, which is a great one. I'd recommend installing it and seeing if that fixes your wifi tethering problem. To install, use Mobile Odin lite version; you can find that apk in Creepy's guide. Download and save the zip from Entropy's DD thread, then extract the zImage file from it (make sure to use the name "zImage", no file extension, important) and move that to your phone via USB mounting. After that, in Mobile Odin lite navigate to the zImage file and flash it; viola, you now have Entropy's custom Gingerbread kernel and stock GB ROM. All custom kernels include ClockworkMod (no other way to get it), so you have that too.
If the custom kernel alone does not fix your wifi tethering problem, then maybe it's time to move to a custom ROM. With CWM, you can flash anything (ROMs, kernels, what have you) much more easily, but we'll get to that after you get the kernel, which is part of the process anyway.
These instructions are all repeated in paragraph 3a of Creepy's guide, and more information is written there, so I would recommend reading it thoroughly so you do understand. I know it's frustrating at first, but you'll get it, and you seem like the type to eventually get it right and understand what you're doing.
THANK YOU!!! I will try that tonight. That was very helpful info. So I CAN do this right from phone the? I saw there were some Apps that can do stuff like that but wasn't sure if they worked. I think I saw one linked to the superuser app. Ill keep you updated

[Q] closest s3 ROM to stock? i7777

I still run a stock ice cream, I'm officially going to root it and put a custom fw on it. It would be a miracle at this point if they updated it.
What is the closest to the s3 rom? I'm guessing its shostock3? I really want a stock rom, with all the samsung apps. I know people ask all the time what the best rom is etc etc, but is my assumption correct here? i777 here.
my only fear is that shostock will be worse on battery life than an official one, but at the same time, that could be a false notion with me.
Thank you for any input.

With any custom ROM you should get better battery life as opposed to the stock ICS ROM, as there are kernel bugs that drains battery at a faster than normal pace.
There is also an issue with the stock kernel that can permanently brick your phone (do NOT perform a factory reset or wipe of any sort unless/until you have replaced that kernel!!)
SHOstock3 can get awesome battery life.
so is shostock3 the only rom that gives me jelly bean + touchwiz 5 ? and the samsung apps ? I saw the music player is the same as the s3 etc??

Here's my suggestion: make a nandroid backup, flash SHOstock3 and see whether you like it or not.
I installed Fromaroot and rooted the phone. I'm trying to get CWM on there now.
I was trying to do it without odin and without using a computer much. Did I mess up the process doing the fromaroot, it did succeed. All I have now is the android recovery(which i'm guessing isn't much help?).
I'm trying to install shostock, but it looks like i already need a kernel that has CWM already on the phone before I install that? I don't want stuff that is already iterated to me repeated, and have the thread locked.
But can I use mobile odin pro to install a kernel with CWM? or should I really be using the computer right now to do all of this?
Thank you

Assuming the root process worked correctly, then you *can* use Mobile Odin (pro or lite) to install a custom kernel containing ClockworkMod Recovery. For more detailed information, please see the guides linked in my signature.
even though it says I already need a kernel that has CWM to install shostock on the official page?
sorta came off as most people will have already been flashed etc.
the last thing i want to do is brick my phone on the first attempt. Also what kernel should I flash, there is so much outdated info out there. I dont see anyone on here mention fromaroot but it worked perfectly, maybe it's a bit of a newer tool.

Read the 1st link from creepyncrawly's signature to get started.
Simple rule to follow. Look what version of Android your phone is running now, and then read the related posts for flashing kernel, ROM, CWM, etc. That's how I did it. This phone is almost 2 years old and of course outdated info is floating around.
For me, it took less than an hour to root/flash the phone, but days to read through all related posts.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.
You started out with stock 4.0.3 (or 4.0.4.) Your stock kernel contains stock 3e recovery, which you can not use to flash custom firmware. So, to put custom firmware on the phone, you need to first flash a kernel containing CWM Recovery. (There is no stand alone recovery on this phone. The recovery is built right into the kernel.) You can do that by several methods. Using Mobile Odin is the quickest and easiest. It's almost fool proof.
And yes, the phone is starting to show it's age, and the guides are getting a little out dated. But the information is still good. What is important is understanding the process. You (and everyone) should understand exactly what you are doing before you modify your phone. Once you understand the process, you are much less likely to make a paper weight.
For a custom kernel, use one of the ones linked in the OP of the thread for 4.0.4 ICS, UCLL6 plus root which is also linked in my signature.

Just to recap, to go from stock to custom firmware
1. root
2. install a custom kernel containing CWM recovery. It should be a recovery that works with your current system.
3. use CWM recovery to flash the firmware of your choice.
4. profit
Thanks guys,
I've actually flashed a few phones for my friends, read up and 20 mins later i was off an on.
This was a bit more of a trouble for me though. Tons of ways to do it, many versions of this phone, half the time i would be reading and be like, damn this is not for the i777 can't take any chances.
i'm going to put that kernel on there , and then flash shostock3 , seems to be the closest thing to an s3 like experience on this phone.
I was / still am, heavily worried about battery life, something keeps telling me this is like going to cut my battery in half, i blame the experience on the t mobile g1, where i put all these roms on my friends phone and it just sucked away the battery.
Hopefully shostock3 does a good job though! ICS just isn't cutting it anymore

Oh, and this is the stock battery that came with the phone in Oct. 2011. No telling how many charge cycles on it. At least 4-500.
got shostock3 on it, runs beautifully
battery life so far is just as good or even better than stock, lots of bloatware gone.
Thank you to everyone.
Fromaroot > 4.0.4 custom kernel (mobile odin) > shostock did the trick, couldn't be easier, if you ever really motivated and didn't mind waiting a bit, i guess you could do that whole process with just the phone.
only thing i used the computer for was transferring files.
and now 4 days later the official one comes out!
Everyone lost hope, even me!
I'm tempted to try it out, but at the same time, i'm quite happy with shostock3

mr-cook has a modified stock version. It's stock system plus root and busybox, and the jebo kernel. So if you wanted to try it out, you could make a nandroid backup of SHOstock3, try out the cooked rom, and if you don't like it, go back real easy.
Stock s3 experience

Try the Alliance Rom, it has the Samsung app store and you register with Samsung when you first boot up.
