Bootloader question... - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

So I know there are already some pretty talented devs working on the prime. My quotation is... Is anyone working on unlocking the bootloader? Just curious.

I doubt anyone is working on it. Asus has already said they will unlock it. It would be nice if a dev could figure it out so we didn't have to possibly void our warranty, but hacking an encrypted bootloader is not easy without a leak from Asus or direct help from them.

Yep we need a leak, bc 128 bit encryption ain't no picnic

No one is gonna work on the boot loader since it would take so much work to gain such little ground with the unlook tool coming at some point.

On a serious note... Can't wait... My prime should be here next week. Can't wait until we get an unlock and have ViperROM on this beast! I'm about to switch back to it on my 3D!

What we should do is start asking Asus when are they going to unlock it for us. They claimed once ICS dropped we would get access. I have wrote on there FB and twitter profiles and asked when are we going to get it unlocked. I think we need to ban together again and spam the crap out of them to get what they said they were going to give us.

We have bigger fish to fry, let them get this thing working correctly first, we have root, just have to wait a little bit. I read on here somewhere about a February release time frame..........

Because asus really needs another thing to be bothered with right now, when their current flagship tab is experiencing many quality control issues.

I agree. As much as I'd love an unlock tool now, I'd say we should all wait until most of the problems settle down a bit before we go spamming them about it.

Yeah, but we could have the developers here working for us as well. A lot of them could do better jobs than most companies to fix the problems. Having asus working on one end and developers here, we could accomplish so much. Once the bootloader is unlocks it will still take some time for the developers to do there thing. So the earlier they have access, the better IMO

Sorry to revive a dead thread but I didn't want to make a new one.
Why wouldn't devs want to unlock it? That way we don't have to void our warranty. Also, how do we know it will be a complete "unlock"? If you have looked at HTC's unlock tool, you'll know what I mean. If you use HTC's unlock tool, it makes it a ***** to flash kernels, cant be done through recovery, and they cannot flash radios with their unlock tool. How do we know that asus won't pull the same ****. This is just my opinion though. I'm not a dev by any means.

I'm sure the devs would love to just be able to unlock it but the encryption they use is so good you basically need Gary Key or someone from Asus to leak us the bootloader encryption key. Brute force methods would apparently take longer than the life of the device.
I just wonder how many devices would not have been returned if we could do a proper wipe on our own had the bootloader not been encrypted.

I flash kernels every couple of days with my HTC unlocked method Evo 3D. The only thing that sucks is that I have to be at a PC to use the fastboot method to get into recovery. There is also an app that you can use to flash a kernel. I haven't tried it yet, but I heard it works great. I haven't tired flashing a radio yet though so I can't comment on that. If it was just a locked bootloader that would be one thing, but they (ASUS) put a 128bit encryption on the bootloader as well. It would take a long time for them to break it. Maybe with the unlock tool, someone could see how they use it and find out how to break it with out using the tool by ASUS. But we won't know until the tool is out and available to the public. I am hoping once it's available, and rom's/tweaks/kernels/ect start being made, more developers will buy a TFP and join in to make this tablet into a beast!!

I think Asus unlocking the bootloader would be a brilliant move for them. They would get rid of sooooo many warranty claims. It would be the single best thing they can do to keep the TP from becoming a major financial black hole for them.

Asus like any company comes down to being a business and businesses want money not to please every customer corporations are greedy and that's the facts

But don't you see ? If they allow you to unlock your bootloader, the moment you do that you are waiving away your rights to warranty. So one less warranty claim to worry about. One less warranty expense going against what must already be a very deep hole in their earnings.

It better be fully unlocked with an nvflash recovery! Otherwise I am returning it both of them and the dock
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Yeah, I know there has to be a lot of people who wouldn't have returned theirs if they could have simply downgraded back to Honeycomb while the issues with ICS were worked out. That along with it voiding everyone's warranties would have meant a whole lot Primes not getting returned.
Asus is in the business of making money though so apparently they make more of it by having a wifi tablet locked down while the returns roll in than they would otherwise. I can't imagine too many devices being bricked because of flashing roms but apparently ASUS has done the research that it is cheaper for them to do it this way.
It certainly isn't carrier influence, which I could see in the case of a 3G/4G device, but this is a wifi only device. No carrier to screw over here with tethering or whatever.

The bootloader will be unlocked, it's just a matter of when; we're trying to get it ready to release and hope to have this soon. Our official announcements, since this is a priority situation, will go directly to our social media outlets when they're ready (like the previous announcements). You'll hear about it when I do. I don't see any evidence that their definition of soon matches with my definition of soon...it is a relative term, after all.
I'm going err on the side of caution, unfortunately. They have 2 weeks.

Everyone is rather impatient here. I understand it, but It is not like a company can output a perfect unlocked everything for a phone overnight without bricking a large number of them. It takes time.
I apologize for the repeat thread. Half these threads present have people up in arms and intending to return the phone. So I posted a new thread in hopes of lighting up the mood.

I would imagine it has more to do with appeasing partners (read: Sprint) than it has to do with technical hurdles...though I'm sure there is still a redundantly redundant amount of testing involved. Most of it is probably policy and politics than anything else.

Thats not how they are going to do it simple as that. I asked given xHausx suggested they just post up a firmware.zip on their site for those that wish to flash and get the ENG bootloader flashed and achieve s-off. Their response was that "...that is not the way they choose to fix the problem, and they will do so with a OTA software update.."
end of story is that it WILL get done, but there is no ETA as they NEVER provide ETA's specifically. And they do this b/c there is no telling what problems might arrise while developing the fix. If they said 2weeks and ran into an issue and got delayed then there would be another uproar tossed at them.
Also why when they say they are releasing a new OS update they usually say by the end of X qtr. so they have a TON of leway.

If teamwin does it great. However I would be very surprised if there weren't strings attached to HTC's solution and no thanks to that. If the SGS2 would be announced for a pre-September release date the 3D is going back.

Well, in if that happens in 2 months from now you and the 3 remaining devs will have a blast I'm sure. This technology moves way too fast for delays like this. The first 30 days is a given, return period, time to root, etc...but this time we are up against heavy duty security for heavy duty securities sake.
While I do exaggerate a bit my point remains. We don't have time to wait as much as you think we do...developers want to develop, and when they put a commitment into a device, well, not being able to develop a god damned thing for that device is kinda a turn off. Few of our best ROM developers are also the low-level guys doing the heavy lifting and intense probing and testing required to attain root/s-off...there is an overlap, yes, but most of these guys just want to make a rom or work on a kernel, and that is to say nothing of the theme guys who operate as creative talent before technical talent...
This is an elaborate ecosystem of skills and talents here. If you happened to be one of us lucky ones in the EVO4G community from the beginning you should know that it was a bunch of coincidence and a pre-release root (and the happenstance of Sprint getting its first kickass superphone--now a regular event)...so don't expect that magic to sit around waiting for this phone to be opened up.
I'm not saying it can't happen, but that there were a lot of factors that went into it happening last time--just having a decent phone and a forum weren't what made it happen.
Let me start by saying yes, I am dying to have root myself. I miss cm7, wireless tether, even stock themes, tb, and a whole list of things (my ORD is definitely flaring).
Now let me go on to my real point. All you "omg they have two weeks" people... Is the phone really that unusable as it is? My old hero, I couldn't live without root for overclocking. My shift originally ticked me off with crappy old sense, and then I didn't understand why they didn't make the new update sense 3.0. This phone, at least for now, is up to date, and blazing fast. Root is not a deal breaker on this phone for me like my past phones. And I hack everything... Wii, cr48, router... But I don't find it completely neutering on this phone like other devices

It's a very capable phone, I agree. But it has far more potential than it has capability...and I didn't buy this phone to only be as capable as the phone it was replacing (a heavily modded EVO4G) with the only difference that I can actually see is a resolution difference.
Sure, we knew it would come locked. I knew I'd have this decision to make. It's a very capable phone. But it is also capable of so much more...that's what I want out of it. My 4G was doing everything at least as fast and with at least as good battery life with far more flexibility...
...the only reason I am so impatient is for the reason I posted above. If it doesn't happen relatively quickly the spark will fade rapidly. I feel very comfortable in the 30-day window. But as the 30 day window closes I am not going to be the only one who sizes up this situation and has to make a decision...more important than me and you and all of the other users there are the developers. The ones who provide the value-adding goodies that we love so much...without them we just have a phone like a million other phones, excuse me, that takes 3D pictures and/or Video...the only differentiating feature really....sure, HTC didn't sell a device that was intended to do the things I want to do with it--but it could...until they made it so it couldn't specifically...artificially...
You might not get it...if that's the case, congrats, this is the phone for you. No regrets. Rock on. But for me and what I would imagine are the majority of others here that is a deal breaker.....
@daneurysm: very, very well stated. I'm with you 100%

I have purchased your mogul, evo, and now evo3d. I would like to say that I love the evo3d, its an amazing device. But, if the bootloader isnt unlocked or rooted by the time my 30 days is up, I will be returning it. I feel as though I own the device, and used my hard earned money to buy it, and like a computer I should have access to it. I understand the consumer doesn't matter at all in todays corporate run world, but this is my stance, as is many others. I bought it, I own it, it is no longer yours or sprints as I'm not leasing it, I own it, its mine. Thanks, maybe.

I certainly understand that you're looking for the bootloader of the EVO 3D to be unlocked. This is indeed something that we're working on, true to our word. We don't have a date set yet for when the update to do so will be available, but as this is a high priority situation when there is news on the subject it will be posted to our social media outlets, like our Facebook and our Twitter just as the previous announcement was. I hope that it is soon.

Yeah that sucks, but what did you really expect? HTC can't be expected to support unlocked phones bc ppl can really screw up their phones if they don't know what they're doing. HTC is only protecting themselves and this was absolutely expected IMHO. Good news article though regardless.

Hmmm.... Lets see here.
1. Root Phone w/ out HTC.
2. Do whatever you want.
3. Have hardware error and need warranty repair.
4. Back to stock we go!
5. ????
6. Profit!

Wow, it got moved really fast! Lol
So what would that do to Sprint insurance if you root with HTC? Does that mean you might as well cancel it or will Sprint still replace?
Do you think HTC knows we already have these devices unlocked. Lol
Although sucks if this is where Androids future is going.
I'm glad that some companys have listened to the community. We asked for them to give us unlocked bootloaders t and they are ACTUALLY delivering. Of course it voids the warranty I'm not suprised at all. Stops *****ing bout it cuz they could've NOT unlocked them and than everything would be the same. Change is good in my opinion.

Definitely will. We'll have less people coming over to this forum and whining at us because we won't hold their hand through the entire rooting process (although there has been enough of that already anyways), and more time for expansion ROM cooking.
And +1 to easily being able to fool anyone into thinking our warranty isn't void.
Lets be honest here, anyone on this forum would never use the MFW anyways, we are all here for one reason and one reason only. To get the most out of our phones and exploit their capabilities. You technically void your warranty with any other root anyways, so what's the difference? We are all taking a risk at doing anything with our phones in the first place. I can't say I blame HTC for taking their stand. They will give you the unlock, but you have to be willing to put your feet in the water too.
I just think it's funny. During the flame wars there were multiple people saying "htc would not release something that voids warranty."

I saw this posted yesterday, but ever since I started rooting phones with my Hero a year and a half ago I always knew it technically voided the warranty. It is easy to switch back to stock and I have never had them even check when I returned a phone in the past.
Glad that they are going to release it. Not suprised that it voids the warranty. No different than putting mods on your car.....

Isn't that what RUU's are for?! I haven't had any problems at all returning previously rooted phones to Sprint, even after bricking my GF's Optimus S trying to get it back to stock, they took it back and gave us a new one. If you don't know how to revert to stock, you shouldn't be messing with root in the first place.

I'm losing faith in the quality of HTC's dependability. They even drop your warranty if you transfer your evo to another line on your account. That's retarded because you're still the user of the device.

im interested in a way around it too. similar thing happened on epic 4g touch. unlocking the bootloader caused a counter to be set off and an ugly triangled appeared in the boot splash (proving unlocker was used). but after a while, they figured out how to do it without the phone recording it was unlocked. i want this for the prime, in case i ever have to send it in

@strechwookie - since they are using only a few SBKs for all Transformers I think the SBKs will soon be read from the tool so you can unlock without it.
Could be like the Atrix too, when unlocking it's bootloader you permantly burn a fuse... so while you may be able to "hide" the unlock on the boot screen by returning to stock, a savvy RMA tech could still tell if you had originally unlocked the bootloader.
Sent from my CM7 Atrix 4G
I rather think they are going the HTC way. This tool won't be some kind of *.exe you'll download but a webinterface.
You enter your serialnumber and it generates an unlock code based on the serial number.
This was ASUS will always know if you used their tool or not.
The only chance for us getting away with warranty is to write some kind of keygen which does the same as ASUS' tool.
If they are doing it right this won't be possible.
Of course someone could always try to hack the bootloader AlphaRevX style, but i guess not many would be brave & experienced enough to try that.
normally, and with every other device i have owned i have not hesitated to unlock bootloader and void warranty as i have been confident in its build quality, but with this, not so sure. I have already returned one for the reboot issue, an the current one i have has some kind of screen touch issue where when i touch the screen it creates a sort of watery thing under where i touch- only in one particular area of the screen, and there is a part under that which is too white... hard to explain , but long story longer, i dont trust Asus' build quality to void my warranty totally.
I still believe it should be like the nexus'- why should rooting automatically void ALL warranty? If they stuff up the screen, battery, chip etc how would me running a custom rom affect that (assuming it hasnt- eg. OC to extremes etc)...
so i will be RMAing my prime before unlocking and then i will think about it long and hard and hope for someone to come up with an unofficial way to unlock... plus Asus will probably screw us over like HTC did with their pseudo unlock...

I'm surprised they didn't release it earlier. It'll free them up of people making anymore warranty claims on bad hardware. That's what scares me a bit. I'll wait until ROMs show up first. So far, no hardware issues for me.

Not really, its normally fairly easy to reverse a root and put it back to factory settings so they will never know.

Unlocking bootloader

Just out of interest, are any devs working on hacking bootloader? We had similar thing with HTC Sensation, where HTC promised unlock tool ( and fulfilled their promise) but AlphaRevX beat them to it with Revolutionary. Advantage of Revolutionary is that HTC don't know about you unlocking bootloader and its easy to return to complete stock for warranty purposes.
I'd rather do it this way than official way. So, is anyone working on it? I think I've seen IEF lurking around here.

This is for the prime right? Cos the voodoo root tool also has an unroot option, I've returned 2 primes so far, both rooted, and unrooted. Using voodoo, had no problems returning them. Chances are they will be returned to asus by who ever you buy from, not sure places like comet or pcworld would have any idea how to check if you have altered anything and by the time they make it back to asus you will have your replacement. I even forgot to unroot a htc desire once returned it to virgin and never heard anything more about it.

I'm not talking about root. I'm talking about security off flag here, which would allow flashing custom roms.

Tinky, I too am wondering about this. I know that early on in the forums people were talking about the encryption and the difficulty in unlocking the bootloader of the prime. I also don't know if the announcement of the unlock tool so quickly might have discouraged devs from trying. I hope they are out there working on it but I haven't seen anything about it here.

I looked to buy the Nook Tablet for a while before I realized I had more money than I thought. My Prime is on its way.
The thing is they have found 2 ways past the locked bootloader. One is an exploit in the code and another was said to be universal. The coding talk was way over my head, however someone should definitely check them.

Well, not many people are daring enough to risk bricking a $500 tablet. I would though if something like RUU for HTC were present. Sadly though, I heard NVFLash don't work.

Once bootloader is unlocked you can use update.zip to flash RUU back. It doesn't have to be RUU.exe

Sorry my mistake then. Personally i very much doubt they will unlock the bootloader until they aren't spending all their time with fixing other things. Last thing they will want to do is have to deal with peoples bricked primes. Even if its the users fault it will still take time to work out what they have done, cos the shops will be the ones returning them. Not the user.

Can you link us the two sources you read. Id be interested myself as a programmer.
I don't think that the quality Devs are working on this. Or they're being drowned out by all the crap on these forums. Coming from the Captivate, galaxy s, and nook communities on XDA, this forum is a mess, and its not the fault of any mod. I would hate to be a mod on this forum.
As for attacking the bootloader, I think that many are waiting to see what method Asus uses to see if they can duplicate it for ourselves. With no UART access known yet or secure recovery option, no ones wants to risk it, as was mentioned earlier. We need an AdamOutler or the like to unify the work being done and take the lead on this tablet.

Its gonna be difficult for any Devs to unlock the bootloader because if i recall the Primes BL is not only locked but encrypted as well...Without the keys..finding a way is extremely difficult..so unless someone from Asus decides to give use the keys..we're stuck waiting for the unlock solution from Asus..Devs don't wanna brick their devices as stated since its so difficult finding a prime..Another device I have the Atrix also had a locked and ecrypted bootloader...it was only unlocked when Moto unofficially leaked a build that had a fastboot unlock command present.

I remember that as well. However, I don't know if you remember kholk over in the Atrix forums. He was said to be extremely close to cracking the bootloader. Also, we had a custom recovery long before a bootloader unlock. I wonder when we will see one for the Prime.
You just have to go over Nook Tablet forum on XDA, its exactly AdamOutler and others, Nemith etc who unlocked the thing. I followed them in real-time from november to january. The threads in android development are all there, ex : " Unlocking the bootloader and next steps "

Developers are smart. They're also patient. I believe that instead of unlocking something that will be officially unlocked in a month, they choose to bide their time or attempt other projects.

That didn't stop AlphaRev from unlocking HTC Sensation and multiple other HTC phones (encrypted bootloader I mean). There is always a workaround, its just a matter of finding it if anyone is looking at it.

So I helped adam and those guys root and unlock the nook tablet, and let me tell you we spent countless nights working on it. It was only in the source code that we found the loop hole. I'll go snooping around the source code to see if there's anything I can use. There's always a fail safe designed into the system the question is why would we need need it. They said they were going to release it in February so let's give them their time and see what they can do.

Well I suppose technically they have a week left to do it, but come on, do we really think they'll release it next week? How long did it take for the original transformer? did they promise an unlocked BL for that?
Asus download site now has Unlock Device v6 for ICS in the support section

Root? S-Off?

How close are we to gaining S-off/root? The only threads that are being posted in in the past 2 weeks are the rom threads, and those are for the unlocked phones only.
So, how close are we to getting our phones rooted and such?

So there's literally nothing that can happen until verizon allows s-off? I'm probably completely incorrect in thinking this so correct me if so but, isn't s-off just unlocking the bootloader? Motorola phones always have their bootloader locked, but they have plenty of roms available, as well as root...

no unlocking does not give s-off, but when unlocked you can flash roms and kernels using adb, you can't flash radios though. with s-off you don't need to use adb or a computer to flash, and you can flash anything
basicly all you need adb for is to flash the boot.img of the rom after flashing with recovery

Verizon will never give s-off.
there is hope they allow us htc dev unlock back and as soon as that happens, s-off will come with it shortly after
there no saying "how close" one is to cracking an exploit...
I'm happy knowing that someone is indeed working on it though.
Yeah I'd probably be tempted to switch to the Razr M as soon as it gets root. I'd love to stick with this incredible though. It's like the only form factors I enjoy are locked tighter than ever

Right?
This phone is slowly dying and it sucks... I shut mine off and turned my rezound back on because of no root... It's not looking good for the inc4G community especially if something don't happen soon... Because in another month this device will be considered old...then nobody will but it. Keep your fingers crossed tho maybe someone will figure it out

Yea it doesn't make sense, it flat out pisses me off as I'm sure the rest of you guys. I don't have the damn phone, but I really want it for the form factor that it is and phablet that it's not. I mean, hell the guys over on the gsiii got that unlocked, not sure if it was VZ or the developers over there but it's rocking and rolling, no reason why they shouldn't allow us the same.
Even their stupid data plans are out now which make it so convenient to share your data, legally tether in other words, so it's not like were just looking to root it to take advantage of their phones. The Crapple 5 is on the shelf, so what's the hold up VZ. Sorry just frustrated with those clowns at VZ.
Thankfully the OG Dinc guys are still hard at work dev and that allows me to run with JB on my outdated ride but if she goes up in smoke, I gotta real dilemma, lol..
I'm glad to see folks are still trying to work on it here, this could be a hell of a phone and forum if you guys crack this mother

The main problem is the device isn't getting any attention from devs... Which means its not high on the list to unlock it... Inc 2 got lucky because it came out with froyo and a lot of exploits were already made for it... Ics is a ***** to crack

Does all this crying really help out the cause? This is an amazing phone. I left my rooted Dinc to come to this phone. It has a better camera, processor, sound, and 4" screen that is better and still fits in my pocket.

I love the phone. It's absolutely better than my original Incredible, but I would love this phone all that much more if I could root it. I don't care about S-OFF or unlocked bootloader as much as having root and being able to do some of the stuff I could on my Incredible. Like Andy has said, as soon as we get any form of root, even temp root, we'll have S-OFF. We just need that little step first.
I gotta say I feel really bad for you guys. I was strongly considering this phone, even though I pre-ordered a GS3 to keep my unlimited data in tact. I planned to either sell the GS3 on eBay or exchange it for the Dinc 4G but I ended up sticking with the GS3 out of laziness. I was jealous that you guys had an unlocked bootloader from launch but what a dirty move on Verizon's part making HTC take it down. Really horrible.
So I've been following progress here ever since. I'm glad there are people doing work on it, as perhaps someday I'll have the upgrade I originally wanted; one I can comfortably hold. I basically have to two-hand this thing.
Here's to hope for the future!

^ That is exactly why I wanted the Dinc4g. The signal is solid, it's very fast - both processor and 4G internet ...and it fits in my pocket nicely.
it. just. needs. root.
It maybe because there is no htcdev unlock too. I plan on getting this phone, but my upgrade isn't for awhile. I'm confident it will get s-off soon, but i'll enjoy my S-OFF Inc2 until this phone is S-OFF.
even though this phone is pretty nice i wouldn't pick it up down the road... it's a ghost town for forums and with no root and half the apps not utilizing the google intended extended menu there is a black bar a lot of the time using the app. If you want something small and locked down the Razr M smacks this around i think. I'm tempted to go to it just for the soft keys alone.
