AT&T users ..Why Not GoPhone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I asked this in the Note section as they have a different issue as ATT CAN see their devices as "smartphones" Many have spoken of GoPhone as an option for UL data and messaging.
We are off contract with two i9100s on $15 MediaNet sharing 700 minutes with NO messaging plan. We are paying $100 a month.
Seems to me we can transfer to a GoPhone plan for $50 with unlimited everything using any device (except maybe the iPhone) Why not use that advantage especially since LTE is not widely available and some may not really need the extra speeds.
What am I missing? We already get 3G+ (H) data speeds using the wap.cingular apn provisioned for MediaNet using our actual i9100 IMEIs

Does gophone sim work on your sgs2? A month ago i tried putting gosim to my sgs2 unkocked but didn't work. Dunno why.

The gophone plan suffers from a download speed cap, compared to just being on the medianet plan.

Really? Didn't know that because they are selling the Captivate on the GoPhone plan.

No I am not on that plan I am doing some research into possibly switching to it though. I am reading conflicting information on download speeds. Guess I should just call ATT.
EDIT called ATT. Claimed Speeds were the same as what we were getting now on MediaNet But Data would cost the same for a smart phone as a regular plan. So technically one could do the same as we are doing ow on the regular plan. give them the IMEI of the phone we are using and it will show up as a Dumbphone and get $50 Unlimited everything using the MediaNet APN
ATT has our SGS i9100 IMEIs If they did a sweep they would see them anyway. So I gave them the real ones. I have been on mine since last July. I may switch over to Gophone. Probably only need to call them and say switch us. The Additional benefit would be messaging which we do not currently have and unlimited calling.
We are paying $100 now without messaging and 700 minutes.

Iphone 2G data Plan on Galaxy s2

Hi,
I tried the iphone 2G trick to get Unlimited data (2G).
I get it, and put back the sim in my SGS2.
And it still get the speed of HSPA
Weird
is it safer now to move to Personal Smartphone dataplan (30 vs 20)
What's the iPhone 2G trick? It'd still be HSDPA speeds as that's what the SIM allows. The phone is restricted to to 2G and the carried will be able to see what speeds you're getting and move you to a limited package if you're not careful.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Att can call it whatever they want. But for unlocked devices you get unlimited data 2g/3g/H/H+ on your device depending on your carrier and whats available in your area.
I could have got the unlimited non-smartphone plan but I stuck with the 2g iphone plan just incase I ever get an att device I will still have grandfathered unlimited data.
To be on safe side incase you ever use your att upgrade, switch to the grandfathered unlimited 30 plan.
I can't tell from his post but he may be on AT&T in the U.S. They have a dumb-phone unlimited data plan that you can use on a smartphone as long as they don't have the phone's IMEI in their database. A lot of us in the U.S. are using it with the SGS2 and getting HSPA+ speeds for $20 a month including unlimited MMS. Helps offset the ridiculous prices we've paid for the phone.
To future proof your data plan, I would say ge the $30 data plan or stay on the unlimited 2g iphone plan.
There is no point of the iphone 2g trick, if you switch to dumbphone plan.
Sorry, yes i am in us with ATT
Ok I see, so as long as the IMEI is not in ATT database, so i can use it.
If one day our cheer SGS2 has it IMEI in ATT, so my plan may be revoke in worst case or will be grandfather.
So if i want to futur proof at 100% it is better to go to the $30 smartphone plan (I still have my inspire)
Thx
There absolutely no chance att will have an unlocked version uk or anyother non att branded phone in there database.
The only few phones(and small %) were unlocked nexus one and dell streak imei were in att database.

Yup. I'm on it. Though it is probably throttled. The fastest speed I've gotten is around 6.5mbps, and I average around 3-4.

Using wap.cingular. My speed varies quite a bit. 1.6 isn't that bad.

EDIT: just ran again. got 1.885 down, .999 up. Last 4 results before that are:
4.1 down, 1.05 up
5.36 down, 1.05 up
2.37 down, 1.01 up
2.97 down, 1.13 up.
So, all over the place.
your right, it does vary quite a bit. i was able to get a few 4-5 pulls, then a few 3-4 pulls. So that is fine, still faster then what i am coming from at almost any given time.
Thank you.

AT&T starting $50 prepaid unlimited - Compatible with SGS II?

I don't know if anyone's seen this yet, but for all the US users currently on AT&T, they'll begin to offer a $50 prepaid unlimited plan on June 26th. It'll include unlimited minutes, data, and text (including international text).
I just wanted to get a discussion going to see if this will work with the Galaxy S II. It's marketed for GoPhone's (not sure what that means), and smartphone data will be extra, though a lot of us have already been successfully using the non-smartphone postpaid data plan on AT&T.
A link to Engadget, which also includes the AT&T press release:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/atandt-to-offer-50-unlimited-prepaid-plan-ready-to-gophone-jun
There is no unlmited data
Its priced from $5 for 10mb to $25 for 500
dumb/feature phone web access is included with the $50 plan according to the release. SGS2 is a dumb phone in the eyes of AT&T village idiots.

Perhaps there's a lack of clarity in the press release, but it seems as if unlimited data is also included (albeit not for smartphones, for which the $5 to $25 charge is applied).
However, it seems that "unlimited web" is included for "quick messaging phones."
Many of us have been successfully using cheaper non-smartphone unlimited data plans for our Galaxy S II's, since the IMEI is not registered in AT&T's system. Essentially, we've been able to access the dumbphone plans.
Just wondering if that might also be the case here with the new prepaid plan.

I would not know, this plan is not out yet I suggest you wait for first user reports.
IF this plan's feature phone unlimited web works the same way their normal 2- year commitment feature phone unlimited wen works, then the only downside I see is you won't be able to switch to "fake 4G" in the small number of cities that show differences in speed between "fake 4g" and "usually 3g but with access to 4g". There is a big thread about this in the QA section, just search for "APN WAP.CINGULAR"

If I remember correctly, the only way to access the "fake 4g" (HSPA+ with full network backhaul) is to be on a smartphone plan and to have them register your phone as one of their "4g" phones? I'm on the unlimited non-smartphone plan already, so there probably wouldn't be a difference?
Anyway, I'll recheck that thread to see if I'm mistaken... or if there have been some new developments.
If anyone checks if this works, please post. I am interested.

According to some, the smartphone plan for "4G" phones would give you uncapped "fake 4G" speed. The feature-phone unlimited 3G does give you "fake 4G" speeds and HSPA+ access but the speed is supposedly capped. I believe it all depends on WHERE you use the phone. Where I am, I was getting same HSPA+ speeds on my old 3G smartphone plan and on the current feature phone plan: max 6 Mbps down, 2 up, on a very good day, on 99% of other days I get about 3 down and 0.5 up. Since I can clearly see that I can't really achieve the max speeds the "speed-capped" plan allows, it made no sense to me to switch to the "fake 4G" service for 4G-labeled phones.

confirming, as I described above, I get the H+ icon on the phone and good speeds, here in New York City. I do suffer from hanging signal problems though (some people attribute it to "fast dormancy" setting, changing which does not help me personally)
I'm on the non-smartphone data plan and getting HSPA+ in my area.
In the several areas I've run speed tests (California Bay Area, Southern California, Denver), I've averaged about 3mbps up and 1mbps down. I've hit up to 5-6mbps down.
Of course, more speed is always a good thing, but these speeds are entirely satisfactory to me.
I'd definitely be interested in seeing if the prepaid plan offers the same data service.
Also, I'm assuming the $50 a month is an out the door flat rate that includes all taxes and fees?
Did you guys see the new Verizon tiered plans yet?

LOL Why would they do that now? You would probably activate your dumpphone on prepaid account and then just switch sim cards.
Did anyone end up getting the $50 featurephone plan? Did you swap a smartphone onto it? Most importantly, I would like to know what kind of data speeds are you getting on the prepaid featurephone plan?
I read reports that ATT caps prepaid featurephone data to 0.2 Mbps or lower (EDGE speeds). Can anyone post a speed test using this plan?

[Q] AT&T GoPhone SIM card data speeds too low?

I'll be spending some time in the US and got the $50 AT&T unlimited GoPhone plan. Everything looks fine except my data speeds are too low. I get 500 kbps, while the signal says H+. (Btw I had to call them to put my IMEI in their database so that the data is enabled). In Serbia I'd get 4-5 Mbps with H+, sometimes higher. What's the deal?
I found the same thing with the Rogers/Fido network in Vancouver. Galaxy S II only gets 3 Mbps where as on the Bell network it had over 8 Mbps.
If you don't have an agreement with AT&T are there any other networks you can try that may offer better speeds in your area?

The Goplan has a data speed cap, that's why it's so cheap.
I wouldn't call $50 a month cheap... but anyway, is there any way around it?

You'd have to switch to a post paid plan instead of prepaid.
Except there's a 2 year contract requirement and I'm only going to be here by the end of december.
If you read the fine print the $50 unlimited is only for non-smart phones. The sgii will not work, you will have to add a data plan to use the internet. I'm kind if in the same boat (I'm on a gophone plan), I can no longer send mms without enabling data. They ran a sweep and found out which phone I was using. The sgii is not supported on the network, or so I was told because it is a 4g phone. So I'm back to the inspire.

4G connection

Hi everyone,
I just got the phone from the shipment yesterday and I just swap the sim card that I'm using and it work out of the blue. But today I got a msg from AT&T that I need the correct data plan in order for the 4G to work???
So here's the story, the plan I'm currently using is iPhone unlimited data plan back in 2009 then I get the Captivate, keeping the same data plan and internet still works normally. Now come the galaxy s ii with the so-called 4G speed I noticed I still get the same speed as the Captivate? The only different is on the Captivate it shows H but on the galaxy s ii it shows H+.
Is it supposed to say 4G or something on the indicator? or H+ is the 4G that AT&T is blowing up about?
Supposedly there's a new unlimited data plan you should be able to be put on. Look at the threads of people using iPhone 2gs to get unlimited.

Interesting. I can't say for certain but I do know there's only supposed to be 1 HSDPA Unlimited plan for Smartphones. If you go into your account online and go to Manage Features > View All Included Features - do you see SMT Personal $30? If you do, and you saw the code you listed on your actual current data usage screen, I'm pretty sure you're good. Obviously I'd call just to make sure...

To make it simple, call ATT or go into a store and have them update your IMEI so it will also update the correct plan for you.
There's no difference in price, just a different SOC code in the system. So yes, you keep your unlimited data!
If you go into a store, they *should* be able to change your sim free of charge. It doesn't really make anything better, but it doesn't hurt to keep everything updated.

So basically if you live in NorCal, you don't need to go through all the hassle to change the current data plan.

[Q] GS2 (i9100) on AT&T: Preserving unlimited smartphone data?

I'm grandfathered into smartphone unlimited data on AT&T and thinking about getting an i9100. Will I just be able to move my sim card from my current Android phone into the i9100, and everything will continue as normal?
Or, because the i9100 is not recognized by AT&T, do I need to call AT&T before I move my sim card to the new phone? In other words, will AT&T's system recognize the i9100 as a "dumbphone" and automatically switch me to the dumbphone data plan? Or by default will AT&T assuming I am still using a smartphone and leave my unlimited smartphone data plan in place?
I realize that I could use the dumbphone unlimited data plan and save some money, but I do not want to do that because in the future I might switch back to an AT&T branded device, and I do not want to lose my unlimited smartphone data plan if/when I do that.
Thanks.
Yes, you can just swap in your old SIM Card and your done. At&t's system cannot detect your SGS2 so all they see is your previous phone.

I was told by an AT&T rep that the iPhone communicates with Apple servers and you should call them up and have them switch you to a standard unlimited data package. I did that with my i9100, so far so good.
AT&T seems to be pretty good at allowing us to keep the unlimited data plans no matter what phone you use.
HSPA+ devices don't perform well unless using the "phone" APN, which requres a "4G" plan - AT&T has begun throttling the old wap.cingular APN.
HOWEVER: If you're on a smartphone unlimited plan, you can get grandfathered into an unlimited "4G" HSPA+ plan.
I STRONGLY suggest trying to do so in an AT&T corporate-owned store - avoid "mall kiosk" style places like the plague, and same for their telephone call centers.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Thanks for all the replies. I'm actually coming over from another "4G" HSPA+ Android phone, so I am already on the "4G" plan. So I guess I should be good on AT&T's end... I'll just need to make sure the APN is correctly set up.
If you're already on the 4G unlimited plan (soc code HSDPPB) that should be sufficient to work with the Phone APN. If you're on the 3G plan (soc code DPPB), you may have problems connecting to the Phone APN, but should be OK with the wap.cingular APN.
If you need to upgrade to the 4G plan, you should be able to do it at a corporate-owned AT&T store, as Entropy512 suggests. That's what I did about 6 weeks ago, and had no problems.
