I've noticed this folder on my internal SD and it contains .txt files of emails I've read and pictures I've downloaded and taken. Any idea where it came from? Just went through and deleted a ton of apps I wasn't using and noticed this today.
[EDIT] I'll add that I did a search of the entire card and the only thing with 'Encore' in the title is Shazam Encore but that was installed a couple months back whereas this directory was created a week and a half ago. I'm probably just being overly worried but I hate seeing rogue stuff like this in a random folder that I'm not sure how they got there.

I noticed the same thing when i was about to reset my phone. I am not sure where it came from i just know after a reset and reinstall of all my files it has not popped back up. I did think i had a virus on my phone and i am not sure if that is what did it. Scans came back clean but it kept redirecting me when i would go on the web.
I have a S3 and I wanted to know the same thing. Maybe its the ATT messages folder keeping backups. Anyone find out?

I am using a Galaxy device too and the 'Encore' folder on the internal sd card was using over 6gb of storage. In addition to your device I have read of many devices including the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note II, and Galaxy S3 having this issue. It appears to be created by the AT&T messaging app. Deleting only the folder leads to it being recreated upon restart, however disabling the AT&T messaging app then restarting the folder did not recreate and the device is running much faster.
It is interesting to see that you noticed this issue January 2012 and now a year and a half later users are having the same issue on a phone two generations later...

Just noticed my available space on my internal sdcard is sitting at around 2 gigs. This makes no sense. I dont have any music on it and I have gone through and deleted old pics and videos. I have also deleted old nandroid backups as well as files that i used to flash like roms and fixes.
Any ideas on whats causing this. I am running Kirf custom with voodoo enabled.
Are you sure that, that's your internal sd card and not the external sd card that you are reading off of? If you do have an external sd card please remove it, then reboot your phone, then check your memory once again without the external sd card inserted. Doing so should eliminate any confusion/confusions of you reading the wrong information.

Im looking at the right one. It says phone storage Total space:12.78 available space:1.90. With the apps I usually have installed I remember having at least 7 gigs free. This makes no sense to me.

Do you have a lot of ROMs stored on it?? a lot of game data?
these two things tend to chew up a looot of memory
I did delete all my stored roms. I do have need for speed shift installed I know it installed 150mbs when it first started up but maybe its the game save data then. I just would have thought the videos I was recording would have taken up alot more space than they did.

Just mount your sd to your PC and arrange all files/folders according to size, then browse around and you should find out whats eating your space up
I had a similar problem earlier on, it turns out that one of my database files had some how gotten corrupted and bloated to taking up a lot more space than they should have. I would check the size of your database files to make sure this hasn't happened to you.
So I figured it out. Set file manager to show hidden files. There was a folder called. trashes. Went into the folder and there was everything I ever deleted. Hit select all and delete and I am now back at 12 gigs of space. That folder had 10 gigs of trash in it! I recommendations to every one look into doing this if you are low on space.

You must have a mac, adamboyd. Am I right?
This has to do with the way macs "send" files to the trash can, which is different than a PC's recycle bin. A mac does not move the file from where it was located when you send it to the trash can, it simply places it in a hidden "trashes" folder. This isn't an issue when the files are on your computer, but when you're using your mac to delete files on an external drive (flash drives, or your phone's sd), the file remains on the drive in the hidden folder your mac created and eventually you run into the problem you experienced.
Solution: Always empty the Trash Can before ejecting the drive from your mac. That action searches out and permanently deletes all files located in the hidden trashes folders. If you empty the trash can after you've ejected the phone's sd from the computer, then obviously it won't be able to locate and delete the files that you had "moved" to the trash.
Hope that helps!
Good to know. And yeah I have a mac. I never knew that but I do now.

Also, if you make ClockWorkMod nandroid backups, they can add up fast as well. If you're low on space then you might want to move the older ones elsewhere or delete them from the phone.

ah yes, i forgot about this..these can take up almost 1gb each
Hi all,
I've been using my Galaxy S2 for a few weeks, and finally decided my 16gb SD card was not quite big enough. I bought a 32gb card and used my PC to transfer everything from the small card to the large one. Then, I placed the new card in my phone and booted up.
Everything seemed ok, but then I noticed that I now have two of every media folder in my gallery app.
My first thought was that the folders and pictures must have gotten deplicated in the transfer process, but I checked with root explorer, and there is only one of each folder on the card.
Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
Thanks,
-Matt

Hey Matt
I think the reason your seeing duplicates of everything is because with android they store everything on the pre-installed sd card you can try to delete the old ones but make sure you make a backup before you do anything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
don't delete anything.
Go to the media storage application under manage applications (in settings) and clear the cache for that app. You may need to reboot. then check the gallery to see if the duplicates are still there.
This happened to me a while back.
That was one of the first things I tried, but the clear cache button is greyed out. Should I try clearing the data from that app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
yes, clear data. that should work. that's actually what i meant before.
Hope it works.
Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum as it could be either a problem with the phone itself or with the SD card.
Sometimes when I reboot my phone about 50mb-2gb of music disappears from my external MicroSD card (class 10 SanDisk). As far as I can tell its always entire folders that disappear, never individual files. It happens quite frequently (probably 1 in 3 reboots) and its extremely frustrating.
I removed the card from my phone and put it in my PC to perform a disk check (no errors found) and format it but the problem persisted.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this and how to fix it?
You mean the files really gone, not even visible with PC?

Yep, the files get completely deleted, I can't even see them when viewing the contents of the card on my PC.
Suggestion: If you have another sd card, try testing it. Then you will know whether is the card problem or the phone problem.

Okay so I tried testing the issue with an old 16gb class 2 Sandisk I had laying around (the one I'm currently having the issue with is 64gb). I rebooted the phone about six or seven times but I wasn't able to replcate the problem. The thing is I can't seem to trigger the problem again on my 64gb card even after rebooting about 10 times. So I'm geussing there's somrthing elese I've be doing in addition to rebooting the phone that has been causing the files to delete themselves. Any idea what that might be?
I guess all I can do now is just continue to use the phone normally, keep a close eye on what I'm doing and wait for the problem to arise again.
In the meantime here are few additional details:
The card is about 30gb full but its only ever about 2gb or less that go missing.
I was wrong about individual files being immune from deletion. about 90% of the songs in my GTA Vice City soundtrack disappeared (among other things). The weird thing is, is that when individual files are effected, they don't outright disappear from the card like folders do. The files are there but they're like ghost files or something, they just sort of get reduced dramatically in size and refuse to work. Its like what you'd have if you downloaded an album through a torrent but stopped the download around 10%, the files are visible, just incomplete.
While many things seem to disappear randomly, there also a bit a pattern. For example, my Elvis Costello, Elvis Presley and Rolling Stones folders all disappeared at once like three times in a row(maybe every time, I'm not quite sure). Not sure what's going on with that.
Don't know what is going on with your sd card. Anyway, glad that the problem somehow gone. Enjoy your phone and keep monitoring the sd card.

ARGHHH! It just happened again, all but one of the files in a folder somehow to reduced to 0.00kb. I'm just taking a wild guess here, could this have something to do with editing id3 tags in n7player? I think that's something most of the files have in common...
Could be. Try uninstall it or any apps you think may be related.

I tested this theory by editing various tags in n7player, rebooting, checking the available space on the SD card and repeating the process several times. Files disappeared about 3 in every 5 reboots so I think its safe to conclude that n7player was causing the problem. I didn't want to stop using n7player completely as it is by far my favorite music app, so now when I need to edit tags directly from phone I use ID3Fixer (but I mainly stick to editing files on my PC prior to transferring them just to be on the safe side). After a few days of normal usage, no files have disappeared.
Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I've been going between 2 ROMs recently (Tron 2.1 and PAC-Man 23.0). For both of them, it is showing that the "Media" app is using a larger percentage of my battery (around 18%). I'm just not sure what this app is, or how to disable or remove it.
When I click on the app from the Battery details, "Force Stop" and "Report" are disabled buttons. Down below, it shows the included packages being "Downloads", "Media Storage", "Download Manager", "DRM Protected Content". I haven't been downloading anything, nor adding songs or movies, so I'm not sure what this "app" is spending its cycles doing.
Thanks!
I guess that it would be a better idea to report this incident to the ROM developer..
I have the same problem sometimes. After a google search I found that basically, your phone is searching for all the media on your internal and external storage. What causes the wake lock is that it is searching for or has found a file that is corrupt. It basically gets stuck on that file for awhile.
I had the wake lock for a couple days then it just went away.

That is really interesting! Using a previous ROM, I do have a few corrupted images from a camera-app-gone-haywire. I'll have to clean those out (which I should have done anyway), and see if that helps.
Great idea!
No problem! I should go through and clean my SD card out, but I am too lazy and don't have the time to spend on it. I just deal with it because I usually have a charger nearby most of the time.

Check to make sure the .thumbnails folder in the DCIM folder isnt overloaded with 2GB of images. Dont use the stock camera app regardless what ROM you are on. It accesses the stock Gallery app which in turns eventually creates thousands and thousands of "thumbnail" images. More like small pics at about 400x300 resolution. It JAMS up android.process.media .. hell.. it would make my phone hot because sometimes it ran straight for 24 minutes killing cpu.. deleted all the files in there and stopped using the stock app, no more problem.

So what do we do when we have been using the stock gallery and camera app? Can I delete the .thumbnails folder? What kind of camera and gallery app do you recommend? I have both stock samsung and stock android camera that I use everyday...
I have been using my phone (unrooted stock) for quite some time now and only recently did the media act up on me and killing the battery. I have rooted and install custom rom and reformatted my sdcard.
It'll now i kinda check the battery more frequently.

Just following up (I asked the original question). What I've found is that between various ROMs, I have two images folders on my sdcard. Mostly, I just went through and deleted a few invalid images (I think my Tron 2.0 ROM used to take corrupt images, but no longer). I cleaned out many many images I no longer needed as well.
Also, not sure if this is related: I uninstalled and reinstalled Google+ (which has an image auto-backup feature). I had been restoring it from a backup, and I think it got corrupted along the way. It was no longer automatically backing up images, for example.
Since then, I've been in much better shape, and I haven't noticed the Media process taking as much battery.
Hello all I rooted again recently after getting the 3 XX update from verizon.
and now that im rooted I cant get gallery to see any images in any folder except what is now taken with camera app.
any ideas.
restarted phone, cleared cache, restarted app, shut down phone and turned back on, tried different camera apps, different gallery apps....... all with same result that it will not see any of my pictures or videos I took before rooting or see any images in any other folder.
so im lost as to what to do to fix it.
Rom is OTA plus rooted is all.... nothing else was changed.
Im still a newbie but I know enough and i cant figure it out.
cheers all.
If I remember correctly, the files are stored in a different place in 4.2,2 then in 4.1.2. Do some searching to find the folder, and move your pictures there

ive tried moving folders and files..... but the issue is that the pics i have are in the same folder as the 1 pic i took once rooted..... so they are in the same folder. its like the gallery wont see anything else but what is taken from the camera now.
just stuck as to why its doing that..... had pics be seen in other folders before. i even have another folder on the root of the phone, well emulated sd card.... called Pics and it does not see those either.
noticed though that the camera does see the pics i took before but when i open the gallery to view those pics they are not there.
even booted into hboot and bootloader then restarted and still nothing.
oh and also i was already on 4.22 stock from verizon..... had some pics and a vid i took.... then rooted and now can't see pics and vid i took before I rooted.
found an answer i think
Ok think i figure out the issue.
the pictures i had on my device were not in a folder that the gallery app recognizes by default, so it was a naming issue and location issue. I moved the old pics taken with my camera before rooting to the folder labeled "Camera" and now the gallery an see all my images.
Before pics were in the folder named Camera....and now they are in a folder named 100MEDIA... very strange but happy it all ok now.
hope my issue helps someone sort out a problem if they ever have that issue like i did.
cheers all
