HTC Amaze Camera App? - HTC Amaze 4G

I've been very impressed with the camera on my HTC Amaze (Wind). However, I've been wondering why we don't seem to have the same camera app that's shown in all the reviews around the web. That nifty looking camera app with a ton of features is not present on my phone. Instead it seems to have the old HTC camera app (I think). I was wondering why this is? Did T-Mobile make some sort of deal with HTC that made the app exclusive to their phones or something? If so, is there a way I can get that app on my HTC amaze without rooting?
Thanks!

Hmm.. Yeah. I haven't noticed it until I saw your post but...
The Canadian version of the camera app is different.
I just flashed to Bulletproof, so I don't exactly remember... but I actually think some of the settings are different.
You can watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDLsOw34SUA around the 3:00 minute mark to see what our stock camera looked like.
Now if it was actually a newer/older version or not, I don't know.

ya that's the old camera software, I don't know why you still have that...have you updated the software on your phone to the latest? if not flash a custom rom!!! bulletproof I hear is a good one!

I believe I am up to date. I kind of want to avoid rooting my phone this time around (at least until HTC drops it). I found rooting and ROMing to be a time waster, annoying, and to ultimately provide me little benefit (often actually made things worse) on my old phone (Milestone XT720), so I'm trying to avoid rooting atm (might be different experience on this phone, but still)... Anyway to get that camera app without rooting?

I am not sure, you should ask someone more experienced like a developer. you can also call HTC and tell them about this issue!!

You would need to replace the stock app in the system directory and I'm pretty sure you can't do that without root. Having said that, I'm pretty sure you can install another camera app and use that instead...if you really want, try downloading one of the custom roms and pulling the Camera.apk out and installing it.

[Q] Pulling Stock HTC Apps Off T-Bolt & Putting Them on a Rooted Droid Charge

I have some questions that might sound stupid, but I just rooted my first 2 phones over the last 2 days, so I'm definitely new at this and still don't know a lot about this.
I have a defective Thunderbolt (VERY frequent reboots caused by the May OTA update) that I got Verizon to replace with a Droid Charge. I rooted the Thunderbolt because I wanted to be able to do things with my phone that the manufacturers prevent you from otherwise doing (such as changing the font, installing new ROMs, etc). I need to send the Thunderbolt back to Verizon, but I still have it and figured this would be a good time to experiment with rooting.
Anyway, what I want to know is if there's a way to pull the HTC dialer, calendar, contacts & e-mail apps off of the Thunderbolt and put them on the Charge (and, have them actually work!), as I really like those apps. As I said, my Thunderbolt is rooted, and I found things on it like Calendar.apk, HtcContacts.apk, and HtcDialer.apk, but there are also other files with similar or related names. My Charge is rooted also, with a non-stock kernel (imnuts' PeanutButta Jelly Time) and a non-stock ROM (GummyCHARGED 1.8.5).
So, if anyone knows how to do this and could explain to me how to go about it, I'd REALLY appreciate it!
Thanks,
Dennis
You can try pulling some of the system apks from the system/app folder like the calender. Dialer might be a little more complicated, think that's something integrated in he framework or with sense . Know there are a lot of other installable dialer and keyboards out there so sure its possible

You can try to use titanium backup on your Thunderbolt to backup all user apps, system data, and system apps. Remove the Micro SD card. Insert your Micro SD card into the Droid Charge, and use Titanium backup to move certain apps that you would like to use. However, keep in mind that the stock HTC apps, may not work properly on a Droid Charge. ie, keyboard, tethering, etc. Hope this helps.
system apps are going to need the htc framework to run.

In fact any sense related programs will just force close with sense framework. And sense framework cannot be ported or moved. Sorry man. But look at the bright side, you have a brand new plastic phone with the worst UI the world has ever seen, but you did get swipe preinstalled. Nice.

He could get lucky and someone will make a port of sense for samsung phones like they did for touchwiz and non samsung phones. Until then, I'd say he's stuck.

No, maybe you should read my ENTIRE post before commenting! Actually I have a new plastic phone, but I do NOT have the worst UI the world has ever seen, since I rooted it and installed a custom ROM! GummyCHARGED 1.8.5 installs an interface that is the closest to a stock Android install that I've ever seen (Google branded phones excepted, as I've no experience with them). That Samsung TouchWiz interface is a MAJOR reason why I rooted the phone in the first place!
At least my new plastic phone doesn't reboot 8-10 times a day, including right in the middle of phone calls!

Here's an alternative, maybe post this in the Charge section of the forums, as I doubt very many people in the Thunderbolt section are fond of the Charge or would be able to help you mod it. Just saying.

Yeah, I only posted this here because it involved pulling apps off of the Thunderbolt, and I figured Thunderbolt owners would know the most about doing things like that!

All of that still doesn't change the fact you have samsung hardware not supported by the htc sense framework by default. You might have something close to AOSP and still using touchwiz (such as the stripped/themed roms on the thunderbolt) or you might just have an actual AOSP based rom. However, none of that changes the fact that the Sense framework supports sense hardware (which none of that samsung uses) and many of the drivers on the phones are not opensource and so that's what keeps from being as simple as pulling off some .apks on a sense ROM and installing onto your phone. As mentioned, you are far more likely to find someone who can build a sense like framework/launcher from the ground up in the samsung centered or general android development forums than here.
If we're going to resort to name calling and insults by either party, I'll just report the thread to a moderator, because none of that is really needed it's off topic. There's been too much hate going around lately on xda and it just turns off those that really try to help (like me).
If you want a lead of some party to ask, I would contact the developers that ported the touchwiz interface to all android phones or start asking in the older samsung forums that have more development going on (or in the general ones as mentioned). They would probably be the most interested in helping as I mentioned before. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/modified-touchwiz-4-launcher-for-all-android-devices/ (these guys)

I love my htc amaze 4g

Am I the Only person who got a Perfect Amaze with No defects?
I LOVE THIS FREAKIN" PHONE
Only thing, that pink TMO Goodbye animation on power down , its got to go, they could have made it blue, yeah, yeah I know - TMO likes pink, easy fix when Rooted & S-OFF
Come on people, some of the comments are something else, guess your previous phone was absolutely Perfect from first boot, there was not need to root or personalize them in anyway.
I went from a G2x to the Amaze. G2x was awesome, rooted with CM7 and it was exactly what I wanted in a phone, except for the fact that the camera in the G2x was awful and even with a custom rom, it would still lock up.
As soon as I root my Amaze and uninstall sense and the other bloatware preinstalled (seriously 31 apps preinstalled I have 0 use for) this device will be near 100% perfect for me.
My only fear is that the camera app is tied into sense and freezing that will mess that up, but we'll just have to see, unless someone who's already done it can attest.
Yes, I am really enjoying this phone. There's so many things I like about it. Especially those two little camera buttons. I have the white model and its absolutely gorgeous. I honestly have no reason to root right now. If you were to install a custom Rom you would lose a lot of features. The camera would have a lot less function without the built in Sense features.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
I am with you on that - this baby is something else, just needs a little de-bloat, though I cannot see any lag at all even with all the default SF
Only thing I have planned after root is some of my favorite apps for rooted phones
I did eventually get my MT4G running like a dream, the Amaze is like my MT4G on a double dose of Roids - right out the box
Perfect size phone & screen, I dislike Tablets, the Amaze is a great tweener.
Sent from My Virtuous MT4G - While conditioning Amaze battery - see if that battery memory thing does work
Are you confirming that the features for the camera are tied to sense or are you sepculating?
I have no intentions of going for a custom rom at this point, I just want to freeze sense and a bunch of other bloat. I was able to lag the phone significantly by installing launcher pro, but I think it was fighting sense the whole time.

I tried 3 different ones I have from my G2 and Nexus 1, on those phones, it works fine, on the Amaze, it gives me these errors:
Damaged SD Card
Removed SD card
It won't let me mount or format them through the phone. I formatted them through the computer fine but the phone won't read them. Brought it to the T-Mobile store they said they'll replace the phone.. so hopefully it's just my unit..

I'm familair with them and have used some of them, I just didn't know if they were linked to the actual SENSE app, or if it was built into it's own camera apk.
If they are linked, then I can live without them, but it would be nice to keep if I could. I'll just have to check for msyefl.
I'm happy so far but I may have a concern with the camera while using flash. On most pics I take with the flash, there is haze or a halo effect on the photo. It looks like a fog that is thinner at the center and thickens out near the edge. It seems to be worse when the subject is at close range, and it seems to vary in amount from pic to pic. Photos without the flash are fine.
I see nothing on the lens and there isn't anything around the lens/ led flash area. I'm going to stop into T-Mobile and check the demo unit for the same effect.
Otherwise happy. I really want to root for Titanium Backup though.

These T-Mo apps how much space do they really take up? Is it worth all the trouble with "unlocking bootloader" and rooting the phone for a noob like me?
I´m coming from a Desire wich has minimal internal memory to this Amaze with 16Gb (I know i´s not that much irl).
It´s just that I am so annoyed with all these apps I cant even use.
yes this phone is amazing, the onlly thing i dont like about sense is that my wallpapers dont move like all my other phones did, so i cant use all my old wallpapers. Other than that this phone is exactly what i expected it to be

Umm... May want to rephrase that... I use a custom rom that still uses sense as well and has all the camera features so... Custom rom does not equal loss of camera features or sense for that matter... Also I am pretty sure one could have a stripped sense rom and still maintain camera functionality...

I really loved my sensation and the amaze is what my sensation never was a phone without flaws. People complain bout the lights bleeding into the screen but I don't have that issue I like my screen looks great. The device feels awesome in my hand and the heft is perfect. The camera is best I ever had front and back. Most people will complain about sense but I like it until ics I dislike stock android its missing some Polish and ease with its features like dialer, contacts, camera, music player etc... Hate that I'm giving up my amaze and selling it hoping the galaxy s 2 is ok but hoping to pick up an amaze later again this really is a great device wish more devs picked it up to see its value and HTC was more friendly to our devs. Thank god for x!
Edit: what I absolutely hate about my amaze!! The fact that it looks and feels so good bare that I never want to use my case but have to so that it can stay looking so good.

A Sad Love story...

I used to be a crack addict... er a blackberry user.
The Bold 9000 was my pride, loved it to death, but it lacked a proper browsing experience and a proper camera with autofocus.
Switched over to the 9700 and still no proper camera and browsing experience.
Wind mobile released the Amaze 4g and I knew I had to have it. I was eyeing the sensation but paying $400-500 was turning me off, and the fact that I wouldn't have warranty as well.
Picked up the Amaze on Monday I believe.. HUGE upgrade from my 9700.
But the more I play with it... the more disappointed I'm getting. This is my first android phone, and I really hate the bloatware, and am kind of annoyed that my first experience with android wouldn't be a stock one so I could get to know the OS in and out before throwing in any theming/extra apps into the equation.
The bootloader is currently locked down with S-ON, which is surprising as hell because Telus unlocked its bootloader, and WIND advertises itself as being the transparent customer loving company that will do anything for its customers. And I know that there won't really be a way to get stock gingerbread without having bootloader unlocked soo...
I have 10 days to return the phone, and I need help making the decision. Return it and stick with my Bold 9700, and hope that it gets the Galaxy Nexus in the near future, or keep it and learn to love Sense.
You can unlock the bootloader from htc's site and one click root it. Bloatware is very easy to remove then and you don't have to switch roms. You can keep stock without the bloatware.

Nope doesn't work. Doesn't give an error code or reason though.
I use to have the sensation which was a very similar phone to the amaze I was looking for reason to keep the amaze too. reason's why I kept the phone were because it just works. Usually every android phone I've had I wanted to fix something by rooting it and changing roms but with this one I haven't it has great features camera, screen size, looks and build quality etc... I'm not saying root is not needed but I am saying I like this over stock android there are still plenty of options to customize but it picks up where stock Android lacks and that's better features and looks. Stock android right now is ugly unless its a galaxy nexus which not everything has been fixed or made to look better sense has lots of better apps n features like the dialer, looks nice and can dial contacts by spelling the name stock dialer cant, camera is nicer with more options, drop down has quick options to turn on different things quickly, n there's more. This is why I kept it and like it because the reason cm7 exist is so stock android can be customized and have some options in OEM phones with custom uis like touchwiz or sense etc. So thats my two cents stock Android is great but it no longer carries the huge speed improvement that so many people were after before with dual core phones so unless your getting the galaxy nexus the amaze is great phone to keep and hopefully HTC keeps there word and updates us to ics or a dev brings us ics in the future.

HTC widgets are cool, apploader is much nicer than touchwiz IMO, but it's the mass amount of HTC included apps that piss me off. That and random apps like flashlight that I'll never use.

Potential Buyer - some questions

I'm considering getting an Amaze 4G from Wind Canada this week and I just had a few questions:
Bootloader - I don't intend to root or install ROMs on it for quite some time (I've already done my fair share of rooting on my current phone). I do however, want the option to be able to root and install ROMs on the phone for whenever HTC abandons the Amaze 4G (hopefully not for a good while) and I want to update it myself. While a locked bootloader probably doesn't mean no custom ROMs, based on my experience with my current locked bootloader phone - it makes things harder.
I've seen reports that the Wind version has a locked bootloader. I've also seen mixed statements about the ability to unlock it. Is it or is it not possible?
General opinions - What has your experience been with the HTC Amaze 4g? Would you recommend it? Why and why not? I'd just like to be aware of any shortcomings this phone has as well as users general feeling about it and anything else I should know.
Thanks for the help!

It is possible to unlock the bootloader but it seems hit or miss with Telus and Wind users.
It's a solid built device with incredible specs. But it does have some minor flaws.
The screen bleed is my #1 pet peeve.
Issues with wifi and bluetooth have also been reported.
The battery is much better than any other device that I've encountered.
I can go about a full day with moderate use before having to charge my device.
Results may vary depending on individual conditions.
Camera is great quality, but audio for video camera sucks! It seems to have some kind of high pitch feedback or squeel to it. Hard to explain.
I don't care with the method to access the microsd card. You must remove the battery cover to remove it. Some phones don't require this. But not all phones have the antenna in the battery cover either. It's intimidating to me at least to be removing the battery cover over and over again just to remove/replace the sdcard. Maybe if I somehow mess up the antenna HTC will send me a new one?
That's all that I can think of. I like to think that I'm unbiased but actually I'm quite bitter toward HTC because of their reaction to the open source kernel that isn't fully open. They openly refused to release the wifi drivers and we can't easily update the kernel. So this so called "developer friendly" device is anything but. That being said... we probably won't be seeing much development for this device until HTC changes their attitude.
On WIND here and unlocked my bootloader yesterday it works fine.
not sure about BT, but probably the same cause as the wifi problems.
CASES cause the signal for wifi to drop significantly. I'm using a TPU case and wifi sucks balls. But once i remove it, BAM~! strong signals. I would like to add that my wifi signal on my amaze is stronger then the gs2 that i used for a couple days before giving it to my sister. However, gs2 connects faster like... 2 secs faster lol
I actually wrote a review on the Amaze and I included a video. I will post the link to it. If it is not allowed, mods please remove it.

If that's allowed, then it works with me. Thanks.
Sent From My HTC Amaze 4G via Someone's Room
I really like this phone, much better industrial design than the Samsung. I've rooted it and am using Crackeyes latest ROM which is very clean and stable, everything seems to work. Battery life is much better than my last phone (HD2) and I ponied up and got the Anker battery & charger which seems to last about 30-40% longer than the stock. I have noticed that certain apps will drain the battery very quickly, I put on a loan calc app and overnight it sucked the battery dry, about 40% worth.
My only beef is with the wifi calling feature & I'm not sure if this is phone or tmo related but there is lots of latency and artifacts when using this. You can tell the person on the other end is struggling to decipher what I'm saying, it's kind of like the old satellite phones where you talk and there is a half second delay so you end up talking over the other person.
Other than that it's got great ID, rock solid performance, a great camera, screen, no wifi issues that I can tell, it's all good.

I picked up the HTC Amaze 4G from Wind Mobile today, and I've got to say, coming from a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000, I was very impressed.
Back in my SGS, I was a custom ROM enthusiast and tried almost every ROM that XDA had to offer for that handset. I found myself using CM7 and MIUI the most on the SGS, so I was diving into this HTC Amaze 4G knowing that I wouldn't have the same selection of custom ROMs.
The bootloader at htcdev should work for Wind and Mobilicity now (pretty sure they recently updated). Within hours of bringing this phone home, I unlocked the bootloader, installed CWM, and flashed a bunch of ROMs and I must say, even though the selection is not as great as the SGS, the work being done here at XDA for the HTC Amaze 4G is spectacular.
This phone is very smooth. However, I found that my Samsung Galaxy S was able to achieve smoother scrolling through the homepages (it ran on MIUI and had scripts to optimize performance and RAM management) than the HTC Amaze 4G on stock Sense UI (probably due to all the widgets and the scrolling animation). Once I flashed the BeastROM with the AOSP look, everything was as smooth as butter right off the bat.
The build quality is unlike any other Android I've seen, and while it may weigh more than other phones in this tier (Samsung Galaxy S II for example), it feels like a very solid and premium product when you hold it in your hand - this means that it'll probably be less prone to drops, but when they do drop, expect dents and cracks. Also, one thing I love about this phone is the notification LED, which can be set to flash on certain alerts, etc.
While the screen may not be as vibrant and colourful as Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus, the Super LCD screen is still very beautiful and holds its own. The camera is one of the best I've seen on a mobile phone.
I've only had this device for about 5 hours (stock HTC) and a little less than that circling through the custom ROMs, but I can already assure you that this handset is no slouch. The screen bleed from the backlit soft buttons will annoy some users, but it's something that doesn't bother me much.
I picked up this handset from Wind Mobile for $99 on the $29 monthly plan with unlimited talk, text, and data, and it's awesome.
Can more of you guys confirm crappy voice quality while doing video, and the 'death grip' issue like on Sensation? I'm coming from sensation and wondering if it's worthwhile to switch; and Amaze seems to have the same problems. Camera would be amaze's best asset - would you say?
Just got this and am loving so far. One question - is it just me or does the Wind version not have the same camera app as the other versions (the T-mobile)? It looks like the old HTC camera app and I don't see any of those fancy settings that I've seen in video reviews for this. Quality is amazing though...

I haven't experienced the death grip issue on either the Sensation or the Amaze. The sound on video is almost like a feedback noise (at least that what it sounds like to me) However, I still have my Sensation and I love them both. I really love the build quality and weight of this phone and the camera takes such nice pictures. I couldn't be happier.
Definitely NOT being sent from my HTC Amaze4G until Christmas Day.....Okay it is
The amaze is an excellent build, the weight of it makes it feel solid, snappy quick, the camera is excellent, actually has replaced my digital, and has a beautiful screen . . . Coming from the hd2 this thing rock, had to replace one cause I borked the USB port but neither one has had the creak some have, and both have had screen bleed but it's so light it's barely noticeable.

Also in true HTC fashion they used different screens, my first had the same display as my second but didn't have gorilla glass and scratched real easy, my second has gorilla glass or something like it cause it's nearly impossible to scratch

I've used WiFi calling from my home WLAN since the device update and it's worked great. Have you tried on other WiFi networks? Also, mine is still unrooted with stock ROM (obviously), and I've heard that because HTC hasn't released the WiFi drivers there may be some WiFi issues with aftermarket ROMs. Have you tried with the stock ROM?
In every other sense though, I agree. This is a phenomenal piece of hardware, and I really like the camera (much of it I'm sure due to the camera app...lots of fun toys!). Unfortunately mine is on "loan" from T-Mobile, so I'm not ready to root or play with it yet. I can only imagine how amazingly this phone would run on something like CM9. *drool*
Since I don't have enough posts here yet, can't post a link, but I've reviewed the phone on mytwistedbrain_DOT_com if you're interested.

[Q] new to windows phone, can any tell me cool tricks or apps?

Hi, I switched to At&t and the Htc Titan yesterday due to messing my Sprint Evo3d up. I noticed that windows can not do nearly as much as my Android did. Maybe its just me but I knew a whole bunch of stuff that the evo 3d did, now i can't even Skype and text at the same time without being logged out (I Skype like 14 hours a day with my fiance when I'm gone) I'm debating on just fixing my evo because this phone seems to limited. Can anyone tell me anything cool about this phone? Or should i go back and get the Atrix? I do like the fact this has a pretty awesome keyboard and pretty big screen. And I'm like in the middle of knowing technology stuff (I know the basics and a bit more but am by far not a master, especially on windows lol.) I want to give this phone a chance but I'm disappointed with the market and having to watch like everything through Zune.

Well first of all, I am going to tell you only a few things here. Other Titan owners can give you the low down on some more things later.
Skype works differently on WP than on Android and iphone. Here is an article why...if you don't understand the article...I will explain it further.
http://www.wpcentral.com/understanding-skype’s-limitations-windows-phone
As for the Titan, personally I like it compared to my previous phones running Android and .. the iphone.
The user interface is much more smoother IMO than the latest and greatest Android phone plus I definitely think the iphone has a dull user interface going on there.
Apps are mostly what everyone complains about when they switch over to WP. However, there are many MANY apps that are third - party that will do the same exact thing as a well-known app on Android/Iphone. For example, (Pandora Radio (no official app on WP) however, we have MetroRadio/WPFandora/RadioControlled that will do the same exact thing. Words With Friends (lol, most people complain about this the most) ...we have Words By Post that will work on Android/Iphone/and WP)
OS Updates/Manufacture Updates-As you know, you are on the most horrid cell phone carrier on the planet when it comes to these. However, I do expect us to receive updates fairly shortly to the latest firmware/and operating system soon. I don't really know if we will get WP8 or not. I don't think Microsoft really knows just yet. -And I cannot give you an expected release date, as ATT does not have a release date yet. But if you wanted to you could push the latest OS yourself manually from your computer. (I am low on time, but if you wanted a link, I could post a link on where/how to do this later).
I will post more later...possibly...
I will disagree verizon was the worst i have used i have at&t and have no complaints

Yes, Zune is a bit limited; but the phone works great. I understand that if you had in-depth knowledge of Android you'd like to keep in it; but this OS works great with a lot less hardware; for example HTC one has four cores, to run ICS in a good way, WP are single core only, and they work very smoothly.
I think you should see the videos from one of the replies.
Regards!
