Help! Ray stock search engine is annoying me! - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Hi All
I've googled this issue ive been having countless times, but to no avail. The problem is the following:
Ive just gotten my new xperia ray. I use the stock browser because its fast and basic. I often use the address bar for googling as I used to with my X10(both gingerbread). With my X10 I used to get the results displayed in the mobile google webpage. With my Ray, it doesnt do that. It gives me google search results, but displayed with a "powered by google" heading, and very limited access to things like images etc.
This is extremely annoying because I now need to first go to the google website before and search there if I want my search results displayed properly with the option of switching to image results. Some idiot at the sony factory thought he was smart and added this usesless stock setting.
I assume I somehow need to specify the settings of my stock search engine. All I get in settings is yahoo, bing and google. Nothing more and no more settings. Obviously google is selected as the stock search.
I hope theres someone out there who can give me some advice. I fear that otherwise this is going to piss me off untill ICS.

There is a help thread

Just change 'View Google in' on the bottom of the search page. Should fix it.

Thanks for the reply, but I think you might be misunderstanding. I dont want to view it in desktop mode, I want to view it in the normal mobile mode not the mode where it substitutes the normal google links (like images, maps etc) for a "powered by google heading"
I want to be able to search for say "cat", get all the web search results for cat and then have the image link availible so that I cab look at images of cats if I want to.
Atm I have to either go to the google website first to get the same results. If I search straight into the address box, I get the silly "powered by google" result.

AFAIK, it is not happening with mine. I got some tabs at the top to search another type (like image) Maybe you can try to log in to your google account first from browser, and then when you do a searching, try to find setting link from that page. I haven't tried it but if i remember correctly, with google account attached to your browser you might get what you want for.

Search... does it ever work?

I always try to search before asking a question.
However, when ever I search on XDA I ALWAYS get irrelevant results. And sometimes, it can't find anything at all!
For instance: Right now there is a post "tv out cable" right here on the first page.. but if I do a search for "tv" it finds nothing. So I tried a search for "tv out cable".. remember there is a post right on the 1st page... it still says that there are not posts matching that criteria.
What is going on!?
I am perfectly capable, and willing to solve my own problems if I can. And I will search away until I find what I need. But how am I supposed to find what I need if the search function doesn't work worth a darn?
Thanks
try sticking AND ( in capital between your search words )
and select in thread titles only
searching " tv AND cable " in just the rhodium section brings up about 20 results including the one you mention at the top
hope that helps
It can be challenging to find what you are looking for and I applaud your efforts to solve your own issues first.
I was also frustrated when searching within XDA. Try using the search tool in my sig; click the blue letters. You can also try this one, http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=017695416373862181485:gvgyyqz72fk&hl=en
I like to do a google search like this:
TP2 TV Cable site:forum.xda-developers.com

i like using google cause i can switch between ppc geeks and other sites if xda doesn't show an answer. Not always the most up to date threads, but still very relevant information.
I find using Google the best option. Just type what you want to know with "xda" or "rhodium" added. The second works especially well since not all information on this phone is located on this web site
Use the built in forum search, not the google one. I find that it works much better.

I use google to but in the format of "site:xda-developters.com search keywords here" find it to yield somewhat better results then the built in search.

[Q] ICS and ICS + : not possible to fill "search" field

Hello to everybody,
I have a small strange thing.
When I use ICS (or ICS+) browser on the xda site and wanting to do a search, here is what happens :
- I touch the "search this forum" button
- it opens the field below
- I touch the "free text area " to start typing
- I see the keyboard sliding up, and then as quickly, it slides back down and the search box closes...
as a result, I can not perform any search on the XDa site.
It does not do that with Opera nor with dolphin.
PS :as a matter of fact, that was yesterday, because this morning, there is not even the "search" button only the "forum tools" one... but I believe it is related to a temporary site issue.
Anyway, has anyone experienced this? Where could it be coming from?
Same here, quite frustrating....
Same here with stock browser.
If you use the keyboard dock it works. But when use a onscreen keyboard you cant type in this sorts of popup text fields
WOW, thanks for bringing this up. I have had this problem for god knows how long. I first noticed it with my rooted HTCEVO. I seem to have this problem with just about all the forums. Now my prime also.
Is it an Android thing? Did it work for you guys with a different browser? Weird, I havent been able to use the function for so long I havent even looked for the search, and now I too see that it is gone. Is it a Vbulletin vs Android thing?
Would love to know the problem/solution.
thanks.....
EDIT: I have a dock, but never tried the search function with it. Now I guess we cant, I dont see the ability to "search this forum". What happened?
Anyway, there seems to be something going on with the search function on the forum now...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528883
edit 05/03/12 : search function is now back on the forum. I'll try again the ICS issue, see if it is still there...
Search function is still not working for me on browser+. However, I know it's not ideal for a quick search, but if it's any consolation the advance search field works.
Kind Regards,

+1 for the "advanced search" option... bothered me at first but, one more click isn't all that bad...

Google Auto Complete doesnt 'complete'

Hey guys, did a quick Google search on this and didnt see any answers to this bizarre quirk.
I am on non-rooted ICS (stock) - no comments from the peanut gallery about this. Once CM is stable enough that I feel I can use it, Ill switch.
Now, on to the problem.
I installed Chrome and set it to the default browser (but Ill probably change it considering what Im about to post) and set the home page to google.
I begin typing a search query, for example, 'Samsung AT&T No' and Google presents some suggestions of what it thinks Im going to actually search for. Tapping ANY of these suggestions hides the suggestion list and does NOT fill in my query with the suggestion I tapped. In addition, the keyboard is also hidden until I tap in the query edit field again.
In addition, Id like to just state for the record, xda is TERRIBLE on mobile (the website). I dont know what this new 'theme' is but it is barely functional on mobile, on the desktop, the website is completely broken in Firefox (14.0.1 w/ No Script and Tree Style Tabs plugins installed - and yes, I am enabling scripting for XDA).
So, I have reverted to the old xda theme until this is fixed.
BUT, does anyone know what is wrong with Chrome?
Is Chrome out of beta?
if you click the arrow next to the auto complete search query it will fill it in for you.

Yeah I was having this same issue. I am rooted and using the stock browser, same goes for the google search widget. But the answer above solves the problem.

[Q] Change Google Seach measurements from Imperial to Metric

Hi there,
I recently installed JellyBam into my i9100. I have the standard Trebuchet installed with the Google Search bar widget.
When I type in Amsterdam weather, the weather is nicely displayed but the values are in Imperial.
How does one change it into Metric?
( It would be interesting to query the value of product.locale.region, but I don't know how)
( Please note I do not wish to install a new app for this. I simply want to know how to change the existing Google Search app. There are no options in the Settings menu).
Cheers, F.
There is a small "C" next to the temp displayed in Fahrenheit. Tap that, and it will change to Celsius. All future results will then be in metric.

Do the search at www.google.com via the browser, then try doing what I said. Then repeat your search using the search widget. The preference should carry over.

Nope. A search on Google.com gives it in Metric. The change is not carried through. It is specific to Google Search widget/app in Android.

That's totally weird. My results always get displayed in a browser window. Your results appear to be something else.
Check in the ROM thread?
EDIT to add: it's probably different for me since I'm on stock ICS, and you're running the JellyBam custom ROM, so this is about as far as I can go trying to help you, I think. Sorry.
OK. Shall try there. Cheers for the suggestions.
Did you check in Settings->Google Now->Weather->Weather Units?
Btw. which Jellybam Version are you using? The one based on 4.1.2 or the one based on 4.2.1?
V 4.2.1
Thee is no Google Now settings section .
Enter your search term; once the result is shown hit the left touch key and there should be a settings entry (at least it's like that in the 4.1.2 version).
Yes there is a settings entry, but nothing there adresses measurments.
Screenshot of Settings in Google Search widget
Well it looks like that for me.
You do have a google-account, right?

No. Can you offer proof that a Google Account is required?
If no Google account was configured then one would think it would base results on GeoIP or the handset locale, which is the Netherlands and UK English, which would always prefer Metric.
My wife's i9100 does not have a Google Account, and it gives the results in Metric. However she has stock Samsung/ADW.
Actually no, I don't have proof. It was just a guess.
Maybe it's a bug in the 4.2.1 Jellybam (or CM) version.
Edit:
I just found another thread on xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827768
You have to activate Google Now to be able to change these settings. But I guess you can't activate Google Now without a Google-Account (still guessing, sorry).

Strange URLs from Playstore-Apps

Maybe this is a stupid question and I apologize in advance.
But maybe someone can direct me in the right direction.
I want to register an account with my weshare (car-sharing) app.
They authenticate via email which includes a link to the URL "umi-weshare://authorize?blabaasdas" which my browser opens (lineage 18.1 with google-apps).
Of course this fails due to "unknown url scheme" etc.
How does a stock Android handle this link? Turn it over to the right app? But how?
And if so, does a stock Android capture _every_ link I klick on?
How does this work? (normally)

Hmh, this is really strange.
The support says it works on iphone and "normal" Android. (The whole Volkswagen login thing is based on this. So I really believe it works "normally") But I am also sure it does not work on _my_ lineage.... As expected my browser (any browser) opens with an error...
And this is as it should work, I think. But how does it work on all the other phones
(the support also says it _only_ works on smartphones. So there is something happening I don't understand. Something like the OS scanning the URL and passing it to the right app.)

the link doesn't work "as it is" according to the weshare-support.
It magically only works on the phone.... ( it is supposed to work there, the support tells me. )
Ahhh, after one week chatting with the support this diskussion with you gave the right hint!
As you confirmed that the OS does not interfere I had the idea that therefore somehow the browser might pass the token back to the OS somehow..... (I am not a developer)
So I installed chrome on the smartphone and "alas" it works!!!
(chrome on the PC gives xda-open... error which is a hint as well.)
So I _have_ to use Chrome :-(
I already came across the next "bug". The street I live in exists twice in this city but the app only lets me choose the first "hit". So my postal number will be wrong! WTF....
As far as I know, this specially formatted URL like "umi-weshare://authorize?blabaasdas" is called an app link or a deep link.
There are many similar deep links.
For example, some URLs as below:
market://details?id=xadave.SmartUnitConverterFree_Google
amzn://apps/android?asin=B00Q3V4VNC
......
If you enter the second deep link above in the address bar of your mobile browser, it will open up the Amazon Appstore app on your mobile device and directly link to the detail page for a specific app which is available on the Amazon Appstore.
And the first app link will open up the Google Play Store app on your Android devices and directly link to some app in the Play Store.
So, I think your app link, "umi-weshare://authorize?blabaasdas", will link into your weshare app, too.
Android App Links are a special type of deep link that allow your website URLs to immediately open the corresponding content in your Android app (without requiring the user to select the app).
