Hey guys,
I bought this Lumia 800 a month ago after an HTC Mozart. And i absolutly love it i really do. The design is gorgeous and WP7 seems to be made for this phone. The camera is alot better than the Mozart.
But here is the thing i have some complaints about the phone:
-The screen i just beautiful when you start reading something on it. The PenTil display make every single pixel visible... And the white are the worse i've seen on a phone. So i think the Mozart screen still had some goodness on its side. But on the Nokia the CBD is just amazing...
-[This issue i maybe due to a hardware problem on mine] The camera button is a 2 stage button like every WP handset but on this one 90% of the time i can't feel the second stage... If i press a little to much the phone takes a picture. The Mozart's button was alot better.
About the power button, the jack being near the usb port etc... I got used to it so i won't complaint about them whether you like them or not it's your choice.
But these are not the issues which push me to creates this topic. I bought this phone thinking that i bought a second gen WP but the Nokia Lumia 800:
-Doesn't have FFC
I knew this before i bought the phone but i learned MS is about to release a Skype app... So Nokia knew about this when they lunched the phone...
Hell no one really uses the FFC so it's not really that big of a problem.
-The lack of gyroscope. I knew about this too but i believed that API which try to replace it with the accelerometer and the compass was well implemented by Nokia.
And that i wouldn't see Augmented reality app appear for WP before 6month a year. But they did Wikitude is out for WP and i absolutly love this app. With the NL800 it's unusable... I tougth Nokia couldn't predict these app wouldn't come so soon on the WP platform neither did I.
Surprise! Nokia publishes a video with their future Augmented Reality app. Few hours after they unveiled the Lumia 900.
-Here is the primary source of my anger and the reason i sold my Mozart it didn't had the Internet Connection Sharing and wasn't getting it because of Orange branding (BTW I'm on WP because i'm fed up with Custom Rom). I believed Nokia when they told users ICS would come really soon.
The fact is i'm still waiting and exept one Topic on XDA no one talks about the interface getting a few centimer on the right...
Here is is the conclusion: I got a Lumia 800 "The first real Windows Phone" but in the end, the only real 2nd Gen spec i got was the one i didn't needed: A faster proc.
My point is not to say this phone sucks or Nokia used us as test but, even they did i really do love it i works perfectly, it's fast and smooth. And the battery last as long as the Mozart.
I just want to know what you guys think about this. I really do love the phone and i'm not trolling i'm trying to understand. Because the new HTC and Samsung phones have the new hardware and ICS...
I apologize for my english to all of you.

Not sure what you want people to say. The phone isn't perfect, of course. Neither is the operating system. But we didn't buy the Lumia 800 thinking that it was. You can't complain about non-existing specs if they were never advertised. You bought the phone knowing that it doesn't have a FFC or a gyroscope, or ICS. I wonder if the 800 was a rushed job of just porting WP7 to the N9.
I do agree that the camera button kinda sucks though. Too flimsy.
I compared the screen on Lumia with Samsung Omnia 7 and the Nokias whites looked much whiter.
I've read that the camera button on the 800 does not have a second click by design. It is a soft 'click' as you describe.
The reasoning for this is because the second 'click' causes your hand to shake and thus the camera to shake blurring the image.
I wish i could find the article on this...

As for ICS...
"However, it doesn’t have the benefit of a year’s worth of bugfixes and thus there are times when the software is actually less stable than Honeycomb. A lot of apps have unusually long startup times and render slowly or freeze up on the screen, even if you force the GPU to render 2D operations in the “Developer Options” menu.
And then there’s the dreaded “This App is not responding” dialog which gives you the option to wait or force close the app. But sometimes you’re not so lucky and you need to shut down the OS and re-start to get a stable environment again."

Where you in such a hurry to spread FUD about android ICS that you didn't see the first poster was talking about Internet Connection Sharing?

I agree with you but then why Nokia didn't do a great job about replacing Gyroscope? The FFC i don't really need it... But for the Gyroscope if they were thinking that it's not something that our phone needs then why create an Augmented reality app?
For ICS Nokia representative told many and many times that it will come very very soon... Now they are only talking about battery life.
And the N9 have much better hardware exept for the processor.
Can you do me a favor? Can you try Wikitude for me? Maybe i really have a bad Lumia.

That's really clever didn't think about that. I believe you i didn't understand why Nokia wouldn't such a stupid thing without a reason. I was complaining because, you know, sometimes you wait for the moment to arrive and with the L800 it's hard to just focus and wait.

What do you mean?
My Lumia 800 has a distinct difference between the focus mode (half-pressed) and snap mode (full pressed). The first half is much easier to push down and the second half if harder.

Harder maybe but it doesn't 'click'. My trophy camera button 'clicks' when you take a picture. The OP mentioned his Lumia didn't have this 'click' and i just said it was by design. This has nothing to with how hard it is to push the button.

I would agree with this, I'm really not sure what people are on when they say that white is not white on the Lumia. The HD7, Arc, Omnia 7 always seemed to be more cream than white to me.

I was reading Anandtech's review of the Galaxy nexus and he has a big section on the screen. It seems that some peoples eyes perceive the colour of the screen differently. Some people might notice an odd colour where some people observe 'white'.
I have an old Dell 20" widescreen, their first one. A lot of people complained about a 'screendoor' effect that I don't see. A friend of mine did notice it, maybe he'd complain the lumia screen is off-white too?

That's strange for me it's right the Galaxy's White are cream but the HD7 and the Mozart White were really White!
When i see my Lumia's White i don't need to stare at my screen for long i saw it the second i went in Mail application when i got it!
It's really better than the Galaxy S. Maybe it's true it depends on people.
I'm interested about the anand tech review.
About the camera you guys seems to agree about the fact that the second stage is hard to push. Believe me mine is really easy to push. I experienced it today i was trying to take a picture when i pushed the button it took the photo while it was focusing without me pushing hard...
Do you guys think it's a problem? When i don't even use the button it's loose it makes noise when i shake the phone is it normal?
PS: For the Whte i checked in the Diag app if it wasn't the Mail app who had this creamy effect!

Well, now that it's for the most part over, what were your thoughts on Nokia World.
I for one am not a fan of the Nokia 710 Sabre, the hardware is clearly high quality. However, the overall look and feel of the device looks too... HTC-ish. The 800/Searay on the other hand was simply astounding. I have no problem admitting that I was disappointed in the lack of a FFC, something that is rumored to be heading to the U.S. release but that still halts me from importing one. The rest of the device however, is awesome. The unibody is amazing, there's not a seam on the device. Even the glass seems to meld right in to the unibody. It's almost a work of art.
Another bit I was interested in was
The Nokia Kinetic flex display, bend your device one way to zoom in and the other to zoom out, there are numerous other applications for this but quite frankly, I just can't wait.
So, what do you think of Nokia's new offerings. They also released the Asha series running Series 40 which is an OS between smartphones and dumbphones to aid developing countries in accessing the internet.
Overall, it went well. I expected more things to occur that I didn't know in advance but I'm certainly not disappointed.
A little bit disappointed was hoping to hear about the ace, and no US release date.
The 800 is the one that looks like an ipod touch nano isn't it?
Well, the flexible phone could be excellent for hotheads. Girlfriend pisses them off, they can throw their phone as hard as they want against a wall and it will bounce right back to them.
hmmm. well, nokia is kinda garbage. and in my opinion windows mobile is the worst mobile OS ever conceived. lags, terrible UI. and we all know that nokia uses outdated hardware.

Get with the times. WP7 is better than all of them now. Android can't even compare to how nice WP7 is. Not even iOS, which bests Android for quality and reliability, can't even compare to WP7.
You're missing out on WP7.
So they've basically taken the N9 and bunged WP7 in it.

Honestly, I never was fond of those. They looked like the focus to me and though I like the focus, I wanted something new.
that bending screen and phone is a huge step towards new gen phones and wp is a soild OS , just needs time
Screw Nokia. I just found out the N9/800 isn't aluminum like I had believed. That was the only remaining thing in Nokia's favor and now that's gone. I won't even look in Nokia's direction now.
But me saying this should make Nokia more favorable to people who have hated them.
Hey just got HTC Radar..
Really a great phone, simply love WP7 and the hardware...
but was really supriced to se nothing going on in the HTC Radar forum ??
why is that ?
I will be on board when it is released on Wednesday in USA!
Unfortunately because it is new and cannot be interop-unlocked there is not much development ergo activity in this forum. Most peeps dwell on the WP7 General forum.
Hopefully after the US release we will see some more activity.
Hey I had a quick question. Is there a big air-gap between the screen and the glass?
Also does it have an S-LCD or just a regular LCD.
Thanks I want this phone but dont want too much compromise.

Says S-LCD.
I've had the phone for a couple of weeks already (I'm in Belgium) and I'm coming from the Nexus One (Android).
Must say I'm really impressed, great build quality and WP7 is great, really not much to complain about except things that are to be expected with a system that is still growing like WP7.
And yes, I'm hoping there will be a little more activity development wise when the phone is released in the US, right now there's not much going on for this phone...
I checked the phone out in a store the other day and all I can say is the screen is one of the biggest pluses on this device! It is gorgeous - you will not be disappointed.
I actually prefer the S-LCD that HTC is using to the Super Amoled screens from Samsung or just about any other display (save for the IPS displays Apples uses).
The other thing that stikes me when I hold this phone is how solid and sturdy it feels, but also how light and thin it is. It's really nice!
I do not see any air-gap really. Screen is S-LCD and its quite a masterpiece, sad that it still cannot be produced for bigger screens. Thou be aware, that it is not Super-AMOLED. That means the S-LCD blacks are still not exatly black tho close enough.

Thanks guys Im probably going to pick one up this weekend. Im with T-mobile USA and the only scary thing about getting this is the fact that if the merger goes through I would be screwed form in compatible bands.
im on my 5 day with HTC Radar, and i simply belive that RADAR is one of the BEST phones HTC has produced for a LOOONG time...
The quality is simply amasing and with a good speaker and really good sound when you talk in it...
And it's with WP7 I can not tell how much i love WP7. im coming from ANDROID and IOS ( SGS2, Sensation and iPhone 4) yes the spec on RADAR is not as amasing but I love it and think its better...
For me WP7 is overtaking Android and IOS and im a big ANDROID FAN...

i understand why you and some people would say about the size memory and ffc though for me i think the size is great as with my hd7 i did find my trouser pulled where is was so huge. ffc i dont think will get used anything like the amount ppl complain about it not being there. Mem is fair i would of wanted more but plus sides out weigh this.
HOWEVER not being aluminum is nothing but one of the best things to happen to this phone. Its a single moulded peice of polycarbonate so it will feel stirdier than any metal phone as well as having the advantage of 1. not showing scratches and most important 2 it does not mess up the antenna so your signal will be massivly improved. I do not get how anybody could consider this a bad thing at all but rather the best thing to ever happen to a phone.

My opinion is this is the best looking phone since the nokia 8850. That with amazing build and one of the best screens on any device makes this a must have. Then add the extra Nokia features plus the great camera not the best no, but up there and at a price point that makes iPhone look even more stupidly overpriced make this a true winner

I know it sucks esp as i am scrapping the walls already and i get mine in 2 days (one way or another) but if i lived in the USA i would advise waiting for the new year. I very strongly suspect they will bring a different version of the Lumia 800 with improved specs ie ffc and 32/64gb. I remember reading they said they will be bringing out top spec devices in usa in q1. I also suspect you will get a look in first at the 900/ace/champaign. Its a bit like htc with the hd2 you had to wait but you got the good stuff.
I just feel that unless you can afford to blow the cash for 2 months of use you will kick yourself for jumping in to early. Plus I dont think you get the full data speeds on t-mobile but that i am unsure of.
Sexiest phone with what I consider to be the best mobile OS. Yes yes yes!
Lumia 800 ROM
I just got my Lumia 800 from Telecom Germany, it has modyfied software for Telecom, start logo, special Telecom ringtones etc.
Do anyone know how to get the General Nokia software to the phone... ?
I would really like to "debrand" it.

it really is beautiful. amoled looks great at first sight. (on second sight the letters dont look "clean"). its really fast. compared to the titan it seems much snappier when scrolling trough the ui.
however its so tiny.. i cant imagine to use it for long web-browsing sessions.
also.. 16gb non expandable is a joke these days. With 64GB i would have bought it instantly. Being one sexy music player could be a good selling point..
so na i guess i pass on this generation of wp..

People just say this rubbish because its thein thing to say or like anything that results in a direct diss to Microsoft. It is a worrying trend esp when even with all there faults, and there are many, Microsoft is still the best option for most. At the end of the day it is the end users that miss out and we will all miss out big style if it continues. Even MS cant take this bad attitude towards it for ever and that will lend us to a world dominated by apple clones and/or software made in peoples bedrooms. I love android i love linux but could i live with just them all the time? Not a chance. Like it or not MS is leading the way in the tech world with everything from office 365 to windows 8 to xbox live to exchange to hyperV etc. What would the world be like without then? We geeks would be fine we have linux but what about my mum and my sister etc? what about me trying to administer our network without active directory and group policy? Everyone says MS steals technology yet we keep forgeting they are normally the first to come with it they just get beat down or mess it up but they ae there pushing forward and inovating. Windows phone is just one example along with Windows 8 of how MS is set to change the game for the better if only we let them.
Thank you my friend.
There are two major and two minor issues I have with this phone.
First is Pentile. There are two types of people - those who see it and those who don't. I do, so I was thinking about returning the phone at first. Now I'm sort of living with it, but still black text on white background looks like crap to me.
Second is no equalizer.
The two minor issues are the fact that the USB port is located on top of the device and that it has a lid. This is less annoying than Pentile but still very awkward.
Otherwise it's a great phone.
As topic says, what's the best choice?
Get it now, the changes of titan 2 are a 16MP cam which should be even badder then the 8MP (your eye can only see only up to 7,2MP) or so.
The changes are very minimal
Yeah you're right, I'll just get it now instead of waiting. I'm so excited, have used a WP7 theme on my iPhone 4 since forever and it's really nice looking (made alot of UI changes myself) but I'm missing the overall experience of WP7 still.
Yep,get the Titan now !
It's thinner than Titan 2 and has better build quality too.The only reason to get T2 is it's camera.

I might as well ask here, how far does WP7 go with customizing your own stuff. I'm not sure what I'm asking.. but can you "hack" it and stuff?
Not quite yet, at least not in the second generation of WP7 devices, what you can hack is essentially nothing. And any work that has been done might be reset to ground zero when WP8 comes out :/

Hm, that is probably the biggest negative point of WP7. You can't customize it much (select the color of your tiles and which tiles you have on your "homescreen ". That's it basically). Of course the complete opposite of Android, but even with iOS you get the ability to jailbreak to install apps that aren't in the app store. With WP7 even that is not really there. You can unlock the phone (costs $10 or so but also that may end soon) to get a bit more freedom. But in terms of hacking, replacing parts of the system, installing a lot of apps that can do a bit more or allow you to change the look of WP7- well, if you want it, it is possibly not the right OS.

You can create folders and change some of the tiles. Look up wiztile in the marketplace and ....
http://windowsphonehacker.com/folders
Neither of them require jailbreak of any kind.
Oh and with just the developer unlock you can do this...

The thing is ... the phone is VERY secure. No holes found in IE yet, unlike apples safari which allows the jailbreak. Everything is isolated and sandboxed so no worries of any app taking over your phone. Hence it's fast secure, but limited it customization.
Why are people saying the Titan 2 has weaker build quality? From the previews I've read, it seems on par if not better than the first Titan. It is also a metal unibody, but has the usual HTC rubber coating on the metal as opposed to just raw metal. The 720p video is also on a different playing field from the samples I've seen. THe photo samples also seem to have better dark shots. It does have a much bigger sensor and lens on the back after all.
Other than the camera and maybe the choice in build, and whether you want LTE or not, yeah the two Titans are like brothers.

Where did you read that ? Because the backside of Titan is mostly aluminum;whereas,Titan 2 has more plastic on the backside.(That's I think the reason Titan 1 is heavier)
Correct me if I'm wrong

You are absolutely right on Titan 1 being heavier. It's not that heavy but I would say sturdier. Titan 2 will come with a plastic backside, only to cover that chunky 16MP camera's add hardware. But then if it's LTE supported and your network provider doesn't do LTE yet, in my opinion it's worthless waiting for Titan 2. You will be getting a device that could have been sturdier, more HTC feeling than Samsung feeling and much better with battery life. However if Titan 2 comes with Tango and current fragmentation rumours are true, then Titan 2 would have issues making it to Apollo whereas Titan 1 might get Apollo faster. It's on pocketPC about Thurrott's claims indicating fragmentation is what MS will opt for. (I don't like it!)
What in the world are you talking about? Titan 2 is going to co-exist with Titan 1 as the higher end of the two devices. HTC said it themselves when people asked why they are releasing a new Titan when the first one has barely been out for a few months. Saying it is going to get Tango and be slower updated...
And no the Titan 2 is not a plastic phone. It follows the same design pattern as all their other phones. Metal unibody. Plastic on top around camera for the camera and wifi. Plastic on bottom for cell radios. The first Titan is not 100% metal either. The phone would not work otherwise with all the signal blockage. It's almost like you've never seen an HTC phone before. Most are metal build with rubber coating.

I never said T2 is plastic.I said most parts of it's backside is covered with plastic(unlike T1)
I guess we can judge better when the review come out
WP7 is definitely my choice, I now know you can't "hack" it but that doesn't bother me since it looks and feels exactly as I want it. 25th of Februrary = Titan
WP 7 Hackable ?

Don't know if It's going to happen on the Titan but if you look at other WP7 phones forums it might give you some idea of what has/ is happening as far as user development goes. Although not as customiseable as the other OS out there seeing what has happened to other devices and systems in the past might give you some idea of what you might be lucky enough to get in the future

I might as well ask here, how far does WP7 go with customizing your own stuff. I'm not sure what I'm asking.. but can you "hack" it and stuff?

Are you a student? If yes, you can unlock your phone for free and "hack it" as you wrote. If not, then you'll have to pay $99 for developper account.
Student go to Dreamspark, others go to the bank .

Right now I'm on my 2nd Galaxy Nexus (Samsung replaced my 1st one after much messing, it popped n died)
And while I like its vanilla ICS, I'm having big issues over usability due to nothing more than its screen size of 4.65"
On my old HTC Incredible S 4" I could "dance" with my thumb and get around the OS very very quickly.
Every time I stop by a cellphone store and play with the Lumia 800 it fits perfect and I get that "dance" feeling with the ways its in my hand and the speed I can get around the OS.
I'm liking WMP 7.5 a lot.
The sticking point.
Where I live there is no broadband, so I have the true "all you can eat" data plan from "three" that included tethering.
I also have line of sight of just over 100 yards to a celltower I know is "three" and can hit 8mbps average and sometimes hit 11mbps.
Am I being foolish on planning on getting a Lumia 800 with the WiFi tether when the updates is fullt rolled out and selling the GN?
You've got to get the phone that turns you on. Once tethering is available on the Lumia... if you're still madly in love with it and can accept its shortcomings.... then go with what you love.
I have to admit that most of the phones I've ever bought have been for their design aesthetic over their function or specs.
You're also asking this question in a forum where 95% of people here use the Lumia 800, so you are going to get a pretty biased answer. I can already tell you most people will say get the Lumia.
Get the phone that suits you. If you do enjoy Windows Phone and the Lumia 800 hardware, I see no reason not to get the phone unless there is something you need on the GN/Android that Windows Phone can't accomplish for you at the moment.
Probably better to answer the question in a general forum rather than one specific to a device, but even there, you'll probably start a nice little flame war from both sides saying the other one sucks. XD
I've had iPhone 3G, HTC HD7, Galaxy S and now the Lumia in the last 2 years.
You're completely right about screen size. This must vary with the size of a persons hands but for me the maximum screen size that doesn't have usability issues is 4in like the Galaxy S.
The HD7 at 4.3in caused me the same issues as you've found.
I've had a play with the Galaxy Nexus and it's a very nice piece of kit but after using the Lumia it's clear to see that the lags are still there even on a flagship phone. The Lumia is really slick and fast. I can see why you like it. I liked it so much I ditched my Galaxy S which was running ICS.
It's the best phone I've had since my iPhone. And for my money it's a nicer piece of hardware than the current iPhone design. The OS is great too, apart from a few areas where it's lacking.
The downsides are the current issues with battery life and audio quality. You're putting trust in Nokia to sort these out with software updates. Battery life in particular is a real worry, I expect to charge every day but it's struggling to get through the day which means I don't use it as much as I'd like to.
It's not foolish to get something that will (might?) work better for you. The GN is much more powerful, but if it's too big for you to use comfortably, there is not a lot you can do.
I'm a cheap whore myself and I flop between WP/ICS/MeeGo and iOS on a daily basis. The Lumia is spectacular hardware and Mango is a fantastic OS. Grab one and play with both, each has it's own set of strengths and weaknesses.
yeah, borrowing one is the hard part.

Ask the shop if you can test one out for a day?
they tend not to allow that
as we all know 5 minutes of fiddling in a shop is not enough
24 hours would be and ideal test.
more research required.
I've got the lumia and the GN. The form factor and build quality of the Nokia are excellent, and the interface is really smooth and a joy to use, but ...and it's a big but for me .....it desperately needs more apps. I'm not going give up on the lumia just yet, but there is no way I'd ditch my GN, or android, for the lumia at the moment.

God i love this phone too, i used to think i might be a Android fun for a long time but i just realist that Windows Phone is good too, and the speed of Lumia 800 is really amazing.
Still no tethering
Hi all,
I agree with the previous posts. The Lumia 800 is brilliant. Smooth as silk, and quick. Software updates seem to have fixed my battery and wifi issues.
But we are now almost in March - and still no tethering, and nokia Austria says there never will be on the Lumia 800.
So you do have to factor that into your decision.
Well thats a "no" then
Silly decision
I think it is not silly.
I will quit android in the next few days (from nexus also)
Because of the apps factor, I tried to do the following:
Start to use only apps of my android (more than 200) that are in the WP market also. And I realized that I have everything I need for my work in motion.
The apps that are only in android but I want them are: skype, viber, dropbox, box.
I am sure they will be able soon, but anyway, WP has SkyDrive.
Instead most of the android apps we need just good browser.
I am sure the real software will be written for WP... soon I hope.
No Tether = no go as my tether is my broadband.

There's another post where someone said that another branch of Nokia has said that tethering will come in 2012.
So clearly, there has been no official stance on whether tethering will or won't be added to the phone, but I see no reason why it can't be added due to the phone's internals.
Nokia just needs to turn it on.
