Programming apps on prime.. - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Does anyone knows any programs I can use on Asus Prime to create apps instead of using Eclispe?
Thanks!

The only one I know of so far it is Terminal IDE, but its definitely not the graphical development environment you are looking for. Its a text-based Unix/Linux shell that includes an android compiler for programs you write in a basic text editor. Download it and run through the usage tutorials, but then keep on looking and hoping. I'm right there with you.

I was planning on using the remote desktop application (splashtop hd I think) to remote into my development machine running Windows / Ubuntu to do some programming. I just picked up the Prime last night so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

I'm able to deal with C, C++, Java,Perl, Python, and Ruby for general development on my system; haven't installed Haskell, SML, CLR/.NET, or lisp stuff yet but assume it'll work. I also have *most of the Android SDK running natively on my tablet but not working smoothly yet.
For on device Android dev, you should probably just look at the aforementioned Terminal IDE app.
You can also use SSH, Splashtop, VNC, RDP, or Telnet to use as a terminal. At work we usually use SSH to a development server even though we have powerful workstations, so I frequently use an Android .

Spidey how are you doing your C/C++/Python development on your prime? Are you just using the GCC compiler? or with an IDE? I'm quite interested

I write c++, and I use C4droid. It's in the market, and cost a couple bucks, but it works very well. It does c++ as well as c, possibly more but not sure.

I use a Debian chroot and BTEP. I go in and use a tmux session (I compiled a modern version from source) and use VI IMproved; you need sth like dtatch, screen, or tmux, cuz BTEP doesn't always multitask well. Except for the chroot, this is how I do development on PC's as well and always have (Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Linux). IDE's like Visual Studio and Eclipse have little value to me, except for tools like Microsoft's tool chain (used by the VS IDE).
And yes, I do use GCC, usually. I should also try and rig a cross compiler to Linux/X86 and Linux/x86_64 sometime but I'm lazy. Ditto for CPython.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but what is the best programming app/software (On the Prime or in windows) to design Android games on for a complete novice?

I used to use UltraEdit32 and the command line to work with Java before I discovered Eclipse. Notepad would word just as well.
Why don't you want to use Eclipse?

He's asking for something that can be used ON the prime, not a PC. It'd be really nice to have eclipse or anything similar available for using with the prime. Having at least the SDK would be of help.

Unless Eclipse is tied to x86 to strongly, you should be able to run it on the prime, but via the VNC/X11 thing. A native one is not practical for a project that scale. Bigger still is the issue of local development: running X11/GUI apps locally for testing is not fun but at least Android stuff is possible.
This thread is also making me think of how many newbies I've seen that try to write the next MS Word or Quake using an IDE's builder tool, before they even grsdp the languages syntax :-/. Then get frustrated and either give up or continue to fail.

Android on Xbox And Wii

So I wanted to see peoples reaction to porting android to a Xbox or wii ? I have been contemplating putting some time and money into porting a rom for the wii I think it would be really crazy! I managed to get the android live disc running on my modded Xbox but no controls yet. Would anyone be interested in a rom for the wii if I get it working? Let me now!

The Wii would be helped by the fact that it has a massive Linux porting community. Check out Whiite Linux. Sadly, they barely have X Window running on most implementations.
On that matter, most of the android functionality is already there, it's a matter of looking pretty. Short Of Angry Birds, they've beat you to it in a lot of ways. They've got apps and even an appstore called the Homebrew Browser. Everything is very slow, but what can you expect from it? Yes, most of the good stuff is running by putting Devkit Pro on top of a weak linux, so some improvement could be had. It's not android, but it does the same things.
So far as the 360 goes, if you could put an indie game out with an intentional bug that lets you run Androidx86 off a thumb drive, you could use the Kinect to emulate touch screen. USB keyboard is available to fill in the rest.

It'd be great, but considering that the Wii is running on 2001 State Of The Art, I doubt it will be able to handle much without the official devkit (Which is illegal unless you are a major label dev). Also, everything has to be put into a binary to load, so even Whiite is being done a convoluted way. I have a bit of knowledge of running homebrew on Wii, so I can get you any info or testing you need.
Start with Froyo. Honeycomb won't happen. Maybe Ice Cream Sandwich, but not Honeycomb, for this type of project, you'll NEED kernel source.
I'd be willing to test on Wii or 360. Sounds awesome.
Wow! Right up my street. My two favs mashed together. So INTERESTED! I'm new to the 'DEV', but addicted, and learning at lightspeed. Xboxs ready and waiting 2 serve! Xbox nandroid would revolutionize the world. It would be one of the most popular PCs ever, not to mention cheap.

Found A Way
Okay, so i was doing some searching and i found something called android-x86
(wwwDOTandroid-x86DOTorg) and they have full source code for a x86/PPC version of android, gingerbread currently. which is good because of the wii which has a PPC prossesor. If you do some editing im sure someone can make android for wii.
I'd be willing to test either system android TV would be cool if we could figure that out .. wii or 360 would be excellent to have android os on it I'm thinking wii would be easy for everyone to use since its so easy to mod and the hbc delivers downloads for everyone

An android desktop would be slower than a version like linux or windows and android just doesn't have the software of any desktop os so would be a poor choice to use as one.
For example say you want to convert a video or add subtitles to it, make a rom or do some developing etc. Bit hard on what is meant to be a mobile os. Next android version could change that but not anytime soon.

The Linux 3.3 kernel is bringing in Android features. There is also the Ubuntu for Android project going on. I imagine if Android stays popular that someday you'll be able to easily run Android apps right in Linux. This would help out Linux as it would get some popular apps out there like Neflix and may make it more appealing to people.
At this point, an Android desktop ui wouldn't be of use to anyone, really. As stated before Android doesn't have any desktop applications, and it would likely be a few hundred mb's to get a fairly usable set of apps. Why go through the trouble, when you can just use a launcher like kde plasma?

No. Plasma is not basically a Read Only Image (ROM) of a system.
Plasma is the desktop shell of the K Desktop Environment (KDE).
Your android device is more of an actual Linux system than various systems you can run KDE on, as KDE is in not limited to systems running on top of a Linux kernel.

I'm eagerly awaiting an android desktop environment. I've been using osx for a decade, and I'm getting a little sick of it. Windows is on my gaming machine, and always will be. Plus I can use that machine for heavy CPU stuff like video conversion. But I would love to switch to a smooth Androud environment for every-day use (web browsing, facebook, email, IM, etc).
In the same vein, my friend's daughter corrupted her netbook with viruses within about 2 weeks of getting it, despite anti-virus protection, etc. I offered to install Linux (Newborn) for her to try, which she did, and loved it. Now her only complaint is that she can't download cool apps like she can on her Android. That's another perfect Android scenario. Unfortunately Android x86 isn't compatible with half the hardware on the device (yet). But hopefully someday...

Project AOSP! Let's do it!

Hi gang.
Here is an idea brewing in my head. I know it will spin your head. I am embarking on a mission to bring AOSP to this forsaken land... Fair warning. As you see, there is no "recognized developer" tag underneath my name and for a good reason, I am not one! An average newb here as far as AOSP deving is concerned. I do know the very basics, I did build a couple AOSP builds for the Dinc2 and Transformer prime, but that was trivial as those devices were already supported. This device is not. So, I'll need to figure out how to first setup the environment for this and then learn to make a kernel from the source HTC has (if they released it that is).
So, anyone here who can point me to the right direction to kick this off!?
This thread is intended to be a platform for all those interested in helping bring AOSP to our device. Any and all helpful suggestions in this regard will be appreciated!
Hell yeah! I'm pretty sure if we all pull together we can get something cooking. I was wondering though obviously we aren't on jelly bean. Would it be easier to build an ics cm9 and then add select features like the lock screen, camera, animations etc?

Dunno. I was actually thinking if it is better to build Jellybean 4.1 rather than the latest and greatest 4.2.1. But if there aren't significant changes, may be we can pull off a 4.2 build. I just want to first learn to compile AOSP so that it even boots. I believe I need to mod files to build it for our environment... I wonder where I can learn this stuff..
Nits, Andy, help please!
My new laptop is running Windows 8 and I believe it will be a PITA to get Linux running natively on that due to the UEFI fiasco... I wonder if VM linux will be as fast as native... If not, I'll use my current machine to build and use the new one to due my regular stuff...

[Q] Why choose Ubuntu Touch over Android

I am wondering why people would want to use Ubuntu Touch over android. I don't see many (if any) benefits of using it over Android.
I see that the section isn't very popular, but I hope someone can answer my question.
Thank you
I want a change. I'm tired of Android in a way. I'm the kind of guy that used to install a new Linux distribution every week. Not anymore though, no distro is compatible with my wireless adapter.
The prospect of a swipe based OS excites me. Plus, it's Ubuntu. I actually don't need a reason more than that.

These are exactly the reasons why I am using Ubuntu Touch as well (except that I've never installed another Linux distribution than Ubuntu).
And I like the community. There's one on Google Plus and for bugs, you've got Launchpad. That way you can contribute to the project and discuss bugs very easily. Moreover, Canonical is very open towards ideas from the community. They do weekly Q&A sessions and they give you many information about what they actually do. And there are these daily updates which you can install if you want to (I do ).
Additionally, I like how simple app development is for Ubuntu Touch (at least what I've seen so far, working on my first real app).
You should, however, keep in mind that it's still in a very early stage. There's no native email app yet, you need to use webapps (there's one for Google Mail for example). Nevertheless, there are new apps every day.
If you're lucky there's a dual-boot solution for your phone. For a lot of Nexus devices there's MultiROM by @Tasssadar. This is what I currently use. I rarely reboot to Android though.
I'm looking for a more open alternative to google/android. Google is building a walled garden as they move their apps to close source and more tightly integrate google with the device. Try using stock aosp without a google account. I like being able to customize and mod my phone, but lately, I can feel uncle google getting a little too pushy about what I can and can not do on my phone. I can understand google's business model and the individual users who choose, knowingly or unknowingly, to subscribe to it, although it is not to my taste, so I am looking for alternatives that are truly open where my data and privacy are under my control.
Putting aside my issues with google, other advantages of ubuntu touch would be a linux based OS that integrates with my desktop (also linux). I think Canonical/Ubuntu/Shuttleworth has hit the nail on the head with device convergence. To me, the phone and the desktop are just hardware that I happen to use in different places. The content, the data, and the connectivity are the things that are important to my user experience. The hardware is merely the finger pointing to the moon.

Completely true. We definitely need more privacy and the convergence idea is great. :good:
can't wait one minute more
Androids Google+ integration gets more and more annoying. Don't wanna deal with that social media crap.
...and I will never forgive Google for ditching Talk which was a huge opportunity to establish an open format.

Broadcom got you too eh? Haha, and I agree. The first Ubuntu distro I installed on a PC was 8.04 LTS. After having to mess around with the terminal to get ANY wireless adapter to work back then, really set me up for the era of Android smart phones. I love Ubuntu, I love the philosophy of Ubuntu. And when Ubuntu touch takes off, I'll definitely be excited to flash it onto a phone. Like you said, I don't need any more of a reason other than it's Ubuntu.

Sure about that? I heard that Ubuntu will never support Android apps. Sailfish and Tizen do, but not Ubuntu. Correct me if I'm wrong (sources?).

I thought the same thing with webOS. It's Linux, why not port? But even though the core is the same the code on top is not. Difference between c++, qml, java, and JavaScript. For ACL, There is a sense of moving towards other Mobile Linux OS's. Money is the factor.

I can't see why they wouldn't be easily ported to Ubuntu. Both are Linux based

Well, they removed Dalvik and ART from that part of Android which they are using in Ubuntu for phones. So there won't be Android apps. (The Android design wouldn't fit into Ubuntu as well.)
Quote from an Engadget interview:
Since Android is also Linux-based, is there any plan for Ubuntu to run Android apps?
Many Android developers already use Ubuntu as their desktop OS and we have a very close affinity with them. We intend to encourage them to make their Android applications run on Ubuntu, but we won't engineer any middleware for running Android apps. Developers are intelligent and capable enough to make their apps run on our devices. We have an active initiative right now to directly help them achieve this.

EDIT: Have a look at this as well: http://askubuntu.com/questions/247973/will-android-apps-be-compatible-with-the-ubuntu-phone-os
I want to switch because I want all my devices to be uniform and work with each other in a way Apple and Microsoft are failing to do. Having Ubuntu on my laptops, tablets, phones, desktops and televisions, and them working flawlessly together is going to be killer. Too bad this won't happen for another couple of years or so.

Not completely. You can't have all your devices (TV, Mobile devices, computers, etc.) Running one unified platform. What Canonical wants to do is use one OS across all devices with changes to the UI so it fits with whatever you are using. So you will (in the future) be running Ubuntu desktop across all your devices with changes to the UI.

You already do, except those 5 % which Unity makes up.
The Unity version is the only thing that's still different.
Nothing yet?
No news about this? D: i need Ubuntu on my phone xDDDD

I want complete uniformity. And that's what Canonical is doing.

I am wondering why people would want to use Ubuntu Touch over android. I don't see many (if any) benefits of using it over Android.
I see that the section isn't very popular, but I hope someone can answer my question.
Thank you

I want the Ubuntu Touch for my Samsung Galaxy S3 do to the fact it's able to sync to the desktop, this would all be work-friendly as I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and have this setup as my OS.
Still looks underdeveloped and I don't want to flash as I think my bootloader is jammed. I'm happy with the android but would like to venture into this.
Hope that answers your question for you.

I want to see Ubuntu on my phone and tablet because then once the real initial hurdle happens it will be fork season. If there are only small changes needed underneath to make Ubuntu run on any android device that can already run cyanogen mod it will be trivial to modifty each new version quickly to run on compatible devices. When forking the distro takes off we will probably see an automated system to build the needed underparts for each device pop up.

If i wanted to build a ROM for my TF201

Could someone advise me on a tutorial or guide on how to get the SDK going. I'd like to do it via Linaro as well. I've found Linaro does a really good job especially on my Galaxy Nexus. I've tried to setup the SDK a few times but I found it very confusing and just gave up. Not even sure my machine would compile it in a realistic time. I got a quad core cpu and 8gb ram in my pc running windows 7. If I could do this I could then release it to the masses.

Also, go through the official google android dev sight in regards to certain terminology, as well as usin the Cyanogenmod wiki for further info.
