[Q] Need to Unroot and get back to stock ROM. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, Firstly i am sorry to ask as i know there is already a general topic on this in various posts, and i do have the basic jist...but i wanted to ask this so i can be CERTAIN that the info i get is correct for my setup.
So my SGS2 on Virgin mobile.....was rooted with Chainfires rooting method, then flashed with Villainrom.
Here are the infos as of now.
Android version : 2.3.4
Baseband: 19100XXKH3
Kernel: Ninphetamine 2.6.35
Villainrom 2.4.2
So basically i need to get the phone exactly how it was when it was new from the store, Unrooted and on the stock rom.
Please could somebody give me a short guide on how i can do this? i would really appreciate the help

Find carrier specific stock firmware here or if your carrier isn't listed, get country specific firmware here.
Follow the instructions & you shouldn't have any problems. If you need to return your phone for warranty service, do a factory reset & use a jig to reset the flash counter.

Do wipe data/cache from CWM recovery, wipe dalvik cache and flash the Stock ROM ( version that came wtih your phone ) from Intratech thread via odin.
Your phone will be in stock condition.
hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply, but im still a bit confused as to which firmware is the correct one?
The first link has my carrier (Virgin) but only 2 downloads for it...Austrailia and Canada. Im in the UK.
again im sorry for being nooby, but all these different downloads confuse me and i dont want to mess this up, also i have a jig to reset the counter, thx again for your help!

Thankyou for your reply and help, but im not sure which version came with my phone
Is there a way to find this out?

XWKI4 - XEU(UK) seems to be the best choice. I've also checked with CheckFus to see if there's a Virgin specific rom available (there isn't).
At the end of the day, you void your warranty the moment you flash non-stock firmware.
In saying that, as long as you re-flash stock firmware, do a factory reset to get rid of any apps that might tip off whomever fixes your phone that you've rooted it, and use a jig to reset the counter, you more than likely won't have any problems with warranty service.
If you're looking for 100% absolute guarantees of this, there aren't any.

[Q] Flashing to new rom - Advice please!

Hi, my S2 was a stock T-Mobile UK phone which I flashed to KE7 via odin (phone appears to now be unbranded).
I'd like to install the new lite'ning rom, but was unsure if I needed to re-flash the phone back to stock first or if I can just go ahead and flash it as it is.
Here are the current details:
PDA:I9100XWKE7
Phone: I9100XXKE4
CSC:I9100XEUKD1
Many thanks!

Follow the instructions in the lite'ning rom thread?
It doesn't mention anything about that and I didn't want to assume. There are over 100 pages in that thread so reading every page isn't really practical, I hoped someone might have already been in this situation and would therefore know a quick answer.
Well if you dont want to read then just flash it and you know where to look if something goes wrong in the 100+ pages .
Reading this post says one you flashed from TMobile branded rom to a stock KE7 .
THAT IS STOCK .

I've read quite a bit of the 100 page thread, surely knowledge gained that might prevent an issue is better than running around like a headless chicken trying to fix it after the fact?
Yes, KE7 is stock but it's not T-mobile stock and as I'm new I'm trying to get an understanding of how re-flashing my phone might affect future flash attempts.
I would of course just have posted the question in the lite'ning thread (which is really where this needs to go), but 10 posts are needed before I can post there.
Thanks for your help.

The litening rom is based on ke7. I presume you are tmobile uk? If so, then you just flash it via odin. I suppose if you wanted, you could flash cfroot(look for chainfires thread in dev) and do a backup after cwm recovery. Or you can just flash the litening via odin. The litening instructions says it doesnt wipe.
You could always pm the litening dev.

[Q] how easy is it to roll-back (un-root)?

Hi all,
A quick question on how easy to roll back (un-root) and put back the stock ROM?
My current ROM is stock Telstra ROM. (just bought the phone today)
PDA: DVKF4
PHONE: DVKF2
CSC: TELKF3
Build Info : Jun 21
I know how to roll back a HTC Desire - by installing the RUU image from HTC or use the PB99IMG.zip install method to remove "root" and put back into std ROM.
I have yet to root my SGS2. Reason to un-root and go back to stock ROM is for warranty purposes. you never know what will happen (for example, my desire decides to dies on me yesterday, had to put back stock ROM to submit for warranty claim).
thank you in advance

Nope. Jig is only required to clear the custom Rom counter, in case you have to claim warranty and return the phone to Samsung. And also to force the phone in Download mode, if something bad happens while flashing custom ROM etc.
hey cad,
Made any headway here?
I just bought an SGS2 from Telstra as well and I have a similar phone to yours.
PDA: DVKF4
PHONE: DVKF2
CSC: TELKF3
I too would like to retain the stock kernel, firmware and csc.
If we root with an insecure kernel, how do we go back to stock kernel if it's not downloadable?
Could we just flash another kernel if we are making a warranty claim and hope they don't check?
I assume CSC is where all the Telstra crap is stored and once we get ROOT, we should be able to back this up out of \system

Usual is flash a relevant stock rom or older stock rom and update via Kies.

2. How to root.
3 what is odin and all the tools required to root and flash custom firmware.
Video tutorials would be healpful. Im comming from a HTC HD2 but it feels like the explanations were easier to find.

[Q] Finding SGS2 stock kernel

Regarding the Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100,
I'm totally new in this field and I have no idea which stock kernel should I be getting.
The info says:
PDA: UHKI2
PHONE: UHKI1
CSC: UBKI2
BTW, kies writes the following:
PDA:KI2, PHONE:KI1, CSC:KI2 (VNO)
which part of that matters most? I can't find a kernel that exactly matches mine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
PS: I found "GT-I9100_VNO_I9100UHKE2_I9100UHKE2_I9100UBKD1" - does it match mine?
When looking for a kernel, which part should match mine? UH -> UH? or KI2 -> KI2? I am totally confused.
what would happen if I switched to another stock kernel, which is different than my stock one?
You are running the latest rom for your location (Some where Latin America) The one you found is an old one.
You have to read read read all of the posts or use the search engine, before you start trying to brick your phone.
can you explain abit more?
What if I change my ROM/kernel/whatever and after that I wanna go back to stock.
How do I get MY kernel?
Sorry for being annoying :>

I think that I kinda got it.
Anyway, thanks for helping!
I will keep reading more about this..
last question though:
When I get a custom ROM, it may also change my kernel right?
and is the ROM mentioned above - "GT-I9100_VNO_I9100UHKE2_I9100UHKE2_I9100UBKD1" the same as mine? (but older)
Hi, Please I need help, right now..
I flased CM 7.1 on my SGS2, and it had a problem the installation went fine, but after 5 minutes use it was freezing, and I could only pull out the battery to restart it. I tried restoring my nandroidbackup with CWM, but it seems that he version changed from 5.0.2.7 to 5.0.2.6 and now it does recognize by backup anymore.
Now..in CWM, I wiped/factory reset, and wiped dalvik cache and power off the phone. Now I want to install stock. I think I have to use ODIN. What kernel and ROM should I use ? Is it ok if I flash with ODIN after wiping everyting ?
yes wipe everything and use odin to flash correct rom for your region or the latest of any other region doesnt matter. but you should have i9100.

OMG! Have i bricked my BRANDNEW phone?

Hi guys,
I got my orange samsung galaxy s2 less than a week. Yesterday after rooting, flashing villianrom, i like an idiot, installed Clearglass 1.6 Theme zip via CWM. After rebooting, the phone has now gone into a boot loop. But since i had a nandroid backup (NOT A ZIP FILE!), i thought i'll simply restore...but i can't! The sdcard won't mount. So then i found THIS THREAD.
After following the instructions, i still can't mount the SD Card, yet it's fine in windows 7.
I also thought i'd try to use the ODIN method to reflash my stock fw, but i can't find the correct kernel version . FYI, i'm from uk and the details of my phone are below:-
MODEL: GT-I9100P
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.4
BASEBAND VERSION: I9100PBVKI2
KERNEL: [email protected] #2
BUILD NO: GINGERBREAD.BVKI3
PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME! I can't be without my phone
Not sure what you are asking .
Firmware is not kernel whatever your correct firmware is that includes the kernel .
You have a 1900P whatever the P is .
Find the firmware not the kernel here .
Stock Roms .and csc

Alternative
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Still problems use usb jig to set rom counter to zero .
Return to service centre .

Many thanks for showing me the correct version. I wasn't too sure as i didn't want to mess up the phone permanently. So i simply follow the ODIN boot loop guide?
The way it looks to me is that CWM/Phone is corrupted as i've tried everything - mount/format/unmount/re-mount sd, but it won't detect.
OH BTW! Can you please clarify something for me. I thought that since my orange stock rom said "KI3", i must always get a "KI3"....have i got that wrong? if so how can a KI4 work on a KI3 and why is it not necessary to stick with KI3?
Hey there wowandroid, the KI* is, in my humble opinion just a revision number, higher could mean better reliability in terms of signal and perhaps even battery drain
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
thanks AJ. It's just that my i9100 is P model (i9100P) and has NFC capabilities. I've managed to flash the phone back with the ki4 rom, so big thank you to JJEgan. I just thought that because i have a p model, i might end up removing features once i flash with a ki4.
Anyway, now that i've got it working, can i go ahead and use odin to flash villianrom/checkrom back again?

checkrom is compactable with every Theme out there if its built for the latest XWKK5 version which checkrom is on!
So first
1)Install ROM
2)Use there Kitchen Download only any one of the themes, and hit apply and then install (Obviously)
OR
You can Download manually from the Forums any theme or any thing for stock XWKK5
3)After a theme install u will reboot.
4)Then use there Kitchen to flash any mods etc u want
Personally i use this via Kitchen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310527

hi guys,
i'm about to get started with the update. couple of questions though:-
1. What kernel do you recommend? I need a kernel which gives it the longest battery life if possible.
2. What theme do you recommend? I need a theme which is good eyecandy, but isn't too bloated. Something like this for the villianrom:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229723
3. Is there a rom posted that has already been customised and tweaked with popular kernels/themes? Saves me messing around.

[Q] Wrong kernel flashed

Hi all, I have a brand new galaxy SII bought in Belgium. I wanted to root it but something went wrong. I used this guide:
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/
Now I think I know what went wrong, the guide is only for a device already on ICS (i think) which was not the case. Trouble is that I do not know which kernel version was on the device before the flash and now he doesn't boot anymore. I just see the galaxy S2 logo with triangle and that's it.
Can you please help me? I'm sorry, I know I was really not careful enough...
If you can get into download mode, follow the guide here to root your phone & consider yourself lucky.
If you can't get into download or recovery mode, you're probably boned. Try a jig before you send it to a service center or have it JTAG repaired by a 3rd party.

Thank you for the very quick answer I can get to the download mode without a problem so I think its repairable. Also thank you for the link, problem is that I do not know which version of the insecure kernel i need since the phone doen't boot anymore and I can't see the about phone page... Any tips on that? Or will it be a trial and error game to see with which kernel the phone boots?
Thank you very much for your help!
OK. Being able to get into download mode is good. Now, finding the kernel that came with the phone...
I probably wouldn't go down the trial & error route, have a look at this thread . Don't worry about the links, what you need to do is find the matching kernel for your carrier & country. Then you can look for the matching insecure kernel in the CFRoot thread I linked you to in the previous post.
Edit to add - Linked to wrong thread in first instance, OP, make sure the link you click on takes you to 'Official I9100 Carrier Branded Firmwares'.
Thank you very much. You really are a great help I will try it tommorow morning when I have a bit more time (I don't want to screw it up again ).
No probs ;-) If you have any dramas, post in this thread again. Important thing is to make sure you find the right kernel in that carrier branded firmware thread in the 2nd post, then in the CFRoot kernel thread find the closest match.
For example, if your original kernel is --KF2, you would try and find a matching CFRoot kernel. If there is a KF2 CFRoot kernel, good. You use that. But, if there wasn't a KF2 CFRoot kernel but there was a KF1 or KF3, you could use either of those. Again, this is just an example but should give you an idea of what to look for.
I just booted succesfully. No data lost, everything just fine I did exactly what you said and it worked like a charm. I cannot thank you enough Just wanted to let you know
Really ? Got the phone rooted & all working well ? Very good No probs, glad it worked out well for you/no data loss & most importantly no borked phone
Yep all working fine now. I even put ressurection ics on it without a single problem very glad you were so helpful!
It was so unfortunate that I'm now in this position, a stuck galaxy s 2 logo with triangle on it.
Earlier today, I rooted an SGS2 of my friend on 2.3.4 using XW_NEE_KI4-42: 2.3.4, CF-Root v4.2, SU 3.0, "insecure" to correspond with the 'KI4' code. After that I flashed it with CM9 and all went well.
Seeing the success, another friend wanted me to do the same to his device. I gladly picked up the phone (which was using an official ICS ROM) and simply rooted it using the same file as above via Odin. That is the part where I did wrong. So this phone won't boot and now I have no idea what the 'code' was. Still, odin mode is accessible.
So, where do I go from here?
Should I make new thread for this? Or is the solution provided here is applicable?
The sgs2 was unbranded aka international version.
Thanks in advance.
Flash a stock rom via Odin. That will give you a 'clean slate'. Search Intratech's firmware thread, if the links don't work search Samfirmware.com for the stock firmware you need.
Alternatively, you can get the latest firmware for the phone model/carrier/country with the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google). The firmware package you download can be flashed in Odin following the instructions in Intratech's thread.
you were the one who solved OP problems n now here you are again to help me out. Seriously, thanks.. I'll definitely will give it a try soon when i got back n I'll report back.
Thanks man.

I seem to be following you around lol not on purpose
I'd wouldn't flash a stock rom "straight off the bat" .. Only I would do that as a last resort!
Flashing the correct kernel will make the phone boot up with NO LOSS of data and all will be back to normal
Flashing a stock ROM will mean you have to start all over again.. (like we do anyway when we flash different custom roms)
So I'm not saying your wrong, just saying try a different kernel first!
Thanks Eudemony, I'll try kernel first. So it seems like there are 2 LPBs and 2 LPQs and all of them about 17 different kernels for ICS. Alright, I'll try LPQ first. But, is it okay to keep on flashing/Odin-ing each and every single of it? Any bad consequences of that? Or side effects? hehe, sounded like i'm trying out new drugs.

If it is the wrong kernel .. you know the result as you have just done that..
and thats what you are trying to fix
If its the right kernel .. everything should "magically" load back up

Seems like you're 'downgrade' your friend's S2... If AP unit then take a look at your friend's S2 box any IMEI or Warranty Card which can identified the phone origin region.. My phone AP unit no problem flashing latest open europe firmware from samfirmware website... Already rooted and no annoying yellow triangle... flash counter zero... thanks triangle away.. In your case once your friend's phone region is identified then download accordingly.. flash the correct firmware via odin... deal with triangle later.. most important ensure your friend's phone working and please avoid softbrick..
IMEI will identify aprox build date and area of release .

Seriously? I didnt know that. Actually, before upgrading his phone (lets call him Z), Y asked me to flash CM9 but then since his phone wasn't yet rooted with 2.3.4 on top, I decided to update using kies to see whats it like to have an official ics (youtube isnt enough, hehe) but to no avail. Kies told me the phones having the latest firmware even though I've updated kies to latest version.. hmmm..
