Flyer vs View: Really a difference? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Hey guys,
I just got a View and, of course, it came with HC. From what I can tell Revolutionary doesn't sport my hboot (1.14...) So I guess I'll have to register with HTC to get s-off. But, most of the threads here seen to deal with the Flyer.
What is the difference, if any, between the Flyer and the View?
Thanks,
JB

Go into the evo forums and you'll find instructions on how to root and flash hboot etc.

I have a similar/related question. If you had the option of buying the Flyer Wi-Fi and the Sprint-branded View for about the same price, which one would you pick? I am not really interested in entering a contract with Sprint, so that is not a consideration. I want to base my choice on ease of updating (perhaps rooting), and availability of ICS down the road. Any advice will be appreciated!

There is not much we can say about future updates, but I think there are more custom ROMs for the flyer. Also, if you see planning to use wifi only, you need to use airplane mode on the View, otherwise the 4g radio will drain your battery. With airplane mode, I cannot turn on Bluetooth (although others can for some reason) and the lock screen won't show shortcuts in airplane mode. Overall, I think that the flyer is a better choice, though I still love my View.

Flyer already has working ics ports, but not everything is working. As far as the comparison between the two, for me, 32 gb view vs 16 gb flyer, black on the view looks better than the flyer, yes there is more flyer support in the forum though. But going to your airplane mode part, it doesn't bother me, I use it for wifi only and can enable Bluetooth even with airplane mode on, I disabled the activation screen after boots, so that's another issue down the drain. It pretty much came down to the price & storage to be honest, for me that is. Got my view for $260 NIB, options for the flyer were in the $300 and that wasn't even new.

There is a rumor going around that an HTC rep confirmed the Flyer would be getting ICS soon. There has been no similar news for the View. Just a consideration.

Just to put this out there, but a 3G Flyer will have a greater resale value than the View due to the limited capability to use it on multiple cariers. If just comparing a WIFI FLyer to View for me you still go Flyer because there is more development.

I have the view (Wifi Only) I do not use airplane mode.
I downloaded Anycut (Free from the market)
I created: New Shortcut -> Activity -> Tablet Info on my home screen.
Press that and choose turn off radio. Done.
The drawback is that you must turn off the radio each time you reboot the device. But it's 2 taps now. Tap the shortcut, Tap "Turn off radio".
(This is stock Rooted HC)
Wifi only users: The Flyer is certainly a better choice at the exact same price point. But at $229 for a view and $300+ for a flyer.. I'd take the View... Spec wise, they are identical. (This assumes the Pen is not included with either device)

I'm faced with a similar situation- used 3g 32gb flyer vs. Sprint view.
I've been searching reviews and trying to search boards- but I've found a lot of incorrect data.
I've read the 3g flyers are micro sim not proprietary USB jacks... I'm thinking that's wrong and it is the standard HTC flyer connection?
I've also heard only the view has altimeter and barometer and dedicated GPS? Again, I wonder if that comparison meant to say compared to wifi flyer vs. 3g...
A. Can the US 3g flyers all be sim unlocked? (I think it's a us cellular one)
B. View comes with GPS hardware and has a messaging app- does it need a 4g data paid account for the mesaging or GPS antenna to work, or if you have a sprint phone can you view sms on the tablet AND the phone simultaneously? (would love that-I'd buy it just for this) and will the GPS antenna still improve location when connected to wifi?
C. any other differences hardware / software for either?
I do plan on rooting either- any known issues of the two I should be aware of?
Any differences between the 2 in Honeycomb? (Kinda assuming they're still on GB... but I'll find out soon enough)

[Q] 3G & WiFI OR WiFi only?!?

I like the sound of the Flyer but am thinking of which to get...
I already have a Desire HD so can use it as a wireless hotspot so was thinking of getting the Flyer in the WiFi only version but I'm put off a little by it only being 16Gb where as the 3G enabled is 32Gb!
Any thoughts on the 'Watch' app???
Basically I'm not sure and am seeking help and your thoughts on the subject...
Hard to say but I was thinking the same thing you are. I have a Tmobile data plan so the Euro 3G flyer would've worked for me. I can tell you why I chose the wifi only model and maybe that will help.
The 3G model is super expensive so that was the main reason i didn't get it. I figured that with the wifi only version i can just get a hotspot device and save money on future devices too. Now that being said the 3G model can act as a hotspot too...
Sorry. I'm betting that wasn't much help. I think you will be happy either way.
I got the 3g one mainly down to that the only one they had loving it, can't wait till root, so I can play with phone.apk

[Q] Should I buy a HTC Evo View or HTC Flyer?

I am looking to purchase an HTC Flyer, but I noticed I can get a new HTC Evo View for nearly the same price on eBay. I have no need or interest in Sprints network (Verizon customer) and plan on using this only with WiFi or with my Verizon LTE MiFi.
So for nearly the same price point for new hardware is it worth it? Can I just install a custom WiFi ROM on my Evo View or do I need to use an Evo View custom ROM for HC?
Thanks again.
I would buy the View even if I was not interested in the Sprint functionality. The View has 32GB of internal storage + you can ad a 32GB card. Having the the 3G/4G radio gives you built in GPS and you run navigation apps that have precached data.
IF GPS and memory don't interest you, the Flyer does have more devs behind it and there are more ROMs for it.

What the other guy said, plus you cannot install a Flyer ROM on View, or a View ROM on the Flyer. The View just got a burst of development activity with more ROM's, HC, and stuff.
Thanks guys, I pulled the trigger and got the Evo View New Factory Sealed for $295. I am hopeful that Dev support will increase given the discount it had recently. All in all 32GB of storage was the big part for me and HC is out and there is ROM development happening.
Thanks for the feedback. It was tough deciding, but the HTC Flyer prices for new and even used are reaching $300 on eBay so for the same cash but more memory. I am already to root it and install the script that kills the 3G/4G radios hopefully that doesn't kill the GPS portion. Still if it does oh well I have in car Nav anyways and a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon.

3G/4G and GPS are the two independent things.
Unless you are talking about AGPS.
Still:
Any offline app such as CoPilot or Sygic will use built-in (excellent btw) GPS receiver on the View.
Regardless of 3G/4G.

Yes I know 3g/4g is different then GPS but the 3G radio has a GPS receiver built into the chip. All modern radios include GPS. Just like how Bluetooth is included on wifi chips. Thats how the hackers were able to get Bluetooth working on the Nook Color. B&N just did not solder in an antenna for it which is why it has such crappy range.

The Flyer has built-in GPS as well. In order for any Android device to be approved by Google to have official access to the Android Market and Google apps, one of the requirements is that it has GPS.
That said, the View is the better buy in my opinion. It has everything the Flyer has and more. Plus, development is really picking up.

[Q] Disable the Phone Radio

Does anyone know of any way to disable the phone radio WITHOUT that stupid "flight mode" or whatever? In Windows Mobile, I had a Comm Manager and I just had to press a button when I wanted to turn off the phone without any stupid flight mode crap, and this is one of my biggest complains about Android. Surely SOMEBODY made software or something to do this.
Puzzled.

Whats wrong with airplane mode? It should allow wifi and bluetooth to work even when in airplane mode.

Yes, somebody did.
It's a small yet promising company, you might have heard of them. They call themselves "Google".
What exactly is the problem with Airplane Mode? Are you afraid of air travel?
Even so, you know that you can use airplane mode on land too, you don't have to actually get on a plane every time you want to disable your phone's radio, right?
FYI, on Windows Mobile, that button in Comm Manager was in fact an -sit tight!- airplane mode button.
iR¡[email protected]!* via Tapatalk
What do you have against Airplane Mode? That's by far the easiest way to toggle the radio.
The other way would be to open your dialer, dial "*#*#4636#*#*" (INFO), select Phone Information, scroll down, and press the "Turn off radio" button. Much easier than toggling Airplane Mode.... right?

Maybe instead of accusing people of trolling, you should try to explain the "PROBLEM". Because quite frankly the way you put it, no one can understand what is wrong. You want to disable radio and that is EXACTLY what flight mode does. Period.
So what exactly is your problem?

If you want to turn off the radio, you switch airplane mode on.
Why don't you want to do that????????
We are trying to understand what you don't like about airplane mode since the only thing it does is exactly what you ask for: it turns off the radio.
Let me put this another way:
What if I make a thread and asked, "Does anybody know a way to switch my phone off without using that stupid on/off button?"
Would you be able to help me then?
And if you think this is trolling, keep it like this and you're in for big surprises...

Can you point me to where you have explained NUMEROUS times in this thread about flight mode denying access to ALL radios? I looked back through it and only ever see you mentioning the phone radio, and your strange (and misinformed) aversion to Airplane Mode.
Airplane Mode does not restrict access to all radios. Yes, it will turn them all off when it is first enabled, but you can then turn on the ones you want - bluetooth, wifi, etc.
I used this trick while I was deployed last year - I couldn't access some items in the Market due to where I was and what carrier I was on. I would enable Airplane Mode, turn the Wifi back on, and be able to access those items on the Market once more.
You're welcome.

Don't try to reason with insanity.
We were somehow expected and obligated to deduct "turns off all radios" from the characterisation "crappy".

Please stop flaming each other.
I actually second that ability.
And, lo and behold, there is substantial difference between that dreaded airplane mode and just turning off the GSM radio. AND in WinMo there was actually separate control panel applet that was dedicated solely to controlling GSM module. And I had at least 3 WinMo devices with both stock and custom roms and I think it was essential.
The difference is, that when you switch airplane mode on it disables both bluetooth and wifi (I like to call it 'autistic mode'), so then you have to enable them back. To 99% of ppl it's not a problem but for me - I've faced at least a dozen times situation when someone kept calling me when I was trying to operate remote machine through SSH on WiFi, knowing that after disconnect the machine will reboot. I haven't got time to enter the INFO code between the calls, all I wanted was to pull down the notification pane, switch tab to quick settings and turn of GSM. But no... I hope you get the picture?
Actually, very simple app that forces the INFO code and issues radio on/off command would be enough. So - does any body has information about such app?

Considering this thread has been dormant since February we have stopped flaming each other... anyhoo.
Check out the latest Tasker beta. It includes a function that allows you to select which interfaces will be affected by Airplane Mode. Set it so that only the cellular radio is impacted and you can easily toggle Airplane Mode on and off without affecting your Wi-Fi connection. I believe there are also other apps available in the Play Store that will function similarly.

I liked that too. Back on the Diamond, I had the corner softkey mapped to being the shortcut to the good old fashioned Comm Manager. One program let you control the phone, bluetooth, and WiFi radios from one screen without any "flight mode" bull. I don't usually pay for Android programs, but I'm almost at the point where I'd say I'd pay for something like that.

Not trying to dis your suggestion, but what is it with Android users and their attachment to FLIGHT MODE?!?!?! Why can't there be a button that lets you turn on and off just the phone radio, just like there is for bluetooth and wifi and even GPS?! Still on the inferior GSM networks? Try Sprint and buying a used SERO plan - they come with unlimited data, unlimited messaging, unlimited roaming, unlimited night/weekend/m2m voice, and 500minutes of general voice. To get the $30 rate, you do need a device older than a TP2, but if you can figure out how to clone the ESNs and settings, it is so worth it. I've saved over $100 in just the last three months versus one of Sprint's comparable "fresh new" plans; SERO's the stuff
Nice guide though, you might just have inspired me to do one like it for the Epic side of the forums.

I guess the "attachment" is simply because that is the only way built into the system to toggle the cellular radio. That's how it was designed, and that's how it is used. As I mentioned, using the latest Tasker you can control which radios are actually affected by "FLIGHT MODE?!?!?!". If you like, you can make it so that Airplane Mode only impacts the cellular radio. Add an Airplane Mode toggle widget to your home screen, and BAM - you've got a one-click solution for toggling the cellular radio. Is this not what you're after?

I like the flexibility afforded by GSM networks, and Sprint (at least around me) has very little coverage and even less data speed. I've saved over $150 in just the last three months on T-Mobile prepaid It's good to know that the CDMA-using folks aren't SOL though when it comes to cheap service. I get asked frequently either in threads here or on G+ what options CDMA users have, so I may have to send those inquiries your way. At the least, let me know if you put together a "CDMA service on the cheap" guide.

Sprint is admittedly the weaker CDMA carrier with less signal in less places and a terrible company that manages network upgrades and stuff like that, but most of their plans include unlimited roaming on Verizon, so then you really end up with access to the most towers out of anybody since actual Verizon customers aren't always given the opportunity to roam onto Sprint. I live in a place with Verizon and no Sprint and during the season, I commute to one of those rare places where there is Sprint and no Verizon, so this is one of the only ways to make service work for me. CDMA has slightly slower 3G speed and can't have voice and data connected simultaneously, but from what I've read and seen, it just seems to be the more robust network, requiring fewer towers and less battery use from the users' phones. Around me, all the places that Sprint lacks, TMobile lacks, if not more. There was a point where I was tempted to get an HD2 and bite the GSM bullet, but their service (and I think lack of roaming on that $30 plan if I remember correctly) held me back from doing it.
I mean, there's a time and place for everything, and the TMobile $30 plan is probably good for a lot of people who live and commute where TMobile's network is at its strongest. Those people will have faster data and be able to use voice and 3G at the same time, which just goes to show that there's a tradeoff for everything. I guess it just depends on your situation. There's always a way to save for everyone, even in this economy.
Thanks.

[Q] Sporadic 4G LTE on Rezound - Possible Fix?

I scanned this forum before creating this post and I'm pretty sure there isn't one already out there but please don't flame me if there is. I couldn't find any and I spent a good 30 minutes last night, trying to find something like this.
I purchased a used HTC Rezound recently but was unable to get 4G LTE to stay ON. I surfed various forums for a possible fix but couldn't find anything that I hadn't already tried.
This morning, I think I might have found a work-around. Here's what I did.
After activating the line and being able to get sporadic 4G LTE signal on the device, I went into the wifi settings on a hunch that maybe some unexplicable interaction was happening between wifi and the 4G radio. Wifi kept wanting to turn itself on and I kept fighting it by turning it off.
I located my home network and clicked 'forget network'. Once I did that, I went back to make sure wifi was OFF and that Mobile (data) was ON and WHAMMO!! Immediately, the 4G LTE indicator popped back on and I've been rocking 4G for about 2 hours now, without a single blip. I've watched an entire episode of 24 on Netflix in an area of my house where I've confirmed that I have a weak signal and still, no problems at all.
So my Question is this: Is there any other way to disable wifi without having to 'forget' the network when I want to use wifi? (Other than what might seem obvious by turning wifi OFF when I know that doesn't get rid of the 4G dropouts).
It's really only an inconvenience at this stage. All I'd have to do to connect is re-enter the password and since I don't use wifi when I'm at home because I have Unlimited Data, it's not really a big deal but it just seems that the OS on this phone was purposely designed in a way to take people OFF the 4G network when their phone is 'familiar' with a wifi system they're near.
======================== UPDATE ====================
There is no issue with the phone. The issue was an activation issue and I was able to eliminate the problem by trial and error. It turns out, the way I was able to get the device to connect had to do with re-seating the SIM. Once I did, the phone has been flawless in connectivity to both 4G LTE and wifi regardless of the combination of wifi settings. I hope this is useful to anyone reading the thread.
Is your Rezound stock or custom?
LTE will disable when WiFi is activated, most LTE phone does this by design. I have experienced where my Rezound's WiFi would want to turn on automatically on the clean rom, re-flashed and everything was good.
I personally never had issues with my Rezound. If fact, the Rezound has one of the best radios to date. The fact that HTC integrated the antenna into the battery case housing is what makes it a strong contender for receiving radio waves..

Go in advanced settings wifi settings (menu advanced settings)and disable the automatically turn on wifi setting. (Not exactly sure what its called as I hate sense and I'm not running it) but ull see it in advanced settings and then when u want to actually use wifi just enable wifi.
Problem solved

Well, I'm on stock ICS but rooted with S-OFF. The wifi, even when OFF kept wanting to turn ON by itself when I wanted it to stay on 4G. The only way I could get the phone to stay on 4G was to 'forget' my home network.
All is well now. Weird huh?

The Rezound has a poor shield on the 4g radio chip which causes interference in music. So, logically if stuff can get out, then wifi can come in and mess it up.
Dude read what I said and it will never automatically turn on again.
That's the reason it kept automatically turning it on. And if u haven't done what I said then regardless of you thinking its fixed it WILL turn on again by itself.

There's no such setting that I can find within the settings and I know which setting you're referring to. I saw it before on my Thunderbolt but for the life of me, I can't find it on the Rezound's menus. Anywhere. I looked several times. I'm pretty sure it's there. I just can't find it so the only way I could get the 4G to stay on and not have wifi automatically connect was to 'forget' the wifi network.

Found the menu. Still haven't gotten used to the four lines at the bottom of the scrern being the menu.
Here it is. Which setting would it be? I wasn't launching any apps when the problem appeared where wifi kept eanting to turn on. I just powered up the phone and couldn't get 4G.

[Q] I need SVDO: HTC EVO LTE or Samsung S3

I'm a Sprint user in dire need of the SVDO feature, simultaneous voice and 3G data.
I am searching for a phone I can buy on eBay at a decent price to tide me over for up to 6 months, so that I can preserve my upgrade for something like the Samsung S4 or similar later this year. The HTC EVO LTE sells for $100-150 cheaper than the Samsung S3 on average. I would be inclined to get the EVO LTE if I could snatch one up for sub $200 (many are selling this cheaply already), but I would like some input from current users.
The main reason I would get either the EVO LTE or S3 is for simultaneous voice and 3G data. I spend a lot of time on the road and it's a feature I am very reliant on.
Some of the questions I have are:
1. Does the data connection maintain 3G at all times, or does it knock back to 1x? (Forgive me, I'm not familiar with the tech behind SVDO to know if this is possible.)
2. Is there a source for replacement batteries at a fair price (realizing it takes a little know-how to replace the battery on this device)?
3. Would you suggest I pony up the extra $100-150 to get the Samsung S3, based on your experience?
Thank you for your input.

They are both great phones ... If you are planning to upgrade soon either will do the job well. 3g/4g stays consistent on a call and will not drop to 1x unless their is bad signal. Only issue you will have is battery life which both are roughly the same but one has a removable battery and the other doesn't. Jellybean did wonders for the EVO imo very smooth I have had no issues. I have owned the s3 and I loved it just as much but I love the build one the EVO so my wife has the s3 now.

So it can revert to 1x? Is there a way to force it to remain 3G only?
I had a Touch Pro 2 and I could force it to remain EVDO connection and never revert to 1X (this prevented any phone calls or texts from arriving, but it was nice if you needed to keep the connection fast).

It will stay on 3g all the time or 4g all the time unless you are in an area with ****ty connection you can't force a ****ty connection to get better... The towers controll what connection you will receive.
Edit: you will not loose conection if you get a call also if you are downloading something it will not stop from downloading while on a call

You can't force it to remain 3G if there is no EVDO signal. Hence why NORCALkID said it will revert to 1x with bad signal.
If you are always in strong 3G/4G coverage you won't have an issue. I haven't had an issue with my EVO LTE and using SVDO the rare couple of times I've actually used it. Worked great on 3G and 4G.

I guess that is a unique feature to my Touch Pro 2 (also with my touch pro, and the mogul before that). I was able to force it to cling to the EVDO signal (all the way down to one bar) and never drop to 1X.
Thank you for the replies.

How do you force that with android on the EVO LTE? Is it an app? Yeah I get 2-3 bar 3G signal, so I'm not having issues there. I force 3G fine on my current Touch Pro 2.

Yep. I kept thinking s3's would drop in price, but they are holding fast at around $350. The EVO LTE's are dropping to sub $200. If I could get a decent s3 at around $225-250 I'd possibly get that, but I don't see that happening for a few months at least.
I have a follow-up question:
On my touch pro 2, I can dial ##778# and force the radio to HDR only. On my TP2, this locks me onto the 3G signal and it never drops to 1x. This comes in handy for long downloads and any other situation that would require a constant uninterrupted data connection. The only negative being, I can't receive incoming calls or texts while it's in HDR only mode.
Will HDR only mode with the EVO LTE prevent any incoming calls or texts? I'm just wondering because SVDO is supposed to be able to handle voice calls simultaneously while 3g or 1x data is running (not interested in LTE since we don't have that in my area). I'm just uncertain how HDR only mode would affect the SVDO feature.
What happens if I have it in HDR only mode and I try to make a call out? Will it maintain the 3G connection with the voice going on simultaneously?
