[Q] Root Gingerbread > ICS, is it worth it.. yet? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I just got my HTC Glacier and was contemplating rooting it to do ICS.
Now on gingerbread, as far as I know, you have to downgrade back to froyo just to get root before you can even begin.
Is it worth the hastle yet?
Would it be more wise to wait for the final ICS version with full camera support and other minor bugs ironed out and also maybe an easier root method not requiring the froyo downgrade?
Is that even planned in the near future? (root from gingerbread)

Go for it. The downgrade isnt tht bad.

hi
for me runs ics on SGA perfect but i dont need the camera. take a look if it is okay for you to live with bugs

I'd wait for better ICS ports, probably till CM9 release. They're quite buggy for now especially on HTC phones.

Downgrading won't be too much of a hassle since you're going to have to wipe your device anyway to flash ICS. The question is whether you mind that the ROMs are still pretty buggy and have missing functions, and that's one you can only answer yourself.

I would go for ICS it is worth it

Yea its ready for prime time

There will not be another root method for the Glacier that will not require downgrading to Froyo. The phone will not get official ICS. The only issue with ICS on the glacier is the camera, but once the CM devs figure that out, the fix well be implemented probably the same day. So even if you don't want to use ICS, you should still downgrade and root to take advantage of the great gingerbread ROM's out for that phone.

[Q] when are we getting Android 2.2 or 2.3?

does anyone know roughly when we are getting the official Android 2.2 or 2.3? I am curious...if its not any time soon, then I'll probably just root it and flash it myself. let me know. thanks
I work for verizon and just got an email, it will officially launch the 77th of Nevuary...
J/k
No one knows, I do work for big red and can tell you theres been no talk that I have caught wind of. You're best off flashing yourself. Why wait for an ota update when theres a few options that are a lot faster and cool than any official release will ever be.
Within the next 12 years sometime.

I really loved Samsung's hardware over every other thing out there. But their lack of updating has made HTC my next go to Android.
Better stock UI, unlocked bootloader, and by far faster at getting updates out. Plus cyanogenMod works on like every HTC device and that looks really nice.
Can't believe sammy f'ed up this bad on their galaxy s phones. Especially considering how many were sold.
Just root, there's barely a chance that we're going to see an official update.
With accessories sold that require 2.2 to fully function, of course there will be an official update. Why do people not understand that?
This really sucks...I was hoping to hear some good news. The upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 was definitely a noticeable improvement on the droid. I suppose I'll have to root it now.

I miss my Droid. I'm thinking of buying another one. I miss Gingerbread.
Thought I'd jump in before the lock. I was running 2.3 on my eris just fine and it also never received a official 2.2 update.(thanks kaos)
To answer the ops question, no one knows when it will be released.
Just root and flash sc 2.9.1
At this point the only thing the offical release will give us is source for better kernal mods

CM9 on HTC legend?

Is it possible to install CM9 on my HTC legend? I really want Ice Cream Sandwich on it
Didn't you already post ics alpha 2 in the dev forum?
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I just tried downloading a CM9 alpha for Legend named Cofface, hmm.
Anyone have a download link for it?
Saw a chinese link in the dev forum, but the download speed was too slow (10kb/s)
I believe there is already a rom that has ported ICS onto the legend but it has quite a few issues that have yet to be fixed, thus making it a less viable choice when finding a suitable rom/. However if you mean the CM 9 rom that will be released by Cyanogen mod team themselves, I have my doubts they are planning on making one for the legend. Keep our hopes up with the other awesome developers that are working on the roms for legend (if there still are any..)
Maybe ali ba can confirm this?
Will there be officiall CM9 for the legend?
The closest to Ice Cream Sandwich on the HTC Legend is the alpha stage rom OP posted in development section.
If your asking whether Cyangenmod would be officially releasing CM9 based on ICS soon, the answer would be no. As iirc Cyanogenmod would be focusing on processors that are newer and a bit more powerful than the HTC Legends.

pretty much
ali ba, why you don't say something about zeubea's CM9? Seems like you still think that CM9 it's impossible in our Legends.
It's funny that HTC Said that was impossible to have a working Gingerbread ROM in our Legends, and you just make the best Gingerbread ROM, and now you say that it impossible to have a working ICS ROM on our Legends, and Zeubea makes a working ROM
i didn't intend my former post to be provocative/degrading in any form. to the contrary, i am very grateful for what ali ba has done & achieved for us legend users!
i just wanted to ask if the recent progress by zeubea, in bringing ics pretty smoothly running with hw acceleration onto the legend & getting all the other hardware components pretty much sorted, could enable official cm9 support for the legend...

Tbh I doubt the cyanogen mod team would bother making an official cm9 rom for the legend since they have made it very clear that they wont support devices with low ram. But you never know, a miracle might happen

I would just like to point out Ali ba didn't actually say ics can't run on legend, if he did I must have missed that post. He said that he already made an ics port for his legend and it didn't run very good, no drivers for GPS,wifi etc and that he'd have to use froyo and/or gingerbread drivers which he didn't want to do, or release a rom that was cobbled together from hacks, or words to that effect.
I also recall that he made mention that ics he made would have been no better than an ics themed froyo or gingerbread O/S.

agreed, he just mean that he doesn't want to release anything that is half baked or fully stable, he doesn't want to hurt his reputation to release something like that. and i'm glad Zeabea shows up and take his time and afford in making ICS for our legend, and I got to say Zeabea ROM is good enough, and I can use it for daily uses what more can u ask for? if we still believe and work hard for it, anything is possible. That's why human is the dominance species for a reason. We man a lots of miracles, discovery many unbelievable things. ^^

I know what he said, and he said that, unless there's a miracle, we won't have an stable ICS ROM on our Legends.
What I tried to say is that he said we wont see an STABLE ICS ROM, I know it's possible to run all android versions on our Legend (Including Honeycomb), but the problem it's to make an stable rom.
And don't get me wrong, I like all the good work ali ba made with CM7 just because we won't pay him to do that. And if he thinks that it's impossible to have a good ICS ROM on our Legends, I respect his opinion.
official CM != stable ICS

No, he didn't. He guessed there won't be *an official CM9*, which is something different.
I'm not an expert on CM decision making, but here's my take: to be included, CM9 on the Legend would need to be stable AND high quality.
(in the bad old days, I tried several WinMo4/5/6 ROMs which were a) stable and b) awful, full of flaws and sloppy design details that would probably get an Apple dev fired).
Ali Ba's CM7.1 changed my opinion on hobby ROMs; it's so polished, I think HTC should OTA it as the official ROM for all Legend users. Thanks again.
I haven't tried zeuba's ROM yet (still too experimental for me), but I hope this will lead to a high-quality ICS ROM, too. No idea if/how/when it will be made official by CM.
(note to self: gotta send that dude a donation, he's really spending a lot of time, and making serious progress; good for all of us).
Does anyone know if something (drivers, ram,...) fundamentally compromises ICS on Legend (like "max 10 apps installable"), or could it become really slick (like ICS on One V) if a reasonable amount of work is put into it?

CM9 or Official OTA?

A small place to post your opinions to keep a conversation here lol. Well, which do you think will be delivered first? Which will you take? I prefer CM9, but most probably the ota will come first though

ay, CM9 has more root capabilities and customizability, plus ive always been a fan of CM, so im in for CM9
Well the OTA or a Amaze 4.0 leak will help with the progress with CM9.

CM9 FTW for sure!
I think OTA will arrive first, but I'm looking more forward to CM9!
CM9 for me. Although I can't wait for ICS, I can wait for a stable CM9 build. Unless another developers releases a nice ICS Sense build till CM9 becomes a daily driver.
CM9 will probably never become stable and I have not even bothered to root the phone since all I needed it for was tethering. Luckily the phone can be be tethered without the need for root.

Honeycomb update on my htc evo view question.

Sup everybody. I just did the HTC software update and now I have honeycomb 3.2. I hate the new interface and don't understand why they made such a change to it or don't give you the option to go back to the old interface.
My question is why the hell did they downgrade the sense from a 3.0 to a 1.1 on the honeycomb update? That makes no sense (pardon the pun). Anybody know why this is and is there a way to go back to gingerbread without rooting?
As far as I know Sense 3.0 was for phones running Gingerbread. Sense 1.1 was for tablets running HC. Until the unification of ICS, I guess the Sense UI had 2 development paths, phones & tablets.
Just a guess
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
I felt the same way. Rooted and downgraded back GB, prior to that I had been updated on HC for a few months. After switching back, I realized that the overall functionality of HC was much better. Using cypher custom Rom on stock kernel, plenty of free memory, quick, give it a try.
Other then that, start learning to cook up your own custom Rom, de sense it how you like. I say this cuz as you may have noticed the View's development is quite starved. We need more contributions.

Advantages/disadvantages of waiting for OTA for ICS?

I'll be honest, the Rezound is my first Android. I didn't even come looking at XDA for answers until I got tired of the OTA drama. I'm still bone stock, not even unlocked. I've been looking around and liking what I've seen. Really digging Nils Business Sense and the new Redzound theme.
With the OTA in sight, according to the latest rumors, am I better off waiting then going custom or taking the dive now and if there are any surprise developments with the OTA incorporating them after the OTA drops?

I have been hearing it's "just around the corner" since I bought mine in December! I did the leak in May and S- offed last month. My thought was that once I was s-off I could get a rom that had the official release. I have had no regrets and NilsP is an awesome Dev!

Yeah, what the other guy said. Some people would recommend doing s-off before the OTA, in case they close the exploit but I think the consensus is that we're safe. So, no rush, but might as well unlock, s-off and flash away.
Well to be honest I think the only thing you have working for you when upgrading via OTA is that shouldn't lose any of your settings...or takin the dive now with an ics leak you will have to set your phone up again. But then again what's the big deal? It's some what easy to go back to GB if you have the know how or the common sense to read instructions to root, s off revert back to GB ruu and if you are one of those people that need to return everything back to stock for exchange purposes you can even s on. Just make sure you do your homework and read all the stickys that are posted and should be good to go.
Advantages: None that I can think of.
Disadvantages: You could die of old age waiting for the OTA.
Would it be smart to wait until the ICS kernel is release and start with those roms so we don't have to use patched gb ones? Or would it not make much difference having the ICS kernel? Sounds to me like we will have to re flash ruu files either way when ics comes out
I rooted, S-OFF'd, and installed a custom ICS ROM the second I got my Rezound. I was never really interested in the OTA update because I knew I'd go the custom route regardless. Too many ROMs out there with features that the official OTA would never have. Not just Sense 4 but plenty more. I can't really think of any advantages of bothering with Verizon's OTA unless you really want to stay stock.
