Hey guys, been out for a good minute, but I'm about to buy a new phone. I had been wanting the HTC thunderbolt, as I've had good success hacking other htc phones.
I just wanted to make sure that its a good phone for modding
If anyone has any other suggestions on what I should buy, I'll listen.
Maybe the Bionic?
I just wanna make sure theres no bs blocks or anything that will stop me from modding it to my heart's content, and that theres plenty of roms and all that out there already.
(I would do all this searching myself but ive been working 18-20hrs past few days and I need some sleep, and u guys probably allready know all this)
Thanks
Why not wait for the Galaxy Nexus? I know its not HTC, but still...
cuz i need one this week. thursday at the latest. how long till the nexus comes out?

It comes out in November 2011.
droid charge is better than the thunderbolt. they're both noticeably weaker than any modern phones, but the thunderbolt is generally regarded as a poor investment. Charge has a pretty good development community.
From the benchmarks Ive seen, the charge isn't better than it at all. But the Droid Bionic is in many ways. Mostly with it being a dual core processor, and more ram.
I went in to a Verizon store today to check em out first hand, and I'm torn between the two. I really do like htc sense, and I might eventually change it, but there are enough skins and sense based roms available to keep me happy. However, the Bionic scored like 2400 on quadrant, and its a bit snappier.
But it doesn't have sense on it, oh, and it also doesn't quite have the "quality" feel to it that most HTC phones have. its a bit too light and feels a bit like cheap plastic. idk. but its definitely faster.
Any suggestions guys?
Thunderbolt or Droid Bionic?
Does the bionic have a big modding community?
Reason I didn't mention the bionic is that not only does it not have a good devoloping community, rooted Verizon motoblur devices (not ROM'd ones tho) have a really bad track record of getting majority screwed up every time there's a software update. It also has a horrible looking pentile display.
Oh, and it has a locked bootloader too, so don't expect a lot of ROMs for quite a while.
EDIT: actually, i take that back - the bionic apparently has CM7 moving along very nicely.
Back in November of 2009 I was done dealing with AT&T's horrid network in Chicago so I gladly paid an ETF, sold my iPhone 3G, and snapped up a Motorola Droid. It was a phenomenal device that I knew I had to own once I played with it. I bought it the day it came out. Two years later it is dying a slow death. So after months of waiting, I went to a VZW store today and tried a Galaxy Nexus for myself since it felt like the logical "upgrade" from the OG Droid. It was very underwhelming with its mediocre build quality (too plasticky) and ICS just didn't blow me away.
I'm really at a crossroads on which phone to select because I feel like nothing out these days can hold a candle to my OG Droid. I'm even looking outside of Verizon at this point even though I'm nervous about that being a "downgrade" in terms of network quality.
The only thing that strikes my fancy at the moment is the Skyrocket on AT&T. Tried one at the store and the phone felt solid. Worried their network will suck just as I remember but an old college friend who is a store manager for them said they've really made some big strides lately.
Still considering the Galaxy Nexus merely because Verizon's network has been so good, and because so many people I know are on Verizon. The phone itself is pretty forgettable and not worth the price, especially since I'd need the extended battery.
The Droid 4 is coming very soon but I absolutely loathe Motoblur. I hope the phone is still metal+glass instead of the Bionic's cheesy plastic. It's the only other phone I'm actually interested in seeing.
So, hivemind, what course do I need to take? Priorities in a phone are build quality, RF performance (call quality and ability to hold onto weak signals), and battery life. AOSP or ease of flashing a non-bloated ROM is the other must-have.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
are u looking for performance or want phone for music and net?
If you like the feel of solid build quality you should check out an HTC. Verizon has the Rezound, but it is not rooted yet. AT&T has some good ones as well, such as the Vivid. HTC usually has a solid dev community as well.
have you looked at the droid 3? Since you liked the Driod it is the logical upgrade.
So I no longer have a DX2 (stolen and irretrievable) and I'll have to be replacing it with something else, any good suggestions for phones off-contract (not upgrade eligible until December) possibly used?
Thanks for any suggestions, been a good time using the DX2 with all of the help from here but unfortunately a new, and hopefully not as handicapped, phone is on my horizon.

The HTC Rezound has an unlocked bootloader so that might worth looking into. Of course, the Nexus and S2 are beasts and should be considered.
I myself have been looking at the Galaxy Note as its perfect for my hands and great for Netflix and gaming.

I'm really leaning towards the HTC Rezound as my next phone, but I've heard good things about the Galaxy Nexus as well.
The one thing holding me back from the Nexus is the lack of an SD Card slot. I have a 32gb class 10 MicroSD card that houses my music and also serves currently as my X2's internal SD card, so my apps are installed on that as well. So, I'm leaning heavily towards the Rezound.
Depending on how much you plan to spend..
From non-4G phones (cheaper), Droid Inc 2 can be had on CL for less than $100 once in a while. It was best phone that I had so far even though on the paper X2 is faster with dual core and all, with 756MB of ram and probably the cheapest phone among that are guaranteed (so far) to receive ICS, it SHOULD hold you over until your upgrade comes up IMHO. (It has unlocked BL, so PLENTY of ROMs to pick over - Except MIUI unless you want to stick with old version.)
You still want a phone to communicate with- stay w/ Moto!
After researching further, I see more pluses with the Rezound over the Galaxy. Both have unlocked bootloaders, but the extra storage I could get with the Rezound over the Galaxy is a big plus. Also, the Rezound has a better rear camera (8mp vs. 5mp).
I know the Nexus comes with 16gb or 32gb internal memory, but no SDCard expansions lost. With the Rezound, you get 16gb internal memory plus with my 32gb card, I'm looking at a total of 48gb of memory. Can't beat that.
I do like that the Nexus also has the soft keys on the screen, while the Rezound doesn't as it uses the hard keys, but I can overlook that. I guess the only thing is, the screens seem smaller than my X2's, but the resolution is better.
I'll just have to wait and see when my upgrade comes, but it looks like I'm leaning towards the Rezound. As it is, I already told Motorola that I won't be purchasing their products anymore, so I need to hold true to my word, unless they unlock the bootloaders.
Also, even though the Nexus comes with ICS on it, the Rezound has already been confirmed as getting ICS, so I can wait knowing it will get it eventually.
The big selling point on either one though is definitely the unlocked bootloader.
+1

Dude, I am going to have to read every post you make... So far, with your research, I am now leaning towards an HTC. I WAS thinking about a Samsung, because of the Super Amoled screen, but, now... I'm leaning toward the Rezound... Thanks for the legwork! However, my upgrade comes in 1.5 years. Damn it.
Ciao!
I appreciate all of your responses. For a week I was stuck on my Blackberry 8330 (torture) until I was able to travel to Chicago this morning and just picked up a new Incredible 2.
Thanks to this whole community for your support on the X2. While I had it, it made it tolerable, and hopefully now I'm off to a better place. Good luck to all of you.
Yea, but you still can't beat the support directly from Google for any future updates. It's nice to get a Galaxy Nexus and know that you have a reference phone.

Thanks for sharing. I am very curious about how the Dinc 2 sounds in phone use and radio reception in contrast to the x2?
Same as the OP i have left the X2 my self its still in my house just another family member is using it. I wish you guys luck i hope dragonz gets ics fully running on this phone as for me i went and got an iPhone 4S for a bit cause the x2 kinda killed android for me ill probably get another android phone in a year or so but i just wanna take a break sooo long guys ill poke in every now and then

I can answer that, as I also have had both phones. So the dx2 has better 3g and more bars everywhere. Sometimes I don't get 3g in places where I used to but I've never had a dropped call and call quality is mostly the same.
The freer culture of htc and the dinc2 is totally great, and worth the loss of service.
Another interesting thought - some dinc2'ers took copper wire and attached it to the 3g antenna to extend the antenna and reported better service, but I was hesitant to to do that.

well I don't know about the inc 2 but I'm sitting here with my buddies original incredible, and it is pulling nearly the exact same speeds and signal as my x2, and I've made calls to my house phone using each of them and got the same quality in call sound/reception, and this is with around -90 » -95 dbm signal strength,

One of my friends whom I talk with very frequently on the phone thought I had her on speaker the first time I called her from this phone. I haven't personally "tested" them against each other per se but that was a kind of odd first reaction.
As for radio reception, it appears it is down versus that of the X2 but I am having much better luck with wi-fi connectivity thus far. I use Google Voice for everything and my texting has been more than happy to take to the wi-fi. I will likely be testing GrooveIP on it soon to see how well that works; it was absolutely awful when I tried it on my X2.
I have the rezound currently and I would say I am very pleased with the phone. I came from a bionic after 2 X2 insurance replacement phones for my original X. The verizon reps seemed to be pushing the razer as the one to get. I felt I needed something non-moto for a change. The bionic was buggy to say the least. Verizon treated it as a warranty issue and I am happy to stay with them as my carrier.
Staying with Verizon meant getting a razer, galaxy nexus, rezound, or waiting for something else. Every rep at the store seemed to have the opinion that if I thought the bionic was buggy I should steer clear of the galaxy. I just couldn't bring myself to get another moto product. Overall, I've been happy with moto products and will probably purchase their products in the future. Just felt like trying something different after the og droid>droid x>droid x2>bionic.
I spent a decent amount of time checking out all three phones next to each other at a Verizon store. All three have great looking screens. The nexus and the rezound benefit from 720 resolution, whereas the razer has qhd resolution. I played a hd trailer for "300" on YouTube simultaneously on all three for comparison. The blacks were more black on the amoled nexusand razer screens. But the details were most crisp on the rezound. I believe the pixel density on the rezound is currently the highest available on any device, even the the new iPad. The rezound has a dual core 1.5Ghz processor, a gig of ram, an sd card slot and a removable battery. Why any phone lacks a removable battery and an sd card slot is beyond me.
I've been happy with my rezound in every way except one, accessories. At best buy there is a great selection of cases for the nexus and razer is extensive. Multiple brands and colors. Cases, batteries available for the rezound, zero zip nada. Certainly not a deal breaker for me, but something to think about.
I have been a die-hard Moto fan since the original Droid, they make great devices and I've never had any issues with the ones I've owned, which include the Droid, DX, DX2 and Bionic. I also owned the Dinc (great phone), Charge (only thing great about the phone was the screen, but other than that it was total garbage), Tbolt (for a short while, then gave it to the girlfriend) and now the Rezound.
I'll be honest, I do love the Rezound. It's S-off'ed, rooted, ROM'ed, everything. It's fast and has a wonderful screen. I was surprised at the call quality as well, my biggest grip with both previous HTC phones was the call quality. I currently have a Sense 4.0 ROM from Newt and it flies. However, the phone does have issues of it's own.
The screen is not durable at all, I actually had to go and buy a quality screen protector after I managed to scratch the screen the first day, never had any issues with GG-equipped devices.
The build quality isn't exactly great compared to even the Tbolt, that thing was rock solid, so was the Droid and DX.
The red capacitive buttons are nice, but I've had to take the phone apart and recolor the LED bulbs red because the buttons turned pink (common issue), and it's hard to run a nice theme other than red because the colors conflict easily.
The recessed buttons on the top and sides are difficult to press at times, which can be frustrating especially with a case on the phone.
Bluetooth is almost non-functioning in ICS. It ran fine on GB with my Mitsubishi Lancer's stock audio system over bluetooth, but ever since ICS it doesn't work at all. I've tried the Tbolt, Droid and a friend's Razr, they all work perfectly. The Rezound, not so much. And after how well the phone runs on ICS, I can't go back to GB and be content with it.
Now, the Bluetooth is kind of important because I am in the process of being hired for a law enforcement agency in the DC area, and it requires me to drive into DC everyday and it's a hands-free zone. I'd like to be able to stream my music library and calls in my car, but currently I can't and that's a problem. Also, with this possible job opportunity comes the need for durable equipment, and I'm sorry to say the Rezound does not feel like it would hold up to a drop on the hard ground even with a good case on it. I also need something that has excellent call quality, excellent radios and very reliable. Out of the three possibilities that Verizon currently offers, the Razr seems like it would be perfect. After owning a Samsung and being unhappy with it, as well as seeing the horror from the Gnex, I won't even consider the GS3. My girlfriend even had the Fascinate and she hated it as well.
It's hard to consider getting a different device that isn't as dev-friendly, and doesn't have as nice of a display (that 720p has grown on me a lot). Granted, I played with both the Razr and Rezound at several stores and the experiences were pretty much the same at each store. They're both great phones in the end, but despite the locked internals, I've always had good luck with my Motorola devices. The screen isn't all THAT bad on the Razr, it beats the crap out of the nasty screens they put on the Bionic and X2.
I guess I'm just conflicted with a decision to either keep the Rezound, or go for a Razr Maxx. I know more phones are coming soon, but I need to get something that will last me a while. The modding of kernels, radios, OS's and whatnot is fun, but time consuming and free time is something that I won't have much of anymore. As long as I can theme the Razr, make it faster and be sure it has excellent wireless connections, I'll be happy.
Sorry for the long post...
The MAXX is a great phone. With the official ICS having been released last week, it's just gotten better. In the end it's entirely personal preference though. The screen is perfectly fine and clear for all practical purposes. Under minimum brightness settings there may be dark blotches visible in black areas of your screen, but this is extremely common and due to the screen type. It doesn't indicate any problems with the device nor will it be visible under screen brightnessess above like 15%. Personally I say go for it :good:
I have first hand experience on this topic, so I will dive in.
I too owned a Rezound and was reasonably happy with it. But ever since I got the Rezound (about 6 months ago), I could never understand or get over how sluggish the phone felt to me. With or without being rooted, GB was extremely choppy on homescreen scrolling. Way too much lag for the specs of the phone. So it was obviously a Sense thing.
I of course rooted it right away. And I can tell you that I tried every single ROM available for that phone and none of them ran the phone like I felt it should. That was GB, ICS and 4.0 ROM's. The Ultrasmooth tweak smoothed out the homescreen lag, but the overall phone felt sluggish too. Just in opening apps and all of that.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the phone was super slow or anything. But just slower than what it should be with the specs.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I sold my Rezound and picked up a Maxx locally off someone. I'm not looking back. This phone is great! Battery life is all it's cracked up to be and everything just runs smoother. Everything is snappier compared to the Rezound.
In the end, I would highly recommend making the switch. Just my opinion.
Feel free to ask me any questions.

Awesome, I was hoping a former Rezound owner would chime in.
You know, I completely understand what you're saying about the sluggishness. While the phone isn't slow by any means, it does indeed have some "twitching" at times, and I want to say it has something to do with either the 720p resolution, the graphics chip, or both. Perhaps it's the fact that Sense is embedded into the OS and there's no way to run AOSP/AOKP as of right now, and we all know that Sense is a resource hog. There's no way the 1.5ghz dual core processor is slow, it's quick to open apps and whatnot, but your right it's definitely a little sluggish at times. And I understand no phone is perfect. Even the iTurd gets hung up as well. I even loaded Go Launcher up on the two test phones I mentioned in my first post, and the Razr just seemed to rock right through it with hardly any lag or sluggishness, whereas I can see it on the Rezound.

Yeah, you're right. It's not that the Rezound was a slow phone, but it felt like it which always irritated me. Sense is probably most of the culprit.
Just FYI, if you get a Razr or Maxx. Try Launcher Pro. This phone absolutely flies with that launcher!

I will take that into consideration should I choose to buy one.
Good news is my girlfriend was eligible for an upgrade yesterday, right before this whole "share everything" went live, so she was able to preserve her unlimited data. Me, not so lucky anymore for discounted upgrades. Anyway, she decided to get a 16gb Razr in blue, so once it arrives I will be testing the crap out of it to see how well it does, especially bluetooth. If everything goes well, then I will fork out the money for one and sell the Rezound.

Just FYI about bluetooth and the Razr/Maxx.....I just recently got a brand new Ford Focus with Sync and MyFord Touch and the Maxx works beautifully on bluetooth with the system. So I think you will be good on the bluetooth front.
But please note that I am still on Gingerbread. Things can change on ICS, but I highly doubt it.
Check the sig.
The Razr is the better phone of the two. If the bootloader was unlocked I would say the Maxx is w/out a doubt the best phone to date....overall.
You guys are making my wallet run and hide, lol. But I do appreciate the input. Hopefully the gf's Razr arrives tomorrow so I can play around with it.

I too have used both phones. I can tell you that the RAZR MAXX wins hands down. IMHO. I bought the MAXX on it's release day and bought a Rezound off CL. I just switched my SIM card (had to use an adapter) between the two. Didn't care for the way the Rezound was built. From the recessed buttons, raised screen frame, poor battery life, and Sense. The only thing I did like was the unlock ring, that would allow you to camera/text/phone/unlock. I really like that Moto kinda copied this with the new unlock key on ICS. Don't know if you buy from CL, or pay full retail, but you will be happy with the RAZR MAXX.

Yep the Razr should work excellently on bluetooth as it has BT 4.0 capability. Awesome phones...
Bought my girlfriend a Maxx several months ago, she loves it. It works well with Bluetooth in my Mazda 3. She is a medical student, spend all day in a hospital, and if you work in a hospital (i do too) you'll know that your phone is constantly reaching for a signal through thick walls all day. She comes home with 70% battery after 12-16 hour shifts. She has a Charge previously, horrid horrid phone, i rooted it, but that thing was beyond help. With her Maxx, she doesn't even want me to root it or change it bc she loves it so much. No ICS yet, but I'm sure it will just be a better experience for her. Personally, i wouldn't take anything over my Galaxy Nexus, especially now that I'm running Jellybean, and i recommend the Nexus, pure Google is the way to go, this is my first Nexus device, and i will always have one now. If i could keep the slim profile of my phone and get the 3300 mah battery, it would be perfect, battery life my only complaint. Point of my ramblings i guess, personally, i recommend the Galaxy Nexus, but the Maxx is a hell of a phone, solid build, comparable specs, astonishing battery life. It's all personal choice, but if i was in the market for a phone right now, the Maxx would be my number 2 pick, hand down.

Well I don't want the GN simply because my experience with Samsung phones has been horrible, both the Charge and my gf's Fascinate. Plus, I really didn't like the call quality from any of the GN's I tested, and the fact that I can't use my 64gb SDcard is a huge no-no. I'm also looking for something great on battery life, which is why I'm considering the Maxx. But thank you though!
No problem, like i said, not dogging the Maxx at all, if there was no nexus, i would have the Maxx with out question. Good luck, with ICS, it will be a great phone.

Well, the girlfriend's Razr showed up yesterday, did some testing on GB and then installed ICS. Man, I didn't think this phone would be this great. The bluetooth was great on GB, connected up to my car with no problems, and it actually got better with ICS.
I think I'm sold on a Maxx now.
After dealing with the incompetent jackasses at the Verizon store at Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, VA, I decided just to call customer service and buy one. Should be here Monday or Tuesday.

I REALLY like my local Verizon store. It's this rare gem on a beach of fools gold. I've bought all my phones there for over 10 years. But, they simply couldn't help me with a new phone this time. I was nearing the upgrade date, but was going to be out of town when it hit and I wanted a new phone before I left. No dice. Then, Verizon had a sale on all 4G LTE smart phones on their website. $100 off. This was actually better than waiting for my upgrade discount. I went to the store, said I'd rather buy from them than online and asked if they could match it- they said no way. So, I bought it online, get it 2 days later, activated it myself with no drama and was good to go.
Hey all,
Last week I decided to give Sprint and the iPhone 5 a go.
I don't recommend either.
So I'm back with Verizon, still have unlimited data (never actually cancelled just in case!), and I'm looking for an upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus, off-contract.
I'd like to get an HTC device, all I really want is Sense, SD Card support (coming from the GalNex, I really miss that), and I mean, decent specs. I obviously don't want to drop $300-400 on a phone that won't support Android 4.3 (yes, I know no one knows the answer to that FOR SURE, but I mean... ).
I also looked at the DNA, but its off-contract prices are STILL through the roof, plus, I like that the Dinc 4G LTE has a smaller screen size, I think the 4.7" on the GalNex was too big for me and not worth the battery woes.
So without further adieu, what do you guys think?

$160 used though, right? I'm trying to stick to new if prices permit.

I got mine, new for $250, via XDA marketplace when it still existed. This was back in November last year, if I remember correctly. You should easily get it reasonably cheaper than that off contract. But I dunno where to find new ones of these off contract at those prices. Most online places will probably only have used or kinda used ones. But keep hunting and you should get good prices.

I see a cell phone seller on eBay that has like 50 Dinc LTEs (sold like 15) for around $250, classic "New but we opened them", seems reasonable, I paid $350 for the Galaxy Nexus new not even a year ago (October 2012).
Does it have that lanyard loop thing like the original Dinc had?
Also, how's the battery life? I had the Thunderbolt and the original Dinc, HTC never gave their phones good batteries, at least up through 2011. I'm not up to date on this...
And can anyone explain the Inductive Charging situation? Does the Dinc LTE have it, does it need a special cover?

I don't think it has a lanyard loop. I can't find one. I can't compare the battery life of the Dinc4G with any other 4G phone as it is my first but I think it is fair to say that I get very similar battery life as I did with my Dinc2 which was a 3G only phone. All thanks to the Snapdragon 4 which are more frugal with LTE. But then again, I am a pretty light user so don't take my word as final. On a relatively light-moderate usage (music, talk, gps for tracking my running and occasionally gps for navigation) I get a days worth of battery. I leave my phone on 4G most of the time, even if I have wifi and it doesn't kill the battery at all. It hardly uses any in downtime.
Inductive charging needs a special back cover. It adds to the thickness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDZuCyadpZs Never tried it and your mileage may vary.

yes used, all in perfect shape, the seller had it on a case all the time and was used only 2 weeks so i was very lucky, however i can still find some used incredibles on ebay for the same price, i won mine on a auction
I can't believe people actually prefer Sense. I mean, I know people's opinions differ, but pure JellyBean is just so...nice...Out of curiousity, what do you prefer about Sense over stock android?
I want to get the Moto X phone coming out. The specs aren't amazing, but it's got a pretty low price point too:

I was thinking about the Moto X, too, but I was thrown astray by the whole "lack of expandable storage" thing. I already have a Pure Google phone, I don't want another.
I've always had a soft spot for Sense. Ignoring the features and the useful widgets (HTC Sync for iTunes music syncing and fullscreen widgets), it just looks better than AOSP IMO... But I mean, with the Galaxy Nexus, AOSP/Vanilla has been my ONLY option, so I guess I'm a little tired of it.

The grass is always greener on the other side. The key advantage of a Nexus phone is timely support, though you can kiss that goodbye on Verizon. Even the Galaxy Nexus suffered horrendous waiting times for updates to roll out. I do like the Sense aesthetic to some extent, but then it does get in the way in other areas. If I were to honestly rate Sense 4.1 to AOSP 4.x and above, I say the vanilla Android has the upper hand. Granted it may seem sparse at places but it is consistent and doesn't have certain annoying features you may find on Sense. I assure you you'll get tired of sense too... But more importantly you'll start to get frustrated by lack of support, lack of kernel source leading to buggy CMs. Luckily that is not yet a major issue and we thankfully have a very stable CM 10.1.2 on 3.0.x kernel...
Speaking of Motorola X, who cares of those cutting edge specs? I used to be naive to think more is better and keep running for the best specs. But you know what, I don't care anymore. All these tech blogs care about is bleeding edge tech despite how little a majority of us need it. And they brainwash us into wasting money upgrading phones while the current phone is more than serviceable. I don't find the Moto X to have subpar specs, and for that price off-contract, that is a freaking amazing phone. I just don't know why we can't have decent 4"/4.3" phones anymore. Remember when phones were compact and all? Are these OEMs seriously planning to push the boundaries and make phones as big as the Nexus 7 in a few years? Sheesh. I am trying my best to avoid that road, but I think there aren't any decent 4"/4.3" phones anymore
Amen. I was content with the Droid Incredible, but then LTE happened, and I got the closest thing to it with LTE, the Thunderbolt. I recall the whole kernel source problem, I wish HTC would just release the source with the RUU (do RUUs still exist?).
Anyway, I looked at the Moto X rumors... It's interesting with the made in USA and customizability, but I don't want a phone that size, I want SD card support, easy sync with iTunes on a Mac (Doubletwist or HTC Sync, but neither support a Nexus or Moto phone with MTP), and support for Beats headphones in-line buttons and mic (I'm assuming...).
I wish it was cheaper than $250 new though, especially since the Moto X is supposed to be around $199 new off-contract (allegedly...hmm that seems fishy though).
