So I am on the fence on this one. Every Android device I have owned has been rooted but not being able to return the device if something should go wrong has me a little skeptical with the View.
Looking at the development section I also don't see anything that would make me jump off stock right now and not sure if that will change in the future.
Anyone else contemplating keeping it stock? I did notice you can always go back to GB from HC and then root but it would require you to use HTC unlocker. My question is, if you use HTC's unlocker can you still achieve S-OFF and load Roms, Radios, and Kernels from CWM or will it be like the EVO 3D fiasco?

Nevermind please ignore. My post below is about Flyer and OP was asking about View. Not sure what to do about view
Not accurate. You do not need to unlock to get to HC or get back from HC to GB.
1) GB to HC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358758
2) Back to GB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428104
After following instructions on second link, you are back to GB, but you are S-OFF. To go back to S-ON Follow this guide => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346200

I went about this in just about the wrong-est way possible by getting the OTA Honeycomb update before doing anything. I used the HC to GB downgrade process described in the dev forum (which requires the HTC unlock as a first step), then got S-OFF using globatron's other thread, both of which worked with little drama.
I've had no trouble flashing ROM's through CWM but haven't tried anything else (is the HC kernel source for the View even available yet?). In short, I have no regrets, but I bought the View to play with so YMMV.
I think the main thing I am looking forward to with this purchase is the rooting and the unlockable bootloader. If I decide to keep it, that will be the first thing I'm doing
I am going to stay Stock. It's a very good device as Stock and there is no need to put on a ROM as far as I am concerned.

You shouldn't return the product because you screwed up trying to modify it... this is the reason why locked bootloaders exist!

Thanks buddy, I don't need a lesson from you as to why locked bootloaders exist. I have owned over 10 smartphones in my day and have unlocked / rooted all of them with no problems. But you best be sure if I mess something up within my return period it is going back like everyone else here would do including you Mr high almighty.
Also, when Dev's work on an un-root method a lot of times they will brick a device and need to return it for another one. So will you purchase them another device so they can do you a favor and unlock your bootloader for you? I don't think so.
So after doing some research, I am thinking of rooting it but just leaving GB on it. I have seen people complain about some compatibility issues with some apps as well as the on screen buttons taking up to much screen real estate. I don't really see an advantage to going to honeycomb.
Another question, is there a way to re-root the phone back to stock after it is unrooted? If ICS comes to town, I would probably want to grab the official update...

Why? A rooted version of the official ICS update (if one every happens) would likely show up right after the official OTAs hit the airwaves. If not leaked earlier even.

I just got my Evo 3d. I had a 4g and gave that to my wife when she lost her phone. I had the 4g rooted and was running Vaelpak and loved it. I would love to root the 3d if for nothing else but to tether. As I have been able to find, the only root method for the 3d with the 1.5 H-Boot, is using the HTC method which cannot be completely undone. that is it sets a flag so that if I were to have problems and send the phone in, they would know I rooted. I have not been able to find a root method that is completely reversible. Is that right? Is anyone working on a way to root that can be reversed completely?
Bob
it unlocks the bootloader and displays "unlocked"
on the bottom of the HTCDev method it tells you how to re-lock the bootloader.
just one command in fastboot...
However, they know you rooted the instant you sign up for htcdev... so, your mileage may vary..
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
is there a way to get the HTC tool without signing up? Or is someone working on a way that doesn't' require signing up with HTC? I don't want to loose the warranty if someone is working on a better way. But if the community is happy with the HTC way and not working on another, I may go ahead and do this. But the phone is less than a week old so I am not quite ready to loose the warranty.

also, importantly, the phrase "unlocked" will change to "relocked" on the device further providing a very easy indicator to any repair tech the device was unlocked at some point in time.

Haven't seen any public statements from AlphaRevX indicating they are working on or are planning on working on a method for hboot 1.5.
The previous methods they used were patched in software 2.08 and hboot 1.5 release.
I don't doubt their capable of achieving the same results with hboot 1.5 but I have a hard time seeing this as a high priority for them as the process is very complex and difficult. In addition, the manufacturer has released a method which is good, not great, but good and much better than the alternative previously available of nothing.
Hope that helps!
Thanks. I do want to root but not sure I want to loose warranty less than a month after buying. I do not overclock so I am not worried about that. I will probably root soon, but knowing that there is no way to go completely stock once I have done it, gives me pause.
Bob
Ive done some searching and cant seem to find the specific answer Im looking for.
I have HBoot 1.5, and i was thinking of rooting by HTC's method. Im mostly concerned about what this will mean... What warranty does this void? I have Best Buy's Protection Plan, and to my knowledge they dont care if its rooted or not. but im not entirely sure... What would it mean if I root and my phone breaks?
If Best Buy will replace it, what exactly is voided?
Thanks for your guys help.
You'll be fine, best buy will still take care of ya. Go for it.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
Bestbuy doesn't have a policy, but if it is rooted, chances are you'll get a dumbass who won't replace it because it's rooted. The reason they will know this is because of the superuser app. If you ever decide to replace, go back to stock rooted, hide superuser the from apps list using a custom launcher like Launcher Pro and you'll be good.
DONT ROOT!!! You will eventually spends hours of flashing custom ROM's, Kernels and Themes. You will then be tempted to mod your phone the way you like. This in turn will cost you countless hours and headaches to make it perfect. HAHA

i was in the same boat, but i took the plunge and rooted with htc method. i doubt best buy will no what to look for if it comes down to it, but i couldn't find a way to get back to s-on with hboot 1.5 either, so guess its up to you if you decide you want to root. i know the htc method keeps your identifier number on file, but maybe that is just if you return it to the manufacturer.

Horrible comparison. Rooting your phone is more like adding a performance chip to your car that makes the car run different than from the factory, which if something happened to it, such as the engine blows because you removed the rev limiter (overclocking then your phone overheats and won't boot anymore), that would be your fault and the warranty should be voided.

I'm going to post in contrast to the bandwagon, not saying I think you should not root but posting the counter argument for your decision making process.
I'm thinking that if you need to ask what the benefits of rooting are, maybe you aren't the type of user that needs root. If you were attempting or wanting to do several things that require root access I think your question instead would have been "I am attempting to do x, y, and z but it won't let me, how do I get around this, or that". So I am thinking you aren't using your device in a way that would require root. I could of course be wrong, and I am not trying to say don't root, merely posting the counter argument against persuading you to root, because most of us here have a biased opinion to always root your device.
There are cons to root, for example the same security holes that allow the exploit to root also allow malicious software to exploit it to run on your device.

I was simply trying to figure out whats gonna be different about waiting for a different method other then HTC's. Ive only broken 1 phone in the past 6 years, and thats cus i was pushed in a lake... Not really my fault. Im not worried about hardware, but more or less when people say HTC Will know that the phone has been rooted no matter what afterwards... Not a big deal if its not gonna affect fixing my phone should i break it in the future.. (i just dont like people knowing what ive done to my electronics) As for using the root. im finally wanting to pull the trigger becasue i just moved and want tethering, as well as improved battery life. (my 4G seemed to get 25%-50% battery life after root)
Im rambling now, mostly cus my brother is distracting me and cant remember what ive written.
Im mostly just looking for peoples thoughts as far as HTC's method vs. Waiting for another actual s-off. unbeknown to HTC. I know the differences about flashing roms and what not, so just the basic question above.

There is no s-off with HTC method, so not sure what you mean when you say that you can't find a ready to get back to s-on. Even after unlocked through HTC you have s-on.
If you mean you want to put the lock back on, you fastboot the phone, type "fastboot OEM lock" with adb and you are locked again.

If you're questioning yourself, then you probably should not.
I recently rooted my amaze (unlocked bootloader first, so perm root) and then proceeded to put the BeastMod rom on the phone via recovery mode. My issue is i have been getting a lot of restarts and force closes and I want to see if i can just return to the normal root (i assume it is just stock sense or something). I would say my understanding and skills are beginner level, so if someone could give me some instructions on how to do this it would be helpful.
I have downloaded the RUU for t-mobile already and I just need to know what to do and if I need to re-lock, or unroot, or whatever.
thanks!!!

Well, I feel your pain, i was admin on another forum (not tech, but still)...so thank you for your hard work. It probably gets overlooked.
In your experience, is beastmod stable?
I have followed all the instructions and done as I was told, and it keeps crashing a lot. I read somewhere that taskkillers can do damage custom roms. Maybe that's it? Idk.

correct...you don't really have to to flash another kernel since faux's is really based on stock assuming you installed faux's kernel, you should probably go back to stock kernel...also flash recovery back to stock. search development and you'll find how to do all these.

On the contrary, you don't need to re-lock your bootloader. I installed the last OTA with the bootloader still unlocked. Maybe I'm special though.
I would probably leave it unlocked till absolutely necessary. That way I could perm root again if wanted.

Hate to spit hairs here but it actually warns you that you MAY void your warranty. If there is a physical problem or manufacturers defect there should be no reason for them to deny warranty due to unlocked bootloader.
If we go ahead and HTC Dev Unlock, and then the lte gets s=off, will we be able to either flash everything completely back to stock and get s=off, or will we be able to just achieve s=off using the the method and write over the htc dev unlock?
The question of whether we can undo HTCDev unlocking isn't really an issue, it will almost certainly be done and figured out by the time / if somebody figures out a true S-OFF method. The only real sticking point with HTCDev for most people is the fact that your phone's serial number gets recorded (and your bootloader says "relocked" if you do revert but that's something that will probably be fixed eventually).
But in the end, who knows what the future will bring? You can already RUU back to stock in every sense except the bootloader label.
My guess is somebody will get their hands on an engineering hboot sooner or later and this will all get sorted out.
My only worry is for Sprint's TEP, but I also did read somewhere that they are taking in rooted devices, so I'm guessing it shouldn't be an issue anyway?

Hi Mike, Welcome to the thread.
As a new rooter to the 3d and a long time rooter of the EVO (original) I have to say I'm finding that this is much more intimidating than it really is.
Check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813818
It was a very well thought out thread and worked smoothly. The hardest part was the wire trick and I'll be honest the most intimidating. It took me 5x before I got the timing correct with how quickly I touched the ground. Outside of that it was simple.
It's true the EVO 3d is somewhat of a pickle when it comes to gaining s-off. Just a bunch of tedious steps. But its all worth it once you gain it. At least you won't have to deal with the headache of unlocked s-on.

I am unlocked S-on and use EXT4 Touch recovery with "smart flash" It seems to work just as if you are s-off...
I mainly deal with Samsung phones as I own an S2, I was looking into rooting my fiancee's Evo 3D to run an app to unlock contact photos for handcent, but it does seem pretty tedious to root them from the searching I've done here, unlike Odin in the Samsung world. Is there a particularly painless way to root the 3D but preserve data? Cause I doubt she'll want me to wipe it just for that, heh.

Unfortunately there isn't, since you have to either HTC unlock the bootloader, which resets the phone, or flash an RUU (stock ROM) to go straight to S-OFF. Since you are not starting with root, you might want to try MyBackup from the Play Store which doesn't require root for the basic backup to save as much as you can, then root (and optionally S-OFF) and restore from the backup on the SD card.
I've recently opened a thread in the General Forum to make it easier for Sprint users to get root, and optionally S-OFF, but there's no such thing as a one click root for the Evo 3D. I tried one that was posted in the General Forum a couple of weeks ago but it didn't work on our device.
