Headphone jack stopped working - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I've had my S2 for a few weeks now and I've never had any problems up until now when my headphone jack stopped working for some reason.
I use my phone for music when I'm driving and I always connect an AUX cable to it and it worked flawlessly. Fast forward to last night, I'm leaving the gym and plug in my phone as I usually would, but this time I hear a weird thumping noise coming from the speakers... I immediately unplug it and plug it back in once again but the noise persists.
I head back home and I plug in the headphones I always use but when I turned on the music, it played through my speaker. I checked to make sure I plugged it in all the way, turn it on again to no avail.
Anyone know what's going on here? Is this a common issue with these phones? do I have to send it back to AT&T?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like bad hardware. If it were my phone the first thing I'd do is take it to 100% stock. If problem is gone then it was just software. If it still doesn't work, your phone is already to go back for a warranty exchange.
First I've heard of a headphone jack failing, with no water damage, on this phone.

Had this problem 2 phones ago. Csr will ask you to do a reset on your phone before any actions can be taken.

I just started getting this issue a couple of weeks ago. I took it back to bone stock and still nothing. I get the feeling it is the built in amp crapping out. I use mine for the same purpose, the aux input in my car. I always had to crank the phone volume to max so I could control it with my car's controls. Maybe the constant high output killed it? Either way I don't want to have to go without my phone even for a week or two.. :'(

What do you mean? I called them and explained how I know it isn't software and they sent me a replacement no questions asked, might have to do it again though for the same reason

They just sent you a replacement? Nice. I'm calling them later today. Hope my warranty isn't expired. I was just wondering if you thought it was the headphone amp or what.

I just got off the phone with AT&T's warranty guys and they are sending me a refurb to replace it. They asked all kinds of questions, but really I just needed the last 4 of the IMEI and whether or not the freaking moisture sensor was showing a color other than white ( I guess it turns pink/red if it gets wet). I already bought and used a jig on my device to make sure I didn't void the warranty. Hopefully that is all I need to do. Im going to go make sure so I don't get screwed when they get the phone.

Wow, you've got me scared now, I started to notice the thumping noise a couple days ago and since then I've had to plug my phone in and unplug it a once or twice to get the sound to work. I thought it was just a bug in the new ROM I'm running... Did AT&T send you a new phone or did you have to give yours up to get a new one? I don't think I can live without my phone for a week, it would be like removing my testicals or something :O

Poor call quality while charging

I've noticed that when I take a call and my phone is plugged in, the call quality is horrible and it sounds like the signal is cutting out really bad. I typically have three bars at home so that shouldn't have much if anything to do with it. When I unplug the charger from the phone, the call instantly sounds like it should and will immediately start cutting out again if I reconnect the charger. Before I exchange my phone (I'm still within my 14-day return period), has anyone else noticed this?
I can tell you that mine works fine on a call while charging.
I just got off a 10 minute business call with the A/C charger plugged in and it worked just fine.
No issues here.

Never had that issue. Might be getting odd interference.
The same exact thing happens to me while I have my phone plugged into a ubs powered power cord in my vehicle.

This was the OEM charger. I called Verizon and the local store basically said they can look at it and maybe exchange it under warranty...but I was thinking I could exchange it within the 14 days for any reason, no questions asked. Maybe I'm wrong?

within 14 days, they will give you a new phone. otherwise, you would be looking at a refurb.
I took my phone in today and they swapped it out without much hassle. I explained I had done two factory resets (sort of true...one after unlocking the bootloader and then I had to reflash the RUU before I returned it) and the issue persisted. I also had an odd issue with one of my earbuds not always working. Sometimes I'd have to kind of push it into my ear and I'd hear a pop from it, then it would start working. Of course, they exchanged the whole deal for me. I haven't had time to test the call quality yet but I did notice I seem to get a better signal with this one and, on a side note, my volume buttons now have a nice sort of "click" to them where they felt kind of squishy, so to speak, on the previous phone. Minor thing but nice nonetheless.

usb acting up

My phone charges but it seems to be thinking it's always charging even when unplugged. I use it to play music at the bar I work at & it kept going in car docking mode which I never use. My battery was almost dead but it fully charged after the night was done. I went to change the battery to see if that was the problem and when I turned it off the battery charging image came up while it was off with nothing plugged in. Now my battery status keeps flashing & changes from regular size to mini size. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Searching goes a long way here my friend. This is a common problem for a lot of people. (I've never experienced it, but many others have). The solution seems to have been cleaning out the mini usb port on the phone with some 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a que tip. Or if that doesn't work it may be a bad usb port.

I don't know what kind of Que tips you use but the ones I have don't fit. I used tissue folded over and it's still screwy. I think something's loose in the or something because sometimes shaking it makes it stop for a bit. If I get a new usb port from e bay will the one for the i9100 work in mine?

I guess I'm in the same boat with you. Noticed a couple of days ago the phone stopped making the little chime when you connect/disconnect the charger. Yesterday I took it off the charger and after a couple hours it was down to 40% without me using it. Today, I swapped batteries and had the same problem with the battery icon. One second it shows about 3/4 full, the next it says 100%. Then I couldn't get it to boot, just kept cycling through the battery icon. Got it booted and not only does it say charging when not connected, the USB icon is in the Stat bar saying it is MTP-connected. Guess it is time for warranty.:crying:

Are you on a custom rom too? What do you think will be the replacement, the s3? I have insurance on it too, might have to go back to stock tho.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
I'm on stock, but rooted. If they will give me an S3 I will be very happy. Having seen how many people have had issues with the crappy USB connector on this phone, I may have to insist.
The likely option will be the sky rocket... maybe the oneX. Unfortunately, I don't see them giving out S3's.

Sky rocket yes. I wouldn't say the one x is a downgrade necessarily
At this point I might be ready to get away from Samsung. My SI had to be replaced 3 times. The S2 has had some weird issues, but worked until this started 2 days ago. I had an HTC before (WinMo) that is still working fine today. Maybe I'll have better luck with the 1X seeing how apparently Samsung can't make phones that last.
I got an S2 as a replacement. Not a Skyrocket, so it depends on when you call. Otherwise all they would offer me was the skyrocket or 2 windows phones.

What do you think would be easier, getting the part & fixing it myself or using Odin with a tricky usb port to revert back to stock? I also lost my att splash screen by using that gs2 boot screen changing app. I got rid of the app a while back & have used a couple different roms but it seems permanent.

I don't think switching out the part will be too difficult. I have the same exact problem and am planning on switching the port and ribbon sometime in the next couple weeks. I think I've read that the i9100 one works just fine.

I think the problem is actually in the logic board and not just the connector. Even if you fix it the problem will likely reoccur in time. I don't want my phone repaired, even by AT$T, just to have it fail again, but out of warranty next time. I had to have my Captivate replaced 3 times. Maybe it's time to go back to HTC. It sucks, because I love this phone.

Mine started happening after I spilt water on the end of the charging cable and didn't let it dry off completely before plugging it in. Do you still think it would be in the logic board? Then again, it seems like more and more people are getting this problem. And of course, it's just as the warranty is expiring on these phones.

I may have splashed water too, I'm not sure cause I didn't check at the time. I was working at the bar playing music. It seemed to be just a drop on the screen. What's the logic board? Could maybe flashing a new rom fix it?

If it's a physical problem with hardware, no software changes can fix it.

Mine had nothing to do with water. I just think the micro USB connector is a poor design for something that has to be plugged and unplugged as often as a smartphone does and in the kind of environment we use them, especially in the car. The logic board is what the connector mounts to. It takes the signals from the connector and relays that information to determine whether the connection is for charging, PC connection or some other I/O function. Over time the process of disconnecting/connecting will weaken the solder joints and/or cause the thin traces in the ribbon cable to possibly short against each other and create the issues we are seeing. That's why the problems can be seen even after the cable is unplugged. Replacing just the connector will likely not solve the problem.
Talked to support. They are sending me another SII (refurbished). They wanted me to do a factory reset and download an update as part of their troubleshooting. I insisted that no software update would fix a hardware problem. *****ed enough to get them to drop it and send me another phone. My phone is rooted stock 2.3.4. Do you lose root with a reset? If I send it in rooted will that cause me trouble with the warranty dept. even though it isn't relevant to what is wrong with the phone?

[Q] S3 died in pocket - wont switch on, no download mode/recovery no nothing

This morning my S3 was working fine, fully charged over night and functioned as normal. Sent a text, put it in my pocket and went about my business. Checked the time half an hour or so later... still fine. Came to make a call an hour after that, the screen was off and i couldn't get it to switch back on.
My first thought was that it must not have charged over night, plugged in charger and tried again but still nothing. Luckily the misses has an S3 also so I tried her battery in mine and vice verca... her phone switch on with my battery and was still charged... mine still did nothing at all with her battery in. Absolutly nothing!
I can't get anything out of it... wont switch on, no download mode, no recovery, laptop wont pick it up via usb. Its not like it banged anything whilst in my pocket as i was just sat watching TV and an hour ago it was fine.
Anyone had this or know what to do? Is it worth making a JIG to try and force download mode even though no button combo does anything at all? (believe me i've tried them all!)
Phone is rooted and *was* running a custom ROM with no problems. Does it need a trip to a service center? If it has to go for a warranty repair is there any way they can tell root/ROM if no download mode/ recovery?
I could understand if I f***ed it up when flashing something but as I say I was doing nothing at the time.
Thanx in advance for any info!
Theirs a thread started called "borrow a jig near you" if you cannot access download, recovery or anything I think that's the only option you have or the dreaded service centre lol

Happened to mine. Totally dead, was sitting on desk so wasn't touched between last use.
Sent it to Samsung (Regenersis) who replaced a power management IC and the main board.
Sadly it returned with very poor cell reception so went back, and has since come back still with poor reception, scratches, and lint under the camera glass! Not too happy with Samsung's repair centre atm!

Cheers for the replies. Looks like it's off to the service center for a fix and some added problems.
Just hope they can't check the flash counter or ill be paying for it!
EDIT: just spoke to my carrier and because its only a few months old they will replace if free of charge!
Anyone know if it will still have all my personal info on it or is it too dead to talk to anyone?

[Q] Sound died - MDK Rooted

Hello,
While watching a youtube video, the volume suddent cut down to about 5-10% and I could barely hear it. From here on out, I can BARELY hear who I talk to and they can not hear me at all. Forget Pandora, no sound at all even with headphones. In call I can BARELY hear with or without headphones. External speaker = no sound. I tried full factory image using odin and sextapes full md5. Even on first boot, the phone doesn't make its usual sound when displaying splash screens (so it's not a google setting).
Any suggestions? Or must be a board/chip issue?
Best route of replacement? I hear that Verizon replacement is faster than going through Samsung, but which route is actually better?
This really sucks, only had it three months.
John
No input? Interesting. I'd at least like to know if anyone else had the same problem...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
I don't know, I mean Samsung might just repair your speaker and send you back your phone whereas Verizon will probably send you a refurb (which most likely will have ME7 on it). If I were you I'd send it to Samsung and ask nicely for them not to touch the software...
I just can't go that long without a phone. Verizon gave me a $10 discount on my bill and Samsung is sending me a complimentary mhl 2.0 hdmi adapter.
Crossing my fingers on the software being MDK.
Verizon replacement was vraum7 and had a broken earpiece speaker. Second replacement fully functional and is also vraum7.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Sorry didn't see your thread until today. Yes I had that happen 1 month after I got a brand new phone. The phone won't ring even the volume is up full (wife called and I didn't know....not good.). So I called Verizon for a replacement, then send me a refur that has a green tint on the upper left corner on the screen. The original phone start working again as the replacement arrived, waited a 2 days and it died again, so I keep the phone with green tint. Call Verizon and ***** again, they overnight another replacement. This one looks like it's a older HW revision as the label on the back looks different.
All this happened about 1 - 1.5 week after ME7 release, so both replacement were MDK.
If I were you I would call them back and ***** ME7 is buggy and see if they will do anything for you.
Good Luck.
I did. Actually I've been getting a lot of dropped calls and call out failure (with both of the replacements they sent on vraum7). The rep reached out to Samsung to see if they could downgrade me and it was a No. sucks, now I am in the same boat as all the people who bought with vraum7/accidental upgraders...

[Q] Bad mic... not charging...

Hey guys. Received my S5 yesterday and so far I am not pleased with it. I'm pretty sure that the mic is faulty, as I am getting terrible quality when on the phone. (Oddly enough when I am on speaker or using the headphone microphone, people heard me just fine.)
Furthermore, the phone won't charge! It keeps saying that there is no cable plugged in, even though it is. Even more weird, the phone is recognized just fine by my computer and I can move things around on the internal and external memory, but it won't charge. I cleaned the port and tried everything I could think of (factory reset and all that) and still no success. If it does somehow start charging, the phone goes into charging for 6 seconds and then stops. I managed to charge it about 1 percent in an hour.
Any tips on what I could do? Taking it to T-Mobile tomorrow but in the meantime I thought I might ask for suggestions or opinions, especially since right now it is hovering at 9%$ battery life and will soon die.
I think if you ordered it you'll be forced to send it back for a replacement. The store will only replace it if u bought it from the store.
I had this happen to me but several years ago so idk if this is still true.
Either way good luck.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using xda app-developers app
Or it could just be the charger or cable. When you connect to PC are you using same data cable? In regards to bad mic... Return it!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Hey guys quick update. Yes I am using the same cable to charge and connect, and I also tried another cable from my Note 3 so I know that for some reason the port is the issue.
Went to the store today and was told that I had to handle the return over the phone since the order was placed online. Extremely inconvenient as I have to put up with the damaged device for a few more days, but at least they are using overnight shipping so it will be here by Monday. To anyone that might read this and got their phone online, don't bother going to the store and just call T-Mobile if something went wrong and you need an exchange.
