Shameless crosspost from the tutorial-thread for installing Cyanogenmod on the Neo over at the Cyanogenmod forums.
Hi! I'm quite new to rooting and flashing my device (started reading and doing it yesterday), but I really want to make it work now, but I can't seem to get it working.
I have no problems rooting my phone or installing ClockWorkMod, but I can't seem to get it to run neither a custom kernel nor a custom ROM.
I have a SE Xperia Neo, and have both followed the mentioned tutorial, and tried other methods (some pulled straight out of my ass) to flash my device, but no matter what I do, ecxept flashing to a stock ROM of Android (I think that's what it is called?), it always freeze on the Sony Ericsson logo, right after the FreeXperia logo, and I have to do a hard shutdown (pop out the battery and replace it again) to get it to do something else. However, when frozen, both Flashtool and SuperOneClick is able to root the system at this point, so it isn't frozen, but it never goes on doing something, either. I guess it's just trying to boot a (incompatible) ROM.
My bootloader is unlocked (I just checked).
I've tried following the mentioned tutorial with both a phone flashed with 4.0.2.A.0.42 and 4.0.1.A.0.283 (read somewhere those were the best supported or best to use for this?). I've tried flashing the boot.img from the Cyanogen-zipfile to the phone (went well) on both; I've tried repeatedly pressing the volume down key both on boot and on the FreeXperia screen; I've tried to flash boot.img to the phone, rooting i, using both SuperOneClick and Flashtool then installing the ClockWorkMod (as I couldn't get to the recovery screen). And, I've followed the tutorial between two and three times with both 4.0.2.A.0.42 and 4.0.1.A.0.283. I have no idea what to try next.
Does anybody here have a clue for me? Should I try flashing with another Android version running on my phone (if so: which)?

First I tried to unlock it again with fastboot, which said it was unlocked. But I also opened the dialer and pressed *#*#7378423#*#*, Service info -> Configuration, and at the bottom it said "Bootloader unlocked: Yes.". Is one of the methods prefered over the over?

No, it doesn't say that
It say bootloader unlock allowed: yes.
And that only means that your phone wasn't locked by operater, and that your fastboot is unlocked, but not that your bootloader is unlocked

Anw, since you see free xperia logo that means you flashed kernel(or at least boot with that kernel) with success.
Q1: You say you pressed volume-, have you tried with pressing back repeatedly? or by taping on screen? or repeatedly pressing power button?
Q2: show me instruction which you used to flash kernel?
Q3: you said you installed CWM trough flashtool, does that mean you manage to enter CWM eventually or not?
Q4: show the link of what you are trying to install.

It's hard to remember what I did and what I did not do to try and boot into recovery mode. I'll try some of those suggestions later today - now I have to go and buy a new pair of shoes.

I did not install CWM through Flashtool. However, when not following the tutorial I mentioned, I installed CWM Recovery using a modded installer. IIRC it was modded by DoomLord, but I can't find the link for it. When using a stock ROM, I boot into CWM Recovery with ease by repeatedly pressing the volume down key.

And, by the way, Madfysh, thank you for caring enough to taking your time to try and bend your mind to understand my problems. If I knew your reddit username, I'd stalk you and upvote everything.
Only things I can think of is:
1) make 100% sure you are writing fastboot flash boot boot.img and not fastboot boot boot.img
Sometimes people write wrongly without noticing, and after few posts they realize they wrote wrong instructions.
2) try repeatedly pressing other keys, each time your phone starts with that kernel, try pressing one key.
3) try FREEXPERIA RELEASE INSTALLATION from same link.
I will try everything you've suggested, Madfysh, and report back after trying.

As the download link was not working/outdated, I tried another kernel/ROM-combo, that worked. Now I'll try and see if I can find a ROM that I really like and use that instead of Cyanogenmod, as it looks like it don't play well with my phone at this point. Thank you for taking your time to try to help me, Madfysh. You're the best!
I still don't know about any rooting process and there was a lot of instructions I can't understand. Almost all of them are in shortcuts. I tried searching but almost all of it was too much complex for me. Computer illiterate here. >_<
I tried rooting my phone when it was still .42 using the one with zergrush. And now I updated my phone via PCC the root was gone. And I can't seem to root again via same method.
I downloaded things I saw here like the flash tool, fast boot, cwm and I don't gave a single clue how to use them right and there was this OTA or OTE updating to .62 which I don't understand what it is. I'm afraid I may do something bad to my phone.
Is there a way to root my phone again without unlocking the bootloader? Seems like on some of what I understand you have to unlock it, to use fastboot, flashtool or CWM. But I'm afraid to do it. Can you help me with the clearest instruction on how can I root my phone again? Thanks. And sorry for being ignorant with this things >_<
hello
you could flash .42 with wotanserver and root it, after that, update phone on phone! not pc companion, root will not stay. if you have unlocked bootloader, try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134335

Why creating new thread? I see you already know much, so that means you read some threads, so why starting new one in stead of replying in existing one?
OTA update is Over The Air update, meaning you need to use update center option in your setttings->about phone, not using pc companion or seus.

some shortcuts like how do you do fasboot mode? or flashmode? can I install CWM without unlocking bootloader, how you use the CWM if you succesfully installed it and things? And how you use the flashtool. I'm sorry, still pretty much learning it. sorry for bad english
edit:
anyway thanks for the link I'm going to try it and sorry for making another topic. >_< because I'm so confused. Anyway if you can flash .42 you can flash .62 too right?

1) better to bump older thread(even though I'm sure it was already bumped ) than to create new thread, because that way you spread information on more places, instead of one place
2)fastboot mode: phone turned off, while holding menu, key connect cable, blue LED should turn on.
3)flashmode: phone turned off, while holding back key, connect cable, green LED should go on.
4)CWM can be installed even on locked bootloader, but you need to have root to install CWM
5)how to enter CWM? that depends on CWM, on some you need to press repeatedly back key while booting, some pressing volume-, on some you need to tap on screen.
6)you can flash any fw, whether you use flashtool(link to tutorial) and flash .ftf file, or using wotan-server(easier for new guys)

Not if you wanna have root, and keep your bootloader locked.
As you already noticed(by your experience) you can't root .62. So flash .42, root, and do OTA update.

well, that depends on forum this one is really big, and it's hard to find information if there are million threads about same thing.
on some other, smaller forums, they let new peoples to create new thread for their problems.
but still, even if you bumped some threads here, it wouldn't be a big bump, since threads aren't so old here.
Oh god! Good thing I visited this again before downloading the .62 tft file! Thanks again!
And thanks, now I know, I'll just bump other threads if I have questions again.
Hi all, i recently scoured these forums searching for the most simple way to achieve recovery on the Xperia S. Of course to no avail to a newbie like myself. My device is rooted and with ICS, with an unlocked bootloader. I initially tried to achieve CWM by using the application on the market (Prior to obtaining root but with unlocked bootloader & ICS). I recently tried to achieve CWM using the CWM - Xperia on the market and success it worked! Simply click the "Reboot into recovery mode" within the application and it will install CWM into the system partition so you can use recovery! I am unsure whether this has been posted recently but i avoided posting it elsewhere due to restrictions and the like, i hope this hasn't been discovered yet and im not just being ignorant to the forum i literally could not find any news of this elsewhere!
If needs be, i will make a guide on how to achieve this including the rooting and flashing steps i took.

Unzip using WinRar
Connect your phone in normal mode
Go to the folder you extracted earlyer
Double click on "Install.bat"

While turning on,at the Sony Boot Logo simply tap a few times the screen!
Now you should have CWM Recovery on your phone!

CWM is some kind like the Bios from your pc...except does not have the same functions
it`s a recovery, where you can backup your rom and restore if something goes wrong with your phone!
with it you can install some custom ROM`s
you can clear cache...dalvik cache....and a lot more to do!
but really the mos usefull function of it is the backup-restore and the flash of different modules rom`s and kernels!
it`s better to have cwn just in case

install Sony PC Comanion first
second check the usb debugging box from {}developer options
then just plug your phone into the usb
after that double click on install.bat
i am on unlocked bootloader
i don`t know if it works with locked bootloader
it should work
another way to install CWM is to flash a kernel wich already have CWM on it!
to do that you must install fastboot driver an connect your phone in fastboot mode to your pc(with the phone shut off pres and keep volume up key and plug into USB untill the blue led is on)
than go to the extracted folder(in the attachment) and pres and hold shift key + right click
select from menu open command window here
in the cmd window type " fastboot flash boot kernel.elf" without the comma`s
it will install the Xperia SSpedd OC @ 1,67 MHZ and you will get CWM olso on your device!
After installing that to enter CWM pres volume up when booting the phone while the blue led and light stripe is on!
this is olso for unlocked bootloader,i don`t know if it works for locked bootloader since my phone is with unlocked bootloader from the day 1!
Again simply installing this APK from the market seems to be less daunting.

Try connecting it to flashtool with holding menu key, tell what flashtool says.
Also check in device manager which device got connected when you connect it with holding menu key.

Now, my phone is okay.
I took out battery. After taking out the battery, I could make one action. If I need another action, I had to take out battery again.
I flashed boot.img from cm9 zip with fastboot and it's okay now. My phone was dead before I took out battery. After inserting battery, I could enter flash mode but, did not succeed flashing official .ftf. That's why I fastboot cm9. As I said before, I had to take out battery to enter into fastboot mode again.
Thank you all for replies.
I love this forum.
Pardon me with my English.
You have to take out battery. Your wrong kernel can possibly make the phone stuck in a loop (what I say "a loop" is really a loop, not a boot loop) or a kernel panic.
Not succeeded with .ftf, and what does the PCC's repair option give you?

Yesterday i was installing a custom rom, eXperience Innovation (the ROM with JB). and there was no problems. all the process went well and the installation finished correctly. i followed all the process how it was described in the thread and reboot the phone. Here is where the problem begin first the system get stuck at the sony logo (for much more time than usually takes when you install a rom) so i reboot again the phone and now it doesn't start.
Actually when i push the power button the green led flashes and nothing else occurs. i just can connect it in flash mode and fastboot mode
I've tried to fix it with pc companion but it says that the phone has a custom software that can't be updated (sony error 2003)
then i tried to install a stock kernel with flash tool but it gets stuck in the process. i tried by flash mode and fastboot mode several times and with different kernels but it doesn't work.
by the way i can't access CWM.
Please any help will be appreciated!

You have unlocked bootloader, right mate?
Sola didn't get official jb update.
When you install jb for first time you have to wait till your phone boots properly. Could ask 15-30 minutes or even more. The key is to be patient.

The only advice i can give you for now is lock your bootloader and try repairing with sony pc companion.
Pc companion will not work on unlocked bootloader.

It's not a kernel mate it's an ftf file. You have to flash it via flashmode not via fastboot mode.

OK, my mistake. but yes i did it by flash mode!
This is no hard brick. This is soft kernel brick. A hard brick is when you can't enter flash mode, and your phone is dead(cannot power on) you can get a hard brick if you are some crazy dev :-\ who constantly brick his phone lol

Did you get any error?
If no, means that your bootloader is now locked. Try installing again stock rom via flashmode or repair your phone using pc companion.
Don't remember where, a user told that had a similar issue with another device and solved it using this tool: http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/
Read the instructions on how to install and use this tool mate.
had similar issue. will try using those methods and see if work. thanks

After all forgive my english and i will appreciate every answer!
