Hey guys,
I'm a noob, and this is my first post here.
I've read many posts already but still have some unanswered questions.
I have a Motorola Atrix 4g with AT&T. I love this phone and never had any problems with it. However, for the past 2 weeks the reception in my house dropped to 1 or 2 bars only. I believe my cell phone is always using the AT&T 4g network which is not good in my area and the option to change networks on my Android is not selectable. I wish I could select a different network (3g perhaps) to get a better reception.
So, here is my question: If I root my Atrix 4g, would I be able to select different networks within AT&T network?
My system version is 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
Android Version is 2.3.4
After I root my cell phone, if I decided to flash my ROM and install Gingerblur, will I loose all my apps? If so, is it possible to use a backup/restore method or would I have to install my apps one by one?
Thanks in advance,
Martin

Little help for the n00b?
I am a new convert to Android from iPhone, I purchased ATT's flagship model (Moto Atrix 4G) only to discover its all sorts of locked down. I carefully followed instructions, updated to 1.8.3, rooted with Gingerbreak, enabled sideloading and tethering APN with Glad enable, then used the CWM equivalent to flash Gingerblur 3.5. (I learn quick lol)
I noticed that after the install and reboot I had no APN's installed and was not connected to any data network, thus resulting in no data connectivity. I manually installed the APN settings provided here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=193
I am now getting errors such as "no response from the service" and slow connection speeds. 4G is available in my area but is spotty at best. Would a reflash of Gingerblur clear this up? or do i need to restore to stock .sbf and give it another go?
I too am missing APN's and the built in wi-fi hotspot doesn't turn on.
I believe this is an issue with Gingerblur 3.1 and 3.5.
I would recommend using GladEnabler to restore a custom APN

You could also check what radio setting your phone is using by going to the dialer and typing
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone information
Set preferred network type:
GSM/CDMA auto(PRL) I guess?
-ISSUE RESOLVED-
I realized after hours of trial and error that the issue went all the way back to the 1.8.3 .sbf I was using, once i restored to a retail 1.2.6 then updated OTA to get to 1.8.3 the issue was resolved. Even after all that I ended up taking my phone back to best buy and exchanging it for the new Samsung Infuse 4G. I upgraded from to the Atrix 4G from the Captivate (which I thoroughly LOVED!) but just couldn't get used to it, each phone is different even when it comes to the same models and my experience with the Atrix 4G can be described in one word...buggy, which is a shame since the Atrix 4G is probably the most powerful phone on the market right now... So I went back to my Galaxy S roots. Thanks for the help anyways, it is appreciated.
I have been around the forum for many years now, but am new to Android. I purchased a GT-i9100 in India for work travel between US and there. I have rooted and upgraded to 2.3.4, and applied a new kernel to remove the exclamation point. So, with that said, here is my question:
I am in the US right now, and in an area supported by T Mobile HSPA, but the phone will only connect to Edge. I am PRETTY sure it was only connecting to Edge before I did the work, but I cannot be sure. Would there be anything I did to the phone that would prevent it from getting onto the "4G" network? Is there anything I need to do now to change so it can connect?
I am not sure if this is related either, but I have a Verizon LTE data card, and if I place that SIM in the GT-i9100, it won't recognize it at all. It seems to only see T Mobile and ATT in the US.
I have spoken to T Mobile and they confirmed the 4g availability where I am, and they also reset my network connection, so the issue does not appear to be on my account or with TMobile.
Sorry for the long post, but I have been searching around and can't seem to get my small mind around resolution.
The SGS2 does not work with T-Mobile's 4G bands here in the US. If you want 4G you'll need AT&T.

That's because there is no resolution. As stated in several other threads on these forums (learn to do a search, and there's even one on the main page of Q/A right now) THERE IS NO WAY to get 3G on T-Mobile. The hardware in the phone does not support their 1700MHZ band.
Your 2 options:
1. Buy a T-Mobile phone
2. Switch to AT&T

The Atrix isn't a 4G phone.
If you're having problems with 3G coverage set the network to 2G-only in settings
If you don't have that option dial *#*#4636#*#*.In the menu that pops up go to "phone information" and select "GSM only" in the drop down box.
That didn't answer my questions about rooting and gingerblur.
Bump ^
I have no idea what you mean by different AT&T networks???
You can not flash a ROM without unlocking your bootloader first, and then install a recovery... use Rom Racers.
DO NOT flash Gingerblur. It's a froyo based pseudo ROM, that will not work on a gingerbread based machine... not to mention it's almost a year old.

I have an old unlocked 3g Sony Ericsson (not Android phone) that allows me to choose between GSM only, GSM with 3g, and different AT&T towers. This options is under mobile networks.
Thanks for the other info though.
So, back to my initial question. After unlocking my bootloader and rooting, will I have the capability of choosing between GSM only, GSM with 3g, and different cell phone towers?
I have a mac, and I know how to do the about on it, but will I be able to flash ROM and change kernel from a mac OS?

Unlocking the bootloader and flashing a new rom seems like overkill. Just do what Blueangel180 said...

Ok, first and foremost I'm not new to rooting for flashing, I did have a LGP350 that I rooted and flashed, it started malfunctioning (hardware issue) so I got a new low end Android phone from Walmart (Huawei U8652), I used SuperOneClick to Root it and installed CWM Recovery, now what I'm having problems with is that I wanted to use GSM networks since I have better GSM coverage in my area, since the phone has AT&T rom is doesn't allow me to select "only use 2g networks" (GSM), as a matter of fact I dont even see the option, so I was looking for a Gingerbread Rom for the U8652.
The forum doesn't seem to have a Huawei catagory, and its quite confusing trying to find anything.
Bump
Well I found 1 compatible rom (cyanogen_u8650-benru89v4), but Only use 2G networks and Network Preferences does not seem to be working properly, I tried to set network preferences to GSM Only but it wont stay on it. Is anyone else experiencing this with this rom?
Bump...??
Recently ended up with this phone, wanted to use it on straight talk with a AT&T sim since it is unlocked.
It works, kind of.
I get one bar or no signal in places I have 2 or 3 bars on my old HTC one M8.
I thought about trying a different rom or a different radio if you can flash those on this phone. I am used to the unlocked bootloader on M8.
I even tried the aluminum foil mod around the battery I found on these fourms. Currently I am back on the HTC because this thing gets no service. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Search the General and Q&A sections for unlocking radio bands, although I don't personally have experience with this - have just seen the multiple threads.
I finally managed to get into the Verizon hidden menu and enable all supported bands, 2 and 5 were unselectable but I think AT&T uses 4. Still getting spotty service, anyone know if any modems are better for gsm than whatever version is with the stock 6.0.1 rom? I've seen a few post mentioning 12b, is that the most stable or something?
How did you did that? Interested in getting 2600Mhz (if possible)
