Hey guys,
I'm a noob, and I need some help.
I've read many posts already but still have some unanswered questions.
I have a Motorola Atrix 4g with AT&T. I love this phone and never had any problems with it. However, for the past 2 weeks the reception in my house dropped to 1 or 2 bars only. I believe my cell phone is always using the AT&T 4g network which is not good in my area and the option to change networks on my Android is not selectable. I wish I could select a different network (3g perhaps) to get a better reception.
So, here is my question: If I root my Atrix 4g, would I be able to select different networks within AT&T network?
My system version is 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
Android Version is 2.3.4
After I root my cell phone, if I decided to flash my ROM and install Gingerblur, will I loose all my apps? If so, is it possible to use a backup/restore method or would I have to install my apps one by one?
Thanks in advance,
Martin
The Atrix isn't a 4G phone.
If you're having problems with 3G coverage set the network to 2G-only in settings
If you don't have that option dial *#*#4636#*#*.In the menu that pops up go to "phone information" and select "GSM only" in the drop down box.
That didn't answer my questions about rooting and gingerblur.
Bump ^
I have no idea what you mean by different AT&T networks???
You can not flash a ROM without unlocking your bootloader first, and then install a recovery... use Rom Racers.
DO NOT flash Gingerblur. It's a froyo based pseudo ROM, that will not work on a gingerbread based machine... not to mention it's almost a year old.

I have an old unlocked 3g Sony Ericsson (not Android phone) that allows me to choose between GSM only, GSM with 3g, and different AT&T towers. This options is under mobile networks.
Thanks for the other info though.
So, back to my initial question. After unlocking my bootloader and rooting, will I have the capability of choosing between GSM only, GSM with 3g, and different cell phone towers?
I have a mac, and I know how to do the about on it, but will I be able to flash ROM and change kernel from a mac OS?

Unlocking the bootloader and flashing a new rom seems like overkill. Just do what Blueangel180 said...

Hey guys... I just picked up a
SGH-i717
v 4.0.4
Black Star V LF6
LTE Sim, LTE phone, downtown Toronto
I just picked the phone up on the weekend.... It's my first unlocked phone and my first rooted phone. I can't seem to get a network connection (I'm with Fido).... initially I tried a number of APN settings as I browsed through various threads on APN settings for Fido, Android and Galaxy Notes. Over the weekend I had connection of approx 1 to 2 bars, and was at least pulling light bandwidth off the edge network. I called Fido last night to have my network settings reset, and since them I haven't been able to get on my network. It seems to jog between no connection, 1 bar and 2 bar signal strength. Where before it said it was on the edge network it now does not connect to a network.
Calls to Fido show that everything is set up ok from their end; they can't support a non-Fido phone, and they say that they can't guarantee I'll get more than 2 bars connection on any non-fido phone. I was making calls & texts from the phone on the weekend whereas now, following the network reset from Fido, I have no connection. Yet when I Reset to Default the APN settings it populates the fido LTE apn without issue.
I'm lost... could someone please help me out here? I have no experience with either rooted phones or unlocked ones... and my furious googling and thread browsing just seems to be hitting the same recycled threads.
'
Where I'm left is now it's saying 'Not Registered On Network' regardless of the APN setting I use.
You need to check your baseband, or modem. And verify you have the correct one for the fido network.
I Dont know which radio image is going to work for you, but it sounds like the rest of the device is fine.
Check in the general section, and open the "super everything" thread.. There you will find many solution threads, and possibly the correct radio image to get your device running properly.
Radio images are almost always a .zip file that is flashed in recovery. and they are very easy to use. You simply download the image you want to try, and place it on your SD card. then boot into recovery and flash the file....reboot, and test.
You should read up on the flashing method too, and ensure that you understand exactly what you are doing "before" making internal changes to your device.
Additionally, you should make a nandroid backup of your current rom, just in case something goes wrong. then you have the ability to restore the old build and get the phone running again.
read, read, read....it's the only way to grasp this information...
good luck.....g
Thanks gregsarg, that's a great start for me. I will throw myself into that direction. Thanks again for your help.

always welcome....g
Well, a slow evening with little progress. After reading much, I ran a backup and tried installing a radio...no error message, just says installation aborted... not sure what tdsp is but I tried downloading and installing goo manager as I read where CWM (which is what I.assume I have now) doesn't work that might, but the installer which was supposed to have rebooted my phone and installed, it did not. This was a good 3 hrs and I was spent for the night. Guess I'll keep plowing away tomorrow.
I created a TWRP backup and have begun flashing different radios/modems... When I try to access mobile networks with the different radios installed none seem to work... .... so far I've tried:
Blaze_4g_LB7_radio_ATTNOTE
icsblaze
ROGERS_MODEM-CWMXLA2
UVLG3modemfori717
VK1_Test
KID_TEST
I've always wiped the dalvik/cache before flashing a new radio. My baseband was i717UCLF6, but after I restored it's now T879UVLG3, which is wierd because UVLG3 was the last radio I installed before I restored. I assume the radio didn't restore and I'm now using a T879 radio as opposed to an i717 radio, but it does not prompt me for a sim card after the restore. I can select a preferred band using the *#2263# command, but none seem to drive a better signal - I'm still idling somewhere between a no-signal and unknown network (most of the time) and 1 to 2 bars. Some of the above recognized my sim and suggested either HSPA, GSM, etc on the *#2263# command, others showed nothing when I did that.
Am I correct in assuming I just need to keep doing this until I find a compatible radio and upon flashing and rebooting it will simply connect with a solid signal? Is there any more specific versions of radios I should be targeting?
Re: SGH-i717 No network connectivity
The modem isn't changed or restored when you restore a nandroid or flash a rom.
If your goal is t-mobile or wind or simplemobile. You have the correct modem installed.
Just go to settings and input your APN and save it. Not every rom has the apn's , and not every carrier automatically sends the apn settings.
Thanks Ranger... my goal is to get it working with Fido... but I'm not sure if that's synonymous with T-mobile or Wind yet
and ngretud
Anyone else have any input on Fido radios? I can seem to find one that works for Ontario....
consistent tomsisu
I've now tried the following radios:
ICS Kid
ICS Telus
ICS.zip
ICSblaze
Kid_Test
UVLG3modem
VK1_Test
Every single one upon reboot leaves me with no connection.,, I don't get what I'm doing wrong here... frustrating. Only way I can get any kind of connection after flashing radios for hours is to flash my restore, which brings me back to the edge2 network. I've tried the Good Blaze ICS newamss and the UVLG3modelfori717...n7005amss too, and while I do get a connection it's virtually the same as the existing crappy 0 to 1 bar, or none with a no-connection symbol.
Any help guys?
Anyone at all? I get weak to no.reception in most places and when I leave the city I have no.connection at all. If it was the radios then why wouldn't trying all those radios show improvement? At this rate I am considering just scrapping the whole thing and getting a phone tats locked to Fido if this is the best there is.
Is this the right forum for this?
Re: SGH-i717D Radio/Modem for Fido - help!
There is no such thing as a Fido radio. You flash a T-Mobile compatible radio (recognizes and uses the two bands/frequencies AWS), verify the baseband in phone settings is the radio you flashed, input the correct APN settings for Fido.
Things to check: your sim works with data in another phone, data is enabled in phone settings.

Thx... SIM works fine, data is enabled. Phone always says unknown under the baseband on phone settings. Pretty confident APN settings are fine, I had them confirmed with Fido. Is it just I haven't found the right modem/radio?
I tried the ones I've found most common in threads: iceblaze, KID, VK1 and even an UVDLE from an S2 thread.... still getting the same low, low signal, 0 to 2 bars with intermittent EDGE:2 signal.
Re: SGH-i717D Radio/Modem for Fido - help!
Ok, so you are sending/receiving data. But is that only using EDGE network or have you connected to 3G data network?
And if you don't have a baseband, the usual remedy is to return to stock at&t ICS rom and reflash your preferred modem.
Have you had better data strength with another device? Maybe two bars is all your location gets.

I know we are conversing privately but I'll continue the responses here in case it benefits someone else. I haven't been able to connect to a 3g data network yet.... Because my unit is an i717D (Telus), do I need to flash to the stock Telus ICS rom or do I need to use the AT&T rom?
I was using an HTC One S, same network but locked to Fido, default OS, same SIM card, and was getting perfect signal and data speeds. I can't see how a place like downtown Toronto would yield any signal issues... like you said it seems like it's a radio/modem issue.
Re: SGH-i717D Radio/Modem for Fido - help!
I hate to suggest it, but one old dependable T-Mobile compatible modem:
http://bayfiles.com/file/6FwV/WrxD5a/Blaze_4G_LB7_radio_ATTNOTE.zip
Its been modified and many have had success with it.
So I have flashed a stock Telus ICS ROM, and along with a stock Rogers radio am getting a baseband I717RUXLF4, Edge:2 signal, and even Fido under network. Getting 1-3 bars signal strength, but still no data.
I tried flashing like 5-7 ICS radios and all of them produced a 'no sim' on reboot. I had to re-flash the stock Telus ICS rom and the rogers radio to get it to read a SIM again...
Super frustrating as I feel like I'm going around in circles never solving the issue here...
Does anyone have experience with Fido modems in Toronto or Ontario? Everything I seen to find.is either for.Telus, Rogers, Wind or Bell...
Sent from my SGH-I717D using xda app-developers app
Another update for no one to read....
Tried flashing the Perfection ICS ROM... got same signal issues, installed the Rogers radio that seemed to work incrementally better with the stock Telus Rom... still floating around the issue of low signal...
There is a shockingly little amount of documentation on Fido setups here... most everything is either Bell, Rogers or Telus, with some Wind and Mobilicity.
Can ANYONE please provide me with some direction here? I think I've done my due diligence and respected the process for new people that these forums demand in terms of reading, research and such... I haven't spammed my issues anywhere else, and clearly seem to be stuck on this issue....
Ok, you need a modem that is 850/1900. at&t is 900/1900. So thats why you get 2G because in some areas you connect with a weak signal.
The Canadian stock rom and the Canadian stock modem for Rogers should work.
In network settings you may be able to select network frequencies. If so, select WCDMA only so your phone stays on 1900.
If that doesn't work, dial *#2263# and find the band selector, and select 850.
Hey guys,
So I have a bit of a tricky question that I can't seem to find an answer for. My wife and I just move to Europe for work for 2 years. We had AT&T in the states, so my wife has an AT&T HTC One X+. We got our phones SIM unlocked before we left, and purchased French SIM cards that run on the Bouygues Telecom network. My phone (Lumia 925) can do wifi tethering no problem... My wife's on the other hand has issues. I keep getting the following error:
" There is a temporary network problem that prevents the enablement of the Mobile Hotspot function. Please retry later."
I have tried the following steps:
1. Rooting the phone.
2. Installing other hotspot apps (Both root and non-root)
3. Installed custom ROMs with hotfixes to remove AT&T data requirements.
I don't know if it's relevant, but when I do a reset on the phone, it doesn't automatically connect to Bouygues network for data. I have to manually add the APN every time. Once I do that, her mobile data works just fine, so I don't THINK that the APN is causing the problem...
Anyways, if anyone has an suggestions on how to fix this issue, I would be indebted to you... I've just never encountered this problem on any of my other Android devices and I have to believe that there is a simple solution to fix the problem that I've just not encountered. Thanks!!
I loved my international HOX, so when got dropped in water i said lets go for the ATT HOX+ that has LTE.
Big mistake! I have OP's same issue, im in spain and my provider is Movistar.
I bought it on e-Bay, configured all the APNs, I used settings from their webpage and also tried telephony.db values from an international rom, stock rom didn't tether.
Rooted stock (4.1.2 i think it was) still nothing.
Elegancia (4.2.2) ROM, still nothing.
Changed some stuff on the telephony.db, still nothing
Swapped the wifirouter.apk with the international wifirouter.apk, still nothing.
Nuked TetherGuard.apk, still nothing.
Installed Moto-X tether Xposed module, still nothing (probably cause it's for android 4.4).
I read that AOSP or Cyanogen ROMs don’t have this issue.
I also read that if you swap telephone.db from international version to USA version the phone goes into a reboot loop, [More Info].
I guess the solution lays in something similar to the Moto-X tether patch, but i don't really have the time to fork the project, and try to get my tethering working.
Hope someone can give us a hand, im sure there are at least 5 more people in this same situation.
Hey all, I'm new to all this 'phone personalization'. I was recently given this phone, but don't live in a Verizon network. I've set it to Global, and LTE, and it has a hard time staying connected to any one network. It also uses a lot of battery constantly searching.
So, I've rooted the phone, (got rid of some bloatwear) and would like to be able to set it to a specific network. Are there apps for this? Do I need to have a special rom?
Any help would be great, Thanks!
Um, Verizon phones only work on Verizon networks or similar CDMA networks. Sometimes you can unlock for GSM, but I don't think you can. I don't know for sure though. And custom Roms are out, because you have a locked bootloader (unless you have one of the original bootloaders from way back). Since you are rooted, you can try some network settings apps, but these wont help if the phone does not natively support the network you are trying to connect to.

Hi all, sim unlocked s-off sprint m9 used to work well on android 6 with official rom. But until the phone was upgraded to Android 7. Data connection stopped working for one operator (NOS in Portugal). However Vodafone works well.
Tried different roms and apn settings, same at all. Data connection does not work on NOS operator.
Does anyone have similar issue and of course any advices?
Thank you all.

Why sim unlock a Sprint variant and not an AT&T or T-Mobile which already support GSM?
did you find a solution?
i have exact same issue.
bought one m9 from ebay with sprint (651) firmware on.
lte was working fine in israel (1800 2100).
after nougat im only getting 3g.
it makes sense that i cant use those bands (1 and 3 i think) on a sprint device.. but it did work with marshmallow
Same problem in the USA
I have (nearly) the same problem in the United States with a Sprint CDMA version of the One M9. The main difference is that my data speed is even worse than 3G, around 10-20 Kbps. Occasionally, I get faster speeds, but I haven't been able to figure out if it is location-specific (but always away from home and work) or due to some other characteristic.
The phone came brand new in a retail box from an eBay seller. It worked as expected for 1.7 years. The OTA update which installed Android 7 (aka Nougat) in early 2017 resulted in the very slow data speeds. WiFi is unaffected, but data is so slow that I cannot reliably send or receive MMS; Google Maps says that I do not even have a data connection for traffic info.
EcoMobile (my MVNO provider; I still have a sprint email address, so I know who is actually providing service) could only suggest resetting my phone; did this twice with no change in operation (but several of the programs which automatically re-installed themselves operated differently, including GMail no longer providing auto-complete for addresses).
After literally 2 hours in chat with htc, they told me that my MEID indicates my phone was "made in Taiwan". I took this to mean that: 1) the person I was chatting with had poor English skills (because aren't they all made in Taiwan?), and 2) my phone is gray market (meaning it was not imported into the country via official channels, even though the manual was in the American version of English).
I came to XDA looking for an answer, too. I was mildly surprised to see that this topic was at the top of the list for the One M9.
The best solution for my situation would be the proper ROM for my phone, but I don't know how to figure that out from the MEID. htc USA says they cannot help me with this.
I could even go back to Android 6, but I do rather like the new features in Nougat.
Alternatively, I could root the phone and install a 3rd party ROM, but I still need to know how to choose the proper one for my phone.
I hope this info finds its way to a helpful expert.
Regards,
Jeff
