Hello,
I have done multiple wipes and resets in attempt to get a different build number on my SGS II and to no avail. I always boot into GINGERBREAD.XXKG3 no matter the kernel or anything else.
Should I just manually put an update on a SD card and see if that works? Or does that really matter?

How are you updating ???
Wipe or reset will not give you a different build number .
If you install KG3 thats what you boot into .
Typical would be to flash a stock rom of a later build .
jje
I am using Odin, from what I had read, I thought all you had to do is put the update in the "pda" section and there you go, what would I have to do to flash it?
Basics are always to follow the instructions with the relevant rom .
Stock Roms .and csc

I have followed that guide multiple times and used multiple roms, and I am still stuck at XXKG3 no matter what file I download and stuck at 2.3.4

No offense, but if you followed that guide multiple times and are still on the same firmware as when you started, then either you are flashing XXKG3 on top of XXGK3, or you are doing it wrong. That guide has worked for countless other people.
none taken, you said that I am flashing it on top of the previous build, how do I remove the previous build?
Post details of the file you are using and how you use .

I am not saying they are wrong, I am just trying to figure out a problem.
I download the XXKI3 package, I put the kernel in PDA, modem in phone and CSC with CSC, leave autoboot and f.reset time on, I dont touch re partition or flash lock or anything else. I also do not touch pit. I make sure the phone is download mode, then click start. It passes, I go into build version and it still says XXKG3.

Well that reads to me either you are downloading from some other site or you are for some reason using xda stock rom but not following the instructions and it looks like you are trying to split the file .

Download KI3 from the stock roms thread .
Extract the TAR by double clicking the download .
OPEN ODIN put tar to PDA
Put phone to download mode and follow instructions on download screen
Connect SAMSUNG usb cable should now show yellow block in Odin flash .

You don't remove. What I was suggesting was that you were flashing KG3 over your existing KG3. Meaning flashing what you already have.
But after reading what you are doing, I don't think that is the case, and you are definitely doing it wrong. Follow JJEgan's directions.
You should only have one .tar file if you downloaded from Intratech's thread, which should be going into the PDA. You shouldn't have to put anything in CSC or modem.
If you are downloading from a different thread, then you should probably follow instructions from wherever you are downloading from.
Perhaps you should follow the instructions on this site . seems pretty foolproof to me...
Here for ICS for example...
Ok I have done it, and it still says gingerbread.xxkg3
Thank you for all your help, I am done with this I'll just deal with it

Ok, but one more question. (I'm just trying to help)
I'm also on KI3.
In Intratech's thread, I'm assuming you're getting XXKI3 from this section:
XXKI3
Firmware info
PDA:XXKI3
PHONE: XXKI3
Date: 15/09/2011
Android 2.3.5
XEO (Poland): http://www.multiupload.com/XTRG43JVEG
XXKI3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/6XT83N1LLN
Password: [email protected]

Click to collapse
Well, when you say you are downloading the tar, are you downloading from the 1st line (that says "XEO (Poland)"), or the second line (that says "XXKI3 Stock Kernel")??
If you're using the stock kernel line, then yes, all you're doing is flashing the kernel. You'll never update your firmware that way. The firmware update is the first download.
The stock kernel is there just to be available if you wanted to flash an insecure kernel for root, and need it to flash back the stock kernel to get rid of the /!\ symbol that displays during boot.

So you're only flashing a kernel, not a ROM.

Hey,
Ive been searching for 6 hours now and i still haven't found the solution to my problem.
My problem:
Today i got my Samsung Galaxy S2, so i wanted to put a custom ROM on it using this guide: http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/.
Firstly i rooter my phone without a problem. After that i followed the guide. This was no problem untill i had to: 'Launch ROM Manager and tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and pick Samsung Galaxy S II from the list of compatible smartphones.' There was an error in recovery mode about verification.
After this i flashed my phone with clockworkMod-Recover to be able to put of verification. When i toggled it off i tried to update my phone to CM7 wich was on my sd card.
When i tried rebooting now it was stuck on loading screen with the well-known yelolow triangle.
I tried everything (including: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499 -> did everything perfectly). I tried to flash other stuff. But still same problem i wiped it a lot, still nothing.
I can acces download and recovery mode without any problems. i even flashed the phone to the stock kernel (Kernel_I9100XWKI4). so now i dont have a yellow triangle but still stuck at boot screen.
I am desperate and depressed that my expensive phone wont boot up. Can anyone please help me out i'm even willing to pay the one who helps me out.
Thanks in advance!

Tried this a lot, doesnt fix it.
1) Get the right CF Kernel from the Chainfire kernel thread in the Android Original Development Thread. Extract the zip to get a TAR and extract the TAR to get a z-image file. Also download the corresponding original stock kernel from the Intratech thread in the same section.
2) Flash the TAR in PDA using Odin. Do not click repartition. This lets you boot with with functional Root and CWM.
3) If you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, then load the z-image file into /sdcard. Reboot into download mode and use Odin to flash the stock kernel (again in the PDA without repartition). After that, go to the CWM app, choose flash kernel and locate the zimage and proceed.
NB: You can read Chainfire and Intratechs threads in case I was vague somewhere.
Installing CM
1) After all this, put the latest nightly into /sdcard
2) Boot into recovery.
3) Clear Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache (in advanced). Go to install Zip-->Choose Zip from SD card--> Choose the CM7 nightyl file.
4) Flash is twice i.e consecutively. The first time, it just takes like a second to flash, the second time will be the complete install. No idea why this happens or whether its been fixed now.
5) Reboot.
The next time, dont google for this type of Info. The XDA forums has everything you need and a good search engine too.
Let me know if you still have issues.
Cheers.
EDIT: RomManager works best on CM7 only. I suggest that you keep it that way. It does not work with the basic stock rooted CF Kernels as is mentioned on his thread.

I allready get stuck on the first thing, i flashed the CF kernel with Odin and after this he wont boot so i cant procede. This is my problem he just doesnt wanna boot.
I dont want any custom ROM's anymore i just want the default phone back. This is a disaster.
Did you choose the right CF Kernel. It has to be chosen to be inline with the Kernel version that came with your phone. As you've not managed to flash a modded kernel, you will still be on the same kernel that came along with you phone. You cant choose any CF Kernel that you like.
You've mentioned Kernel_I9100XWKI4. Is this the same that came with the phone or did you pick some random kernel?
Another option is to try that android recovery, but Im not familiar with it and its options.
I had the same issue as you when I was playing around with cutom kernels and CWM

Yes that is the original one (I9100XWKI4). I am also not familiar with android recovery.
Ok, if its KI4, then theres a Ki4 for Gingerbread 2.3.4 and another for 2.3.5. You have to choose the right one

I tried both, none worked :s
Then I think its best that you head over to Intratechs thread, a new firmware itself and flash it over. As you say KI4, download XWKI4 2.3.4, both the OXX multi CSC and the stock kernel and reflash your whole firmware as per the instructions in the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Also make sure that Samsung Kies is not running anywhere. Kill it in processes and do not let it boot in msconfig.

None required mate. If you are still interested in rooting, follow the instructions Id mentioned in my first post using the CF KI4 Kernel for 2.3.4 and you should be fine.
As an alternative custom rom to CM7, check out GingerMod, I can vouch for it.

Hello,
I just flashed with odin the new ICS firmware out on sammobile for sgs2 (I9100XXLP6 ##) which came with a file for PDA, for CSC and for Phone, but now that I am trying to flash again any 2.3.6. firmware I keep getting errors already at the start when associating my google account and stuff...
I assume that is because of the additional CSC and PHONE file that was included in I9100XXLP6 ## but I don´t know where to find the refering files for 2.3.6. firmwares since these only come with 1 file (for PDA)...
I would be glad for any help I can get
Hi,
Could you give more information about the errors? At what point do they occur? What errors do you get?
The csc files can be found somewhere on xda, use the search function. The file you need for the phone is called a modem, can also be found on xda.
Although I do not expect that this causes the errors, how did you restore? Did you while your phone and cache first?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
What 2.3.6 rom are u trying to flash on?
If the DL was dodgy it would cause problems, redownload and reflash
PIT: if included, also optional
PDA:Code
Phone:modem
CSC:multi csc
Did you do a full wipe?

greetings hello I commented that the same thing happened to me the only thing I do is flash with this version XWKK5
follow these steps:
1.Install again (XXLP6) completely.
2.turn off the phone and enter download mode and install the (XWKK5).
3. Once you install the XWKK5 completely. turn off the phone and go into recovery mode and perform the wipes
I hope to help and luck.
I hope you understand me and sorry but my English is a bit bad jejjee
I flashed this update, throuch odin, and now the phone will only boot into download mode or the screen that says to use kies recovery. The problem is, even though I can boot into download mode, the computer no longer recognizes my phone. No sounds when I plug it in or anything. If I plug a jig in, it will come on so it's not the port. Can someone help me?

You need a three part firmware, with modem, csc and pda, flash with pit and repartition, to do a full wipe. I think you used a non wipe firmware, that's the reason for the bugs.
Question
When you flashed the LP6, did you flash it with the .pit file too? I suggest you flash back to your stock ROM but you also have to flash a .pit file as well. This happened to me too when I flashed the KP8 ROM. I reflashed my stock ROM but it kept giving me errors at the initial boot. So I flashed my stock ROM again this time with the same .pit file. If I'm not mistaken it's this: u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit

Did you get the 2.3.6 firmware? If not look at this thread from Infratech: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278. Have a good look at the section marked "Individual CSC Packages". Maybe this could help if you suspect a wrong CSC being the cause of your problem.

Just download this CF-root file for KK1: http://download.chainfire.eu/66/CF-Root/SGN/CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5.zip
And then put your phone into download mode and flash that CF-root file using Odin. It should boot up after. Don't worry.
As long as you don't flash a pit file and you don't tick repartition, we can still save it easily.

Better you flash a stock now,
go to sammobile.com and find a suitable stock firmware and also download Odin flash guide from the same site and read carefully and flash.
then you find Matching CF-root kernel
thanks god with unsecure kernel and odin my phone is back again,
i was so pissed tried so many methods, even downloaded from samsfirmware the stock custom rom and it only gave me one md5 file...
so, thank you very much, reading helps a lot, now i know how to brick my phone with the unuseful cfroot kk1 5.0 version... speedmod kk1 version doesnt works too.
i have tried different methods to fix this
first thing i did was use odin to put a stock rom on my phone that didn't work with and without pit
then i tried using odin with another stock rom where you had to use bootloader, pda, phone and csc instead of just pda, when i tried this it just stays on datafs and does not move with and without pit
the other thing i tryed was going into recovery mode and putting CF-root and installing CM9 via zip all that did was make the phone stay on the CM9 splash screen
is there something i have missed?
You probably have damaged /data partition.

What model phone do you have? It is printed on the label under your battery.
And what did you try to flash, EXACTLY? (links would be helpful)
Usually getting stuck like this means you were flashing something not meant for your phone.
EDIT: also, there are instructions for installing CM9 on this thread which are supposedly "noob proof". Were these the instructions you followed?

Hey guys,
I've spent the better half of 8 hours looking on multiple forums/downloading roms/attempting to flash my cousin's GT-I9300.
I attempted KIES update and emergency maintenance and they both start freezing.
I attemped odin with a multitude of roms with the model & serial given by kies (PDA:LLB / PHONE: LLA / CSC: LL3)
I've even downloading android commander to no avail.
I've successfully rooted and flashed my i747 multiple times so i'm somewhat familiar with the odin flash process, but this is a bit unsual.. and frustrating lol.
The phone is in reboot cycle (loops after the samsung logo animation), won't let me access recovery but will let me get into odin recovery.
Odin seems to have failed at every stock rom flash...
ANY help?

I assume with odin recovery you mean download mode? If so try to flash a stock ROM (maybe first a version that is from your region, you can find them on sammobile.com) via Odin and make sure that KIES is turned off (also from task manager, even better uninstall it). Do you have any error message showing up when you try to flash with Odin?
Try the flash again, and if it loops, try booting recovery and doing a reset......yes,I know you said you can't get into recovery, but just try after the flash
Also remember it can take a few minutes to boot after a flash, so be patient and give it a chance

Also what does the Odin log say/what stage is it failing at?

I've attempted to flash maybe 7-8 different roms. My cousin won the gt i9300 at a raffle overseas so thats why im unsure of what exact country it is. Is there a definitive way of finding which country exactly? I do know it was an unbranded rom and fully unlocked because he's been using it here (w/ straighttalk) for the past 6 months or so just fine i even flashed jellybean 4.1.1 when it was first released (via kies).
When I try to and get the version from kies it tells me (PDA:LLB / PHONE: LLA / CSC: LL3) but no country.. so idk if there's a definite way of finding this out. I'm downloading ICS rom and gonna try and roll back the rom as i've read some people did that and it worked.
Once i bring up download mode it says on the top (ODIN MODE) and binary download count YES (1 count) and rom as custom. I attempt to flash Odin it always fails right after system.img. never gets past i've tried to do multiple attempts(5-6) per rom but no luck yet. never gets past "downloading... do not turn off) phase.
thanks alot for the assistance guys!
CSC more or less tells you the country .
Overseas first question then is it actually I9300 look under the battery .

Model Number under battery says GT-I9300 same thing that's prompted during kies for emergency recovery.. which downloads but ends up not recognizing it. Odin flash on the other hand recongizes it when i plug it but keeps failing.
LL3 is from Pakistan http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9300&pcode=PAK#firmware
Try downloading any unbranded firmware cause it's pretty much it's the same thing. You can always change the csc after you flash your phone.
or Download the right firmware on the country on which you are right now.
Then follow the youtube guide here on how to properly flash it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610. You can just skip the unrooting part i guess.
EDIT:
Annandale is in UK right? On the 2nd link that i gave you the first firmware there is from UK so i think you can flash that one.

Yea i though it was from pain (LL3 rom listed on another thread) but i then foudn the PAK version so that's the one i downloaded but the 4.1.2 version. I downloaded 4.1.1 and 4.0 (ics) version so i'll give those a try too.
Phone specs as they appear on the back are :
Model: GT-I9300
FCC ID: A3LGTI9300A
SSN: -I9300GSMH
S/N: RF1C63KJ4RL
Okay goodluck on flashing your S3 I'm gonna sleep now lol. 12:11am here.
Gnite, gonna keep messing with this and see what happens.
Edit: Annandale. Virginia USA sry for the confusion.
Just tried the ICS and the 4.1.1 rom still fails at systems.img ... any ideas what else it could be?

the pit files that was posted there was for the 64gb one if you are using the 16gb one so I've uploaded the pit files for all SIII storage models.
just take note of this:
GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit = Galaxy S3 of 16 Gb
GT-I9300_mx_20120322.pit = Galaxy S3 of 32 Gb
GT-I9300_mx_20120329.pit = Galaxy S3 of 64 Gb
And make sure to follow the the instructions there. Likewise credits goes to the posters there and not me lol.

Thanks for the follow up and thorough info! i'll make a note of that when i do this later.
I installed the pit file and it installs properly, says Reset then i put the phone back into download mode and try to upload the roms (PAK) 4.1.2 and 4.1.1 as well as the latest 4.0.4 and all fails. this time it fails after NAND Write.. so idk... >< i'm gonna try and download an older version of ICS (probably end up downloading all 5 ICS roms on samsung site. I'm looking for a stock kernel as well to follow what the additional instructions of the guy on the link posted but i can't seem to get my hand on a kernel, anyone know a link to a stock gt-i9300 kernel?
in the meantime i'll start downloading the ics roms.

I had a similar problem, my phone just froze in the middle of a phone call, had to pull out battery, and when i tried to turn it on, it wouldn't pass the second "SAMSUNG" logo, just stayed there forever, with the blue light (Official JB 4.1.2 - not rooted)... Anyway, after 3 days of trying, downloaded bunch of firmwares, but all of them gave me the infamous "Complete(Write) operation failed". This is how I MANAGED to revive my i9300 16Gb Int:
1.Open ODIN, load ONLY the pit file corresponding to your phone (In my case i9300 16Gb Int'l - GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit), check "Repartition" and "F.Reset Time" and hit "Start".
- If this step goes OK (All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0))
2. Click on the "Reset" button in Odin (or close and re-open it), in PDA select "recovery-cwm-touch-6.0.1.2-i9300.tar", make sure only "F.Reset Time" and "Auto Reboot" are checked, and flash it. If everything goes OK, you should now have CWM instead of Stock recovery.
3. Take any microSD card, any size, and put THIS file on the root of the microSD using a card reader or whatever you prefer - but be careful, copy the zip as it is - do not unzip it.
4. Insert the memory card in the phone, enter recovery*, and select "Install zip from External Storage" and choose the file you put on the root of the card (by the way, it's a 4.0.4 downgrade bootloader), it should flash in a second, the phone will restart, and that's it!
5. Download and flash 4.0.4 Stock FW using Odin (i used "I9300XXBLH1_OXEBLF1.zip"), everything should go OK, and the phone will be bootable again.
*(my phone didn't wanted to enter recovery the old fashioned way using 3-button combo, but i managed to enter recovery from charging mode, by connecting the charger on a switched off phone, and as soon it starts charging press Vol Up + Home + Power, and when the FIRST Logo (Galaxy S III GT-I9300) appears, let go of the power button, keep pressing the Vol Up + Home, and it enters recovery).
